< www.royalenfield.com > JULY | AUGUST | SEPTEMBER 2013 Royal Enfield CONTINENTAL GT: UK LAUNCH RIDE OF VALOUR 12 GETAWAYS REUNION SOUTH 2013 GUEST EDITOR Continental GT -The Café Racer I can’t remember where the idea of the café racer originated at Royal Enfield, perhaps because it didn’t happen like a great inspirational spark from one individual. It was a constant agenda from our hard-core biker journo set; every time we met – they’d coax us to make one. I guess there’s a perfect time and place for everything, and our time for the café racer was 2010, when we had some elbow-room to try something very different. It was always possible to just slap on a nice tank, sporty handlebars and a few other accessories and make our bike look like a café racer. But being dead against that approach, we knew that if we were to make a café racer, it had to be the next evolution in our brand philosophy of ‘pure motorcycling’. We set out to make a machine that was a true homage to the golden days of motorcycling; a time when you had to push the bike hard to get more from it; it was a companion who grew along with your own motorcycling abilities and was a platform to work upon/ soup up/ modify to get it to your liking. If you dropped the bike, you just picked it up and got going again – the scars were easy to fix, and added to the personality of the bike. It wasn’t crazily expensive to own, repair and ride; it was just the best way of getting around. Period. We believe today leisure motorcycles have gotten big, heavy and electronic; black boxes that need a super technician to work upon them. These big bikes are superfast and super-expensive and are extremely demanding; kind of like a high-maintenance trophy wife (are there any other kind?!). We took the challenge to make our café racer the most fun that you can have on two wheels without the accompanying baggage, and put as few restrictions on ourselves as possible in order to capture the spirit of the idea. We did not develop the engine from scratch, however we weren’t going to leave it as was either. Taking the UCE platform as a base, we bumped the cubic capacity, reduced inertial weight, and re-mapped the ECU with a result that we got just that extra power in a more responsive manner. The bike needed to be light, responsive, with great handling abilities and fun to ride. GUEST EDITOR The main performance development clip-on handlebars. Eleven riders from the Desert Rider’s Club started from Adipur and after crossing Delhi moved into the hills via the famed Jalori Pass. Riding from Chandigarh to Shimla in the slightly misty weather was a treat. Reaching Shimla in the afternoon gave us half a day to explore the famous Mall Road and the infamous Scandal Point. The original route was planned through Reckong Peo but due to heavy rains the riders had to ride through Jalori Pass. The bikers went through passes, roads, broken roads and no roads at all, before reaching Tandi, the last filling station for the next 365 kms. Having entered Ladakh, and after covering another 3,000 kms the riders were home safely. < To join more such rides from Gandhidham please get in touch with Bhavesh Patel at bpatel@royalenfield.com > .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. 2 Independence Day Ride: Mumbai On 15th August, 2013, a large group of riders assembled in front of the Royal Enfield Brand Store in Bandra, Mumbai to celebrate India’s Independence Day with a commemorative ride around town. The ride started from Bandra and moved towards South Mumbai, as a crowd of onlookers gaped in amazement at the shiny thumping machines. Riding systematically in a long convoy for about 75 kms, and exhibiting the utmost discipline, the riders created an impressive spectacle. < To join more such rides from Mumbai, please get in touch with Harshil Desai at hjdesai@royalenfield.com > .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. 3 Independence Day Ride: Indore On Independence Day, more than 80 riders assembled at RR Automotives, Indore, and it was a proud moment for everyone who had joined in to celebrate the day by riding their beloved Royal Enfield motorcycles. After the initial briefing about the annual Independence Day Ride to Jaam-Gate, or the gateway of ‘Malwa’, the bikers lined up after gearing up themselves to start the ride. Beginning all the way to Jaam-Gate via Mhow, AB Highway, the route set the perfect mood for the feeling of freedom with lush greenery, dense forest and ghat areas and crossing over some beautiful water bodies and little seasonal falls. The ride ended with the bikers enjoying the local food, like the delicious dal-bafla-laddu. < To join more such rides from Indore please get in touch with Ashish Mishra at amishra7@royalenfield.com > .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. 2 JULY | AUGUST | SEPTEMBER 2013 KEEP RIDING 4 Independence Day Ride: Lucknow Early in the morning of 15th August, Royal Enfield riders and enthusiasts gathered at the Royal Enfield Brand Store in Lucknow for the celebration of the Independence Day Ride. A total of around 84 riders and pillions got together for this ride and after a briefing and discussion about the route, set off inside the city. The riders first rode towards the famous La Martiniere College where they interacted with the youngsters and gave safe riding tips and a talk on traffic awareness. This was one occasion where the Royal Enfield riders contributed towards the betterment of the society by supporting the cause of creating traffic awareness. After this talk, the riders then rode around Lucknow for over 50 kms and stopped at various locations to promote safe riding. < To join more such rides from Lucknow please get in touch with Harshil Desai at hjdesai@royalenfield.com > .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. 5 Independence Day Ride: Udaipur To celebrate the occasion of Independence Day, a one-day trip from Udaipur was organised. The ride was slated to start from Udaipur and lead to Ubheshwar, which is about 18 kms out of the city and is famous for a Mahadev Temple and its pristine natural beauty. A total of 15 riders assembled early morning at the Voyage Motors Showroom in Udaipur and started off on this ride. The ride was led by Mr Jatin Gandhi and Mr Jasbeer Gandhi, both die hard riders and Royal Enfield enthusiasts in their own sense. The biggest charm of this ride was the pleasant weather in the surrounding hilly areas and the cool climate which after the North Indian summer was certainly a relief. The riders also stopped at the Sheraton Hotel for a break while on this ride. < To join more such rides from Udaipur, please get in touch with Ashwani Karadia at akaradia@royalenfield.com > .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. 6 Mud Valley Ride: Amravati The Mud Valley Ride was conducted from 16 to 18th August, 2013, at the hill station of Chikaldhara and Melghat Tiger Reserve in Amravati, Maharashtra. Pristine and unexplored, untouched by civilization, Chikaldhara is the crown of the Satpura hill range. The lush green Melghat Tiger Reserve, which covers 2,030 sq kms of the hills, is a refreshing destination. The bikers rode up the serpentine 75 kms-long winding uphill road which seemed to blend into its surroundings. The terrain was marked by lush green hills, misty valleys and towering waterfalls. Monsoon being the ideal season to visit Chikaldhara, this ride was specifically conducted during this time. Riders from neighbouring cities like Nagpur also joined in and had their share of adventure. There was immense support for the riders, such as navigational guidance and on-ground assistance, by the Nagpur-based Royal Enfield riders club better known as Zero Mile Riders Club (ZMRC) who helped the Amravti Royal Enfield Riders Club or the MH27 Thumpriders, in conducting this event. < To join more such rides from Amravati, please write get in touch with Arif Khan at makhan3@royalenfield.com > .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. JULY | AUGUST | SEPTEMBER 2013 3 KEEP RIDING 7 Mumbai to Panshet On 17th August, 2013, as the monsoons intensified in the western region, a ride to Panshet was organised from Mumbai with 25 riders. The bikers assembled at the Royal Enfield Brand Store in Bandra, Mumbai early in the morning and set off towards Pune on the NH 4. The riders rode through pleasant weather, and an occasional shower, as they reached Pune and rode further on the Western Ghats to reach Panshet. Arrangements had been made for an overnight stay at a resort and the weary riders spent the evening relaxing and sharing anecdotes with each other. The next day, the riders rode back to Mumbai covering a total distance of 575 kms over 2 days. Riding back into Mumbai the riders dispersed with the promise of returning for more rides and adventures on their Royal Enfield motorcycles. < To join more such rides from Mumbai, please get in touch with Harshil Desai at hjdesai@royalenfield.com > .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. 8 Gurgaon to Surajgarh On 24th August, 2013, a ride was kick-started to Surajgarh from Manzil Motors in Gurgaon. The town of Surajgarh in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan derives its name from an 18th century palace, Fort Surajgarh, literally meaning the castle of the sun. Spread across 4 acres of lush green gardens, this fortified palace has been recently renovated and seems fit for kings! The dusty terrain traversed while comprised smooth highways, village roads and a small section of dirt, which added adventure to this trip. The ride was led by Anil Goyal, who ensured safety throughout the ride, as well as adventure which was the prime focus. It took the riders a good 7 hours to reach the destination and after ending the ride the riders called it a day. The next morning they woke up to bright sunshine and then proceeded further to explore the region before treating themselves to a scrumptious brunch and departing for Gurgaon again. < To join more such rides from Gurgaon, please get in touch with Anil Goyal at agoyal@royalenfield.com > .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. 9 Mumbai to Dapoli On 31st of August, 2013 as the monsoons lashed out at the Western Ghats, 25 riders set off from the Royal Enfield Brand Store in Bandra, Mumbai, down the west coast to Dapoli and then westwards to Ladghar. The Konkan coast has pristine landscape and good roads where the Royal Enfield rider feels at home as the torquey machines easily tackle the twisties and rough terrain. A total of 595 kms were covered in this ride with an overnight stay organised for them. The rains were hardly a deterrent for the riders for whom the call of adventure and the passion for the Royal Enfield motorcycle was reason enough to get together and ride out every weekend. < To join more such rides from Mumbai, please get in touch with Harshil Desai at hjdesai@royalenfield.com > .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. 4 JULY | AUGUST | SEPTEMBER 2013 KEEP RIDING 10 Delhi to Mussoorie On 14th September, 17 riders from west Delhi kicked off the ride to Mussoorie, about 35 kms from Uttarakhand’s capital, Dehradun, and 290 kms north from New Delhi. The ride began from Lamba Enterprises Showroom in Tilak Nagar and covered a distance of about 600 kms during this 2-day ride. The riders rode back to Delhi on 15th September after enjoying a short ride to the hill-station. The pleasant and chilly weather of the region, the smooth highways, the smaller city roads, the twisties of the hilly terrain, and the dangerous off-road sections, were greatly enjoyed by all. The great thing about such rides is the sense of discipline and responsibility with which each rider rides across such an adventurous terrain. < To join more such rides from New Delhi, please get in touch with Anil Goyal at agoyal@royalenfield.com > .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. 11 Lucknow to Sravasti On 21st September 2013, a group of 16 riders on their Royal Enfield motorcycles rode out from the Lucknow Royal Enfield Brand Store towards Bahraich. The monsoons were by now retreating and rain-showers had become less frequent, creating excellent conditions for riding. The distance from Lucknow to Bahraich, and from there to Sravasti on the NH 28C and back, made the complete ride of over 500 kms. Sravasti is an important historical place where Lord Buddha spent a significant part of his life; it has monuments dating from that era. The riders stayed over for the night and rode back on their trusted machines to Lucknow the next day. The bonding with fellow riders and the excitement of getting to explore a place of such historical importance was something the riders would cherish for life. < To join more such rides from Lucknow, get in touch with Piyush Gupta at pgupta4@royalenfield.com > .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. 12 Mumbai to Pirangut A ride from the Royal Enfield Brand Store in Bandra, Mumbai, was organised on 28th September, 2013, as a part of the Keep Riding initiative. The ride started from Mumbai and headed towards Lonavla and from there to Pirangut. There were a total of 16 riders riding together and it definitely created a spectacle for the onlookers. The riders also took breaks at scenic locations to soak in the scenery of the Western ghats and explore the region they had ridden to. A total of 550 kms were covered by the riders in all, which was ably led by the Royal Enfield staff riders. Technical help was also available at all times for contingencies. < To join more such rides from Mumbai, get in touch with Harshil Desai at hjdesai@royalenfield.com > ..............................................................................................................................................................................................................................
