Election Day (usual: Nov. 8) November 6 – Daylight Savings Ends November 11 – Veterans Day November 24 – Thanksgiving Day PERSPECTIVE Our election results last week were all about education and stupidity. First, let’s talk about education: Some new board members were chosen to help tackle plans and policies to improve and adapt city and county public education. Simultaneously, however, the voters both here and all across the state voted about two-to-one against Proposition 103, which called for very modest sales tax and income tax increases to raise about $3 billion over five years to offset some of the horrendous slash-and-burn school funding reductions the state legislature has been forced to implement all through this Great Recession. Folks seem to have lost faith in both their community and state leaders to improve anything. It’s especially troubling that so many voters have given up on strengthening education as the KEY factor in preparing our children for a positive, exciting and rewarding future. Actually, college enrollment is strong in spite of sky-high costs dumped on enrollees as public funding has been ripped from our state college budgets. This steady enrollment has only been possible due to the billions in student loan dollars made available by the federal government. Our young people and their families are taking on immense loans to get into and stay in our colleges. But the kids at the K through 12 level can’t hurdle the effects of slashed budgets by borrowing by Tribune Editor Jon Heaton against their futures. They depend on the community to back them, and the community this time let them down, hard. So they’re more likely to come out quite a bit short on solid prep for their adult lives. Stupidity… So now, let’s reflect on plain old stupidity. Last Tuesday, voters had the opportunity to alleviate some of the harm we have been doing to our precious children. They could have passed Proposition 103. Not only did they fail to endorse this opportunity to remedy some of the institutional ignorance they have allowed our kids to absorb … not satisfied to say, “We really would like to do this but we just can’t right now,” they said instead, “Hell no,” by a margin of over 2-to-1. That resounding “No” has about the same effect on a typical Colorado child as taking an arm or a leg, or an eye. That “No” was mean and stupid at a time when only those youngsters who pursue technology and the basic sciences (as well as history and the liberal arts) have a chance to build and pass on a good America. Are we mired in a tragedy? Is our citizenry too dumb to make the next generation competent? Flag-waving won’t help. Our very complicated civilization requires that we leave the rotting, storybook past behind. Questions regarding how to travel as safely as possible during the winter months are often answered with a plethora of varying responses, yet motorists continue to ask: What items should I keep in my vehicle? What should I do before and during a trip to make sure I’m safe? What do I do if I’m stranded in a blizzard? In an effort to create the most comprehensive list of winter safety tips, AAA, the American Red Cross, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), and the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) have worked together to incorporate each agency’s expertise into a onestop list of advice. In their Tribune article last week, the agencies offered advice on: 1.) Compiling a Winter Safety Kit, and 2.) Making pre-trip preparations, know what to do during trips, and know what to do if stranded. Further advice from the agencies this week follows: Family Safety Check: •Review your route and current driving conditions on cotrip.org or call 511 before your departure •Note the locations of varying services like fueling stations, food, and lodging Be aware that changes in elevation and the time of the day can affect and even change weather and driving conditions, so make sure to dress appropriately. Be aware that driving times may change as your trip progresses depending on weather and traffic conditions. •Leave yourself plenty of time to arrive at your destination and be well-rested for your drive. What To Do During Trips In Bad Weather: •Make sure driver and passengers have fastened their seatbelts before departure Don’t use cruise control when traveling in winter conditions Slow down! Speed limits are posted for optimum driving conditions, but during winter weather conditions, speeds should be reduced. Extend following distances, do not expect 4WD to help you stop any faster Give snow plows plenty of room and never pass on the right Maintain your lane while driving except to pass and drive as smoothly as possible. Avoid sudden stops. Maintain awareness of where you are Avoid cell phone use while driving and remember that texting while driving is against the law Be prepared that certain parts of roadways may be icier than others (including on- and offramps, bridges, overpasses, curves, etc.) Remember that commercial trucks are difficult to operate during winter conditions, and allow plenty of following distance. Larger vehicles have difficulty seeing smaller vehicles. •Although it is unlikely, it is possible to become stranded during a severe winter storm. If your vehicle breaks down or you become stranded, here are some tips: •Move your vehicle as far off the roadway as possible. Turn on your emergency flashers and ensure your lights are clear of ice and snow. If it is necessary to exit the vehicle, use the side farthest from the traffic lane and make sure there is plenty of room between you and the vehicle (in case it is struck by another vehicle). Determine your location as accurately as you can. Turn on your crank or battery radio to gather as much information from reliable sources as you can about current conditions of the storm and to hear the advice of safety officials. Stay with your vehicle at all times and never abandon your vehicle. Plows, police, and emergency responders will patrol through the storm to look for stranded motorists.
