MILWAUKEE/NARI Helps Homeowners
Freeze the Effects of Ice Damming
MILWAUKEE, WI – Snow, icicles, and
frost – winter comes with beautiful
scenery and fun activities. But once
there is a slight increase in temperature,
the aspects of winter that people love
most can become damaging and messy.
Ice damming is a common issue
in Wisconsin. How can a homeowner
avoid this threat? Members of the Milwaukee/NARI Home Improvement Council, Inc., celebrating 50 year’s as the
area’s leading home improvement and
remodeling resource, explain the triggers for ice damming and the steps homeowners can take to prevent or reduce its
effects.
degrees, it refreezes. This creates the ice
dam, which continues to expand as it is
fed by the melting snow above it. When
the ice dam gets large enough, the water
becomes backed up behind the ice dam,
remaining a liquid.
A major cause of the roof’s temperature increase is a lack of insulation
and ventilation. “Warm air escapes from
the home and leaks into the attic,” said
Rick Burback, CR, of Burback Builders
in Muskego. The attic becomes significantly warmer than the outside temperature, heating the roof and melting the
snow. In rare instances, the sun can
cause the heat.
What is an ice dam?
An ice dam is a ridge of ice that
forms at the roof’s edge. This build up of
snow and ice prevents water from draining correctly. “The gutters fill up with
ice and snow, and the melting snow has
nowhere to go,” explained Christopher
Wittmann, CR of Callen Construction in
Muskego. “To identify an ice dam, look
for a buildup of ice by the eaves or gutters.”
What damage can it cause?
The standing water on the roof
can leak into the home, which damages
the drywall and insulation. “It may
cause mold, mildew, and discoloration,”
explained Burback. The moisture can
also make a home’s insulation inefficient
and cause odors and serious structural
damage if left unattended. “Discoloration where the wall meets the ceiling
and around chimneys is often a sign of
ice damming,” continued Wittmann.
What is the cause?
Ice damming occurs when there
is snow on the roof, and the temperature
of the highest point is above 32 degrees.
The snow melts and flows down. Once it
hits the area of the roof below 32
How can it be prevented or
managed?
Short-term Measures
A homeowner can remove snow
from the roof, which eliminates one factor of ice damming. “Use a roof rake to
get rid of the snow,” said Wittmann.
“People may also fill a nylon stocking
with salt and put it on the roof.” If water
is leaking into the home, individuals can
make channels through the ice, allowing
the water to drain. This can be accomplished by hosing the roof with tap water.
“Although it may be tempting, people
should not go on the roof and chop the
ice. It can damage the shingles or gutters
and should be left to professionals, from a
safety and knowledge standpoint,” said
Burback.
Long-term Measures
The quick fixes can be effective,
but it’s important to repair the source of
the problem. “Homeowners should contact a qualified professional to inspect
the attic and determine if additional
insulation is necessary. An expert will
also be able to identify if there are ventilation issues,” advised Wittmann. The
ceiling should be air tight, so warm air
cannot flow from the home into the attic.
The attic should also be well ventilated to
keep the space cool.

Improvement Council was chartered in
July 1961, as a Chapter of the National
Home Improvement Council. In May of

Tips to Prepare Homes for Winter Weather
MILWAUKEE, WIS. – With winter
in full swing, it’s essential that
homeowners prepare for the plunging temperatures, snow, and other
seasonal threats. Snow accumulation and winter storms can cause
unexpected problems, such as power
outages, frozen pipes, and more.
Being proactive as the cold and snow
season approaches can reduce
homeowners’ concerns.
Members of the Milwaukee/NARI
Home
Improvement
Council, Inc., celebrating 50 years as
the area’s leading home improvement and remodeling industry
resource, offer tips to keep the home
safe, warm, and efficient during the
winter months.
HOME MAINTENANCE
Clean and inspect the furnace.
Having a professional inspect
heating systems helps to ensure that
a home stays warm and safe. “It’s
important to have your furnace
inspected yearly. Every year it isn’t
tuned up, it loses about three percent
of its efficiency,” said Wayne
Abendschein of 1st Choice Heating
& Cooling, Inc., Waukesha.
Keep the attic well ventilated.
This will reduce the probability of
ice dams, which are caused by
melted snow that refreezes on the
roof’s edge.
Examine the chimney and flue.
Homeowners should have their
chimney and flue inspected before
they use the fireplace. “Chimneys
can be checked year-round. Inspections prevent blockages or chimney
fires, which occur more often than
people think,” said Howard Rowell of
Royal Chimney Service, Inc.,
Milwaukee.
Focus on your windows. To
save money and energy, make sure
heat isn’t escaping. Install storm
windows or cover the windows with
plastic.
SURVIVAL GUIDE
Install
carbon
monoxide
detectors. Carbon monoxide is a
lethal, colorless, odorless gas that is
the natural byproduct of burning
fossil fuels. Carbon monoxide
detectors should be installed on
every level of the home and in the
mechanical room, according to
Abendschein. Test the detectors
frequently.
Trim trees. Cut branches that
are too close to the house or electrical wires. If tree branches are out of
reach, consider contacting a tree or
landscape service.
Prevent frozen pipes. Disconnect garden hoses and shut off and
drain water from pipes leading to
outside faucets.
BGS GLASS SERVICE
For All Your Glass Needs
Prepare an emergency kit.
Plan ahead and have extra batteries,
a flashlight, first aid supplies, extra
medications, and non-perishable
food in case a winter storm leaves
individuals stranded at home or
without power.
Ensure that vent pipes are
clear. “During a winter storm and
after, make sure there is no debris or
snow blocking the vents outside of a
home,” advised Abendschein.
Understand the ins and outs of
the fireplace. It’s essential to
comprehend the proper use of a
fireplace.
“Make sure that the
damper is open before striking a
match to avoid smoke. Also, it’s
helpful to bring the wood inside at
least one day before burning it. This
allows the wood to get to room
temperature and produce more
heat,” explained Rowell.
Make sure snow removal tools
are accessible. Arrange your
garage or shed so the snow blower,
shovels, rock salt, sand, and other
gear are easy to find and ready to
use.
Have useful numbers handy –
plumber, electrician, and others. If
there’s a problem during a winter
storm,
it’s
helpful
to
have
contact
information
readily
available.

Curing the

MILWAUKEE, WIS. –
Bare branches and gray
skies can leave individuals

minor blahs during this
season can use simple
home design strategies to
keep their moods high and
improve their spaces.
Members of the Milwaukee/NARI Home Improvement Council, Inc., celebrating 50 years as the

Custom Fit!
Indoor garden – It’s
dreary outside, so create
an indoor garden to bring
some life into the home.
Many plants purify stale
air and add humidity to a
dry winter space. If you
don’t know what to grow,
try herbs such as basil or
mint.
Patio enclosures and
sunrooms – Patio enclosures and sunrooms let
natural light into the
home, which can help battle the winter blues.
Outdoor retreat – It
may be cool outside, but
there are plenty of ways to
enjoy outdoor spaces. Consider having a gas fire-

place or installing an overhead heater, so
people can enjoy the patio or porch yearround. Add fleece blankets and hot
cocoa to further warm up outdoor areas.
JUST ADD COLOR
Paint color – Paint can add warmth
to a home during the winter months.
Use earth tones – greens, browns, and
yellows – to brighten the different rooms
in a home.
Accessories – Accessories can help
brighten a room. Consider hanging a
mirror opposite a window to open up the
space. Use blinds or curtains instead of
heavy draperies to allow light to filter
into the room. Add some color to the
space with pillows, tablecloths, bedding,
or area rugs.
Hurricane Isaac for HLN and talked about
safety tips mentioned in her book. She
recently covered Hurricane Sandy for
BLOOMBERG TV from their world headquarters in New York City.
Prior to CNN, Schneider worked as the
Weekend Meteorologist/Special Assignment Reporter on WLVI-TV WB56 in
Boston. While in Boston, she also provided
entertainment and lifestyle reporting as a
special assignment reporter. Prior to

a couple of pitch guys

into a cult following
that has swept the Midwest. For over 30 years, self-proclaimed

PATRICIA
KATOPES In 2011, Patricia Katopes
began a new chapter in her
life. Inspired by her love of
all things creative and her
passion for baking, she
decided to pick up the whisk
and start her own business, Patty Cakes
Cupcakes. She held fast to the belief that if
you “Do what you love, do what you're good
at, and allow the rest to fall into place,”
things would turn out for the best.
At an early age, Katopes had the curiosity for learning how to bake. She took
classes as a child and decided that cake
decorating was her favorite. After graduating with a degree in journalism, Katopes
studied two years towards a master's in
fine art from Georgia State University. Her
educational foundation gave her a strong
creative base with which to pursue her passions. Now, she continues to explore her
creativity through her business, providing
LET THE LIGHT IN
Lighting
– Adding lamps or
installing track lighting can bring more
light into a room. It’s also important to
consider the color of the bulbs. Warm
whites give the room an amber glow,
while cooler lights give the room a blue
tone.
Skylights – Skylights allow natural
light to saturate spaces lacking windows, such as hallways, stairways, laundry rooms, or bathrooms.
Solar tubes – At a lower cost than
skylights, solar tubes provide warm
light to a room. It is a 10- to 14-inch
diameter sheet metal tube with an interior that acts like a mirror. It captures
daylight at the roof and distributes light
to a home’s interior.
Windows and doors – If there is
enough wall space, think about
installing new windows to let daylight
into the home. Homeowners can also
replace smaller windows for a bay or
bow window. Consider replacing a solid
exterior door with a partial-glass door.
top-quality cupcakes and a sense of community to sweet-toothed customers all over
Atlanta.
On a whim, Katopes wanted to test her
skills against the best in the business. She
auditioned for “Cupcake Wars” in January
of 2012 and was accepted for Season 6.
After battling against more experienced
bakers, all of which were judged by a panel
of experts, Katopes was declared the winner of The Food Network's “Cupcake
Wars.” As the winner of the competition,
Katopes received $10,000 along with showcasing her winning creations at the
Wildaid black-tie gala held in San Francisco in May 2012.
Katopes is also hoping to compete in the
upcoming season of “Cupcake Champions,” which pits 16 “Cupcake Wars” winners against each other for a chance to be
named the Ultimate Cupcake Champion.
The winner will receive $50,000 and showcase his or her creations at a high-profile
event.

LIS
FRIEMOTH Best known as “The Garden Hoe,” Friemoth has
been passionate about and
gaining
knowledge
of
plants since childhood.
According to Friemoth,
she's been “rolling in the dirt since she was
six months old.” She fondly recalls her formative years spent in the home garden
planting, growing, and maintaining lots of
flowers, fruits, and vegetables.
Her interest in the business side of life
originally led Friemoth to the University
of Wisconsin - Whitewater, where science
lured her away, resulting in a Bachelor's of
Science degree. She then pursued and
achieved a Master's degree in Urban Planning from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee's School of Architecture and
Urban Planning.
Friemoth's love of healthy plants, her
science background, and the alluring smell
of wet dirt led her on a plant disease quest
to expand her knowledge, understanding,
and expertise. That quest resulted in a
desire to work in the discipline she knows
and loves, took her out from behind a desk
in corporate research, and put her behind
a shovel. More than 10 years ago, she
applied that burgeoning knowledge and
expertise into the community service field
as a county horticulturist. She then took
her love of healthy plants, the lure of science, the pleasant challenges of analysis,
and the risk of business, and put them all
together to create and launch her own
endeavor - The Garden Hoe.
