JEREMIAH PATTERSON OBSERVATIONS AND REFLECTIONS NOVEMBER 6 – DECEMBER 6, 2012 MERCY GALLERY - RICHMOND ART CENTER THE LOOMIS CHAFFEE SCHOOL - WINDSOR, CONNECTICUT JEREMIAH PATTERSON OBSERVATIONS AND REFLECTIONS NOVEMBER 6 – DECEMBER 6, 2012 MERCY GALLERY RICHMOND ART CENTER THE LOOMIS CHAFFEE SCHOOL WINDSOR, CONNECTICUT The Still Life Watercolors In addition to my admiration of Italian Renaissance Art, I also love the Dutch and Flemish masters, and I make every effort to capture a like richness of form, texture, and color in my own paintings. I strive to paint deeply into the forms in my work and into the spaces around them, working layers of color up towards a textural surface from within the area’s inner structure, successively trying to pull everything out of each form that I see. I love the direct process involved in watercolor painting, working one color over another to add richness, complexity, and luminosity to the whole work. My primary compositional concern is to have the arrangement feel natural, as if the viewer just happened upon everything that is there, and all remains well within the realm of our normal life’s possibilities. In addressing this concern, I arrange my settings to feel comfortable, in that the positions, poses and subjects seem natural, possible, and realistic. In this way, I also avoid overt fantasy and work hard to find the fine point between idealizing a form and the gritty realization of its minute details. In choice of subject, I sometimes make subtle reference to certain themes I find in Italian Renaissance or Flemish paintings, working to create compositions, which may touch on these timeless themes, but do so by revealing them in a contemporary, modern, and realistic way. My compositions have explored allegorical themes such as “The Four Seasons”, narrative themes such as “The Annunciation”, as well as what I call my, “Kitchen Still Life Compositions” in which the combination of still life objects are the ingredients in a favorite recipe. I hope that the themes within my work remain subtle in their presentation, playing a small part in an image that highlights a beautiful moment in time during our 21st century life. The objects were things, and those things were suddenly just that, things. I knew I wanted to portray the inner spirit of what I painted. A journey that began with pencil drawings of my daughter Anna in the first hours of her seeing the world inside the hospital room, eventually led to a series of figurative paintings and portraiture. These works enabled me to continue to be involved, and further delve into stories and themes from Renaissance work that I loved, all the while bringing them into the future of our 21st century life. The use of the figure was a new challenge, a means to further study and learn ways to depict its form and explore the range of emotions bound in a subtle glance. My three large figurative paintings selected for the exhibition involve stories and people from the past, depicted as if they happened today, capturing the moment just before they take a course in their lives which will forever mark their histories. In my studio I employ a methodical and layered approach to watercolor painting, each work taking several weeks, and sometimes months to complete. However, watercolor is also a medium that can capture quickly and directly, making it perfectly suited to the looser and faster approach of a travel painting. In addition, its ability to be packed compactly makes carrying a whole studio of materials around in your pocket quite possible. I also carry a journal while traveling, in which I jot down notes to myself as a way to remember the places and stories that I encounter. This exhibition includes several excerpts from these travel journals, written at a coinciding time to the paintings shown. The 24 plein-air landscape works on display represent a selection of travel paintings done over the past fifteen years, the collection of which now consists of well over 100 paintings. I began making these paintings as a way to explore the affects of space and light on color. They were a way for me to save the memories of my travel experiences, documenting fleeting moments in time during my visits to Italy, Sicily, and France. They were also a way for me to paint simply for the sake of painting.
