GTL & Ethane Cracker Announcements
On December 3, 2012, Sasol announced that we will proceed with
front-end engineering and design (FEED) phase for the integrated,
96000bbl/d gas-to-liquids (GTL) facility and world-scale ethane
cracker with downstream derivatives at the Lake Charles Chemical
Complex.
At a media conference with Louisiana Governor, Bobby Jindal,
Sasol’s chief executive officer, David Constable, said “Sasol is proud
to be driving forward with the next phase of the strategic megaprojects that we have announced today. Through our innovative
energy and chemicals technologies, we will provide the United States
with world-class, cleaner-burning fuel, contribute to the country’s
energy security, boost downstream manufacturing capacity, and
diversify the utilization of domestic gas resources.”
Governor Jindal said, “Today is a great day for Westlake,
Calcasieu Parish and our entire state. Today’s announcement is
not only one of the most exciting announcements in the history
of Southwest Louisiana, but one of the most significant economic
development wins our state – and our nation – has ever recorded.
Sasol is one of many energy companies that is expanding in Louisiana
because of our world class energy infrastructure, strong business
climate, and incomparable workforce. This project will be the largest
single manufacturing investment in the history of Louisiana and it also
represents one of the largest foreign direct investment manufacturing
projects in the history of the entire United States. Despite a national
economic downturn, this historic economic development win is
happening in Louisiana because we have been laser focused on job
creation by creating an environment where businesses want to invest
and create jobs for our people.”
The GTL facility, the first of its kind in the U.S, will produce
four million tons per annum (mtpa), or 96000bbl/d of high quality
transportation fuel, including GTL diesel and other value-adding
chemical products.
Current project costs for the GTL facility are estimated between
US$11 billion and US$14 billion. The GTL project will be delivered in
two phases, with each phase comprising 48000bbl/d. The first phase
is planned to come into operation in the 2018 calendar year and the
second phase the following calendar year.
The world-scale ethane cracker will allow Sasol to expand its
differentiated ethylene derivatives business in the U.S. The cracker
will also benefit from the current low U.S. natural gas prices and the
abundance of ethane.
Current cracker project costs are estimated between US$5 billion
and US$7 billion. Sasol expects beneficial operation to be achieved
during the 2017 calendar year. It will produce an estimated 1,5 mtpa
of ethylene with downstream derivative plants. Sasol also has a
differentiated portfolio of ethylene-based technologies that will enable
it to meet growing demand for high value-add chemicals.
The integrated GTL and ethane cracker projects will, together,
create a minimum of 1200 permanent positions, 7000 construction
jobs at peak and thousands of indirect jobs both in Louisiana and in
the rest of the U.S.
Q&A on the GTL & Ethane
Cracker Announcements
Q. How long will it take to build these facilities?
A. While the construction schedule will be developed during
front-end engineering and design (FEED) these facilities typically
take approximately three to five years to construct after the final
investment decision, which is typical for projects of this size.
While the timing of the final investment decision will impact the final
operational dates of the GTL facility, it is anticipated the first phase
will come online in the 2018 calendar year and the second phase the
following calendar year.
Based on the timing of the final investment decision, we expect
beneficial operation of the cracker to be achieved during the 2017
calendar year.
Q. How many jobs will a Cracker and GTL facility create?
A. A four million tons per annum GTL facility and a world-scale
cracker facility could cumulatively expected to provide:
Approximately 7000 construction site jobs at peak construction, with
the construction phase spanning approximately five years. The exact
number of construction jobs will also depend on the final contracting
strategy that will be followed.
It is anticipated that a minimum of 1200 permanent, full-time
jobs will be created at the Lake Charles integrated GTL and cracker
complex.
It is furthermore expected that thousands of indirect jobs will be
created as result in Louisiana and the U.S. generally.
Q. What types of jobs will be available?
A. Job opportunities will be similar as those with any large
industrial complex. Possible positions include: engineers, chemists,
process operators, laboratory analysts, machinists, electricians,
instrumentation technicians and many other support positions such
as accountants, safety and environmental professionals and more.
Q. What are the requirements for these jobs?
A. Requirements are different for each position, but generally the
professional positions require bachelor’s degrees as a minimum and
the technical positions require associate’s degrees or certifications.
Experience is preferred, but may or may not be required based on
the level of the position.
Q. How do people get more information about the positions and
how to apply?

Q. Does Sasol have the capacity for these large projects?
A. Yes, Sasol continues to prudently manage its existing businesses,
as well as pursue international growth opportunities to support its
long-term strategy.
Sasol’s Lake Charles GTL and cracker complex could unlock
significant value for its shareholders and the communities where
these facilities are located. Sasol continues to review the relevant
requirements and manage its capital and human resources to
maximize the benefits to all.
LAIA Chem Expo 2012
Sasol Volunteers recently participated in the annual LAIA Chem Expo at the Lake Charles Civic Center where more than 2800 sixth grade
students learned about basic chemistry from area industry representatives. Many thanks to our Sasol Volunteers, Vinton High Students and

Health Fair
The annual Health Fairs were
held in November in both Houston and
Lake Charles. The fairs were filled with
valuable information from our benefit
partners, including CHRISTUS St.
Patrick, Cigna, Sun Life and Business
Health Partners. Employees were able
to receive their annual flu shots, blood
pressure monitoring and test lipid and glucose levels. Thank you for
being proactive about your health!
Heart Walk 2012
On November 10, Sasol Volunteers
at the Lake Charles Chemical Complex
participated in the American Heart
Association’s Heart Walk held at
McNeese State University. Sasol and the
team donated $1,600 to help fight stroke
and heart disease in our community.
Special thanks to this year’s Sasol Heart Walk Chairperson, Greg
Hill (R&D). Because of his personal experience with heart disease,
in the loss of his father, Greg was able to tell his story to others and
double the team donation from the previous year!
El Tour de Tucson
El Tour de Tucson is an
annual event in November
benefitting state and local
charities. Professional and
amateur cyclists from all over
the world participate in rides of
111, 85, 60 and 42 miles. This
year more than 9,000 cyclists
competed including Sasol CERALOX employees: Russell Ackerman,
Mark Bellas, Mark Chamberlin and Jim Hackett. The group raised
$2,500 for Arizona Parkinson Disease and Tu Nidito Children and
Family Services. If you would like to participate in next year’s El Tour
deTucson, reach out to Debbie Oetken at the Tucson facility.
Tucson Receives Safety Award
Sasol Tucson hosted a celebratory
lunch on November 8, in honor of the
Safety Performance Recognition award
for zero recordable cases in two years.
Mike Thomas, Vice President of US
Operations, was pleased to present the
award to Jim Hackett, Tucson Plant
Manager, and the employees.
Employee Spotlight
This quarter we are spotlighting
Del House. Del has been with the company for
more than 22 years and has held a variety of
positions. He is currently the Financial Manager,
U.S. Mega Projects. He began his career in
May of 1989 at Vista Chemical Company as an
Internal Auditor. Del then moved to the position
of Business Analyst; from analyst, he was named Audit Manager
and was responsible for all Condea Vista audits. In 2004, he was
promoted to Sasol Treasury & Credit Manager where his team
along with the Marketing group, continually maintained world-class
collections. In his present position as Cost Controller, New Business
Development, he is responsible for managing finances for the Gas to
Liquids project and Lake Charles Cracker projects.
Because of his hard work and dedication, Del has steadily moved
up within the organization and also received the Sasol O&S MD
Award in 2009 for his work to successfully manage Sasol’s product
sales to Georgia Gulf.
In his spare time, Del served as a head coach in the Katy Youth
Football program for 13 years and as the girls fast pitch softball
coach in the Katy Girls Softball Association (KGSA) for 17 years. He
also held the position of KGSA President. When he is not coaching
or volunteering, Del enjoys being outdoors and watching college and
pro football – especially when the Texans, Longhorns or Cougars are
playing!
Del has been married for 28 years to MaryLee House, and they
have three daughters: Ashley (24), Hailey (21) and Melanie (14).

United Way & Sasol…Living United!
Sasol employees in Lake Charles and Houston continue to
support the United Way, which strives to help the people of our
communities by assessing human needs and providing appropriate
services. The 2012 Sasol United Way campaign was a huge
success employee donations totaling more than $130,000. In
addition to employee giving, we have a number of special activities
to raise funds and awareness for the many worthwhile programs
made possible by the United Ways in our areas. Some of those
activities are:
Furniture Auction
Houston employees purchased filing cabinets, storage shelves,
desks, hanging pictures and other office furniture to help raise
money for the United Way. Thanks to their efforts, they collected
$2,100!
Gumbo Cook-off
The Lake Charles Chemical
Complex recently held their
annual United Way Gumbo
Cook-off. A total of 10 teams
participated and began cooking
their masterpieces at 6:30 in the
morning. There were a variety
of chicken and sausage gumbos
and seafood gumbos filled with
hearty ingredients including
shrimp, crab claws and oysters. Congratulations to the Maintenance
team: Dan Conrad and Brad Morgan. United Way team members
sold more than 350 bowls of gumbo and presented a check to the
United Way for $2,100 and part of our total $181,891 campaign
donation. Thanks to everyone for participating and eatin’!

5S Volunteers
Q: What is 5S? A. Sasol Second Saturday
Science Show at the Children’s Museum
Rebecca Sanders (R&D) and

demonstrations on the five senses to children
and their parents at the Children’s Museum.

to get kids interested in science and is also

Sasol Supports Lamar
Sasol North America presented a $15,000 check to
Lamar University for renovations to their Unit Operations
Laboratory in the Dan F. Smith Department of Chemical
Engineering. David Mullenix (Engineering) a 1986 Lamar
graduate, stated, “We’re glad to make this donation to
Lamar because working in the Unit Operations Laboratory
is one of the key things to make students successful when

Speak Up 900! Toastmasters Club
Linda Whitener (Finance) is a long time member of Toastmasters International who has
earned her Distinguished Toastmaster award, the organization’s highest honor. Toastmasters is
an international organization dedicated to communication and leadership development through
learn-by-doing meetings where participants hone their speaking and leadership skills. Through her wonderful experience with Toastmasters, Linda worked with Sasol North
America to charter a Toastmasters club at the Houston office. The group also includes
members from other companies located in the building. Members meet twice each month and
can earn various certifications as they progress in their skills. To learn more about the new

Employee Announcements
Wayne Goke (Safety) welcomed a
new grandson, Kyle Reese Miller. Kyle
was born on September 25, 2012 at
5:34pm and weighed 6 pounds 6 ounces
and was 19 inches long.
Wayne also
welcomes a daughterin-law. Karl Goke and Karen Silvers
were married in Oklahoma City on
October 20, 2012. Karl is a Tech Sergeant in the Air
Force stationed at Tinker AF Base and Karen is an
accountant in Oklahoma City. The couple resides in
Moore, Oklahoma.
Congratulations to Brittany Rigmaiden, daughter of
Sean Rigmaiden (Steam), on her recent graduation
from Sam Houston State. Brittany received a
Bachelor’s of Business Administration with a minor
in Management and is currently working in the
management program with Sherwin Williams.
Maddie Coyle, daughter of Matthew Coyle
(Maintenance), was selected for Louisiana
State University’s “Golden Band from Tigerland”
Colorguard for the 2012 marching season.
Maddie is a freshman at LSU.
Katie Lavin, daughter of Andy Lavin
(Maintenance), was recently inducted into the

Junior Beta Club at the Moss Bluff Middle School.
The Beta Club mission is to promote the ideals
of academic achievement, character, service and
leadership among elementary and secondary
school students. At Moss Bluff, students are
required to maintain a 3.4 grade point average and
volunteer in the community. Congrats, Katie!
Jim Hackett (Tucson) and his children,
Kelly and Patrick, ran in the Turkey Trot on
Thanksgiving Day in Tucson. The Turkey Trot
is an annual 5K race benefitting Toys for Tots.
Patrick is a high school track and cross country
athlete and convinced his family to participate in
the race the past three years. Pictured are Patrick
and Kelly Hackett.
Robert Spencer, son of David Spencer (Alcohol), recently
graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch School of
Health Professions with a Master’s degree in
Physician Assistant Studies. He also passed
his national certification board exam and is
now a Certified Physician Assistant (PA).
Also, Paige Spencer, PhD., David’s daughter
in law, recently completed her doctorate
in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Texas
Medical Branch Graduate School of Biomedical Science.

Innovation Team of the Year
Ultra High Purity Alumina Team (UHPA), Sasol O&S
Use of energy-efficient alternatives to incandescent lights is growing
rapidly, particularly for LEDs, which are manufactured using a
substrate of sapphire made
from UHPA. Sasol O&S’
participation in this market
was capped by the Tucson
plant’s limitations. After an
intensive research and test
phase, the team successfully
developed a new process to
be able to produce UHPA at existing O&S high-purity alumina facilities
in Brunsbüttel. The increased demand in the LED market can be met
with UHPA from our alumina on-purpose facilities in Brunsbüttel by
combining it with a reactor to ensure the high-purity of the product.
MD AwarD
James Boudreaux, SHE Lake Charles
James is the full-time facilitator of OTTER, the Lake
Charles Behavioral Based Safety process. He has
been the catalyst in igniting a renewed passion
for employee-led safety involvement through his
effective leadership style, and employee participation
has grown from 10% to almost 50% in three years.
The number of observations has risen from 180 to
470 per month. The OTTER process played a substantial role at the
Lake Charles site achieving an RCR of 0 for both service providers
and Sasol employees for the first time ever.
Customer Focus
Nancy Heuring, IM Houston
Nancy Heuring manages the Service Management
Centre (SMC) for Sasol North America. The
scope of support ranges across diverse geographic locations,
multiple languages, and a time zone span of 13 to 14 hours.
Nancy exemplifies customer service in a complex and demanding
environment, constantly seeking to improve delivery and processes.
She leads by example, inspiring her team to deliver superior service.
Her outstanding contribution to the Sasol Canada project and the setup of user support shows how successfully she takes on and tackles
additional challenges.
Winning with People
Michael Cox, R&D Lake Charles
Michael has been entrusted with several key
strategic initiatives in Sasol O&S over the past
few years, and has demonstrated a persuasive,
diligent, energetic, collaborative, and resultsoriented approach. He initiated the XTL to
O&S program which has been successfully spinning off strategic
initiatives for O&S’ sustainable profitability and the growth leg of our
strategy. With no direct reports, Michael successfully managed to
bring together experts across O&S functions and regions and other
Business Units such as Sasol Technology, to create high performing
teams.
Integrity
K. Lee Matheson, R&D Lake Charles
K. Lee Matheson is recognized as the most
technically astute scientist regarding detergent
products and how our products are used in this
application as well as how these materials are
produced. When SNA was recently asked to
qualify a new ethoxylate with a key customer, Lee was instrumental in
identifying a product that would work well and meet the needs of both
our ETO and alcohol businesses. The surfactant of choice was Novel
1218-7, which had not been used as a feedstock for sulfation before.
Special Surprise for a Special Lunch Buddy Public Awareness
Tony Courville (Chemist) has been actively involved with
Winner
the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) Lunch Buddy program.
Three years ago he was connected with his Little Brother
(”Little”) and since then joins him for lunch once a month at
his elementary school. During this time, the two have become
friends and learned a lot about each other. Tony realized
very quickly that his “Little” is a huge football fan. Recently,
Tony and his wife, Alicia, who is a McNeese State University
Professor, arranged for some football players in her class to come and have lunch with Tony’s
“Little”. When asked about his Lunch Buddy experience, Tony said, “I have seen a positive
change in my “Little” from when we started and I enjoy seeing the smile on his face when we
have lunch. He is doing the right things and headed in the right direction.”
And because of his commitment and genuine compassion for his “Little”, Tony Courville
has been named the 2012 Lunch Buddy of the Year by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest
Louisiana!
A BBBS representative Amy Rogers said, “Tony has gone above and beyond to make his
‘Little’s’ life better each time he meets with him. He is consistent, reliable, dependable, creative,
committed, a friend to the school, and a phenomenal mentor and role model. He is more than
just a positive influence in the life of his ‘Little’; he is a true and genuine friend.”
Congratulations, Tony, and thank you for being such a positive representative of Sasol
North America!

Pipeline brochures are mailed out each year
to residents and businesses within a ½ mile
radius of any Sasol operated pipeline. These
brochures provide useful information about
the safety of pipelines and remind people that
they should always call the Louisiana One
Call number before conducting any digging or
drilling activities on their property. Next year,
when you receive yours, be sure to send in the
return reply card to be entered in a drawing for
another gift card.

Observations Benefitting The
Salvation Army
On December 11, Sasol and contract companies working on the
ECHO-1 projects presented a $15,976 donation to the Salvation
Army’s Christmas Angels. Behaviour Based Safety Facilitator, James
Boudreaux said, “This year’s combined efforts have exceeded
anything that we could have imagined. We completed a record 6,573
observations during the month of November and to show additional
support, many of our contract companies provided company
matching funds.”

Congratulations to the Lake
Charles Finance Team
Congratulations to the Lake Charles Finance team for receiving
the “Financial Recognition Award 2012.” This award recognizes teams
for displaying the Sasol value of “Excellence in All We Do.” The team
performed superiorly during the fiscal year, meeting all deadlines, while
taking on additional work associated with the Tetramerization Project
and the New Business Development projects. The performance of the
team did not falter, even in the face of reduced staffing and changing
roles and responsibilities. The team maintained its world class status
in consistently achieving a two day monthly plant closing while incurring
cash fixed costs less than one tenth of a percent of turnover. With
more than 1,000 employees working in the Finance function for Sasol
worldwide, only 70 received this award and 10 of those were from right
here in Southwest Louisiana. Congratulations to our Finance Team:
