Ella Hymans - Imagination Awards
Ella Hymans For my design I focused on many aspects related to the Oompa Loompas and Charlie and the Chocolate factory in general. I focused on the Old fashioned style sweets and lollipop styles featured below. I really liked the shapes and the patterns of the swirls on these sweets and thought they would create a very interesting piece. With this, I experimented with shapes and different uses to find the most effective use of both. I then focused on the candy trees and the golden tickets found in the play and the film. I liked both the bold colours of the candy trees and the rich gold of the golden tickets. I again experimented with different uses of these. I similarly took account of the ‘W’ motif representing ‘Wonka’ found on chocolate bars and the large gates of the factory in many interpretations. This I reflected and repeated as well as experimenting with different styles. I decided that for this costume bold colours were essential if they were to be seen by the audience. I also decided to use alight cotton which is both breathable and comfortable. It is also cheap so the costume could be made for multiple Ooompa Loompas. On my final design I decided to take the ‘W’ motif and reflect it horizontally, I repeated this motif down my costume and added a variety of bold colours to create an interesting effect. I also used the ‘W’ motif as almost a necklace that hung on both sides of the costume. I made this ‘W’ gold to make it look rich but also alike to the golden tickets. I also used the old fashioned sweet swirls in my final design. I put a stuffed, plush swirl around the cuffs of my costume using red and green vibrant colours. I then used these colours again on the hems of the bottom of the costume and the socks, this co-ordinated the piece nicely. I used the golden ticket as two pockets on the front of the costume. I made them gaping and large so they could be filled with the sweets show in the design. I would suggest either pinning or sticking the sweets to the garment so they don’t fall out or I would not do this and the sweets could be thrown into the audience during the show. Furthermore, I used the candy stripes on the gloves, shoes and a pocket on the back. The shoes are shaped like jesters shoes as with the pointed end it makes them look like branches on the candy trees. The pocket on the back should feature one large lollipop matching the colour scheme of the cuffs and bindings (red and green). The hair of my Oompa Loompa costume should be a series of braids dyed different colours (or it could be a wig). The hair should then be wrapped into two large swirls on either side on the head, represented the lollipop or old fashioned sweet I mentioned earlier. Finally, I am very happy with my design as I believes it is bold and striking but also represents an Oompa Loompa very well. In the future I would choose less colours for the hair as I believe it would have been more effective if it would simpler.
