Fall ’12/Winter ’13 News, Information and Education from the Staff of Brinton Lake Dermatology Introducing our XTRAC and Vbeam Very A-Peeling! For more than twenty years, Brinton Lake Dermatology has been steadfast in its commitment to offer our patients the latest in dermatological medicine and beautification treatments while adhering to strict standards of safety. With these considerations in mind, we are excited to announce the addition of two, new laser procedures to our treatment options. The XTRAC Laser Patients with mild to chronic psoriasis know all too well the negative impact this disease can have on their self-image and overall quality of life. Psoriasis patients suffer from itchy and splotchy skin, with inflamed redness and the telltale silvery-white “scales” manifested by this disease. Topical creams, in some instances, can be messy, time-consuming and may even prove ineffective. And, while full-body ultraviolet light treatment can provide relief, patients face the negative consequences of putting other healthy skin at risk. Now there is an alternative to consider: The XTRAC Laser. This breakthrough technology was featured last year on the popular TV show, “The Doctors” and is endorsed by the National Psoriasis Foundation. It is also recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology. Patients will also be happy to hear that most major insurance companies cover the treatment. How Does XTRAC Work? XTRAC produces a highly effective, safe and painless therapy by delivering a targeted, super-narrow UVB band to affected psoriasis areas, resulting in effective and rapid improvement without the continued on page 2 Finally – a professional eye and lip treatment that safely targets sensitive facial areas Are you one of those individuals who suffers from dark circles under your eyes, even after you think you have caught up on your beauty sleep? Are you looking for a way to increase firmness in the sensitive skin around your eyes and lips? If either one of these scenarios applies to you, we have an exciting new treatment for you. Introducing the Glytone by Enerpeel® EL (Eyes/Lips) System Developed in Italy and now offered here at Brinton Lake Dermatology, the Enerpeel ®EL peel has been especially designed to target sensitive areas under the eyes (periocular), and around the lips (peri-oral). The active ingredients of this gel-based skin remodeling solution include 15% lactic acid and 3.75% trichloroacetic acid. These ingredients are delivered in a special carrier solution that improves absorption by penetrating deep under the skin surface where they can create the most effective results. “We are very excited to be able to offer such a dynamic peel like this that can safely target the eye and lip areas,” says Charlotte Gallagher, one of Brinton Lake Dermatology’s medical aestheticians. continued on page 5 XTRAC and Vbeam lasers, continued from front cover XTRAC is endorsed by the National Psoriasis Foundation and recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology. worry of harmful side effects. A carefully focused beam of laser light is delivered through a sophisticated, liquid guide delivery system, concentrating light on active psoriatic skin plaques without damaging healthy tissue. Treatments are suggested usually 2-3 times a week, with dramatic clearing results normally seen after 6-10 treatments. Clearing can last 4-6 months up to a year. Dr. Robin Scheiner is enthusiastic about the potential that this new laser treatment has for patients who have struggled with this stubborn skin condition. “XTRAC provides real hope for our mildto-moderate psoriasis sufferers, and can even be used on hard-to-treat areas like elbows and knees,” she comments. PSORIASIS PRE-TREATMENT AFTER XTRAC TREATMENTS VITILIGO PRE-TREATMENT AFTER 20 XTRAC TREATMENTS XTRAC for Vitiligo Treatment XTRAC laser treatments are also recommended for patients with vitiligo, an unusual skin disorder that causes white spots or patches. The condition occurs when pigment cells, the ones that normally produce melanin (which give skin its normal color), get destroyed. The result is a loss of skin color in the affected areas. Vitiligo is most commonly seen in exposed areas like the hands, face and upper chest. It can also occur at the site of injuries from cuts and burns, at the areas surrounding body openings like eyes and genitalia, and in body “fold” areas such as armpits. “Clinical studies have shown that the XTRAC laser is most successful when treating vitiligo on the face and neck,” notes Dr. Lisa Hostetler. The Vbeam Perfecta Laser The second new laser treatment being offered by Brinton Lake Dermatology is the Vbeam Perfecta Laser. This versatile new technology is considered the ‘gold standard’ for the treatment of a wide variety of vascular lesions including facial and leg spider veins, rosacea, port wine stains, hemangiomas and other unsightly red discolorations. The Vbeam laser can also improve the look and feel of scars and stretch marks. “The Vbeam laser represents a major leap in next-generation technology, “ says Dr. Kari Boucher. “This laser is highly effective yet, at the same time, is gentle enough to be used on young children and even infants.” Vbeam has also proven effective in treating a benign skin condition called “poikiloderma of civatte,” a medical term used to describe a mottled skin appearance on the side of the neck. This condition is chiefly attributed to sun exposure. How Does the Vbeam Work? The Vbeam laser produces a highly targeted burst of light that destroys unsightly blood vessels without damaging healthy tissue. A hand piece is guided over the affected area, with laser light applied at an intensity that is deemed appropriate for the particular skin condition being treated. continued on page 4 2 Other Great Laser/Light Skin Rejuvenation Possibilities Triniti™ – Matrix IR™ – Sublative RF™ – elos™ – Fraxel™ – Sublime™ and MORE Brinton Lake Dermatology offers many other laser/light skin rejuvenation treatments to remove unwanted hair, treat acne flare-ups, eliminate unsightly leg veins, or provide skin tightening/wrinkle reduction. Treat Someone to the Gift of Beauty Each laser treatment offers specific advantages that are designed to treat certain skin conditions or medical concerns. Your doctor, physician assistant or medical aesthetician here at Brinton Lake Dermatology will be able to recommend the best laser/light option for you. All You Need to Add is Good Cheer A Brinton Lake Dermatology gift certificate provides the perfect way to say “Happy Holidays,” “Thanks so much,” or simply “Thinking of you.” Tell someone you care by giving a gift that will keep on giving, in the form of healthy, luminous skin. XTRAC and Vbeam lasers, continued from page 2 Our gift certificates are available in any denomination and can be used for any of Brinton Lake Dermatology’s broad range of cosmetic procedures or skin care products. While most patients require 1-3 treatments, patients with port wine stains or hemangiomas may need additional sessions. Red veins usually respond better than blue veins. Of course, specific treatment details will depend on your skin type, plaque thickness and the location of the vascular lesion. Treat your friends or loved ones to a soothing facial, a refreshing chemical peel, a wrinkle-reducing eye/lip peel or their favorite PhytoCeuticals or Hyalogy skin care product— the list goes on and on. Our experienced aestheticians can help recommend a product or procedure to meet individual skin rejuvenation goals. Post Treatment Care Post treatment, some patients may experience mild redness that lasts for a few days or even weeks, while others may find they have only slight redness for a few hours. Patients can put makeup on directly after the procedure but should avoid direct sunlight. Cool compresses are also helpful to alleviate any slightly sensitive or warm areas. “Overall, Vbeam is a very expeditious procedure since the treatment doesn’t generally take long and there is little downtime needed for healing,” says Dr. Scheiner. And here is another great idea: Why not casually leave this issue of Skin Savvy around the house (turned over to this panel of course!). Eye and lip peel, continued from front cover The treatment’s patented technology makes the peel seem almost inactive when applied to the skin, limiting irritation and reddening of these areas. The final result is an overall BEFORE refreshing, light exfoliation that provides deeper remodeling. It is the perfect peel for mild and moderate photo-aging of the eyes and lips. AFTER Enerpeel® EL Results Can Include: • Significant increase in skin firmness around eyes and lips • Decrease in fine lines, wrinkles and coarse crow’s feet • Decrease in moderate hyperpigmentation • Decrease in dark circles • Accentuated lip border To Our Patients: Purchase a package of four Enerpeel ® EL peels and receive a FREE soothing eye contour cream for use after your peel! Another Option: Macrodermabrasion Patients looking to treat fine lines and wrinkles, sun damaged skin, acne and scarring, uneven skin tone and stretch marks, might also consider another popular non-chemical Brinton Lake Dermatology treatment called macrodermabasion. This soothing and painless process utilizes environmentally safe salt crystals to remove the top layer of skin cells. You can polish away signs of premature aging, remove dead skin cells and promote an overall, brighter skin surface. The procedure is also great for the décolletage (upper chest area). BEFORE AFTER Chemical Peels for the Rest of Your Face The concept of applying solutions to the face to restore and refresh the skin has been around since the days of Cleopatra. Today, advancements in dermatological products can provide precise results for a wide range of skin care issues or concerns. “We offer several skin exfoliation treatments, including our Brilliance and Prestige Peels, which target pigment issues, reduce wrinkling and improve skin texture,” notes Lisa Bucci, Brinton Lake Dermatology’s other medical aesthetician. These chemical peels rejuvenate the skin by stimulating cell turnover, creating firmer, smoother and more radiant skin. Also known as “derma peeling,” the chemical peel technique is a minimally invasive procedure that can improve the appearance of skin that is damaged due to sun exposure, acne or simply from the natural aging process. Almost anyone can benefit from chemical peels if they’re looking to soften fine lines, lighten and brighten the skin and look their best. Call us today to schedule an appointment with one of our medical aestheticians. Brinton Lake Dermatology (formerly Associates in Medical and Cosmetic Dermatology) will soon be celebrating a One-Year Anniversary in our new location! Many of you have already visited us here for medical and cosmetic dermatological procedures and treatments. A large group of you joined us at our Open House last spring where a few lucky winners won skin care treatments and products. It was a great event and a chance for our loyal patients and friends to experience our beautiful new offices first hand. Our facility here at Crozer Medical Plaza at Brinton Lake features separate cosmetic and dermatological suites for your convenience as well as a Mohs Surgical Suite. The Mohs procedure offers the highest cure rate for basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, even if the cancer has already been treated by another method. Our surgical suite is under the direction of Dr. Gregory B. Persichetti, a fellowship-trained skin cancer surgeon and reconstructive specialist as well as boardcertified dermatologist. Brinton Lake Dermatology is co-resident with many other Crozer Keystone physicians and specialists. And, we’re surrounded by great shopping (like the Shoppes at Brinton Lake) and restaurants. If you have not yet visited our new facility, we hope to see you soon so we can show off our new “digs”! Please Welcome Theresa Ridgway Brinton Lake Dermatology’s Newest Physician Assistant Brinton Lake Dermatology is pleased to announce the recent addition of Theresa G. Ridgway, MPAS, PAC, to our dermatologic medical team. A native of Delaware County, Theresa felt the desire to help others from an early age. As a sixteen-year-old high school student, she provided critical medical services by becoming an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). The following year, she volunteered locally as a fire fighter. Ultimately, she received degrees from St. Joseph’s University and Drexel University’s Hahnemann Physician Assistant Program. 3 Theresa says she loves helping make the kind of diagnoses that ultimately can alleviate troublesome skin problems. “We work as a team to put pieces of a puzzle together to find out what is going on with our patients,” she says. “I especially like helping teens with acne – we have all had skin issues and I’m so happy when I can make my patients smile.” When not solving dermatological puzzles, Theresa enjoys a number of hobbies including cycling, painting, reading and “trying to become a good cook.” We heartily welcome Theresa and wish her much success with Brinton Lake Dermatology – and in her kitchen!
