Girl Scout Day

“Sugar and spice and everything nice. That's what little
girls are made of.” And little girls are what were seen
around Camarillo Airport for Girl Scout Day on Saturday,
October 15.
Thirty-five girls and six adults began arriving at
8:15am, greeted by Sheila Collier and Pattie Mullins, of
the Girl Scout Council. After checking in, the girls had
their passport pictures taken beside Jack Vautin's 1939

Self Fly Africa
Join the Ventura County Ninety-Nines for their
monthly dinner and meeting on Tuesday, November
15 (third Tuesday of the month) for dinner,
socializing and immediately following, our business
meeting. This month, we will have a presentation of
the spectacular Self Fly Africa presentation by
Ventura County Ninety-Nine, Linda Ehrlich. Linda will
be speaking about the flight planning, show a video of
some of the highlights, talk about the differences of
flying in Africa, as well as answer questions.
Ottavio’s Italian Restaurant on Ventura Blvd. (at
the Carmen Avenue exit of 101) will be our venue--in
their private dining room. We will have 4 menu
options to choose from (salad, pasta, etc.) for dining
at 5:30pm. Of course the guys are invited to join us
and stay for the program at 6:30. Our business
meeting will follow. If you are bringing a spouse or
significant other, think about bringing two cars or
plan to send them to the bar
for a guy’s manly pow-wow.

After a “Safety Briefing” by Carol Vautin, the girls were
divided into three groups, led by Linda Ehrlich, Rhonda
Tarli, Charlotte Alexander and Carol Camargo, and were
sent on their ways to one of four different sessions.
The Careers session was lead by Judy Phelps and her
crew. The girls not only had the opportunity learn about
what is available as careers in aviation, but also the
chance to sit in a plane, complete with headsets. There
was also a “runway” taped out on the ground for the girls
to fly their planes.

tour of the China Doll transport plane, always a big hit
with the girls.
Because of the discontinuation of the Aerospace badge,
which our program was built around, and the release of a
1947 Vintage Aviation patch (to celebrate the 100th
anniversary of the Girl Scouts in 2012), our program was
altered a bit at the last minute to include the
requirements of the Vintage Aviation patch. Although the
Aerospace badge has been discontinued, there are still
badges available, and as requirements for each patch
were met, the girls were able to earn both patches from
the one event.
It was a fun, exciting and educational day for all.
The Parts of the Plane session had an exciting blend of
aircraft. Carolyn Brown discussed the parts of an
airplane, with high-wing and low-wing planes on
displays. Susie McWilliams presented her helicopter and
Peggy Watson-Meinke discussed hot air balloons,
including having the girls climb in the basket.
The History of Women in Aviation was taught by Lori
Parker and Martha Phillips. The girls not only got to learn
about the history of women in aviation, but got to taste it
too. They got to experience a little of life as an astronaut
with samples of “Astronaut food,” freeze-dried ice cream
and snack bars.
And last, but certainly not least, the CAF (Commemorative Air Force) had the museum open, with docents

were we. The brakeman spent a tremendous amount of
time in our car, as the 99s gave him plenty of attention.
The next fun activity was the Friday night Gala, which
was held at the Strater Theater, a darling venue designed in
a way to have great viewing of the entertainment. Four
cowboys sang country songs with a humorous twist which
kept us laughing between bites of yummy food.

Planes, Trains and 99s!
When you combine a short business meeting with lots
of fun activities, now that makes for a great trip! (Oh yes,
and a nice little tax deduction...) Seven VC99s went to the
Southwest Section meeting in Durango October 21st23rd. Judy Phelps, Judy McCarthy, Julie Schular flew to
Durango in CP Aviation's 182, Carol and I flew our 49
1/2s, Angelee came in on a commercial flight, while
Martha and Art enjoyed a scenic drive. Perfect weather
made for easy flights both directions, allowing stunning
views of the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley. Oh my
gosh, I guess we can call this an official “fly out”!!
Nature was very accommodating, showing us her very
best of fall Colorado colors as we enjoyed the first official
activity - the famous train ride from Durango to
Silverton. With over one hundred 99s on board, you can
imagine that the train staff was not bored and neither
By the time the business meeting took place on Saturday
morning, we felt like we had already had a vacation! That
afternoon, many took the opportunity to go to Mesa Verde
National Park. Since I used to live in Colorado, I instead
facilitated a discussion on scholarships which proved to be
a fantastic opportunity to brainstorm with others from
both the Southwest and South Central Sections.
Saturday evening the Awards dinner was held at the
Durango/Silverton Train Museum, with delicious food,
great stories and the wonderful camaraderie of women
who fly. Our 49 1/2s snuck out the back door just before
the awards ceremony began to discuss flight planning
(wink, wink).
Sunday morning was another day of abundant sunshine.
Our three planes were the first to depart at 8am and we
chatted on 123.45 on the way home. Judy and crew
stopped in Sedona for lunch and ended up taking a
helicopter ride!
The Southwest Section Winter Workshop will be
January 28th, 2012 in Santa Cruz. Let's all fly out for the
weekend and have some more fun!
(Oh yes, and attend the meeting.)

There’s Always Someone
to Congratulate
In the Ventura County Ninety-Nines
On October 10 Yolanda Langley passed her checkride!
Yolanda has wanted to be pilot since she was a little girl,
was a Ventura County Ninety-Nine scholarship recipient
and now can boast she’s a card-carrying
private pilot! Congratulations, Yolanda.

A Celebration
for Judy Phelps
A dinner was held on
Friday October 7 to celebrate
Judy Phelp's achievement of
being named FAA 2011
National CFI of the Year. The
event was held at the Sterling
Hills Country Club and was
attended by about 110 people.
Although many of those
present were pilots some of
Judy's friends and family were
there, as well as staff from
Logsdon's, and some of her
fellow Rotary Club members.
The center pieces for each
table were a series of photos
of Judy which followed the
theme of the invitations and
the program cards.

CFI of the
Year 2011
A lively cocktail hour and welcome from Tobey Tabor were
followed by the dinner buffet during which photos of Judy
were shown on the TV. Following the dinner the program
started with the video introduction of Judy that was made at
her awards ceremony in Oshkosh. Martha Phillips presented
Judy with a 99s ring from the Ventura County Chapter of the
99s and spoke of Judy's contributions to the group. She has
contributed scholarships and intro flights through CP Aviation
to support many of our fundraisers, been a speaker at our
classes, and served on the Board, but perhaps most
importantly she has encouraged and trained a significant
number of our members in their aviation goals.
David Voelker from the FAA then described the process
used to select the local, then national candidates for the award
and introduced Judy. Judy spoke about the honor of receiving
the award, and some of the people who had helped her on the
path to CFI of the Year. The program finished with a second
video of Judy's flying activities, showing scenes from
Oshkosh and photos of fellow 99s as her students.
At Our Meeting Last Month . . .

There were two new members – Mignon and Heather.
Mignon has been interested in flying for a long time but
other things in life delayed it. Her 16 year old son is
taking lessons as well and the shared experience has
brought them closer. Heather is a pilot for Skydive Coastal
California at the Camarillo Airport. Originally from
Oregon, this is her second gig in California. She previously
worked another jump zone in the Taft/Bakersfield area.

It's that time of year again. The VC99s Scholarship
Committee have applications available on line at
www.VC99s.org and at your local FBOs for Private Pilot
Scholarships and an Advanced Scholarship. Deadline for
applying is November 1, 2011 for these Winter
Scholarships, that will be awarded at the VC99s Christmas
Party at Lost Canyons Golf Club on December 4, 2011. The
scholarship amounts are up to $3000 now for the Private
Pilot, and up to $2500 for the Advanced Pilot scholarship.
The flight training must be completed at one of the
following Ventura County airports: KCMA, KNTD, KSZP,
KOXR. Check out the applications for details. And, if you
have applied in the past, we strongly
encourage you to apply again!

The Presentation - there was a video, Flying in Nepal, by
Marin County Ninety-Nine, Kitty Houghton about the
amazing Ninety-Nines in Nepal. Truly inspiring
considering the challenges they face to become pilots.
There were collective groans and gasps in our group at
the plane landing on the hilly, gravel 'runway'. And we
thought Santa Paula runway
was a challenge….
