SENTRY360 2014 YEAR IN REVIEW MORE THAN AN INSURANCE COMPANY Sentry Insurance has provided business insurance for more than a century, ever since members of the Wisconsin Retail Hardware Association formed the company in 1904 as a mutual organization supplying quality insurance to its members. We have grown and evolved as a company a great deal since then, extending our presence into different markets and across the country. We’ve also become much more than a company that sells insurance. To truly understand what Sentry is, how we’re different, and why that matters to our stakeholders, let’s take a 360-degree look at what we offer our member-customers, our associates, and the communities we call home. Sentry 360 is a way of seeing the big picture—how what we do fits into the greater context of meaningful things. 360-DEGREE VISION LEADERSHIP COMMITTED TO STRONG VALUES Our goals go beyond profit. A holistic approach to the health and growth of this company, as well as our associates and our communities, naturally leads to greater overall success. It’s my great pleasure to share Sentry’s 2014 Annual Report. Sentry is more than an insurance company. This year’s theme, “Sentry 360,” references the full-spectrum view of what we offer our customers, associates, and the communities in which we live and work. Insurance is what helped Sentry grow into the company it is today. Over time, our ability to help our customers evolved in other ways. We are now known for helping customers improve safety, and control claims and manage employee benefits. Innovation, Inspiration, Integrity. Sentry Insurance has been offering each to our customers for more than 100 years. Sentry had a very good financial year in 2014. Five of our seven businesses grew. Policyholders’ surplus grew $90 million to nearly $4.2 billion dollars. We surpassed $10 billion in cash and invested assets, while comfortably meeting our financial obligations. This included funding the rising costs of our retiree benefits in light of longer life spans and a continued low interest rate environment. For the 24th consecutive year, we maintained our A.M. Best rating of A+ and remain one of the most strongly capitalized companies in the insurance industry. At the same time, we continued to invest heavily in our business and honor our commitment to the community. A+ RATING* We are becoming a technology leader in many of our businesses. By 2016, all major technology platforms will be replaced. This half billion dollar investment is transforming how we do business, satisfying customer demands for faster transactions and real-time access to Sentry, and allowing us to use data in more nimble ways to make better decisions. As a mutual company, community support and involvement is a cornerstone of Sentry. Together, Sentry associates and the Sentry Insurance Foundation contributed more than $1 million to local United Way organizations. Additionally, the Sentry Insurance Foundation contributed nearly $4 million to education, arts, human service, and civic organizations. Perhaps the most visible community investment is the opening of a revitalized SentryWorld golf course, sports, and events complex. The community’s response has been beyond our wildest imagination. We are thrilled the Stevens Point area has embraced this resource. A.M. BEST • 24 YEARS IN A ROW FINANCIAL STRENGTH OVER $4.2 BILLION POLICYHOLDERS’ SURPLUS OVER $10 BILLION IN CASH AND INVESTED ASSETS With these achievements, as well as the dedication to our policyholders that comes from being a mutual company, I am confident that the positive trends we have seen in 2014 will continue into 2015 and beyond. We are poised for growth and continued success. 4000 SENTRY ASSOCIATES WORK IN 41 Pete McPartland Sentry Insurance STATES Chairman of the Board, President and CEO * Applies to property and casualty companies 2 SPHERES OF INFLUENCE— INDUSTRIES OF EXPERTISE SentryWorld THE BIG PICTURE Sentry Insurance a Mutual Company—our formal name—was founded by members of the Wisconsin Retail Hardware Association more than a century ago. We got our start providing insurance to WRHA member-customers. Today, Sentry is one of the largest and strongest mutual insurance companies in the United States. Sentry and its subsidiaries sell property and casualty insurance, life insurance, annuities, and retirement programs for businesses and individuals throughout the country. A world-caliber 18-hole golf course anchors a sports and event facility on property adjacent to the Sentry home office. For more information on this jewel in the community, see pages 16-17. DAIRYLAND CONSUMER National Accounts Sentry’s National Accounts works through brokers to provide insurance programs to large organizations with complex risks. B2B A Wider View Because Sentry is a mutual company, we do not have shareholders and are not publicly traded. Our policyholders are members. This allows us to focus on the long-term interest of all our customers. Instead of prioritizing share prices and investors’ profits, we’re able to take a more wellrounded approach, retaining earnings, strengthening our balance sheet, and supporting important local causes wherever we have a presence. Employee Benefits This report is provided, not out of any legal mandate, but because we feel a duty to live up to the expectations of our member-customers, our associates, and our communities. At Sentry, we have a 360-degree approach to keeping insurance costs low. Our priority is making workplaces safer. We offer extensive programs and support that help reduce the frequency and severity of claims. This allows us to control costs while limiting downtime and other indirect but serious impacts on customer business operations. Sentry offers a full spectrum of business life and annuity programs, including 401(k) and other retirement plans. Other employee benefits include group life insurance, dental insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, and term life. Safety and Prevention Standard Business Products Over the years, Sentry has developed deep experience in addressing the insurance and benefits programs for a variety of industries through direct writers. These include hardware, metalworking, manufacturing plastics, rubber goods, printing, electronic component manufacturing, hard goods wholesaling, and food processing businesses. In some markets, Sentry addresses the needs of “Main Street” businesses through independent agents. Together with Sentry Insight, DriveCam® demonstrates Sentry’s 360-degree approach to enhancing safety and reducing claims—two goals that benefit everyone. Cutting-Edge Telematics Go Beyond Accident Investigation Enhancing Safety by Improving Driver Behavior Lytx DriveCam is a video-based driver safety program Sentry began offering in mid-2014. An in-cab device continuously collects data through embedded sensors and dual video cameras. Most of the time, no data is stored. If a triggering event occurs, however, data and video from the critical seconds before and afterwards are saved and uploaded to an online management tool. Why DriveCam? A Careful Choice Organizations using it have found the Lytx DriveCam™ program has: • Reduced cost of accidents by up to 80% • Reduced fuel costs by up to 12% Today, Sentry safety consultants work closely with Lytx to enhance the program and its benefits to customers. Source: Lytx internal statistics aggregating results from more than 1,300 fleet clients, hundreds of thousands of drivers, and billions of miles of driving since 1998. Monitor Fleet Performance A POWERFUL COACHING TOOL In addition to a collision, a triggering event could be hard braking, sudden acceleration, swerving, excessive speed, or other actions identifying potentially unsafe driving patterns. The DriveCam program lets managers coach drivers, changing bad habits while incentivizing positive behavior. The system also provides drivers with real-time feedback that helps them become better driving professionals. A web-based component of the DriveCam program provides fleet managers access to important risk management information. The DriveCam program allows Sentry safety consultants and clients to focus on specific areas that can be improved. “After an initial expense upfront, clients typically see fewer and lower costs later,” says Dan Grant, director of safety services – Transportation. “DriveCam can keep trucks on the roads and drivers on the job by reducing accidents and fraudulent claims. Everybody wins.” Repeat and Enhance “WE PROVIDE CUSTOMERS A DRIVECAM SUBSIDY SO THEY REALIZE AN IMMEDIATE TANGIBLE BENEFIT AND, IN TURN, LONGTERM REDUCED LOSSES.” RICK WITTMANN, SENTRY INSURANCE VICE PRESIDENT – TRANSPORTATION Improve Driving Behavior One camera faces out the front of the vehicle, the other is trained on the driver. We return this year to find out how they rebuilt. “It’s a Good Store, Good People” A Powerful Storm–a More Powerful Promise Dealership Quickly Recovers from EF4 Tornado When Barry Grossenburg drove away from his John Deere dealership the afternoon of October 4, 2013, he had no inkling that he’d return just hours later to find it destroyed by an EF4 tornado. Luckily, nobody at the Wayne, Nebraska dealership was seriously injured. And wisely, Barry had purchased insurance from Sentry—the largest writer of John Deere dealerships nationwide. On a Sunday, two days after the storm passed, authorities deemed it safe for Barry to survey the destruction. Sentry general adjuster Tim Romero was there, having canceled a planned vacation with his wife. Within hours, Romero issued Barry a check to rent a temporary facility nearby. Barry’s policy included 12 months of lost income insurance. In the days and weeks to come, it helped get his business—parts, sales, and service—back up and running. “TIM GAVE US GREAT ADVICE. WHAT HE SAID, WE DID. HE WAS A PRO.” BARRY GROSSENBURG, OWNER OF THE JOHN DEERE DEALERSHIP, REGARDING SENTRY’S GENERAL ADJUSTER Proactive Claims Handling When general adjuster Tim Romero witnessed the destruction for himself, he had a heart-to-heart with Barry Grossenburg and his team to gain an understanding of their needs. He went over their policy benefits and explained the claims process. Mark Zabel, Grossenburg’s account manager, had done a great job of getting them the proper coverages, Romero said. “When you do that, it gives me as an adjuster a lot to work with.” Looking back, Barry Grossenburg said his initial reaction when he first got word of the devastating storm was relief: None of his employees were badly injured. “We just bought this dealership 18 months ago,” he said. “It’s a good store, good people. If you can fix it with money, that’s fine. But if we would have lost people, that probably would have taken the heart and enthusiasm out of us.” Before: A tornado destroyed Grossenburg Implement, resulting in a $19 million loss—the largest claim Sentry Insurance has paid out in the company’s 111-year history. By October of 2014 – less than a year after the tornado struck – Barry moved his operations into the bigger, better, brand-new Wayne dealership. He and his staff threw a grand reopening party on January 8, 2015. Sentry, which stood behind Grossenburg as it does all its dealerships, was there. Not only had Sentry ensured that Grossenburg’s 25 employees would continue to have their livelihood, it saw to it that the dealership would be better positioned to serve its customers. Two other implement dealerships in Wayne also were damaged by the storm, one as badly as Grossenburg. Neither were insured by Sentry and both took longer to recover, Barry said. We know the business. We know the dealers. We keep our promises. Even on a Sunday. After: At the grand reopening party, Sentry was there. Pictured are (left to right): Tim Kelly, Bill Ferro, Adam Severson, Charlie Grossenburg, Barry Grossenburg, Dave Hartman, and Mark Trautschold In the wake of the storm, Romero ensured there was a timely plan of action in place. Debris was removed. Inventory was taken. Equipment was appraised. Damage was assessed. Demolition soon followed. “The faster we can cut checks, the better off the insured is going to be,” he said. “In less than 40 days, we had this loss buttoned down to the point where we had already paid out $13 million.” 13 EXPANDING WITHIN AREAS OF EXPERTISE ROUNDING OUT OUR CUSTOMER BASE 2014 began with Sentry’s first acquisition in eight years. It is the story of expanding the right way, at the right time, with the right opportunity—for everyone involved. From Managing General Agency to Model for Growth An MGA does almost everything an insurance company does, except keep the risk and sell the product. They underwrite the paper, pay claims, and administer the policies of the insurance company. They work with independent agents who sell the policies. An Ideal Match In mid-January of 2014, Montgomery, Alabama’s Anchor Managing General Agency reached out to Sentry because their previous source of insurance product had changed market direction. Sentry was interested in acquiring an MGA, so just six weeks later, Anchor became part of Sentry. The speed of the transaction is a counterpoint to Sentry’s long-term strategy for slow, measured growth. When Sentry acquired Anchor, its status as an MGA ended because it became part of an insurance company. The distribution channel, however, remained essentially the same, with virtually every employee—and their crucial relationships with over 350 independent agents—retained. “Sentry gained a strong, mature distribution network with access to new markets,” says Weishan. “After proving in recent years that we can grow organically, ourselves, without acquisitions—now we are leveraging our business expertise to develop new markets.” Anchor provided commercial insurance products similar to Sentry’s Standard Business Products division, but instead of targeting specific businesses like Standard Business Products does, Anchor’s independent agents served a more general, “Main Street, USA” market. “In order for any company to remain viable and stay current in technology, products, and pricing, you have to grow,” continues Weishan, “This acquisition shows that Sentry is willing to invest in the future to provide this kind of vitality, which benefits our existing customers in the form of better products, better technology, and a financially stronger company. We’re a company that is growing, learning, and enhancing its strength, and that benefits all of our customers.” This opportunity allows Sentry to grow into new markets while still focusing on our commercial insurance product expertise. “It’s an important new way to access a whole new level of commercial business,” says Jim Weishan, Sentry Insurance executive vice president and chief investment officer. “IN SENTRY ANCHOR HAS SELECTED A PARTNER WHO CAN BEST ALIGN WITH THEIR VALUES AND COMMITMENT TO PROVIDING A STABLE MARKET FOR THEIR AGENTS AND POLICYHOLDERS.” PETE MCPARTLAND, SENTRY CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD, PRESIDENT AND CEO 14 In Less than One Year 1999 2006 2014 John Deere Insurance Viking Anchor Managing General Agency (MGA) Sentry’s new Montgomery associates did $28.5 million in business across two states in a single shortened year. $22.5 MILLION – ALABAMA $6 MILLION – MISSISSIPPI RECENT ACQUISITIONS BY SENTRY INSURANCE SENTRYWORLD REIMAGINED RENEWED FACILITIES HONOR RICH PAST, LOOK TO THE FUTURE Reinventing a Legend After a two-year renovation, the reimagined SentryWorld has reclaimed its place as the state’s premier parkland golf experience. Fresh new event, recreation, and dining facilities also support its original mission as a dynamic community resource. SentryWorld has truly come full circle. Course architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr. returned to oversee the renewal of his original design, working in collaboration with co-project architects Bruce Charlton and Jay Blasi. John Sather of the Arizona-based Swaback Partners led the building renovation, while California-based restaurant architect Jim Smith created a new restaurant called PJ’s – SentryWorld, named after one of Sentry’s founders, P.J. Jacobs. Rebuilding spanned 20 months and involved more than 150 crew members. The reimagined SentryWorld golf course features two new par threes. The remaining holes, including the iconic Flower Hole at number 16, were reconfigured and enhanced. The variety of shots, both in distance and angle, has been increased. Practice facilities have been expanded and upgraded. A Vision Comes to Life SentryWorld opened in the summer of 1982 on Stevens Point’s north side as Wisconsin’s first destination golf course and an accompanying state-of-the-art sports complex. Then president and CEO John Joanis championed development of the course and facilities as more than a corporate asset. He wanted SentryWorld to be engrained into the community’s everyday life. The sports complex is also completely transformed, boasting dramatic changes inside and out— a stunning porte-cochère; new pro shop; first-rate wedding, banquet, and event spaces; and an expansive fieldhouse complete with new indoor tennis and volleyball courts and a revamped indoor golf driving range. There’s even a meeting room available—at no charge—for use by community non-profit organizations. The Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed course quickly became famous for its world-class caliber and stunning signature “Flower Hole.” SentryWorld won Golf Digest’s first-ever Best New Public Course award and secured a ranking in the top 10 courses of Golf Digest’s Wisconsin Best in State category, an accolade earned every year since. In late 2012, however, after years of traffic and Wisconsin weather took their toll, current Sentry chairman of the board, president and CEO Pete McPartland made the decision to close SentryWorld—completely but temporarily—for an ambitious two-year renovation project, which was completed in late 2014. #2 MOST ANTICIPATED COURSE WORLDWIDE GOLF MAGAZINE 2015 #5 WISCONSIN BEST IN STATE GOLF DIGEST 2015-2016 “IT WAS A RENEWAL OF SENTRY’S COMMITMENT BACK TO THE COMMUNITY BECAUSE THIS IS TRULY A PLACE OF OPENNESS AND WELCOMING …A RENEWED POINT OF PRIDE.” JOHN SATHER, SENTRYWORLD BUILDING ARCHITECT 16 17 COMMUNITY GIVING THE CIRCLE OF GIVING ALWAYS GIVES BACK Sentry is committed to improving quality of life in our communities because we all experience the positive energy of making a real difference. Sentry’s support for community doesn’t stop with the United Way. In its first year as a premier sponsor of the Tomahawk Fall Ride in northern Wisconsin, Dairyland Cycle® raised more than $10,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Golfers were offered a chance to be among the first on the course by participating in a number of fundraising events, raising a grand total of $54,325 for local charities. These events benefited several Stevens Pointarea organizations, including United Way of Portage County, Operation Bootstrap, the Humane Society of Portage County, and Ministry Saint Michael’s Foundation. Riders loved the design and the chance to help MDA with their important mission.” Sentry Insurance and Associates Donate More Than $1 Million to United Way More than 93% Made Contributions In 2014, Sentry and its associates donated more than $1 million to local United Way campaigns. In Sentry’s hometown campaign in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, $900,000 was garnered for the United Way of Portage County. Together with a record-setting $192,235 from associates located at Sentry’s field offices throughout the U.S., the total donated by Sentry and its associates topped $1 million for the second year in a row. Each of those years, more than 93% of associates made a United Way contribution. Sentry Insurance Foundation $3.7 million donated in 2014 In pursuit of well-rounded communities, Sentry supports human service, education, arts, and civic organizations through the Sentry Insurance Foundation. Over the past seven years, the foundation has contributed more than $7 million in funds that put laptops in area classrooms. In 2014, the foundation also made a $250,000 donation to Boys & Girls Club of Portage County to sponsor Tech Rooms at two clubs. “OUR CAMPAIGNS KEEP GETTING BETTER AND BETTER, AND MORE FUN.” Special fundraising events at Sentry’s headquarters included a Fall Festival, with music, games, a flash mob, an inflatable obstacle course, silent auctions, special meals, and bake sales.
