Overview
Africa - The world's fastest-growing middle class.
Gain new insights into this promising market and
learn how to build your export business in Africa.
Africa Business Day 2015 will focus on the rising middle class on the continent
and will provide you with the latest insights from both, Swiss and African companies already active in this fast growing market. During keynote speeches as
well as workshops, opportunities that arise out of this growing consumer class
will be explored.
The rising middle class in Africa as a driver of economic growth
More than one of three Africans (about 1.1 billion people) are described as
members of the middle class, acting as an important driver of Africa’s economic growth. This growth, though uneven, is not only a source of hope for
Africa, but also a signal to the rest of the world on the prospects for economic
recovery and renewal, particularly because it has been steady despite the global economic downturn.
This rising middle class brings with it middle class values common outside the
continent: families are smaller and own their own homes; and heads of households have salaried jobs or run their own small businesses.
An increasingly urban population
Today around 65% of all Africans live in urban areas – up from less than 10% in
1950. Since 2000 between 60m and 80m people have been born in or migrated
to cities and within the next 15 years a further 160m will move to or be born in
the countries’ urban centers, a the Standard Bank report says.
COUNTRY DESK
Similar to the 2nd edition of the AFRICA
BUSINESS DAY in 2014, a selection of
African Embassies/Missions will be present
during the whole day in the exhibition area
of the event with a “country desk”.
Africa is the world’s fastest-growing mobile phone market and with 600 million
users already the second biggest user of mobile phones globally, behind Asia.
Shopping malls with wireless-equipped coffee shops show the rise of the African consumer: the Accra Mall in Ghana; The Palms in Lagos, the Morocco Mall
in Casablanca, to name a few.
