After adding in 1927 one storey on the square-shaped tower adjacent to the pilot station building, constructed of red brick with facing, the lighthouse was constructed and it has survived until our times in unchanged appearance. Being located at the base of the east breakwater, shielding the entrance to the port in Darłówek, it is exposed to action of strong sea waves, during storms occurring quite often in this area. A lighthouse was commissioned between Darłowo and Łeba in 1838, having a shape of a four-storey round tower made of red brick. It was shining uninterruptedly for more than one hundred years, until the Second World War, during which it was heavily destroyed. Only within a year after the war it started its operation anew. All the lighthouse buildings apart from the Kikut lighthouse are made available for visiting by tourists every day from 10 to 18. 12 Leisure time in Zachodniopomorskie The Westpomeranian Sailing Trail The town hall in Nowe Warpno Świnoujscie The Westpomeranian Sailing Trail consists of a network of ports and marinas in the region of Szczecin, Szczecin Lagoon and the West Pomeranian Baltic coast. There are a lot of medieval architecture preserved both in the city itself and its surroundings. Thanks to beautiful landscape, unique greenery and waters (Kamieński Bay, River Dziwna, Wrzosowskie Lake) this place is a paradise not only for patients but also for hikers, bikers, yachtsmen and fishermen. Each summer, Kamień Pomorski becomes the capital of Chamber and Organ Music Festival which is famous not only in Poland but also abroad and is organized periodically since 1965. Kołobrzeg is one of the most beautiful resorts in Poland. Centuries ago the city was located on “the Salt Track” and was known from salt mining. Today it is called “The Baltic Pearl”. The name was granted by pre-war patients due to local mineral water (brine), peat, climate and beautiful greenery. Visitors can see medieval layout of the city and Basilica with priceless examples of gothic art. Połczyn Zdrój is located within the Połczyńska Switzerland area. Healing properties of local mineral waters were discovered at the end of the 17th century. The first spa house was built in 1709. Today, Połczyn Zdrój is referred to as a resort with spirit. This is due to surrounding parks and gardens, beautiful Old City with medieval layout of streets enhanced by charming old tenements and romantic cafes. The resort is also famous for peat and brine and the sensational Spa Park with many trees, bushes and flower carpets. Until the end of thirties of the 20th century, Świnoujście had been one of the most popular Baltic resorts. Its sensational resources such as brine waters, climate and healing traditions returned into memory only after 1960. From then on Świnoujście blooms with tourists and patients. In addition the city offers many attractions such as: fortification form the 19th century, the highest Baltic lighthouse, breakwater that goes far into the sea, birds’ sanctuary: Krasiborska Kępa”, Fishing Museum and much more. The Drawa route takes 10 days to travel through. The Szczeciniecka Loop is an unusual canoeing rally, which starts and ends on the Trzesiecko Lake in Szczecinek. The shorter and much easier part of the rally starts and ends in the Gwda Wielka village by the first bridge over the Gwda river. The rally runs through rivers Niezdobna, Gwda and Dołga, which connect the following lakes: Trzesiecko, Wieli- mie, Dołgie, Młyńskie, Dębno, Łąkie, Studnica, Wierzchowo and Smolęsko. The river requires good skills and steady effort from rally participants, but makes it up with beautiful landscape of the Szczecinieckie Protected Area. Travelling the whole loop takes 3 to 5 days. Rega is the perfect offer for all those, who would like to rest on a sea beach after the rally. The rally route is quite easy for beginners and for those who do not like to get too tired. Despite its recreational character, Rega is very diversified. Almost the whole rally route runs through forests and occasionally through clear lakes. In some places the river is so swift that it is hardly necessary to paddle, so our muscles can rest. The rally can be ended at whatever place selected, but we suggest canoeing to Mrzeżyno, which is a famous seaside resort with a clean beach and a relaxing microclimate. Among the protected species of fauna there appear the following fish species (salmon, sea trout, grayling, Baltic whitefish, European whitefish), amphibians (tree frog, crest newt), reptiles (marsh turtle, smooth snake, viper), birds (white-tailed sea eagle, osprey, eagle owl, kingfisher, mountain wagtail, cormorant) and Mammalia (beavers and otters). In the remaining part of the region several Landscape Parks have been established. In the area connecting the Forest of Gorzów and the Myslibórz Lake District there is situated the Barlinek– Gorzów Landscape Park. In the Odra river valley two landscape areas have been established. The first one is the Cedynia Landscape Park, situated in the Odra river valley and west of the valley - the pine tree woods and mixed woods of Sandy Forest and of the Mieszkowice Woods. Taking advantage of numerous viewing spots (the highest one is Zwierzyniec - 167 m above sea level) one can admire the wonderful panorama of moraine hills cut through with valleys of rivers and streams. In the park area there are 104 lakes of surface exceeding 1 ha. The biggest one of them – the Morzycko lake – is at the same time the deepest one in Poland (60 m). The Complex of Landscape Parks of the Lower Odra River comprises the municipalities of Widuchowa, Gryfino, Kołbaskowo, and partly the city of Szczecin. In its area there are peat bogs and marshes cut through with a network of canals and old river beds, with flora and fauna not encountered any more in valleys of other large rivers. One can meet here over 200 species of birds and nearly 100 complexes of exceptional vegetation. There are also numerous reptiles, amphibians and insects (as many as The Complex of Landscape Parks of the Lower Odra River ul. In the south-eastern end of Szczecin the Szczecin Landscape Park – Bukowa Forest is located. These are the Bukowe Hills, covered with extensive woods, making the range of the highest, in this part of Pomerania, moraine hills cut through with deep valleys. The deepest ones of them are taken by peat bogs and lakes - the largest ones are the Glinna Lake and the Binowskie Lake. The curiosity is the picturesque Szmaragdowe Lake that was formed in place of the mine of Cretaceous Limestones, flooded in 1925 by undergorund waters. In the woods of the Bukowa Forest the 18 species of orchids and 328 species of mushrooms are growing. As regards fauna, we can encounter here, apart from other animals, fox, badger, ermine, weasel as well as roe deer, deer and wild boar. Szczecin is surrounded from Forest in Uroczysko Sicienko, Drawiński National Park the northern west by the Wkrzańska Forest. There are many walking and cycling trails running through the forest. You can chance on many archeological excavation sites in the forest, and first of all – on the Świdwie Lake Nature Reserve with Waterfowl. It is one of the most important in Europe Birds Observation Stand, from which you can watch i.a. cranes, orioles, mud birds, white-tailed sea eagles, red kites and ruffs. This Reserve has been recorded in the International RAMSAR Convention as one of the major wetlands on the global scale. In the Lake District of Ińsko the Ińsko Landscape Park has been created, protecting the end moraine ridges covered with woods and reaching the height of 180 m above sea level. The following species of birds are nesting here: white-tailed sea eagle, black stork, lesser spotted eagle, red and black kites, and the number of the nesting cranes is the highest in Poland. A little bit further - in central part of the Drawsko Lake District – the Drawsko Landscape Park is situated. It covers the area shaped during the so called Baltic Glaciation. Its remains are the end moraine hills, ravines, erratic blocks, postglacial channel lakes, small ponds and peat bogs. The largest and the deepest out of more than 48 big lakes are the respectively listed ones: the Drawsko lake, the Siecino lake and the Komorze lake. There occur unusually treasured, in terms of natural values, the lobelia lakes, with relict postglacial vegetation. The vegetation growing in woods comprises, among other plants: woodbine honeysuckle (Lonicera periclymenum), mezereon, martagon lily, common bearberry (Arctostaphylos Uvaursi), aconite (Aconitum Napellus), sundews, yokes and orchids. The streams amd lakes are the habitats of 35 species of fish, including: Baltic whitefish, European whitefish, barbel, chub and brown trout. Among birds the following species are represented in great numbers: grebes, swans, ducks and cranes. The following species threatened with extinction are also nesting here: white-tailed sea eagle, lesser spotted eagle, eagle owl, kite, black stork, and bittern. At the southern end of the Bukowa forest the first private forest nurseries were established. About 1870 they were taken over by state-owned forest division (forest inspectorate). Then the forest inspector Carl Ludwig Gené contributed to planting of new exotic individuals of trees, bushes and shrubs, out of which only few ones have survived until now. Thus the foundation of the Dendrological Garden in Glinna was created, it was recorded for the first time in 1911 in a publication by A. Schwappach. Since 1970 the garden has been taken care of by the Gryfino Forest Inspectorate. From that period the following species of trees have survived: the individuals of beeches, limes, ashes, and among the foreign species: plane tree, weymouth pines, white cedar (Thuja Occidentalis), maidenhair tree (Ginkgo Biloba). The total change in the park structure took place in the period from 1933 to 38, when the Przelewice Park was owned by Conrad von Borsig, a member of the German Debdrological Society. It was at his order and with his participation that the new arrangement of the garden, preserved until now, was created . The stay of the Templars in the Pomeranian Kingdom lasted slightly over 100 years. Already in the first half of the 14th century their property was taken over by the knights of Jerusalem Order. However, stories and films about the Templar result in much attention being given to them still nowadays, and we follow their path and visit the places where their relicts are preserved not in haunt of the treasure but in hope of finding their legend and enriching our holidays. Chwarszczany Commandery in Chwarszczany was the most important not only in Pomeranian. This is proven by the fact that the local commander was also the preceptor of the order in Poland, New Marchia, Czech Lands and Moravia. The Templar settled here due to the generosity of the Great Poland’s Prince, Władysław Odonicz and following the endowment from prince Barnima I from Szczecin. The last notice regarding Templar Order dates back to 1308. In 1335, Chwarszczany was already occupied by Knights of Jerusalem. After the Reformation the village ceased to be the order’s location. Today we can visit the gothic chapel restored at the end of the 19th century which is the only memento of Templar. Currently there are excavation works conducted within the old commandery premises. Additionally, for a few years every August a historic feast has been taking place by the chapel with knights fighting and medieval culture workshops. It belonged indeed. In 1291, the Templar was granted this land under the edict of Przemysł, the prince of Kalisz. Despite the fact that their jurisdiction over this land was short, they managed to build the castle here, which is mentioned in documents from 1346 when Czaplinek fell into the hands of the knights of Jerusalem. Unfortunately, in 1376 it was destroyed by Świętobor, the Prince of Szczecin, so we are not able to determine the exact location of the Templar’s seat. Luckily, knights of Jerusalem decided to build the Drahim castle in Post Cistercians’ order in Kołbacz neighboring Stary Drawsk. By now only ruins remained but they are the perfect place for historic events, including Templar reunions. Their incoming brought the development of science, culture, medicine, craft and agriculture. 7 convents were created then on the West Pomeranian area (Cedynia, Koszalin, Marianowo, Pełczyce, Recz, Szczecin, Wolin) and 3 monasteries (Bierzwnik, Bukowo Morskie, Kołbacz). Reformation, which in 16th century included Pomeranian Principality because of prince Bogusław X, caused the Cistercian convents and monasteries to be cancelled, and the buildings became the property of Principality. To our times, post-Cistercian buildings in Bierzwnik survived (cellars of the west wing, fragments of gallery and lower floors of east and south wing), in Cedynia (west wing; nowadays a hotel and a restaurant), in Koszalin (nave of today’s Church of St. Trinity), in Kołbacz (post-Cistercian church, Converse House, Abbot House), in Marianowo (west wing, relics of east wing, two gothic portals in post-convent church), in Pełczyce (west wing and part of convent cellars). The route includes the most interesting historical buildings of military architecture at east and west sides of Świna mouth. It starts in the oldest and the most interesting defense object of the left river bank – Eastern Fort, also functioning under the name of “Gerhard Fort”. It is one of the best preserved 19th century coastal forts in our part of Europe. Built by Prussian fortification engineers, it was one of four fundamental defense constructions contributing to Świnoujście Naval Stronghold. Many surprises are prepared for tourists, among others: contest for saber of the commander, night maneuvers, searching for treasure. Eastern fort, Świnoujście On the right river bank two other forts are located. West Artillery Fort, built in years 1856-61, constituted once one of four fortification objects at Świna mouth designed for the defense of port entrance and to take eventual battle with ships at the sea. At present West Fort has an exhibition of several torpedoes and cannons, among others, naval ones. During summer season, occasionally flea markets and military stuff fairs for hobbyists are organized. In Angel’s Fort, which was built in years 1845-58 based on Hadrian Mausoleum – today’s St. Angel’s Castle in Rome, exhibitions of painting, sculpture, photography, music concerts and meetings with poetry are held. During Hitler’s preparation stage to war in 1934 r. an intensive construction of fortifications was started going from the Baltic Sea in Darłowo region up to so-called Międzyrzecze Fortified Region. In the area of Nadarzyce, Wałcz and Strzaliny bunkers and pill-boxes were built with walls 210 cm thick and ceilings 190 cm thick. The equipment consisted of medium caliber rapid-fire cannons, antitank cannons, heavy machineguns and mortars. The bunkers were placed every 400 – 600 m. providing for cross-fire coverage of the en- tire foreground. Hard and bloody fights for crossing the Pomeranian Wall took place in the beginning of 1945. Today, the proofs of these days are the remains of destroyed bunkers and pillboxes in the forests of Wałeckie Lake District as well as exhibitions in museums. To commemorate these events, the Rally of Fortifications’ Route of Pomeranian Wall is organized in Wałeckie Lake District every year in the first decade of June. Crossing the ruins of post-German buildings and the remainders of post-Russian fir- ing grounds leave amazing impressions. The staying program does not lack paintball training, bungee jumping, mountain-climbing, offroad trike driving or hand-to-hand fight training. The schools of survival are organized in Drawskie Lake District as well as in neighborhoods of Kołobrzeg, Wałcz and Pyrzyce. Apart from this, the region is characterized by a considerable diversity of water basins, from small charming rivers, streams, brooks, lowland rivers, ponds, bays and lagoons to the Baltic sea waters. This creates excellent conditions for living and migration of most of fish species typical of our climatic zone. Owing to this fact, every angler will find some spots most appropriate for practising his/her favourite angling method: float type, ledger type, spinning type, fly type and sea type method. Gowienica, Wołczenica, Parsęta, Radew, Wieprza, Grabowa eel – the seaside lakes: Resko, Bukowo, Jamno - the Odra river, the Międzyodrze waters, the lakes: Przybiernów, Chociwel, Drawsko, Lubie, Dąbie The West-Pomeranian rivers are full of fishes flowing into them from the Baltic Sea. It is possible to hook therein sea trouts and salmons. The Dziwna river attracts anglers with abundance of roaches that arrive here for spawning from the whole Pomeranian Bay. The Parsęta and Drawa rivers, looking in some their sections like mountain streams, are full of trouts. And in all the rivers you can hope for hooking a fine-looking pike. Our lakes are infinite fisheries of healthy-looking specimens of perch, grayling, Baltic whitefish, roach... You can list the names of fish species endlessly. The abundance of fish is first of all the achievement of good fish farm holders that care for regular stocking with fry and restocking and guard that angling is carried out in compliance with established principles and rules. Having an appropriate authorisation [angling licence] you can angle almost everywhere – but those more patient and keener anglers, for whom it is first of all the pleasure of staing têteà-tête with nature that counts, will sit down with their fishing rods by the river, by the lake or by the pond . Who, being an angler, would like to experience a great adventure should think about angling at the Baltic Sea. You can do it, of course, from the seashore, but you will feel the greatest emotions when going out to sea on fishing cutter or in a special motor sailing boat. In the Pomeranian Bay you can angle beautiful pikeperches, perches, breams and flounders. Departing from other ports out to the sea you may hope for impressive garpikes, cod(fishes), flounders, salmons or Baltic herrings, which after smoking or frying taste exceptionally delicious. The cruelty of Flemmings was legendary; they supposedly tortured and killed local peasants in the old castle. From 17th century the old castle is desolate. In 19th century, high Flemmings’ income allows them to start the construction of a new seat. In 1899, a splendid family residence is completed – today’s Maciejewo Palace. It is located in a wonderful surrounding at Lechickie Lake. It is 50 km from Stettin and 12 km from international airport in Goleniów. In the building there are 48 comfortably furnished rooms, a restaurant, conference rooms, indoor swimming pool and year-round recreational bungalows located in 15hectare park. Near the palace the hunting grounds and golf courses are located, there is also an opportunity of horse riding. In 14th century Ludwik and Lamprecht von Wedel founded in Tuczno a gothic fortified construction. The castle was an important strategic point because of its location on the border of Brandenburg and Wałecka Grounds. The castle was rebuilt twice in the 2nd half of 16th century and at the beginning of 17th century, which caused the change from a fortified structure into a baroque palace residence. With the death of the last member of Wedel family – Andrzej Tuczyński in 1717, the castle changed hands, becoming more and more neglected. During Second World War the castle, constituting a part of German fortifications of Pomeranian Wall, was blown up, and then burnt down. In the years 1966 – 1967 the castle was rebuilt in renaissance – baroque forms from the beginning of 18th century. Society of Polish Architects SARP has been opened here with a conference center, hotel and a restaurant. Over 100 lodgings are at disposal of visitors. The residence is surrounded by a spacious park with old forest stand. 15th century knight castle is included to the most interesting and the biggest historical buildings in Poland. First historical inscriptions about the castle come from 1450. The castle belonged for over 4 centuries to a brave, knight Podewils family. It was long known for sumptuous balls in amply adorned rooms and unparalleled hospitality.
