Smith & Son Email: tiser@ghsmith.com http://www.ghsmith.com The Printers Market Place Easingwold York YO61 3AB Tel: 01347 821329 Fax: 01347 822576 Saturday, 29th September, 2007 No. 6,469 ISSN 1749-5962 10p Easingwold WI September 2007 After being welcomed by our President Jenny Nesbit, last month’s minutes were read and approved. We were reminded of future events, especially our Autumn Council Meeting to be held at the end of October at Easingwold School. This will be the last chance to hand in any used bras, which members and friends have collected. Some of the money generated by the sale of said bras will go towards keeping our North Yorkshire Air Ambulance in the air. Anyone who would like to submit two photos with the “water” must do so by the end of January 2008. Those chosen will be included in the 2009 WI Calendar. Maria Dewers, Duty Manager of the York Theatre Royal was our September speaker. She was born in Easingwold and has been on the stage since she was ten. Her interesting talk was about the history and workings of the York theatre. The founder was Thomas Kerrigan who in 1744 had the theatre built on the site of a ‘real’ tennis court. We were shown slides throughout the talk, including the back entrance, which in Victorian times was the way in for people with gallery seats. A separate entrance was for those who had bought more expensive seats. There were no seats in the pit, now called the stalls – you had to stand! The reason why boxes don’t face the stage is that the occupants were there to be seen. Maria commented on the nautical terms used by theatre folk, for instance the stage is called the deck etc. She detailed the progress of the first reading of a play or show, until the time it was shown to the public. Often full dress rehearsal was only performed a couple of days before the first public performance. York Theatre is not a touring one, nor does it have a repertory company now. Maria finished her talk with a couple of stories about the theatre ghost. We were enthralled and Audrey Clark gave her a warm vote of thanks. Our hostesses were Della Cosgrove and Andrea Jackson. It was ‘nip and tuck’ in the early stages and both sides missed good chances. Huby with pace up front were causing the Town a lot of problems and D Block was twice called upon to save close range efforts. J Banks twice should have done better, first with a close range header and then a right foot effort from eight yards. On a good playing surface the Town were struggling to play to feet but surprisingly the game was goalless at half time. The home side were on top in the early stages of the second half and deservedly went ahead and could so easily have had a second but D Block again saved well. Towards the end the Town had their best spell of the game but the final ball into the box was poor and after M Smith and D Copeland had both missed good chances the latter made amends 15 seconds from the end when he scored from close range. In extra time the Town looked the more likely to win and M Smith missed a simple chance to put the visitors ahead. With two minutes left the Town looked to have won the game D Copeland again scoring but unbelievably with five seconds left Huby equalised. The home side took five excellent penalties, C Didlick being the Town player to miss, Huby going through to the third round of the Reserve League Cup. Easingwold is one of the few towns left where the motor vehicle, the pedestrian, the cyclist and the architecture have been allowed to reach a state of natural balance without the need for a clutter of signs and yellow paint. On the whole it works well. I know there is limited parking, but Easingwold is a town where most of the residents live sufficiently near to the centre to have no need to use their cars. Let’s hope that the lack of funds at least delays this until the debate can be opened up again. A lot of new residents have moved into the area since the public consultation took place and they may not be aware of what is to be inflicted on the town. Is it too late now to make one last attempt to prevent this desecration? McIntosh attends Party Conference in Blackpool Miss Anne McIntosh, MP for the Vale of York, and Parliamentary Spokesman for Thirsk and Malton, will be attending the Conservative Party Conference in October. Miss McIntosh will be attending a range of meetings and events, representing the Vale of York as MP and the new Constituency of Thirsk and Malton as Parliamentary spokesman, and will be taking part in two fringe events as Shadow Minister for Floods. Miss McIntosh said: “The Conservative Party Conference is set to be very exciting and upbeat this year. I expect the atmosphere to be lively and positive with the opportunity as David Cameron as Leader to set out our Conservative vision for government. “The Conference week will provide a showcase for the discussion of key issues, including the current direction of the Party, as well as various Policy Group recommendations. I look forward to the focus being on the new Blue Green agenda and in particular, climate change, education and law and order. I will also be participating in two fringe events – one regarding the recent summer floods and the other discussing the importance of the water sector.” Turton Makes Certain for Huby Reserves Huby Utd Res 2 Easingwold Town Res 2 AET Huby Win 5-3 on penalties Man of the Match Jimmy Turton wreaked havoc in Easingwold’s Town with his searing pace. Signed in the close season, Jimmy is already striking up a promising partnership with fellow striker Scott Dixon. He should have put Huby one up early in the first half when he outstripped the Town’s defence, only to shoot weakly at the keeper. Huby continued to have the better chances in the first half, with Dixon, Dave Brogan and Richard Webster going close. Town’s keeper proved formidable though with a string of fine saves. Utd Res went ahead early in the second half, when Brogan fed Turton and he drove home his shot. Easingwold then turned up the heat, pushing three men in attack, and really put Utd’s defence under the cosh. It was Huby’s keeper Glen Robinson’s turn to prove what a fine keeper he is developing into by pulling off several one on one saves. The game was very exciting at this point but Huby were holding out thanks to Player Manager Martin Gilmour’s leadership at the back. Imagine their despair, though, when with 15 seconds left Easingwold Res levelled the match. The lads did not let it get them down for too long and they should have won the game in extra time but again they were thwarted by the Town when they took the lead with three minutes to go. Huby’s head went down at this point but they rallied and when Simon Dodsworth’s shot was parried by the keeper, Brogan was on hand to equalise. The penalty shoot out proved exciting as well, with players on both sides taking their kicks with aplomb. It was unfortunate for Town that one of their players missed the target altogether and Huby moved into the third round, after a very sporting contest, which could have gone either way. We began with a short AGM. The past season had enjoyed a very good variety of stimulating meetings and visits, and we were given a promising list of the programme planned for the coming year. Finances are in a healthy position, so there is no need for any increase in subscriptions. Committee members were acknowledged for their efforts, although two replacements would be needed for the coming year. Extra members will be very welcome. We then turned to the main purpose of the evening, which was an illustrated talk by Garry Gaunt from Stokesley (and closely involved with Helmsley Walled Garden) on the top of ‘Clematis and its Uses’. His interest in clematis began as a ‘small retirement pastime’ but had developed into something much more time consuming. He identified three main groups of £700 Now £5,295 MOTABILITY "DEALER GROUP OF THE YEAR" AWARD WINNER 2006 7 Station Road Thirsk, Y07 1PZ polarford.co.uk Cars shown for illustration purposes only. The general public usually went for the long flowering varieties but he considered that these were usually a ‘poor buy’ and he recommended a concentration on the late flowering varieties. Many of these were particularly good for training to climb up trees. Garry also drew attention to some of the herbaceous types which were suitable for growing amongst low growing shrubs. We also received recommendations about buying and planting. We were advised to go for well established plants and to avoid ‘special offers’, which often died off very quickly. After more advice on pests and pruning we were treated to a very colourful slide presentation based on clematis at Helmsley and in Garry’s home garden. Garry was given a warm vote of thanks for a most informative presentation, which has set a very good standard for the remainder of our new season’s programme. Joshua Stojkovic, Nicola Stojkovic, Charlie Norquoy, Isabel Inman Stillington Ladies Hockey Stillington Ladies showed a promising start to the season at the York and District Ladies Hockey League’s rally at the University of York. The team finished in a respectable fourth place, having only conceded one goal all day. With a few new players in the squad the early matches saw four no-score draws in a row, as all the players got used to the new look team. The fourth of which was a rather uncomfortable match against Dunnington, where Stillington clung on for the draw, but was followed by a superb display against Danby, Stillington winning 3–0 with goals by Lucy Tate, Rosie Brian and Diane Clarkson. The last match saw Stillington take on Nestle, lack of fitness so early in the season proved vital as they lost 1–0. On Sunday 30th September, Stillington hold their own rally, sponsored by John Smiths. The first match is to start at 10am. Further to my ‘rise and rise’ article recounting the concerted support I received from primary schools, the Galtres Centre and high school to give girls similar opportunity to play our national game as taken for granted by their boy peers, it is rewarding to see that the high school now have what is arguably the largest and strongest squad of U14s in North Yorkshire, with even the boys reluctantly accepting that ‘girls can play a bit’ after combined Yr7/8 and Yr8/9 teams ‘came from nowhere’ this year to win prestigious County Schools Cups at U13 and U14 level. Highlights were the U14 final being played at Harrogate Town’s Conference League ‘proper ground’, and at the U13 final sixth-former Jan Suchecki being in the right place at the right time to impress county officials with his professional and, more importantly in the circumstances, impartial display as last minute stand-in referee; his immediate reward being an offer of a County FA training opportunity to further his refereeing ambitions. But the real reward is to see Easingwold Town FC now directly contributing to the fastest growing participating sport in Britain, girls football, by joining other clubs in the York area recruiting from the ever growing pool of players at the high school to enter a team in the City of York U14 Girls League. This further ‘rise’ immediately following a recent North Riding County FA ‘club/school link’ initiative where club coaches had the opportunity to assess the youngsters not already registered for other clubs. This welcome link, if conscientiously maintained, should lead to a situation where girls are eventually building their experience at all age levels for both club and high school, and with that situation the possibility of the ultimate ‘rise’: Easingwold Town forming a women’s team. Despite being pleased with the progress to date, it is disappointing that even though my annual Easingwold Primary Reception/Yr1 ‘introduction to the ball’ PE lessons have motivated sufficient numbers of girls to look to improve their ball-skills in the after-school club before reaching the age to play inter-school Mini-soccer, few age 4-6s have joined the boys in Easingwold Town’s Saturday morning ‘preparing for Minisoccer’ group. Therefore, in an attempt to improve this situation, I have decided to relinquish my boys ‘real-game’ ambitions and step back some four years to again coach ‘the little ones’ in the absolute basics of ball control at the Junior Club and resume my role as Easingwold Primary’s girls football skills coach. This restored school/club ‘link’ hopefully leading to more parents overcoming their understandable reluctance to consider football as anything but a male preserve, and, just maybe after the first real TV coverage of the Women’s World Cup in China, give their daughters ‘equal opportunity’ to fulfil their initial football ambitions as they would routinely give their sons. A flat 7 mile course that included part of the old airfield and, due to a long spell of dry weather, the going was quite rough underfoot on the off-road sections. Twelve club members competed and came away with an array of prizes. Nigel Ramsden came 1st in the Male O/40 category as did Peter Johnson and Alf Lindsay in the Male O/50 and Male O/60 categories respectively. Kim Philips was not only first local lady home but also finished 1st in the Female O/45 category with Carol Morrison taking 2nd place as did Sheila Capper in the Female O/40 section. These three ladies together however, won the Female Team prize. Four other club members, Chris and Kim Richardson, Chris Hartley and Cliff Simm were competing on the same day in another race, the Wetherby 10K which was the final round of the Black Sheep Series. Chris Richardson and Cliff had been competing in this series of races throughout the summer and it was down to the last race to determine final positions in the overall events. Well done both Chris and Cliff for finishing 2nd in their respective categories – Chris in the Male O/40 Full Pint series and Cliff in the Male O/70 Half Pint series. Not to be outdone however, Chris Hartley finished the Wetherby 10K in 1st position in the Male O/40 category. Looming on the horizon is the Great North Run on Sunday. As usual, numerous Club members will be travelling to Gateshead to take part in this annual event, some of whom are running to raise money for various charities and others just for the fun of it! A report on the day’s events will follow in the next report. As the 2008 Season has already got underway, various races have already been earmarked for inclusion in the Club Championship. The next event is a 10 mile mixed terrain race over tarmac and tracks around Harewood on Sunday 7 October. The Thursday evening training sessions continue to include the mile time trials, the first of which was completed last week. This week they pulled back from 1-3 down to draw level only for a goal in the last five minutes to defeat them. This was an absorbing match with both teams having periods in control and times when they were on the back foot. Both teams scored when they had been under pressure and the balance of the game was in doubt right until the final whistle. With four players out injured, two more playing with injuries, and another three unavailable, the Easingwold team had to be reshuffled from last week. That’s bound to upset the rhythm and shape but there’s a lot of depth in the squad and the early part of the game saw Easingwold settle down to a very positive performance. Henley and Magill were denied in a scramble at the near post and the home team took the game to Wigginton. After about 20 minutes the visitors began to get on top territorially but were denied by a very solid back four and keeper. Ironically it was after this that Easingwold struck. Clegg, who had an excellent match, played Wilsdon through and his crisp shot into the corner gave the keeper no chance. With a little more incisiveness in the passing, and more thought about the angles of the passes, then more may have come but Wigginton struck back with two goals in five minutes to put them in front at the break. A superb wing-to-wing move almost created an equaliser in a strong start to the second period but Wigginton broke to the other end. Berry came and made the block but the ball ran loose to a player about 25 yards out who hit a half volley screaming into the top corner. Brilliant goal or fluke, it looked good. For a while things looked sticky but fighting spirit came through with two players who had come on as subs pulling Easingwold level. Williamson volleyed home at the back post and then Lawrance stole in to score a fine goal. He tested the keeper again with a rasping cross shot and the finale was evenly balanced. With just a few minutes to go Wigginton scored their fourth with a powerful header but even then the home team nearly got a deserved point with Wilsdon forcing a fine save from the goalie. Some very good stuff in periods and a full 90 minutes of it will see the victories come. Team: J Berry, R Henley, J Brenndorfer, B Stirk, A Rawcliffe, C Magill, J Walker, M Clegg, L Baudouin, G Wilsdon, F Walker, T Williamson, J Lawrance. Churches Together in Easingwold and District Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about a contest he had been asked to judge. The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child. The winner was a fouryear-old child whose next-door neighbour was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman’s garden, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there. When his mother asked him what he had said to the neighbour, the little boy said, ‘Nothing, I just helped him cry.’ Words are important. The right words at the right time can bring healing and comfort; or challenge and stimulate progress. Inappropriate words can cause anger, division or pain. However, sometimes we need the instinctive wisdom of a child that deems words unnecessary. ‘Being there’ for someone is far more important than worrying about whether we say the ‘wrong thing’. The psalmist puts it this way “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer” – a prayer that need not be confined to preachers or public speakers, but could be a daily prayer for us all. First League Game for Girls Easingwold Town’s Girls Under 14s side eventually played their first league game last Saturday, drawing 1-1 with Copmanthorpe. The 11 a side league, which the girls originally registered for, sadly collapsed with not enough teams to warrant a league. However, a 7 a side was set up, which Easingwold duly entered. With an exceptional turn out of 12 girls, coach Mark Sherwood had to rotate his players ensuring all the girls got a taste of competitive football. Easingwold started well, with Emma Cockerill looking dangerous up front for the home side, but they were unable to carve out many clear-cut chances. But after 10 minutes Abi Lunn’s shot found the back of the net to put Easingwold in front at half time. Copmanthorpe looked more dangerous in the second half with Easingwold captain Becky Cattley standing firm in the heart of the home side’s defence. The visitors then grabbed a goal back midway through the half and almost stole all the points but for an excellent save from ‘keeper Sara Cooper who kept the scores level at full time. This was an encouraging performance from the Easingwold girls who go to Wigginton Grasshoppers next week looking for their first win. The World Scout Jamboree 2007 My experience at the jamboree was one of the best, if not THE BEST experience of my life. The entire atmosphere of the jamboree was brilliant, it opened your eyes to the diversity of other cultures. For example if you went to other camps for troop meals, it showed you the food, beliefs and habits of other countries. Our unit in particular had many of these troop exchange meals. I personally went to two other camps to have dinner and stayed behind once to host another contingent. The ones I went to were the Hong Kong and Indonesia camps and we hosted the Japanese camp. At the Hong Kong camp we sampled what sort of food they made using British ingredients and we used traditional methods of eating the food by means of chop sticks and bowls but because we had pork steaks a lot of people caved in and had to use knives to eat the meat. The Indonesian meal was a complete contrast where we had authentic Indonesian food and drink which they cooked themselves from scratch. Also at that dinner were French and Indian scouts. At the jamboree there were many fun filled activities such as SPLASH a water activities day organised and run by the Tholthorpe Villagers, Richard and Clair Adams. This day gave everyone the opportunity to do kayaking, raft building, rowing, bell boating as well as a range of sailing. I personally did kayaking which was a great fun. Other activities were Starburst. A day’s community service. Gilwell adventure which was an adventure activities and information day. Other activities were Aquaville and Terraville which were food, culture and activity tents from every nation at the jamboree. A multitude of other activities were available such as baseball and lacrosse from the American section, a Finnish sauna, an array of games from Turkey and other places. I even tried the Salsa Latin American dancing. The Global development boulevard, Globus centres, Global faiths and beliefs centre, Energise were a small sample of places to go in free-time. It was also great fun to go and meet internationals, meet friends, go badge swapping, go to the plaza or just chill in your sub camp. The main events were the ceremonies and parties, there were three main ceremonies: the opening ceremony, the sunrise ceremony celebrating 100 years of scouting, and the closing ceremony. There were also three main parties: one for all UK participants the day before the internationals arrived, the opening party for everyone and the party for peace on the scouting sunrise day. But the best part of the jamboree was meeting other people from all over the world and also giving and receiving cards so you can keep in contact after the jamboree. The worst part of the jamboree was the fact that it had to end and saying goodbye to all my new foreign friends in the knowledge that we may never meet again. May I take this opportunity to express my appreciation to everyone who contributed in making my Jamboree Experience possible. Compared to our last somewhat strenuous outing on the Moors, this pleasant walk circling Jervaulx Abbey was indeed a dawdle. We parked the cars at East Witton, just past Masham and Jervaulx. This is a pretty little village with a wide green that gave ample opportunities for parking. Paul Walliss had planned this 9 mile hike which was to take us in an anticlockwise loop around Jervaulx Abbey although we did not see the abbey at all. This was a walk of good paths and tracks and generally fairly level. However we had to start the day with a climb up the hill on the south side of the dale to the little village of Ellingstring. On the way up the hill we passed a graveyard without a church. Apparently this was left in place after the church was relocated to East Witton. We also passed Waterloo Farm, named according to the year the farmhouse was built. Near the top of the hill we stopped for coffee in the shelter of a wall. The views from here down into the dale were delightful. After leaving Ellingstring we turned downhill and southward until we reached the River Ure at Kilgram Bridge. This is a well preserved bridge of Norman origin. Interestingly the Romans also crossed the river at this point and the remains of the Roman ford supporting the current bridge have been found by scholars. Our interest was more in the scenery. We looked down over the gently flowing, wide Ure with its wooded banks. Here was a lone fly fisherman in the river in search of trout. We then turned westward up the dale to the quiet, peaceful village of Thornton Steward. This stretch was through pastures with magnificent views towards Penn Hill. On the outskirts of the village we came to St Oswald’s Church which was an ideal spot for lunch and the group photograph. This is reputed to be the oldest church in Wensleydale with the present structure dating back to Norman times. The site has been a place of worship since the 7th century. The last three miles took us back to the river passing Danby Hall. This is a large, well proportioned house that dates back to the 14th century. We recrossed the Ure at Ulshaw Bridge just before crossing the River Cover, using a narrow stone bridge. The last half mile to East Witton was over pasture. This had been another great day’s walking with ideal conditions. Next time we head east to Broxa-CumTroutsdale. Nevertheless, 2007 has once again proved to be a very rewarding one for the club’s most junior team under the sage guidance of coach John Flintoff. Particularly pleasing is the excellent team spirit generated by a blend of youngsters ranging in age from 8 to 12 years, attending several different schools and captained by the League’s only female player. Every one of the sixteen players in the squad made a significant contribution at some stage and the policy of introducing younger players at suitable opportunities provides them with valuable experience as they move up the age range. There were various notable performances during the season not least from Ben Scaling and James Sowerby who both claimed hat-tricks versus Scorton and Hutton Rudby respectively; also Hugo Adams who took five wickets in an innings against Stokesley. Karl Carver completed the season having scored 73 runs without losing his wicket at any stage. Felix Adams, Karl Carver, Charlie McGivern and Jess Watson trialled for junior county teams and all played representative cricket at some level. Ultimately, Felix Adams played for Yorkshire Schools’ U11 team and Jess Watson played for Yorkshire Women’s U13s and U15s. The Night the Fat Lady changed her Tune Sillars Shield Cup Final – Sessay U12 v Northallerton U12 Following comfortable victories in the previous two rounds over Hutton Rudby and Stokesley respectively, Sessay travelled to Thirsk CC seeking revenge over Northallerton, the only team to beat Sessay during the league campaign. A bright balmy late August evening quickly assumed a distinctly chilly feel for the Sessay team and its supporters. Having won the toss and chosen to bat, Sessay’s scoring rate was painfully slow in the face of some accurate bowling from Northallerton. Wickets tumbled as Sessay declined to a truly abysmal 181 for 6 after 12 overs (having started on 200). However, the last pair of captain Jess Watson (11*) and Karl Carver (6*) kept their wickets intact and partially restored the situation to post a merely woeful total of 198. Understandably, the Northallerton camp was conspicuously upbeat at the change of innings. This state of illconcealed confidence had risen further by the end of the 12th over of the Northallerton innings as the score had progressed steadily to 219 with only a couple of minor mishaps. By this stage Sessay’s main strike bowlers had all bowled their maximum quota of overs and failed to make a telling impression on the opposition’s weaker batsmen. James Coatsworth (12*) had caught the eye. The Fat Lady was well beyond the warbling stage. However, with Northallerton’s top batsman facing the music, Jess Watson hit all the right notes (and the stumps) with a wicket maiden. On the boundary, the boys from ‘the capital’ remained buoyant until the next over when Felix Adams claimed two further wickets. The mood music was changing and continued so to do as during the penultimate over the bails flew on no less than three occasions as Jess Watson brought proceedings to a crescendo, effectively sealing a thrilling victory as Northallerton failed to score the 22 runs needed from the last over. The Fat Lady was no longer singing the same tune! Michael Ibbotson with the AA Pub of the Year trophy Since then, they have maintained the ‘village pub’ character which it exudes. Michael Ibbotson explained: “We wanted to be a pub with good food, as opposed to a restaurant with a bar, so we produce simple dishes, using local produce and the best ingredients. “At the same time, we offer somewhere where you can just as easily order a glass of champagne as a pint of beer. While we have significantly enhanced the dining experience, we have also managed to retain the support of local drinkers.” Although the pub’s wine cellar has 100 bins – of which 12 are served by the glass – its range of beers includes two guest ales, which are changed weekly, and the pub is listed in the Campaign for Real Ale Guide. By having two joint head chefs, the pub is able to offer food seven days a week and avoid the ‘chef’s night-off syndrome’. With the assistance of General Richard Preston, new Sales Manager at Polar Ford Thirsk Manager Zoe Slagle and Front of House Manager Johnnie Parkhurst, the Durham Ox has developed a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. Roaring fires in winter and peaceful garden and sun terrace have made it an all-year-round destination and helped it become the success it is today. Peter Birnie, the AA’s Chief Hotel and Restaurant Inspector commented, “We selected The Durham Ox as Pub of the Year because of the obvious commitment which has gone into making this pub a desirable location through its dedication to providing only the best of food, wines and beers. The proper pub food, including traditional dishes such as Welsh rarebit and braised lamb shank, is a refreshing move away from new gastro cuisine, which alongside the beautiful bedrooms, ample venue space and delightful garden prove this to be a pub of extremely high standards”. Easingwold Advertiser and Weekly News, Saturday, 29th September, 2007 Jack Morse 1876 – 1968 Sam Morse of Parkfield, Stillington brought in these memories and photos of his father Jack, whom came to Easingwold from Ludlow when his mother Mrs S Beesley took over the Commercial in the Market Place in the late 19th century. Until retirement, Jack spent his working life on the Easingwold Railway and there is a photo of him taken in 1905 alongside the old ‘Coffee Pot’ as the engine was known at the time. His appearance was always immaculate whether at work or play and his crowning glory were his boots, which were polished to a sheen not seen since. So impressed were Cherry Blossom, the polish manufacturers, that they used him in their advertising and presented him with a large box of their products. In his spare time he acted as MC at local dances and the photo shows him officiating at a dance at Easingwold School in the late 1950s. After retirement he used to help in the office of The Advertiser where his writing was seen as a work of art (see example). Jack and Alice cutting their Golden Wedding cake Easingwold School Show Jumping Team Success! Four girls from Easingwold Secondary School made it to the finals of the prestigious Harrogate Ladies College Team Show Jumping Challenge last Sunday. Livia Gillam, Evie Johnson, and sisters Georgia and Izzy Rae took on 27 other teams of under 15-year-olds in the competition held in the Main Arena at the Yorkshire Showground. Each team competes over two rounds of progressively larger jumps and then the top six teams go head to head in a nail biting jump off. The girls were in second place after the first two rounds and so qualified easily for the final. The scores are then removed and everyone starts afresh for that final all important round. The girls really went for the time in the final, but in doing so had a few more fences down than the other teams. They finished up in sixth place and enjoyed the unexpected thrill of a gallop round the hallowed turf. Captain Georgia Rae said: “We didn’t expect to reach the final of such a competitive event on our first attempt and we intend to go back next year and do even better!”. Jack’s wife Alice was also long lived and died in 1967 at the age of 88. Sam Morse, his youngest son, who brought in this information, is now 92 years old and looks as though he will go on well past his century and is thought to have had a driving licence longer than anyone in the area, his first licence date being May 1930. Mrs S Beesley Sam Morse Burn Hall Hotel Launch Leaves crowds on fire as events team pull out all the stops for a memorable day out Burn Hall Hotel in Huby, York celebrated its official launch with hundreds of guests arriving to mark the occasion and toast the success of the landmark venue, including Emmerdale character ‘Laurel Thomas’. The events team at Burn Hall had prepared for all eventualities, the only thing out of their control was the weather, but they needn’t have worried…. the sun was shining and the hotel was ready to greet its first guests with Champagne and canapés. A thunder in the skies above proved a little worrying for onlookers but all became clear when four RAF aircraft from Linton on Ouse provided an amazing display at 250 feet above the hotel. General Manager, Peter Auld said: “It’s a great day for us here at Burn Hall – and I’m delighted to see everyone here enjoying themselves and getting the chance to see our great venue and facilities. All the proceeds made here today will be donated to Cancer Research UK, a charity which does fantastic work to support people with Cancer and their friends and family. I hope you enjoy the day and that many of you come back and take advantage of our Hotel’s introductory rates – we’re very proud of our venue and we want to spread the good news!” Mr Auld was joined by celebrity guest Charlotte Bellamy (Laurel Thomas from Emmerdale) who cut the red ribbon for the official opening of the venue. With a cheer from the crowd the party carried on throughout the afternoon. The hotel’s beautiful landscaped gardens were scattered with local craft stalls, a stunning display of vintage cars supplied by Superior Motor Cars lined the driveway and an amazing Kata tent – a tipi style tent which were pioneered by the Sami people of Lapland – took prime position on the front lawns of the hotel. Music was played by the Pavilion string quartet which drifted through the corridors along with the sweet smells of the chef’s barbecue and Sunday carvery. The catwalk, which featured outfits from Elizabeth of York, Pronuptia, High Society, Cachet and York Hire men’s wear, was held in the magnificent main function room followed by the auction where Burn Hall guests had the chance to bid against each other and win some wonderful prizes. To keep the children entertained Burn Hall provided pony rides, face painters, a treasure hunt, magicians, a bouncy castle, carrousel rides, a story teller and even a rodeo bull! As the evening drew to a close guests watched the amazing firework display and danced to the latest hits provided by Night Owls in the hotel’s Bensons Bar. Excellent condition The Developer’s view At the beginning of the month it was reported in The Advertiser that Hambleton District Council’s Development Control Committee had refused permission for Dovecote Developments Limited to demolish and rebuild the historic dovecote behind Chase Garth, Long Street. The company are currently constructing several town houses around the dovecote; The Advertiser spoke to Mike Almond about why the company wish to demolish the existing building, which is in a Conservation Area. Dovecote Developments Limited are building environmentally friendly carbon neutral homes, with modern insulation and solar heating. Mike argues that the cost of heating the dovecote alone would be as much if not more than the rest of the site put together, whereas if they were to rebuild it they would use modern materials and insulate the dovecote to the same standard as the houses. He says, “We don’t want to change the outside appearance of it, we’ll keep it looking like a dovecote. We’ll still put the same roof on it, we’ll put the pigeon loft on the top so it looks like a dovecote. But buildings have a life the same as human beings and they outgrow their use… sooner or later you have to take them down and rebuild them and in my opinion that’s what needs to be done here.” Mike continues: “We’ve had a structural engineer do an assessment of it and they’ve condemned the building, they want it taking down and rebuilding. It’s only the local planning committee that’s made up of un-elected volunteers, unprofessional as well in any building knowledge, that’s decided they want to keep it.” Mike is disappointed that a plan for the building’s future wasn’t decided upon with planners at an earlier stage if they had wanted to incorporate it into the development. The application to demolish and rebuild the dovecote was heard at an Easingwold Town Council meeting in June where councillors expressed their wish to see it refused and requested the matter be considered by the Development Control Committee. In July this committee deferred a decision to receive information on the suitability of the building for conversion. In August, as previously reported, after hearing support and objection to the application, permission was refused as “the proposal would result in the loss of a building of historic value and significance to the conservation area.” The decision was contrary to the recommendation of the Director of Planning and Environmental Services. players who remember the days when their kness, too, were knocking.
