Kedron Aged Care Newsletter – Edition 13, September 2016 Keeping Up With Kedron A Message from Sarah: Respect It is unfortunate that society views a negative stereotype of people 85 or older. This negativity is ingrained in our attitudes and values and often unquestioned on a personal level or within systems and services. You may have had the experience of not being listened to, or taken seriously because of your age. An underhand form of ageism is when your human rights are overstepped because others assume that older people: CONTENTS Director of Nursing Report: A message from Sarah 1-2 Care Manager Report: A message from Leanne 3-4 • Don’t know what is best; • Are unable to look after themselves; Leisure and Lifestyle News: A message from Fiona 5-6 • Due to frailty they need to be protected; Benefits of Pet Therapy • Increased age makes them make poor decisions; 7-10 A little about me – Pasquale 16-17 We all understand the realities of ageing and the needs of the people who live here at Kedron, even though we need physical and psychological care and support at all levels of ageing, it should not be assumed that we can’t decide who we should be a companion and how we wish to spend our time. It is important to resist over protective attitudes because they wear away basic human rights including our right to privacy and dignity. Sometimes nurses and carers believe that they have a duty of care to protect the older person and this can conflict with our decisions. One of the CPSM Care core values is dignity. A way we can all support dignity is to respect an older person’s right to make their own decisions, even if seen as risky. The ‘dignity of risk’ is used to describe an individual’s right to choose to take some risks in engaging in life experiences. It includes the idea of making an informed choice. 1|P a g e Planner 18 Kedron Aged Care Newsletter – Edition 13, September 2016 FUN FACTS On September 1, 1939, World War II began in Europe because the German troops invaded Poland. The zodiac signs for September are Virgo (August 23 - September 22) and Libra (September 23 - October 22) Dignity is about the daily interactions we encounter with others, the way they treat us, our relationships with people and the strength within these relationships. Negative attitudes about ageing are not a fact of life or part and parcel of being old. At Kedron Aged Care we are proud to promote that we have Respect for Age. Sarah Clery – Director of Nursing September is often associated with fire because it was the month of the Roman god Vulcan. Vulcan was the Roman god of fire and the forge. The Anglo-Saxons also called this month Gerst Monath meaning barley month. This is because they would harvest their barley crops during this month. 2|P a g e Kedron Aged Care Newsletter – Edition 13, September 2016 A Message from Leanne: BIG SMILES A Smile Goes a Long Way Moving into residential aged care can be a huge transition process for some people. From potentially going from living alone in two bedroom unit, having visitors for only an hour a day suddenly to a twenty one bedroomed house with fifty people sharing the building at any given time can be very overwhelming. It can be, for some personalities, very easy to stay in their room and interact very little with anybody else, may it be for fear of rejection, unwillingness to accept residential care or physical barriers which instigate this reluctance. Social isolation is all too prevalent in the aging population resulting in negative health outcomes (both physical and mental) and the need for companionship and sense of community is essential for this age group. Being the new person in an aged care facility can often feel like being the new person in school, the social anxiety of entering a room of people whom all already know each other can be too much for some people and therefore they don’t engage in group interaction. This then becomes habit to stay in their room therefore the only interaction they receive is family, visitors and staff attending to their care needs. This can be incredibly lonely for people that just a few years ago were active members of society. The limited mobility of not attending the dining room for meals can impact upon their strength balance and coordination and the loneliness and limited engagement can result in depression and cognitive decline. Companionship is essential for everybody but particularly those living in aged care. 3|P a g e . It allows the person to feel they are cared for and form a connection with another person. This can be something as simple as a smile and hello down the corridor, a brief chat or inviting someone to sit with you during lunch. The gesture does not have to be huge to make a difference to a person’s day “a smile goes a long way”. Kedron Aged care encourages all residents to attend the dining room for meals and participate in the diverse activities program. If this isn’t for you perhaps you could sit outside in the sun, use the facility phone to chat to old friends or speak with Fiona about having a volunteer come in and visit. Don’t feel lost in the crowd. Nobody should feel lonely in a house of 50 people! Leanne Rose – Care Manager 4|P a g e Kedron Aged Care Newsletter – Edition 13, September 2016 Leisure and Lifestyle News A Message from Fiona: We had only two birthday’s in August, not like the last months celebrations. We had a wonderful bus trip to King George Square, we went into the Brisbane Museum located on the third floor of the Town Hall. We enjoyed performances by our wonderful Nora Lawrie, and Nathaniel Ford. August was also the month of EKKA, and just because we can’t go to the EKKA doesn’t mean we don’t get to enjoy it. We had games, show bags, prizes and EKKA food. It was a fun day for everyone, family included. As most of you may have heard our volunteer Carol had a car accident but thankfully has made a full recovery. We cannot thank the volunteers enough for the time they give to us. On that note we have a new volunteer, Susanna. Susanna comes sporadically throughout the week. Please make her feel welcome when you see her and say hello. We had a great bus trip out fishing. Roland, Andrew and David all enjoyed throwing a line out…..sadly no fish were caught (muffled giggle). September we have a plethora of activities booked and bus trips to enjoy. We will be going to Broncos this week for a meal and a show. A museum at the end of the month, to see the history of Australia and what life was like for those settlers. We will also get to enjoy Lachlan Barry 5|P a g e SEPTEMBER INTERNATIONAL DAYS 05th September International Day of Charity In recognition of the role of charity in alleviating humanitarian crises and human suffering within and among nations, as well as of the efforts of charitable organizations and individuals, including the work of Mother Teresa, the General Assembly of the United Nations in its resolution A/RES/67/105PDF document designated the 5th of September, the anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa, as the International Day of Charity. 08th September International Literacy Day This year marks the 50th anniversary of International Literacy Day and UNESCO is celebrating it under the banner “Reading the Past, Writing the Future”. Kedron Aged Care Newsletter – Edition 13, September 2016 DOG THERAPY perform for us again with is melodious voice renditions of famous singers long passed. Everyone is more than welcome to attend, so please come along. There is one other thing I would like to ask family and friends. We always love and encourage family involvement in all activities. It provides a nurturing and enriching environment for everyone who lives here. However sometimes there may be an activity that may seem too loud, or too boring and slow for family/friends visiting. When this is the case I please ask that you take your loved one out into the beautiful courtyard or for maybe the comfort of their room would be more peaceful. All residents have different levels of comprehension, mobility and speed, due to whatever reason, therefore activities are catered to factor those into the program. Thank you for your patience during these times. Fiona Dardenne – Leisure and Lifestyle Coordinator 6|P a g e Kedron Aged Care Newsletter – Edition 13, September 2016 The Benefits of Pet Therapy MBERS: The Commissioner for Aged Care – P: 1800 500 294 When your loved one goes into residential care it can be a very daunting experience. One thing that always provides comfort during this time and thereafter is the unconditional love of a pet. Pets not only offer companionship and unconditional love, in fact, emerging research suggests they may have the ability to boost health and general wellbeing, especially in the elderly. Here are some reasons why Pet Therapy is imperative in aged care settings: 1. Decreased Risk of Depression Elderly people who spend a lot of time alone have a high risk of depression. Pet therapy provides your loved one with the opportunity to spend time with an animal he or she feels comfortable talking to or just sitting quietly with. This can help boost your loved one’s emotional wellbeing and prevent depression. SEPTEMBER HAPPENINGS: MEN’S GROUP 08th September BUS TRIPS 01st, 15th and 29th Sept 2. Lowered Blood Pressure INTERNATIONAL PEACE DAY 21st Sept Seniors with high blood pressure have an increased risk of developing heart problems, especially as they age. Being around a pet has been shown to lower blood pressure levels, which helps lower the risk of heart disease, heart attacks, and other coronary issues. In fact, seniors with heart problems who participate in pet therapy tend to have longer lifespans than those who do not. Increased Physical Activity 7|P a g e Kedron Aged Care Newsletter – Edition 13, September 2016 DOG THERAPY We have our new little therapy dog Akycha, owned by Fiona, L&L, who will make regular weekly visits. It’s important for your loved one to stay physically active to lower the risk of falls and to help reduce pain, stiffness, and other symptoms of conditions like arthritis. Pet therapy gives your loved one a chance to get some exercise by taking a dog on walks, which can help him or her maintain strength and flexibility. 4. Reduced Stress Seniors, especially those with dementia, can become stressed or frustrated when they have difficulty communicating with other people. If your loved one has dementia, having pets around offers a chance for him or her to bond and connect with others without having to rely on language. Using pet therapy as part of your loved one’s North Coast dementia care can help ease symptoms of the condition. 5. Enhanced Self-Esteem Some seniors experience a loss of confidence and lowered self-esteem when they have to depend on others. Having pets around to spend time with and take care of can help boost your loved one’s self-confidence and self-esteem and help him or her continue to feel independent. 8|P a g e Kedron Aged Care Newsletter – Edition 13, September 2016 LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE Kedron AgedCare 9|P a g e Kedron Aged Care Newsletter – Edition 13, September 2016 ACTIVITY FUN Balloon Tennis Leta enjoying a game 10 | P a g e Kedron Aged Care Newsletter – Edition 13, September 2016 OUR BUS TRIP PHOTOS King George Square Town Hall 11 | P a g e Kedron Aged Care Newsletter – Edition 13, September 2016 SPECIAL EVENTS EKKA DAY with showbags 12 | P a g e Kedron Aged Care Newsletter – Edition 13, September 2016 EKKA Day with Games Good bye Helga, a silent gentle nature for a beautiful soul 13 | P a g e Kedron Aged Care Newsletter – Edition 13, September 2016 Good bye Harry, always offering a smile and a wave to his fellow resident and staff.
