On this day, up to one million worshippers join a procession, known as the ‘Walk of Faith’ that covers the 4.5 km distance from downtown KL up the 272 steps to the top of the famous Batu Caves, a collection of ancient limestone caves that house a number of Hindu temples, situated north of the city. On the journey, participants each carry a special kavadi (or burden) ranging from simple coloured pots to weighty altars, with some believers even engaging in more extreme acts, ranging from flagellation to body piercing. It’s noisy, chaotic, crowded and therefore not always for the faint-hearted, but it is certainly an unforgettable event. Call: 6189-6284 or visit tourism.gov.my for more information. Chinese New Year 19-20 February This month, the Chinese population of KL and across Malaysia will be welcoming the arrival of the Year of the Sheep with the celebrations reaching their peak over these two days of national holiday. The Lunar New Year festivities actually run over about 15 days and will feature large family reunions, gift giving and plenty of public events. During the holiday period, many people will be wearing red and the major shopping malls will be putting on auspicious and dramatic lion and dragon dance performances to bring good luck. Expect the whole city to be in a celebratory mood KL Q4 2014.indb 3 but some of the best locations to visit to soak up the unique atmosphere include the Thean Hou Temple on the outskirts of KL and the Golden Triangle in the heart of the historic old town. Visit tourism.gov.my for more information but note the dates here are the two national holidays. Throughout the city MARCH Malaysia GP Sale March-April Held as part of the celebrations around the Petronas Malaysian F1 GP (which is due to take place over the weekend of 27-29 March), this carnival sale sweeps the nation with great discounts and promotions on a whole host of different items at leading malls around KL. Now in its 22nd year, the event, which started in a café in Sydney, Australia, but now features screenings all over the world, has become a launch pad for aspiring filmmakers and requires entrants to create a film specifically for the festival. The main event will be a presentation of the selected finalists at the Esplanade but there will also be Q&A sessions and screenings of other films with the region’s leading directors in the week leading up to the Festival Day. Visit tropfest.com/sea for more information.
