Ren had been a member of MTC since the 1990s, and Kevin joined when he and Ren were married. They were a regular sight at Beach Runs and other MTC sanctioned events with a baby jogger as soon as Cooper came along. Two years later, that became a double baby jogger when Tucker came on the scene. Now ages 8 and 6, the boys are both running the beach runs and doing 5k races on their own. Tucker ran the one mile kids run last week in 9:20. Cooper is running 5ks in about 40 minutes, Tucker 45 minutes. Kevin is rebuilding himself as a runner following knee surgery for a torn meniscus. Kevin is a mechanical engineer with an aerospace company. He is working to rebuild his strength and speed for RAGNAR in February 2015. RAGNAR is an overnight relay event involving teams of twelve runners. Kevin and Ren are both triathletes and members of the Sarasota Storm Triathlon Club. Kevin sticks to sprint and olympic distance events, but Ren does those distances and has also completed Ironman Florida in 14 hours and 34 minutes. The distances for Ironman Florida are, swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, and run 26.2 miles. In the sprint distance, Ren recently finished 4th in AG in 1 hour and 26 minutes. Ren is membership coordinator for the Sarasota Storm Triathlon Club. Her bucket list includes a desire to run the New York City Marathon. Kevin is content to keep the boys entertained while Ren does those long distance events. Watch for Cooper and Tucker to keep showing up at races as they grow in their “MTC Running Family”! www.manasotatrackclub.org 1 PLEASE VISIT OUR WE B SITE AT: manasotatrackclub.org Webmasters: Don Marshall – sarasotadon@msn.com • Patti Connors – patticonnors@outlook.com Fit to Run 8123 Cooper Creek Blvd. University Park 358-5100 fit2run.com New Balance Sarasota 1872 Stickney Point Rd. Yeah, you read that correctly … JULY 2! Wow, I cannot believe there are only two more summer beach runs left! Where did the time go? Mother Nature cooperated for the most part, with only one run having been cancelled (fingers crossed for the last two!). And of course, it had to be the night of our first new event of the summer – the relay race. Fear not, it’s been rescheduled for August 5, so get your teams ready! This has been a really good summer. It’s been a blast watching the kids line up for the one mile race … they can barely contain their excitement as they wait for the horn to sound. And then to watch them cross the finish with smiles beaming – I love it! We’ve also had a few apres-run hobnobs, most recently we had an ice cream social. It’s hot out there – the ice cream and ice pops definitely hit the spot! Earlier in the summer, the BBR Pride night and hot dog cook out had a huge turn out. So many people showed up in their favorite BBR shirts. We had drawings for MTC visors, Gecko’s gift cards and “I Will Run 4 Beer” race entries. Island of Venice MANASOTA TRACK CLUB Siesta Key If you did not sign up in time, there may be a couple of other ways for you to get in. Fleet Feet Sports on Osprey Ave. has a No Boundaries training program for BBR and they may have some entries available. Also, Fit2Run may have some entries up for grabs at the grand opening event for their new Downtown Sarasota store. Best bet is to check their facebook pages for info. Still looking for MTC gear? MTC logo shirts are in stock at Fleet Feet Sports! Yay! Lots of styles for men and women. MTC visors are available at the beach runs, stop by the keg zone to get yours. $15 each or 2 for $25. See ya at the beach! I get a special joy from the fact that I'm doing something for myself that I know is helping me become a stronger, more fit, 75+ year old. In 2011, I embarked on an extended road trip in my RV that took me to the west coast and points in between and I couldn't keep up my workout program. I didn't pick it up again until last year. I knew that I had lost some muscle mass and was curious to see how soon I could get it back... I was amazed! With every session I'm getting stronger. My stronger body makes my life easier and more enjoyable. My trainer is an excellent coach and, I think accepts the fact that I like to talk while I'm working out, but that's just how I do it. It’s not mandatory to be a motor mouth. I'll ask her things like, “Did you add weight? How much? How much time did I do last time? How much time have I done so far? Is that all? You’re kidding... I don't think I can do anymore!” She'll say, “Yes you can, try one more.” I try, I do one more and it is not easy, but quite often I find enough strength to do another one after that. That's what it’s all about. That's the genius of this program. I exhaust my muscle groups with a high weight for my ability and a low number of slow repetitions... once a week. I don't have to do three sets of ten, two to three times a week at the gym. This is a medically based, scientifically proven training program performed on unique specialized equipment with extremely knowledgeable coaches in a semi-private non-gym environment. I bike, swim, stand up paddle-board, dance, yoga, meditate, take naps and more. I live with a great sense of gratitude of the blessing God has given me. I don't take anything for granted, including my muscles. 20 Minutes Once a Week! I first came to 20 Minutes to Fitness in 2008 and it was nothing I had ever experienced in my life. I had been around gyms for many years and I was quite aware of all sorts of workout philosophies, but never this one. In and out in about twenty minutes? This I had to see. I saw it and I'm still here. Since I added “20 Minutes to Fitness” to my life, I'm doing just fine, thank you!!!!! No two ways about it. So what can you do to make your sweat-soaked runs and post-runs more enjoyable???? Run in a fun new slogan shirt!!! A new company by the name of RUNtelligence has come out with a number of extremely soft, lightweight and comfortable shirts in a variety of fun colors. Here is a little bit about the company and their shirts: Who are the company founders? RUNtelligence is the brain-child of Jason and Larry Herman, couch-potatoes-turnedrunners who think athletic clothing should make a statement and be FUN! Both Jason and Larry grew up overweight and sedentary. Neither of them was involved in any athletic endeavors, and in fact, both slowly ballooned to over 300 lbs. Both eventually decided that enough was enough and decided to get healthy and eat right and exercise. The Herman Brothers began a quest that would bring them to a point where they each lost 110 pounds and found the sport of running. Since 2003 both brothers have competed in many, many races and running events from 5Ks to ultra-marathons. They have participated in race management and leadership roles and now also run their own running shirt business – RUNtelligence. What are the products? For women, they have short-sleeve performance t-shirts, long sleeve performance shirts, and tanks in a variety of slogans, colors and sizes XS-XL. For men, they have short sleeve and long sleeve performance shirts in sizes S-XXL, also in a variety of colors and slogans. The shirts retail for $20.00. The shirts are: If you have a supercool idea for a shirt, would they consider producing it? Yes, they will! Just send them your idea. They will check it out and let you know! Contact Larry Herman at larry@runtelligence.com. Which shirts can you find locally? Fleet Feet Sports Sarasota has 3 slogans for women in 3 colors and 2 for men in 2 colors. They are the only store in Florida carrying these shirts and Florida is one of just 3 states so far that carries the shirts. But look for that to change quickly! Kara Goucher recently posted a photo of herself in one of the banana shirts and got over 17,000 likes on her Facebook page!!!! These shirts are now in demand!!! Also available online at runtelligence.com Nancy is a local runner/ MTC member who LOVES performance apparel with a flare. She is the Apparel Buyer for Fleet Feet Sports Sarasota in Southside Village. She has expanded the apparel offerings at FFSS to now include 16 different women’s and men’s brands ranging from Brooks, Nike, Adidas, and Saucony to Lole, lucy, SkirtSports and UnderArmour - and everthing in between for performance running, active lifestyle, yoga, and walking. • AquaFX wicking and Freshcare anti-microbial properties NEXT MTC BOARD MEETING & NEWSLETTER ASSEMBLY • Double-needle hem sleeves and bottom Wednesday, September 3, 2014 • 100% polyester Next MTC Board meeting will be held at the Fire Station, located one block east of US 41 on Waldemere Street (east of Sarasota Memorial Hospital). MANASOTA TRACK CLUB Rate the races By Terry Deshaies Hey everybody’s gotta have a goal ☺ I rate the races based on 4 criteria: organization, the course, awards and post race party. Anyone who would like to comment about a race can email me directly at deshaitr@hotmail.com. Well the summer beach runs continue to be the dominating races in the area…and just about the only ones. The conditions have actually been the best I can recall for the 4 of the 5 races we’ve done so far. We’ve been really lucky with the late afternoon clouds covering up the sun and only one rain out!! The wind, for a change, has been our friend. Usually on the beach it’s a steady 20 mph wind in one direction or the other or both ☺ but this year there’s been just enough to help cool you down!!! Did I say cool you down? The toughest conditions we’ve faced so far were with the 4 milers…It was great going up the beach into the wind, but during the 2 miles back I’ve never seen so many runners bailing left and left at the 2 mile mark and only those of us die hards, not smart enough to stop, completed the whole 4 miles!! ☺ The beer at the finish is about the only thing that keeps me going on those long trudges back up the beach!! I would like to take this opportunity to talk about the so called “Trendy Races”….they are Bunk!! That is all I have to say!! The quick 1,2,3 on upcoming races: I Will Run for Beer: New race this year, sounds like one I might enjoy ☺ Canes Cross Country 5k at GT Bray Park, very organized, fun cross country course!! Awards go 6 deep, great post race party, coming out and beating the teenagers---priceless!! Hooters to Hooters 5k&10k in Clearwater, one of the most fun races I do all year. Challenging 10k course, especially when you signed up for the 5k!! A great post-race party, I bet this year people will pay more attention to the pre-race course layout ☺ Every Saturday Night at the White Buffalo I’m teaching the line dancing lessons from 5 till 7pm, another cheap plug, can I get a Yee-Haw!! ☺ See you at the races ☺ Never Stop. take yourself to new heights with targeted sports training featuring Blaine Bott, CPT, TRX, FMS, and former Top Performance Specialist with IMG Academies. • • • • • No contracts Pay as you go personalized pricing Small, boutique-style classes Seasonal packages available Highest qualified & credentialed trainers There’s always another goal to reach.
