SEPTEMBER 2012 Vol. 19.9 SEPTEMBER 2012 $1.001 Charlotte Blues Society PO Box 32752 Charlotte, NC28232-2752 www.CharlotteBluesSociety.org BLUE Sunday ~ September 2, 2012 The PamTaylor Band As a 3rd generation musician, Pam Taylor has had a life-long dream of forming her own band. Sharing her love of blues with her father, they have teamed up with some of the most dedicated and talented musicians in the Southeast to form the Pam Taylor Band … and they are taking the local music scene by storm! Their most recent achievement is winning the 2012 Charlotte Music Awards Women in Rock Showcase. (Read more about the band inside) The Double Doors open at 7:00 Music starts 8:00 Door Inn 1218 Charlottetown Ave. 704-376-1446 CBS Members – FREE Non-members – $5:00 (2) Bluesletter More About The Pam Taylor Band Pam Taylor is a singer, songwriter, and guitar player. Her vocal artistry sometimes shares similarities to Susan Tedeschi – or Bonnie Raitt – or Etta James – or maybe Janis Joplin and Joan Jett. She has shared the stage with such artists as Los Lobos, JP Soars, Vasti Jackson, Lionel Young, Tommy Castro, Nick Moss, Jason Ricci, Deanna Bogart, Jimmy Carpenter, Elvin Bishop, and Deborah Coleman. (Below: Pam, Tommy Castro, Mike Taylor) Mike Taylor started playing the sax in the school band at age 13 and began playing professionally while still in his teens. After about 10 years of touring he called it quits to focus on family and over the last five he has gotten back to his roots, the blues, and is tearing up the stage alongside his daughter. Kyle Phillips is a locally known musician who has been very active in the music scene around Concord and Charlotte as well as Lancaster, SC. While his preferred instrument is the electric guitar, he also enjoys playing bass and harmonica. Gerry Hagstedt started learning about percussion and drums at an early age. He grew up listening to Southern Rock and Blues, and Paul Riddle (of Marshal Tucker Band) became his favorite drummer. Gerry has played and recorded with a variety of bands -- jazz, free form Jam band music, and Southern Rock – but his passion became Blues after attending his first concert with the legendary Muddy Waters opening for the Allman Brothers Band. Rusty Gilreath started playing bass in a jazz band at school. Later, his experience playing with local bands earned him a spot playing his summers at Carowinds in live shows. He played in various R&B and Jazz bands in college, and has jammed or played with acts as diverse as Harry Chapin, Merle Haggard, Chuck Mangione, and the Marshall Tucker Band. Don’t miss the excitement of The PAM TAYLOR BAND BLUESunday ~ Sept. 2 "Love seeing the women do their thing. His "Iron Man" moniker was born from his hours-long, intensely physical performances, his fearsome guitar attack and his tough, smoky vocals. His fiery music was driven by an intense, blue collar work ethic that won him a rabid worldwide fan base. Between his blistering guitar sound -- which could at any moment become sweetly melodic -- and his live charisma, Burks earned four Blues Music Award nominations, including, most recently, the 2012 nomination for Guitarist Of The Year. GuitarOne named his Alligator Records debut album, MAKE IT RAIN, one of the Top 200 greatest guitar recordings of all time. When he suddenly died at age 54 on May 6, 2012, the world lost a true musical treasure. Burks' final album, SHOW OF STRENGTH, was recorded and finished just prior to his untimely death. Burks' signature combination of feral yet tuneful guitar work with his gritty, dynamic vocals provides a searing, emotional autobiography in blues. According to Alligator president Bruce Iglauer, "It was my decision to leave this album as we intended it, not as a memorial to a friend and bluesman gone, but as a living, breathing statement, sent straight from Michael's heart and soul. Although Michael is not here, the music he recorded is indeed his show of his immense strength and spirit. It will live on, confirming forever his status as one of the greatest bluesmen of his generation." - - Review excerpt from Alligator Records Jimmy Bowskill Band - Back Number (Ruf Records) Jimmy Bowskill is the wunderkid from Canada. Bowskill got his start at 11 years old in Jeff Healey’s Toronto night club. He has been dazzling audiences around the world ever since. At 21 years of age, he just released this fifth album. While touring Europe, Jimmy caught the ear of Thomas Ruf who released Jimmy Bowskill Band Live in 2010. The record captured the raw power and feral intensity of the band and set the stage for this powerhouse release. While not directly blues, this music’s relationship to blues is akin to music by Cream, Mountain, Free, or even Gov’t Mule, drawing direction from the blues, and inspiration in minor key riffs. This is pouring out the pain in the finest tradition. On this album the amps are turned up! It’s a gritty, crunchy sound with smoldering guitar serving as a launching pad for Bowskill’s rich tenor vocals. Bowskill melds elements from blues and rock, forging a power trio sound for the modern era. The maturity of Bowskill’s playing comes from 10 years of listening and learning, and playing with musicians more advanced than he. He resists the urge to over play. He doesn’t slash and burn and fizzle out. This album should appeal to fans of guitar driven blues and blues rock. The band borrows from blues influenced classic rockers and takes a few tricks directly from blues sources like Freddie King. With powerful backing from an international label and an arsenal of great songs, Bowskill looks poised to get major attention in the blues/rock community. - - Review excerpt from Jim Kanavy (TheBluesBlast.com) ========================================================================== N E W S Blind Pig Records has just released new studio CDs by Magic Slim and the Teardrops and Deanna Bogart, both of whom are past multiple winners of Blues Music Awards. Magic Slim, seventy-five years young, proves on his newest Blind Pig release, Bad Boy, that he can still deliver the goods For her latest Blind Pig release, Deanna has produced something unique in her recorded work, a beautifully intimate effort entitled Pianoland that spotlights her considerable skills as a pianist and a solo performer. SEPTEMBER 2012 7 SEVERN Zac Harmon Music is Medicine (Self-release) If you like your new cd to have a band play songs that sound alike, you won’t find it here. Zac Harmon and his band have pulled inspiration from every influence they have ever run across. There are several BLUES-based songs on this CD that are quite good. But the “dyed in the wool, old school” blues aficionados will stick their noses in the air. Zac’s vocals remind me of Robert Cray, while his band is more R&B based. They flavor their music with Gospel, Jazz, (much) Funk, BLUES, and one song even reminded me of TOTO. I enjoyed listening to his inspirational song/lyrics but this one won’t be stuck in my CD player. One more thing – I listened through twice before I turned it up loud, the mix was very polished, BUT … is a reason to send your CD to a “professional” mastering company.) Make sure to play this one loud! (There - - Review by Gene Gene Luther Dickinson Hambone’s Meditations (Songs of the South) Luther Dickinson has played with so many musicians of various styles and generations that I won’t list them all. I’ll let you look it up. But just when you get used to the expected, expect the unexpected – a very personal record. No one is on it other than Luther and an acoustic guitar – no vocals. Don’t expect any of the stylings that he is known for. He is just a talented guitar player that spans all different genres of American music and, as he puts it best, this is in the style of John Fahey. This is one of the most peaceful albums to listen to. Luther’s fingerpicking is intricate and keeps each song very interesting to the ear. He utilizes the slide on some songs to sail across the strings. While the songs are very melodic, his thumb provides a very deep, steady bass. No matter what you are doing, this album can put you in a trance as you listen. The subtleties in notes and the spaces between really give time for the brain to wrap around this music. I played it as background music in a busy kitchen one weekend and when it finished, I was asked to play it again – it added to the conversation. - - Review excerpt from Kyle M. MOF members began their band journey about 6 years ago as friends in high school. With only an occasion change in their line-up, MOF continued to impress audiences with their individual talents. Starting with Blues and Southern Rock, they expanded their sound to include originals and jazzier tunes. And now, Brian, Josh, Jon, and Tim have found other avenues to pursue. But they aren’t going away totally.
