I keep a quote by Leo Buscaglia (1924-1998), author, lecturer and former USC professor close to my heart. His insight into happiness and relationships has always moved me. One of his quotes is printed and on my bulletin board in the hallway near my bathroom…it is worn, yellowed, but well read, considered and pondered over the years…and I recall…it was reading this quote that would ground me at the “bewitching hour” of the day with my little ones…the words sometimes got me through the remainder of the day, sometimes a trying and difficult day…with babies and toddlers…but the words and inspiration prepared me for the rest of the day…and the night- rejuvenating me in spirit…for the new day to come: “Bedtime is a special time, a time of transition. It is an opportunity for closure to one day and a preparation for the next. It is a small turning point in the natural rhythm that gives structure and meaning to life. Just as the seasons and their holidays and celebrations mark the great natural movements of the years, so bedtime marks the turning of the days. With care and patience and awareness of our children’s needs, each bedtime can be its own celebration of love and life. For in sleep, we are recreated and renewed.” I sometimes think of the end of a year in the same way as bedtime…a transition…so, I suppose that in a new year we truly do have the opportunity to be recreated and renewed… One resolution for the new year…re-print Leo Buscaglia’s quote. Place it on a bulletin board, frame it, place it somewhere to read and re-read during bath time, or on your child’s nightstand during story time, stick it on your bathroom mirror, medicine cabinet...somewhere…where you can have the gentle reminder…that we have transitions…a moment to breath, exhale…seconds, moments…hours, days, chapters, years…a lifetime of transitions. There were many times that I would read the quote…and a feeling of calm would take over…I knew that the new day would bring new goals…small, but magical turning points. Here are some resolutions that I have put on my list. Last year I started a tradition of having a New Year Goal Party and I will continue it again in 2010. In January—not necessarily on the 1st, but a date after all of the holiday decorations are down and all the chaos and hustle and bustle has subsided—invite friends over for a postholiday celebration and a chance to set out goals for the new year. Have friends write down their goals on two pieces of paper. They can take one home and leave the other for a time capsule (a sealed envelope, jar, old tin box, etc…to open the next year). It is a wonderful tradition for an opportunity to set your goals and resolutions and the perfect excuse to re-connect the next year-stay in touch with friends-which is probably a resolution for many a busy mom and dad! I had many friends that requested that we re-visit the goal party throughout the year…because only once a year was difficult to focus on goals. That makes sense…once a year is not enough…similar to needing bedtime to renew. It didn’t happen in 2009, but hopefully 2010 will provide more time for goals and resolutions. I guess that is my first resolution! On purpose…I recently overheard some children having a heated conversation…they were passionate in their banter…and one boy proclaimed…”but you did it on purpose”! I remembered yelling that out…with heart as a child. That statement stopped me…froze me in the moment…and I realized that even though what this boy was upset about, it had a negative basis…the “did it on purpose” was resounding. I should do things on purpose…and maybe with only that one resolution for 2010, any other remaining resolutions could happen with more ease. Realizing that a child’s needs are basic and natural…the purity of “on purpose” is priceless. So this new year…I will make breakfast for my children with purpose…not dragging, groggy or with any disdain, wishing that I could go back to bed, but for the Looking for help through your birth and/or postpartum days? Kiss their sweet little cheeks as they eat their scrambled eggs or cereal…children wake up to embrace the day…to live it with purpose…I wish that I could always see that… I will put a load of laundry in…pulling a piece of paper, stickers, gum…out of the pockets…appreciating the purpose of my children’s lives…because that is part of my purpose. I will understand the purpose of their lives…when they don’t brush their teeth, make their bed or do homework…because their purpose is to live…to be…and a mundane nuisance that I find important, may not part be of their purpose…but mine, to live in the moment…a natural rhthym, I should not torment my children with my burdens...I will live my life with “my purpose”…my purpose to guide…to provide the boundaries for my children to be loving and giving people. Take the chance to see everyday things through different eyes…sometimes this is enough to make a day magical. To practice this…to digest what another sees, feels, likes, dislikes…it can make all of the difference in the world. Have you seen the Lowes commercial? …the one with the little girl riding in the back seat…and the camera scans to the Lowes sign and then a telephone pole as a “T” image…and now Lowes…is LowesT?...there is another commercial-with a shopping bag…and the rope handles make with the knots…create a smiley face…just a different perspective…a different angle in the viewfinder of an eye…it was always there, but sometimes the gift of the way someone else sees life can be a true gift. So…this year…I will try to see the smiley face, a great bargin, someone’s sadness, a Kimberly W. The art of breastfeeding is a priceless gift to baby, mother, and our world. Most people know that “breast milk is best,” but exactly why is it the best? The following is a partial list of “gifts” that human milk offers: Health Benefits Breastfed babies are less likely to contract ear infections and other diseases like pneumonia and meningitis and less likely to become ill with gastrointestinal infections and diarrhea. Babies who are breastfed are at lower risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Another wonder of mother’s milk is its ability to offer protection from dayto-day exposure to contagious illnesses. Let’s say a mother comes down with flulike symptoms: body aches, nasal congestion, etc. By the time she is aware of any symptoms, her baby may also have been exposed to the illness. The mother’s immune system fights the illness with immune properties that pass into her milk. In this way, the baby receives protection from the specific illness to which he may have been exposed. If a mother were to stop breastfeeding when she became ill, the baby would lose out on that protection. During the cold and flu season, oftentimes a breastfed baby is the only one in the family to remain free of symptoms. If the baby does show symptoms, they are usually less severe and subside more quickly than for other family members. This protection continues for as long as a baby continues to nurse, although the greatest protection occurs when the baby is exclusively breastfeeding. Long-term health benefits of breastfeeding are being discovered as the first generation of artificially-fed infants are now in their fifties and sixties. Breastfeeding has been found to slow he development of a digestive disorder known as celiac disease, and has also been shown to protect against Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis in adulthood. Insulindependent diabetes occurs less in people who were breastfed. Also, breastfeeding has been shown to protect against subsequent obesity, at least through adolescence. Human milk for human babies Mother’s milk was designed specifically for a human baby, therefore, it provides all the right nutrients in the right amounts. The protein in breast milk is much easier for a baby to digest since it forms a smaller curd in the stomach. The amino acids in human milk are in all the right proportions. This is important for the development of the brain and nervous system. A recent study showed that premature babies who were fed their own mother’s milk in the early weeks of life had a significantly higher IQ at age sevenand-a-half and eight years than children who were artificially fed. Benefits to mother Breastfeeding provides the mother with a decreased risk of breast cancer. One study showed that the risk of breast cancer decreased as the number of months spent lactating increased. Another study showed that women who had breastfed 25 months or more were onethird less likely to develop breast cancer than women who had given birth but never breastfed. Another gift of breastfeeding is that of weight loss. One study showed that the tendency to store fat on the thighs was reduced in women who were breastfeeding. Another study showed that nursing mothers lost more weight without dieting by the time their babies were six-monthsold as compared to mothers who used artificial baby milk and who had been eating less. Mothers who are exclusively breastfeeding (that means no supplemental bottle or pacifiers and at least one nighttime nursing) experience a delay in the return of ovulation and menstruation. This benefit can offer natural child spacing and can also be a gift to women who suffer from premenstrual problems. Many families appreciate the gift of cash savings. Breastfeeding saves money not only because artificial baby milk purchases are unnecessary, but also because of fewer medical bills and possibly fewer orthodontic bills since breastfed babies have better jaw development. Gifts to Our World When a mother decides to breastfeed her baby, her decision actually affects our world. Pollution of air, water and land caused by the manufacturing of artificial baby milk is decreased along with use of energy resources need for heating up and storing artificial baby milk. Our world says “Thank you!” for this wonderful gift to all the breastfeeding mothers out there. The above list is just a “drop in the bucket” of the benefits of breastfeeding. Scientists are just beginning to scratch the surface when discovering more and more of these benefits. Your milk is alive, it’s perfect for your baby and it’s a great gift for you and for our world. I want to tell you about an amazing worthwhile program for pregnant teenagers. The program’s philosophy and curriculum are revolutionary and have the potential to have a profound national impact on our teen pregnancy, infant mortality, and child abuse rates. As the program expands, its ripple effect will be felt in as many communities as we can possibly begin programs. Each group that starts has a ten family limit. There are several crucial factors that distinguish Smart Beginnings/ Easy Preventions from other similar programs that try to address the problem of poverty and teenage pregnancy: The Smart Beginnings/ Easy Preventions program begins when the babies are in-utero. Thus begins the bonding process, which is an essential component to our program throughout the entire 5-year curriculum. It also helps to promote healthy full term pregnancies. Smart Beginnings also provides the moms with a stipend of $25.00 for each month they nurse their babies. Nursing is not only excellent for the health of the baby, but an excellent way to improve mother/child bonding, which is a key component to the success of our program. Smart Beginnings provides door to door transportation to ensure that these parenting teens, many of whom live from couch to couch, or worse, arrive safely and on time to their day of bonding and learning with their babies. Poor attendance is a large part of why other similar programs have not worked. Smart Beginnings’ day-long monthly meetings are supervised and taught by a range of professionals who are able to observe, assess, and support the mothers, babies, siblings and if available, fathers. We have babysitters at all times if the need arises. So far most classes have been set in a healing environment at Temescal Canyon Park in Pacific Palisades. During their day of learning and bonding with their babies, the participants enjoy three healthy meals and engage in one hour of group therapy and a two-hour professionally taught class. The classes include lactation education, infant growth and development, dealing with a crying baby, reading readiness, Planned Parenthood, CPR, CBT, Anger Management, etiquette, college, and job seeking skills. Families also participate in ‘Mommy and Me.’ Smart Beginnings includes literacy as a big part of the program for mother, baby, and if available, the father. It creates jobs for its graduates of the five year Smart Beginnings program as mentors to new groups of girls. Smart Beginnings/Easy Preventions is easily replicated in every city and state in our country. Currently there is a waiting list of pregnant girls from New Visions, and leaders on stand by to begin new groups in Los Angeles. Since May 2008 we have serviced ten expand, so that we can educate and support as many disenfranchised, underprivileged, pregnant teenage girls (and fathers when available) as possible in Los Angeles and beyond. Each year, almost 750,000 teenage women aged 15–19 become pregnant. Offspring from these As the program expands, its ripple effect will be During this holiday season, as we start off a new year with new resolutions, won’t you please consider helping this worthwhile program in any of the following ways: A financial contribution to Smart Beginnings/Easy Preventions (we are a 501c3) Federal tax ID # 26-3410234 Offer your services to do a website pro bono Get the girls into the Disney Concert Hall to experience Dudamel rehearsing Refrigerator to go to a mother in Van Nuys Diapers size 6 Clothes for 2 year olds Books for 2 year olds Books for 5 year olds Formula Bus passes cost $62.00 per month • • felt in many communities...please consider helping • this worthwhile program. • underprivileged teenage mothers, ten families have a high percentage of repeti• babies, two five year olds, and two of the tion of this behavior. Most come from the most tragic of circumstances: often raped, poor, abused, alone, but with the capacity and desire to become good mothers and the determination to end the cycle of poverty, abuse, neglect, and teenage pregnancy with their babies. In California alone, due to lack of access to proper care and education, almost 50% of teenage pregnancies result in mortality. The infant mortality rate in the U.S. is higher than in any other country. All Smart Beginnings mothers learn about nutrition, the importance of pre-natal care, have support throughout their pregnancies from other moms who are in their group, professionally taught parenting classes, and weekly phone calls. They all delivered very healthy, full term babies. They were encouraged to breastfeed and they all did; one mother still is. All of the babies are thriving. Smart Beginnings has a substantial waiting list of pregnant girls from Paul Cummins’ (founder of Crossroads and New Roads) Charter School for Pregnant and Parenting Teens. We have trained leaders ready to start new programs with groups of teenage mothers-to-be in Los Angeles, but we lack the proper funding that we need in order to be able to provide the intended four more years of our curriculum and support to the current group, and also to goals. All ten mothers had healthy, full term pregnancies. They all breastfed and have healthy, thriving babies. Babies only drink breast milk, formula, milk, or water; no sodas. All of the mothers completed high school and one is currently enrolled in college. The other nine moms also plan to attend college. There have been no charges of neglect or abuse from Social Services. They know not to hit and why, and have learned other methods of dealing with discipline. The mothers read to their babies often and have agreed to do so least 5 times a week. Please help provide the Smart Beginnings/Easy Preventions program to as many girls as possible; girls who have so little and who all tell me that they do not know what they would do without this program. Both may feel they know they need to bring focus to being the best parents, but do not bring that same level of concern, care, compassion and focus to their marriage! Arguments over feeling ignored personally, over who is doing more, over what needs aren't being met, and how to parent begin to fly. Add to that fatigue, conversations solely about the kids, different models of parenting from each partner's backgrounds, tighter financial restraints, and it's understandable that the marriage begins to suffer under the weight. Having children is a joy and filled with such depths of love and joy and opens one's heart in profound ways. But love looks a certain way when there are no children, and it looks another way when there are. Both are beautiful. Wouldn't it be wonderful though, to have your marriage look and feel as deep as the profound, head-over-heels love you have for you child(ren)? Following are some techniques to bring that back. Along with gestures of giving affection, listening deeply, being respectful, practicing forgiveness, managing household responsibilities in a fair and loving way, and nurturing your friendship with your spouse, try the following steps to ignite your relationship: Tip One Find out what says, "I love you" to your partner, then do it. Respond to who your partner is. If they are outdoorsy, then take a hike together. If they are a social person, encourage them to have a night out with friends. If they love their quiet time alone, take the kids out for the day and draw your partner a bath before you go. You get the idea. Tip Two Go on a date with your partner. Be sure you both put it on your calendars, then make a reservation at a great restaurant, get a babysitter, and dress up for the occasion. If you're feeling really crazy, skip dessert and spend some time in the back seat on your way home! Tip Three Work on your relationship every day. When you first wake up in the morning, think to yourself, "What can I do for my partner today?" This is about being mindful and prioritizing your relationship. Be flirtatious with your partner; be playful; be joyous. Do it for a week; see if you can't keep it going for a lifetime. Tip Four Practice asking for what you want and listening to what your partner wants. Here's an exercise you can do as many times as you like this week. Start by massaging your partner. Ask them to tell you exactly where and how they would like to be rubbed. Massage one part of your partner's body for ten minutes. Then switch. Now you give explicit instructions to your partner about how to rub your back, hands, head, or feet. Make sure you let them know when they are doing things just as you like and when they could adjust their pace, pressure, or movements a bit. Often, one of you will be more comfortable being the giver, and one the receiver. Taking turns helps create a more equal partnership. Once you're both comfortable giving massage directions, transfer your skills to your lovemaking. One night this week or next, when you make love, take turns pleasuring each other. Lovingly give directions for what you'd like your partner to do to you and they follow them. Then you switch. It's a powerful way to learn about your partner's needs, continued next column Children Change a Relationship Return To "Head-Over-Heels!" with your partner! Bringing Home a baby is an exciting and wonderful time. It is also a life-altering, impactful one. With the changes in sleep, hormones, roles, focus and income, life for couples changes drastically. The magnitude of becoming a mother can be felt at any time during this life transition, and each new mother will respond uniquely to the realization of how fundamentally important she is to her infant. A women’s response can take the form of awe and wonderment, or it can present as overwhelm and undeniable fear. Infants have an innate ability to invoke feelings in their caregivers through the use of non-verbal communication, and their very survival and development depends on how these communications are responded to by those who nurture them. When a new mother comes into contact with the feelings of powerlessness and vulnerability inherent in caring for a new baby, she may become overwhelmed by these primitive feelings leading to a challenging postpartum experience. An infant’s helplessness, dependency, and defenselessness can leave a mother feeling inadequate and uncertain about her capacity to care for her baby, which can lead to depression, anxiety, and other challenges in the parenting role. When a new mother feels overwhelmed by the responsibility of caring for her infant, she is often struck with the urge to run or escape her situation. She may feel horrified that she can even contemplate this as an option, but it is important for her to understand that she is not fleeing from her child, she is running from the intolerable feelings being stirred up in her by the vicissitudes of this new life role. To be the center of another person’s universe, and to experience the incredible depth of dependency and need that comes with being responsible for a human life is at the very core of what it means to be a mother. This can be a particularly difficult concept for a woman who has not had the opportunity to know about these places within herself, or who was not able to have adaptive experiences within the context of her own childhood. A new baby can open up old wounds in a new mother that may have never been in her consciousness. While society dictates that every woman will adapt easily and happily to the maternal role, the potential to experience deep and abiding joy in mothering depends on a woman’s willingness to confront and live mindfully with the emotional conflicts and ambivalence that flow from the routine interactions of day-to-day caregiving. Motherhood necessitates a willingness to internally connect with the most vulnerable, needy and dependent places within, and a capacity to use this information to understand and relate to the infant’s internal world. Every mother and baby deserves the opportunity to develop a healthy, satisfying relationship, and this can only happen if truth replaces myth, and we as a society begin to open ourselves up to the incredible reality of a new mother’s world. Change a relationship (continued from previous column) but more importantly, learn how to ask for what you like in the bedroom. Tip Five Reserve one hour of time each week for sex. After a hard day at work, the kids are tucked in, the bills are paid, and the house is relatively neat, who wants to be intimate? Set aside one hour of quality time for intimacy. Believe it or not, this can increase your satisfaction with lovemaking more than any other change you might make. You don't have to have sex during the hour if neither of you is in the mood or the conditions aren't right (one of you is sick, exhausted, sore, etc.). But if the feelings are right, you'll have set aside a full hour without distractions for a satisfying sensual experience. wet set gazette | 2009/2010 www.dy-dee.com p a r e n t i n g 7 (800) 80-dydee Eat, Drink and be Merry by Shawna Traver he holidays are here! Eat, drink and be merry! For the rest of the year try to eat healthy, drink water, have fun with friends, and you will be merry! There are a couple of ways to help keep your choices healthy during the busy holidays. From planning ahead, swapping coffee with walking, and hosting a soup exchange you will notice the difference in how your party clothes fit this season! Eat According to Registered Dietician Ann Foley of Arizona, there are a few quick tips to help you cope with all the holiday eating. “My biggest tip would be to plan ahead. If you are going to a party that will have a lot of junk food, cookies, chips, cocktails, etc (which is usually every party), it is helpful to eat healthy before you go. This may take really good discipline, but it can be done! Another good option is to bring a healthy dish with you, that you have prepared. This way you know exactly what is in it (no hidden calorie surprises). Finally, whatever you do decide to eat at the party, put the amount you decide to eat on a plate, when it is gone- it is gone. Do not stand around the food table and just keep picking at the snacks/food. Watch what you eat, especially while socializing, one may consume way more calories that they would ever realize.” Another big pound adder during the holidays is sugar. The Guideline Daily Amount of added sugar for a 2,000 calorie diet is 125 g of sugar per day. Do yourself a favor, and read the labels of what you buy at the grocery store. Limit your self to one treat per week. If you absolutely must have a slice of grandmas pumpkin pie, oblige yourself, but pass on the caramel corn. The season is about choices, not denying your self an occasional treat. For those of you pregnant or postpartum, there is a helpful book, Fit to Deliver, by Nordahl, Petersen, and Jeffreys. In terms of how many extra calories required while pregnant, they advise, “Although just 100 extra calories per day will do in your first trimester, you will need to consume around 300 extra calories per day in order to support your growing baby…” And for postpartum moms, “Breastfeeding is recommended as the optimal method of feeding your baby for up to the first year…(and) although breastfeeding and returning to your regular exercise program will enhance weight loss, you should avoid strict dieting.” If you are pregnant, a new mom, or a mother with older children, there are many ways to treat your body right during this busy holiday season! So enjoy your parties and eat right! Drink Another easy fix to avoid holiday weight gain is to trade grabbing coffee with a friend for walking with a friend. The holidays give us a great excuse to catch up with old buddies and reconnect with loved ones. If you want to spend some time with someone, suggest meeting at a park or a lake, and power walk for one hour. During the time you would have spent drinking a latte sedentary, you will have gotten a full hour of cardio and walked a few miles, and still had time to catch up. Instead of drinking empty calorie coffee, you can substitute it with zero calorie water. You will feel more full and you will be hydrated too. You can also use the money you saved on not buying a latte and donate it to your favorite charity the spirit of giving. Outdoor exercise is a great idea for new moms. You may want to take a stroll with the new mommy friend you made at your Mommy and Me class. Be sure to consult your doctor before beginning or resuming any physical activity after birth. The babies will love being outside, and you and your new mom friend will have a chance to connect and get some exercise. Check out www.strollerstrides.com for a fun outdoor workout for moms and babies! Cheers to that! Be Merry Instead of hosting the usual cookie exchange, this year, try a Soup Swap. The idea is the same, just healthier! You invite your friends over to your house. Each person makes 6 (six) quart size containers of home made soup with the recipe attached. They can be frozen, or ready to be frozen. Each guest goes home with six homemade soups to try! This refreshing idea eliminates the consumption of too many sugar laden cookies. In exchange, the homemade healthy soup can be used for a warm nutritious dinner at home with the family on those hectic nights during the holidays. Do yourself a favor and for this night treat yourself to a night out with the ladies! Have a mom’s only night at the soup swap. You can place out healthy and tasty refreshments and moms can catch up with each other. In an evening of good cheer and good health, a merry time will be had all around! Continue in your spirit of giving on this festive night by having each guest bring a can of soup to donate to a local shelter. With a few changes this season you can really enjoy yourself at all of your upcoming events and festivities. photo: Shutterstock T Just remember to: 1) Plan ahead so you don’t nosh on too much junk 2) Combine fitness and friendship with lots of water 3) Focus on tasty new ideas, fun and giving Follow these quick tips, and you can Eat, Drink and Be Merry the whole Season and the whole year! Holiday Blessings! Shawna Traver shawnatraver@yahoo.com www.strollerstrides.com Shawna is a CPFT (Certified Personal Fitness Trainer) and mom of three. Is it really cold? Your baby wants to know! Well, we don’t get much snow in the cities of Southern California, but the mountains get plenty each year. Check the snow report, bundle up your baby and head for the hills! The easiest way to find snow is to head up Angeles Crest Highway. If you have chains, bring them. Sometimes you will get stopped and turned around without chains, depending on the weather forecast and the last time it snowed. And remember your Adventure Pass. For a baby or a toddler, you don’t need a whole ski resort – only a little (clean) patch of snow beside the road. If you have a sled, all the better. There are several makeshift sledding hills along the highway. Warm winters offer other special activities for babies and toddlers. Southern California is on the Pacific Flyway, which means migrating birds pass through here on their way to warmer climates. Some even stay for the winter. You can find these birds, along with the resident ducks, geese and coots, at lakes around the area. Favorite stopovers with stroller-friendly paths are the Los Angeles Arboretum, the South Coast Botanical Gardens and Puddingstone Lake (also known as Frank G. Bonelli Park). Look for a bird identification card or book in the gift shops and keep it in your diaper bag. Winter is also the time camellias are in bloom. Splendid gardens may include your front yard, or you may want to visit Descanso or Huntington Garden, both of which have acres and acres of camellia forests of all colors and varieties. Toddlers love to pick the camellias. While this is not a good idea at Descanso or the Huntington, you may want to consider letting your child gather flowers in your own yard. There are phases of camellia picking every child goes through. The first stage is to pick the buds only. This is the most frustrating stage but the most fun for your child and a good opportunity to learn sorting skills! The second stage is to wait for the buds to blossom and then pick only the blossoms. You can survive this stage by floating the blossoms in bowls of water. Then comes the stage of a thousand bouquets – enough for every room in your house and a daily bunch for the nursery school teacher. This stage is sadly followed by the one-bouquet-per-season-if-you-are-lucky stage. So enjoy the picking years while they last. Your plants and your child will thrive! www.dy-dee.com by JoBea Holt Author of “Baby’s Day Out in Southern California - Fun Places to Go With Babies and Toddlers” (Gem Guides Co., 2006, second edition) – a travel guide to help moms and dads find more adventures with your baby. (800) 80-dydee At Sierra Madre Community Nursery School, we seek to meet the needs, abilities and interests of each child through play experiences. Play is the primary way children explore, experiment, discover, invent, create and learn about the world. We see play as an essential medium for developmental learning, as well as the foundation for later academic learning. Because we recognize that play contributes to all types of learning, including physical, social, emotional and intellectual, we have created an environment which allows us to structure a program based on play. Our program stresses freedom with limits. It offers a time and a place for children (and adults) to The Pre-K and Kindergarten program offers: • A balanced approach to academic, social-emotional and physical growth • A nurturing environment to enhance a child’s self esteem • An enriched curriculum because of parent participation in the classroom • More choice for the child • Room to grow at one’s own pace solve problems and to make choices and decisions about activities, participation and social relationships. Within that structure, the program is flexible. It meets the pace, needs, abilities and interests of each child as well as the group as a whole, with the ability to change and adapt as the day and year progresses. 701 E Sierra Madre Blvd, Sierra Madre Phone: 626-355-1655 www.smcns.org Email: info@smcns.org Dy-Dee Diaper Baby Supplies Order these products at (800) 80-DyDee or online at www.dy-dee.com and have them delivered to your door with your next diaper delivery. 1. (800) 80-dydee 14 p a r e n t i wet set gazette | 2009/2010 n g www.dy-dee.com (800) 80-dydee Handling Unwanted Advice Surviving Family Get-Togethers and Your “Helpful” Relatives by Elizabeth Pantley; Excerpted with permission by McGraw-Hill Publishing from Gentle Baby Care (McGraw-Hill 2003) "H elp! I’m getting so frustrated with the endless stream of advice I get from my mother-in-law and brother! No matter what I do, I’m doing it wrong. I love them both, but how do I get them to stop dispensing all this unwanted advice?” Just as your baby is an important part of your life, he is also important to others. People who care about your baby are bonded to you and your child in a special way that invites their counsel. Knowing this may give you a reason to handle the interference gently, in a way that leaves everyone’s feelings intact. Regardless of the advice, it is your baby, and in the end, you will raise your child the way that you think best. So it’s rarely worth creating a war over a wellmeaning person’s comments. You can respond to unwanted advice in a variety of ways: Listen first It’s natural to be defensive if you feel that someone is judging you; but chances are you are not being criticized; rather, the other person is sharing what they feel to be valuable insight. Try to listen — you may just learn something valuable. Disregard If you know that there is no convincing the other person to change her mind, simply smile, nod, and make a noncommittal response, such as, “Interesting!” Then go about your own business...your way. Agree You might find one part of the advice that you agree with. If you can, provide wholehearted agreement on that topic. Pick your battles Be vague Be honest If your mother-in-law insists that Baby wear a hat on your walk to the park, go ahead and pop one on his head. This won’t have any long-term effects except that of placating her. However, don’t capitulate on issues that are important to you or the health or well-being of your child. You can avoid confrontation with an elusive response. For example, if your sister asks if you’ve started potty training yet (but you are many months away from even starting the process), you can answer with, “We’re moving in that direction.” Try being honest about your feelings. Pick a time free of distractions and choose your words carefully, such as, “I know how much you love Harry, and I’m glad you spend so much time with him. I know you think you’re helping me when you give me advice about this, but I’m comfortable with my own approach, and I’d really appreciate if you’d understand that.” Ask for advice! Your friendly counselor is possibly an expert on a few issues that you can agree If your brother is pressuring you to let on. Search out these points and invite your baby cry to sleep, but you would guidance. She’ll be happy that she is never do that, then don’t complain to helping you, and you’ll be happy you have him about your baby getting you up five a way to avoid a showdown about topics times the night before. If he brings up that you don’t agree on. the topic, then distraction is definitely in order, such as, “Would you like a cup of coffee?” Steer clear of the topic Find a mediator If the situation is putting a strain on your relationship with the advice-giver, you may want to ask another person to step in for you. Educate yourself Knowledge is power; protect yourself and your sanity by reading up on your parenting choices. Rely on the confidence that you are doing your best for your baby Educate the other person If your “teacher” is imparting information that you know to be outdated or wrong, share what you’ve learned on the topic. You may be able to open the other person’s mind. Refer to a study, book, or report that you have read. Quote a doctor Many people accept a point of view if a professional has validated it. If your own pediatrician agrees with your position, Memorize a standard response say, “My doctor said to wait until she’s at Here’s a comment that can be said in least six months before starting solids.” response to almost any piece of advice: If your own doctor doesn’t back your “This may not be the right way for you, view on that issue, then refer to another but it’s the right way for me.” doctor — perhaps the author of a baby care book. Search out like-minded friends Join a support group or on-line club with people who share your parenting philosophies. Talking with others who are raising their babies in a way that is similar to your own can give you the strength to face people who don’t understand your viewpoints.
