Preparation
ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape
for Delicate Surfaces
--Various paint colors
--Paint brushes or rollers
--Tape measure
--Pencil & level
•• Remove wall hangings and fill nail holes.
•• Smooth the wall with sandpaper and wipe with a damp cloth.
•• Apply your basecoat color to the entire wall and let it dry 24 hours.
•• Plan your design: Sketch it out on paper, playing with
the layout and creating different sizes of squares and
rectangles, until you come up with a motif you like.
Step by Step Guide
Step 1: Draw Your Design
Step 2: Mask Squares
Step 3: Start Painting
Step 4: Remove Tape
With your paper sketch as a guide,
use a pencil and a level to draw your
design directly onto the wall.
Using ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape
for Delicate Surfaces, mask along
the pencil lines for your first set of
squares.
Grab your paint brush or roller and
start adding color to your wall. For
best results, start with your lightest
color and finish with your darkest.
Before the paint dries, gently
remove the tape. Once the paint is
completely dry, repeat steps 2, 3
and 4 for each new color.
HINT: Keep the center of your
design in the center of the wall,
following the artist’s “Golden Rule” of
using 2/3 of the wall for the design
and 1/3 to flank the sides.
HINT: “Batch” the work –mask all
the boxes that will be the same
color (starting with your lightest
color), so you can paint them all at
the same time.

Heavy Texture* (knock-down¹)

• Consider the size of the room and the potential size of each shape.
• You may wish to vary the sizes and use a range of shapes –
including squares, circles, triangles, and rectangles.
• Shapes can completely cover the wall, overlap one another, or be
free standing.
• Sketch your vision on paper, drawn to scale. This will give you a
blueprint of how the selected shapes, widths, and spacing will fit
onto your wall.
• Use tape to bring your vision to life and see it come together before
you paint.

• Choose colors that work well together and enhance the base color
of your wall.
• Create added depth and interest by choosing colors that contrast
with one another.
• Think about the feeling you wish to evoke: bold colors create a
sense of energy and excitement; muted neutral colors are softer
and more soothing.
• Before you buy, consider bringing home paint swatches or samples,
to get an idea of how the colors will look together in your space. It’s
a great way to avoid time-consuming painting mistakes.

Get Extra Sharp Lines
Don’t Stretch It
Countertops, Tile, Caulk
Seal your tape edges with a thin
layer of base coat paint. This
prevents seepage and gives
you extra sharp, professional
paint lines.
When masking any surface,
pull tape off the roll a few feet at
a time. Avoid stretching the tape,
as this can cause it to lift up
or break.
