In Loving Memory of our Husband and Father
MORRIS SMITH, SR.
We offer thanksgiving for the love and blessings you brought into our lives. We shall sorely miss your presence.
Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31
1945-2015
Theme: "HONORING OUR LEGACY, RESETTING OUR FUTURE”
“So let’s do it—full of belief, confident that we’re presentable inside and out.
Let’s keep a firm grip on the promises that keep us going. He always keeps his word.
Let’s see how inventive we can be in encouraging love and helping out, not avoiding worshiping
together as some do but spurring each other on, especially as we see the big Day approaching.”
Hebrews 10:22-25 (THE MESSAGE)

INTENTIONAL FAITH DEVELOPMENT
If you abide in me,
and my words abide in you,
ask for whatever you wish,
and it will be done for you.
My Father is glorified by this,
that you bear much fruit
and become my disciples.
John 15:7-8
HOLMAN FACTOID
In 1992, the Arts Council was organized.
This creative ministry is an example of generating
new ways to embed the spirit of the living God in
all walks of life. The annual African American Quilt
Exhibit, Youth Recital, Patio Art Exhibit, as well as
museum visits and other events and activities help
achieve a goal of viewing and presenting art as an
expression of our spirituality.
LET US PRAY FOR THE BEREAVED
Congregations who practice Intentional Faith
Development offer opportunities for people to
learn in community for people at all stages
of faith. They offer ministries that help people
grow in grace and in the knowledge and
love of God. Through the personal practice of
Intentional Faith Development, we do the soul
work that connects us to others, immerses us
in God’s Word, and positions us to grow in
grace and mature in Christ.
We place
ourselves
in
the
most
advantageous
circumstances to learn and grow in our
following of Christ. We cooperate with the Holy
Spirit in our own spiritual maturation.

Our Storehouse Ministry is our
outreach opportunity to serve
persons in our community who

monetary contributions allowed us in AUGUST, 2015
to provide food to 551 persons – that’s 206 women,
163 men, and 182 children. We thank you for sharing
your blessings and making this outreach possible.
They share freely and give generously to the poor. Their good
deeds will be remembered forever. 2 Corinthians 9:9.
WE ARE BLESSED TO BE A BLESSING!

Scripture: Acts 4:32-5:11
The Bible lists 7 things that anger God the most,
and one of them is lying (Proverbs 6:16-19).
The lesson will help children understand why lying
is wrong. It may be possible to deceive another
person, but God is never fooled.

FAITH FORMATION AT HOLMAN
Faith formation is the process of being discipled
in Jesus Christ. Christian discipleship must be a way
of life, a life of service to God and God's people.
It is not something that only happens on Sunday

but must be lived each day wherever we may be.

FAITH FORMATION IN ACTION
We have many opportunities for service and
participation in our Congregational Care Ministries (i.e.
Bereavement, Communion Visitation Team) and Circle of

For more information on all
Congregational Care Ministries please contact Minister
Marguerite Phillips at the church office 323-731-7285 or

The situation is this: thousands of people have risen in the
last year to demand that the police stop their wanton and
repeated killings of Black and Latino people. But the
police, backed up from on high, have continued this
onslaught and lashed back harder. This is a plague, this
is the spearpoint of a genocide. Yet way too many people
still sit on the sidelines. In the face of this, Rise Up
October has called for militant and mass mobilization on
October 22 to 24, focused in New York City, to STOP this.
These actions aim to mobilize many more thousands of
people, from all walks of life, much more actively into this
fight, to powerfully insist through their actions on those
days that these murders must simply stop, NOW.
Such an unprecedented outpouring of protest and
resistance, along with the whole process of building up to
these days, would awaken and inspire millions, and
sharply raise the question to the whole society and the
whole world – WHICH SIDE ARE YOU ON? The aim is to
get things to the point where there are millions who both
feel in their bones that this system of intimidation, terror
and murder is INTOLERABLE… and are willing to step out
and act in all different ways to stop this, and have the
ways to do so. In other words, these actions in October
aim to change the whole tenor and direction of society.
That is what we are calling for. And that is worth going allin on.
Join us in making this historic event as powerful
as it needs to be, and can be. Which side are you on?
 “A MATTER OF BALANCE” CONTINUES:
SEPTEMBER 25 & OCTOBER 2 TO NOVEMBER
6th – (7 more Fridays) – A Matter of Balance by
Partners in Care; 10 am – 12 noon in the Crockett
Library. You can still join the session at this 2nd
week only. Registration is closed after 9/25/15.
 AARP TECH TRAINING — OCTOBER 21st,
9 am to 5 pm – AARP & Holman partner in a
community technology training for seniors who are
Holman members and seniors from the community.
Please save this date & time. More details to
follow.
And in the end, it's not the years
in your life that count.
It's the life in your years.
