ROAD RUMBLINGS…
SEPTEMBER 2010
I S S UE No . 9
PUBLISHED: WHENEVER I CAN IT DO BUT MONTHLY MOST OF THE TIME…
August is speeding to an end and September is knocking on
the door, as I put the finishing touches on this issue of the
GAZZETTE, here at GAZZETTE HQ in beautiful College Grove Tn. To
say it‟s been a HOTTTT one here in Middle Tennessee is an
understatement. It‟s been HOT in most every part of the USA this
summer. To all of you (us) who still went out and attended shows and
cruise nites, we salute you. You are the diehards of our sport /
hobby.
Gearheads get ready!!!! September is absolutely SLAMMIN‟
with shows and events and October is JAMMED full of fun things to
do. Make sure you check out the EVENT Section and the Cruise Nites
also. A lot of Cruise nites end after September or the 1st weekend in
October. What are you waiting for…Get up, Get out and floor it to
your favorite event this month!!
Don‟t forget to check out the FOR SALE / SWAP section
for some new listings of stuff you just can‟t live without.
Speaking of Cruise Nites, one of our favorites that happens
once a month, is the BELLEVUE CRUISE-IN. The next one happens on
September 4th. Check it out!! Don‟t forget to see Tom Akers while you
are there, if you want to have your ride selected for the upcoming
KRIS KRINGLE Invitational Car Show on Nov 6 & 7.
August saw the NSRA Nationals PLUS take place in Lou-ville
Ky. Opinions were all over the board, depending on who you talked to
about the addition of the “LATE MODEL” vehicles to the event,
before the event. From my viewpoint I think it came off GREAT!!!
The only little teeny tiny irritant to me was the VW THINGS that
were there. Yes they met the rules and they are someone‟s hot rod
and I respect that. Those truly were a THING to me…HA Seriously
though, I think NSRA did the right thing and it was a smooth event.
Even the weather cooperated.
Speaking of the NSRA Nat‟s, check out the GARAGE SCENE
section of this issue for some photo‟s and a link to many more!! Who
knows…you may be there!!
An observation at the Nat‟s had some of us GEARHEADS
shaking our heads. There was our buddy and Willys owner Richard
“ Beaver” Hellis POLISHING the Willys!!!! For those of you who don‟t
understand, ya gotta know that we are used to seeing Beaver using
409 to clean the car while it was in primer for a couple of years. Now
that it has the slick paint job on it, he looks like a 3M or MOTHERS
Maybe he was rubbing that hard on the paint because NSRA
StreetScene Magazine shot pictures of the car for a future issue??
Rest assured we could not find a 409 bottle anywhere!! Lookin‟ Good
buddy!!
Did you hear about the recent show down in Ardmore AL??
They had over 1100 entries this year. +300 from 2009. If you didn‟t
make this year‟s show, make plans now for the 2011 version. I am sure
Rodney & the Alabama Gang has got it going on right now getting
everything in place for an even bigger show!!
Speaking of the Ardmore show, congrats go out to John
Creveling and his “VERY COOL” 55‟ Chevy “pick em up” truck for
picking up a TOP 5 Award!! Way to go John!!!!!
We want to give a Shout Out to Curt & Curtis Gibbs from
Franklin Tn. They recently participated in the Hemmings Challenge up
in Bowling Green Ky. This is a Rallye style event with each day
bringing a different drive and requirements. Day 1 & Day 2 saw TEAM
GIBBS in Curt‟s „32 Ford Roadster kicking butt in the NOVICE Class.
They had the best time and damn near were perfect, within seconds
of the allowed time. Day 3 was looking good but mechanical failure
brought an end to their week early. They did win $1000 for winning
the first 2 days!! Way to go guys!!
The guys at HOT RODS & THREADS Full Service Hot Rod
Shop asked us to let all of you know, they will be hosting an OPEN
HOUSE – 5th BIRTHDAY BASH on Oct 23rd. More info to come, and
keep an eye out for the flyers. Looks like it will be lots of fun at one
of the COOLEST Hot Rod Shops in the Mid-South.
On a personal note for me, I don‟t ask anything of all of you
GEARHEADS, for me, but I am now. I am going to ask you to keep my
Mom in your thoughts and prayers. We recently found out she has
lung cancer. She has a tough fight ahead of her, but with your help,
she will kick the crap out of the “BIG C”. Thanks…..
Now go out there and FLOOR IT!!!! and have some fun with
your ride!!!
And remember to tell em’ ya saw it in the GEARHEAD
GAZZETTE!!!
Jimmy B.
If you would like to receive the GAZZETTE direct instead of 2nd hand, all you need
to do is send me an email at gearheadgazzette@gmail.com. You can always check
out the current issue of the GAZZETTE on line at www.gearheadgazzette.com
wax rep the way he polishes the car.
“Remember…we’re here for a good time…not a long time…Enjoy the Ride”.

SATURDAY MORNING CRUISE IN’s:
To all classic car fans……
I have been repeatedly asked when are we going to start up the Franklin area Cars & Coffee for 2010? My suggestion is to
nd
th
come out for coffee twice a month, the 2 Saturday & 4 Saturday of each month starting in March. That way if you can’t make it one
Saturday you don’t have to wait an entire month before there is another one. To that end I have formulated the following calendar for
2010.
I thought it would be advisable to get the schedule out so people could mark their calendars and make plans to attend.
Please forward the schedule to other Classic Car Fans that are not on the list.

FOR SALE: 1969 Plymouth Valiant. Car reads 32,700 miles, probably 132,700. Runs solid, don't know if the 318 was ever
rebuilt or if the carb was, but it doesn't burn any oil or smoke at all. All original clean interior, only one rip in the center armrest
and some on the dash. The paint is about 80% original with very little rust at all. Needs some finishing on the body to look
complete. Has complete trim on the body. I have quite a few goodies from 1969 including the original broadcast sheet, original
window sticker, original dealer invoice, airtemp brochure, Goodyear brochure and warranty booklet with the original owners’
info. The only original memorabilia missing is the owner’s manual, all else is there. The a/c does work and was converted to
134r by the guy I bought it from since he does a/c work. Very straight and clean mostly original car that just needs some
finishing. Does run and drive fine around town. It is the 318 with a carter two barrel and more than likely is numbers matching. I
put a fuel pump and filter on the car, and replaced a busted trans cooler line. I have done some tinkering on the car, I just don't
have the time or the money to invest in fixing this cruiser up like she deserves. She needs a good home. I'm asking $1,200 or
best offer.
For any info or to talk to Andy, call him at 256-975-9564. You can email him at andyola86@yahoo.com . (9/10)
“GARAGE & SHOP SCENE”
SEND THE PICTURES AND INFO ON YOUR RIDE OR YOUR FRIENDS RIDE AND WE’LL SHOW IT OFF RIGHT HERE!!
SEND US YOUR SHOW INFO AND PICTURES AND WE’LL SHARE THEM WITH ALL THE GEARHEADS!!
 Head over to www.gearheadgazzette.com and click on the GALLERY Tab. Then click on
2010 and check out the Pictures from the 2010 NSRA Nationals Plus in Lou-ville KY. Here’s
a few to get you going….
 Do I go to the NSRA Nationals or do I go play Pirate?? Looks like our good friend Terry
Tuckerman is now looking for an eye patch & a parrot for his shoulder. We missed ya in
Lou-ville TT!!!!!
 Only In California!!! Thanks to Brian Baker for sending these shots in to share. Most of us
rode these at a carnival or an amusement park that probably no longer exists!!! Never
fear… the ingenuity of a GEARHEAD comes out. Here’s the rest of the story…..It's easy for
a gear-head to be discouraged about the state of the world, especially in times of
Carpocalypse and Cash for Clunkers.
But occasionally a bright light of awesome renews the spirit.
Road-legal bumper cars do just that.
Yes, you read that right; these little beasties are street legal. They run on either
Kawasaki or Honda motorcycle engines and co-opt vintage bumper car bodies into
the most awesome form of mini-car we've seen in too long.
There are seven of these little monsters floating around California , and they're all
the creation of one man, Tom Wright , a builder in the outskirts of San Diego who
figured the leftovers of the Long Beach Pike amusement park needed a more
dignified end than the trash heap. They were originally powered by Harley motors but
they rattled like hell and Tom replaces them with Honda or Kawasaki 750's and a
couple have been measured as capable of 160 MPH , which is terrifyingly fast in
machines with such a short wheelbase.
 Here’s a couple of pictures from the NSRA Nationals South this year. They come to us from
Butch Pate. Butch is a freelance photo-journalist in the Middle Tennessee area. He
contributes regularly to OL Skool Rodz, and other magazines as well as being featured on
HOT ROD HOTLINE (www.hotrodhotline.com). Butch is going to send us some of his stuff
and some feature articles from time to time that we will include for you to check out in the
GAZZETTE. Thanks Butch and WELCOME!!!
 Congrats goes out to Paul Shauck of HOT RODS & THREADS FULL SERVICE HOT ROD SHOP.
His “too cool” 1933 FORD “SMOKIN BONES” was featured recently on SPIKE TV’s
POWERBLOCK TV show. The always lovely Courtney Hansen highlighted the features of this
BAD AZZ ride. Here’s a few shots from the day in the studio.
