THEATRE honors MILLER’S Recipient of the 2015 BRAVO Award THEATRE honors JIM HANLEY Recipient of the 2015 BRAVO Award Joseph Miller founded Miller’s bicycle and baby carriage shop in 1908 in Harlem, New York. In 1948, Joseph’s son Irving opened Miller’s in Mamaroneck. The store was originally across the street from the current location, and less than ten years later moved into the current building. The store prospered with their first generation of Westchester customers in the 1950s and 1960s, primarily as a bicycle shop and burgeoning toy store. Irv’s brother-in-law Eric Morley joined soon after, and was also known to a generation of customers and children as “Mr. Miller.” And until very recently, Eric and his wife Zelda would continue to help customers select and wrap gifts during the busy holiday season. In the 1970s, Irv’s daughter Diane and husband John McKiernan took over the store and essentially built it into the business that it is today. In 2003, John’s oldest daughter Brooke and then-boyfriend Taka Andrews moved from California to New York to work at the store. Now married with three young children, Brooke and Taka own and operate Miller’s, building off of the efforts of Irv, Eric and John. They are currently looking forward to expanding the children’s clothing and shoe department, and searching out the best in children’s clothing and gear in 2015 and beyond. Says Taka, “Every week, we have the pleasure of hearing ‘I got my first bike at Miller’s, and now I’m here for my son’s first bike.’ It is this sense of honor and obligation to the history at Miller’s that motivates us and inspires us, and keeps us coming to work week after week. We’re incredibly fortunate to have three and sometimes four generations of customers continuing to visit and support us and allow us to be a part of this community.” Jim Hanley, the co-founder and president of Taconic Builders, is not only a builder by trade but has been instrumental in building community by his involvement in local organizations. He is the co-founder and president of Fields for Kids, spearheading the renovation and expansion of local playing fields to give more children access to sports. Jim is a coordinator of the local Midnight Run, has been involved in projects for Habitat for Humanity and serves on the building committee of Larchmont Avenue Church. He has also served on the Village of Mamaroneck Board of Architectural Review. He provided assistance to local homeowners after the floods in 2007, hurricane Irene and super storm Sandy. A board member of the Museum of the City of New York and a member of the New York Landmarks Conservancy, Jim, his wife Heidi and three children have lived in Mamaroneck for 29 years and are long-time supporters of the Emelin.
