Garza…Email: Bmgarza@aol.com Phone: 805-963-9847 Lead Story Headline BLAS M. GARZA The benefits of sister city relationships were very apparent in our Mariachi Festival trip of the last few weeks. The planning for our 9day excursion was carefully done with the help of members, both in Santa Barbara and in Puerto Vallarta. Mayo Villalpando, local member but also resident of Ayotlán, Jal. Helped in organizing our 2-day stay there. We arrived just in time to participate in Ayotlan’s “Dia del Campo” and were invited to his mountain-view camp for watching the bull fights and to party with live mariachi music. He also arranged for our visit to the mayor’s office, to the agave syrup factory and staged a wonderful party in his mountain top home, with dinner, music and foklorico dancers. Ramon Gonzalez arranged for our stay in Arandas, also arranged for a walking tour, our visit to Rotary Aranda and for our tour to “Ruta de los Cristeros”, with stops in beautiful haciendas, a cheese factory and Membership Activity The following members have renewed their memberships. Ismael helped with transportation. In Guadalajara, we were treated to a wonderful horse-drawn carriage tour of downtown, courtesy of Ramon and a lunch at “Enrique’s Tortas”. Dr. Juan Cuenca, provided us with wonderful singers for entertainment, a tour of his hospital and a street vendors lunch Gil Garcias’ cousin saw to it that we had wonderful seats at the Mariachi Gala in the Teatro Degollado where we saw a wonderful theatre presentation featuring Mariachi Vargas, Mariachi de Nati Cano and Nuevo Mariachi de Tecalitlan. Throughout this whole trip, I was aware that I could never have had access to those experiences if I were on my own personal vacation. We thank Raul Navarro and LaV for their dedication to this monthly event. The speaker was our own member and technology expert, Jim Brock, who is our Webmaster and updates our website regularly. His presentation included features of our webpage and he also spoke about our Facebook account as well as his reflections on what Twitter is. It was interesting, especially for those of us who still have a ways to go with the new social technology. Raul and LaV did a good job of promoting our montly raffle, earning us a nice profit, but the“half of cash” drawing was won by no-one-else but our own speaker, Jim Brock. Jim quickly indicated to Marti Correa that he would donate his cash winnings to the Casa Cornejo Orphanage that we support in Puerto Vallarta. Thank you very much, Jim. Page 2 SANTA BARBARA/PUERTO VALLARTA SISTER CITY COMMITTEE Update on Boca de Tomatlán Clinic Project Presently, Santa Barbara/Puerto Vallarta Sister City Committee is raising funds to build a clinic in Boca de Tomatlán. Our plan is to have Rotary Clubs, sources in Puerto Vallarta and Mexico and the Jalisco Federation to jointly fund the creation of this clinic. The project already has the approval of Jalisco Federation and we have already delivered a contribution of $13,000 toward the project plus $2,000 from Santa Barbara Rotary North. Our expectation is that when we visit Puerto Vallarta in November, we can visit the site and that construction will have begun. So why are we trying to help in this project? “Currently, C. Martha Lopez Aguilar serves as the nurse in this area, providing first aid and basic care from her own home and other temporary facilities with hospital beds and once a month from the temporary local Health Center. Between the months of March to May 2013 she applied 82 shots, 8 medical treatments, and attended 8 patients stung by scorpions, among other cases. Other common cases are snake bite, stings from stepping on aquatic fauna like sting rays and urchins, sprains by the topography of the area, stroke and diabetes crises. A clinic in this location would attend to patient first aid needs, stabilize, and assist them at any given time, and move them to the nearest hospital for further treatment. Timely care can mean the difference in saving a life.” Here is a preliminary budget estimate on contributions for the clinic: Santa Barbara Sister City Committee $13,000 Santa Barbara Rotary North $2,000 Goleta Evening Rotary $2,000 Club Rotario Sur de Puerto Vallata $ 500 Puerto Vallarta Sister City Committee $ 500 Puerto Vallarta I Madonnari $1,000 Boca de Tomatlán Luncheon $1,000 Maria Trinitaria (Mexico Charity Fund) $8,000 Federación Jalicience 3 x 1 funding $90,000 TOTAL FUNDING Page 3 $120,000 Page 3 SANTA BARBARA/PUERTO VALLARTA SISTER CITY COMMITTEE Group from Santa Bárbara attend Federación Jalicience Gala Josie Schreier, Ana Zuniga, Srta.
