KANDERSTEG
INTERNATIONAL
SCOUT CENTRE
ind your Magic! What Magic?
Kandersteg International
Scout Centre was the dream
of Lord Baden Powell and welcomes
around 10 000 Scouts and Guides
each year. The World Scout Centre
invites you to come and enjoy a
unique and International Scouting
Experience. We challenge you to
find your magic! What magic? The
magic is in the mountains, the
friendships created whilst discovering
cultural differences and the
opportunity to live life to the full. It
is found in a campfire with 800
Scouts gathered around, in the hike
to climb your first peak and in the
introduction to world-wide Scouting.
Most of all, the magic is deep inside
each person – special to them, not
touched by others, created by experiences shared and enjoyed.
For 82 years young people have
come here to experience the
alpine environment – by skis or by
foot, to try something new, to
make friends, to broaden their
horizons. Our programme is based
around the three themes of International Friendship, High Adventure and Eco Adventure – we support leaders in designing and
running the best Scouting experience for their group. Our aim is to
help young people to grow!
Young people come here and
leave enriched by this special
atmosphere, by challenges met
and friendships forged. These themes bring our guests together
and encourage them to live, learn
and ultimately try to make the
world a better place. So, come
on... Find your Magic!

These are the normal opening
times for our summer season,
which runs from June 26th until
September 7th. However, please
note that these times may vary
during the season. During the rest
of the year, the Programme Office
is generally open during the day
and the staff are here to help you.
Note
Our Summer activities (including the Weekly Summer
Programme, hikes and climbing)
are generally available from
June 26th until September 7th.
Activity reservations open on
February 1st each year.
Activities may be available before and after this time, please
check with the Programme
Office for availability.
The Programme
Office
The Programme Office operates
all year round and we are happy
to help you plan and run your own
individual programme. This can
be based on the many activities
we offer during the main winter
and summer seasons.
These activities may also be
available at other times of the
year, depending upon conditions
and the availability of staff. In any
case, we can offer advice on most
activities in and around Kandersteg. As well as our Centre programme, we have information
on attractions, special deals, unguided activities and coach excursions. Whether you want to come
alone or as part of a group, if you
want a full programme or just a
little advice, we are here to help.
You will receive a programme
request form and advice on how
to timetable your activities once
your reservation is confirmed.

Advance
Bookings
Activity reservations open on
February 1st. Once you have paid
your booking fee, you will receive
a programme request form and
advice on activities. Please complete this form and send it to us
after February 1st. Don’t be late!
If you do not book in advance,
you may arrive and be unable to
complete your planned programme. Our activities are booked on a
'first come, first served' basis, so
please start making your reservations from February 1st as soon as
you receive your programme
form. Don't be disappointed! We
suggest that you have your
programme request to us by
June 1st for a quick response
before arrival.
After checking in at Reception,
please come to the Programme
Office to finalise your activities
and bookings. For your convenience, most activities can be billed
directly to your final account.
Cancellation Fees
Bookings for activities and catering have penalty fees if you do not
give 48 hours notice of any changes. Please take care with your
reservations and remember that
every wasted space is a disappointed Scout. See page 34 for
more details.
Insurance
Please remember that the Alps
and mountain activities can be
dangerous. It is therefore your
responsibility to ensure that your
KANDERSTEG
INTERNATIONAL
SCOUT CENTRE
group is fully prepared for all the
activities that you intend to undertake, both in terms of fitness
and equipment. The Centre’s insurance does not cover you or
your group against accidents that
might occur during your stay.
Please check your insurance policy carefully and make sure that it
covers all rescue and medical
costs. It is essential that you have
full insurance cover. If you prefer,
we can arrange insurance cover,
additional to your own, to make
sure your cover is suitable for
Adventurous activities. Contact
us before arriving in Kandersteg
to organise this.
Equipment
Please look at our equipment lists
on pages 17 and 51. For the activities that we run you must have
the listed equipment. If you do
not have the correct equipment you will be unable to
take part in our activities.
Non-Guests
Our programme activities are
heavily subsidised by overnight
fees. Non-guests are welcomed to
arrange programme and equipment bookings in advance. A
surcharge of 10% or a minimum
SFr. 1.– per item is added to cover
costs.
Travel in
Switzerland
For information on Swiss train
offers, connect to the web site:
www.sbb.ch/pv/index_e.htm
Groups of over 25 people should
contact us for a coach offer. The
coach company we recommend
offers very competitive rates,
which are generally much cheaper
than the Swiss Rail Network.
Themes
Our programme is based on the
three themes of International
Friendship, High Adventure and
new for 2005 Eco Adventure.
We have awards based on these
themes as well as several other
awards. For more information on
these awards, look in the Awards
and Badges section. These
themes are a great way to get ideas and to help plan your programme.

WINTER
Kandersteg is magnificent in the
winter. During this time, we offer
a programme with activities ranging from sledding to caving and,
of course, all forms of fun in the
snow!
KANDERSTEG
INTERNATIONAL
SCOUT CENTRE
The Centre is situated in an
ideal location not far from several of Europe’s major ski resorts
and the village has two excellent
downhill ski areas and over 70 km
of cross country skiing.
If the weather is not so kind,
you can take part in more ‘sheltered’ activities which could be
anything from bowling ‘Swiss
style’ to caving deep in the Swiss
Alps.
For the evenings, or for when
you are looking for something a
little more relaxing, you can
choose from a variety of local activities. Maybe a trip to our Finnish sauna, or even cheering for
the local ice hockey team at the
ice rink.

Christmas
and New Year
Christmas and New Year is a
magical time in Kandersteg and
the Centre organises a special
programme for this week of festivities. We invite you all to join in
the fun and celebrations.
The special activities could include snow shoeing or curling, a crazy sledding competition on the illuminated sledge run or an evening of roasted chestnuts, hot
chocolate and songs around a
campfire. Then of course it is time
to party, party, party on December
31st! New Years Eve in Kandersteg
is a very unique and special experience. Guests who have booked
to stay at the Centre during this
time will receive further information about the week’s special programme. Of course, all our regular

Package
Ski Weeks
Evening
activities
If you are looking for an action
packed week of skiing, fun and
activities, then our Ski Weeks are
just for you! We offer a fully catered week, with accommodation in
either the Chalet or the Tower,
and various evening activities.
Our ski guides spend the week
helping you with your skiing and
ensuring that you have a great
time. Non skiers can join our winter activities week!
Our Ski Weeks are primarily aimed
at groups and families with
some or no knowledge of skiing.
Our ski guides will help skiers
throughout the week to improve
their technique and to ski safely on
the slopes, as well as organising
lunches and travel. As our
ski guides are not professionals, first time skiers or
boarders must have lessons with
the village ski school on the first
two mornings. This can make a
big difference in those crucial first
days. We can organise these lessons for you at a discounted price
of SFr. 25.–.
Winter
Activities Week
This exciting option combines the
best of hiking, skiing, sledding,
Scouting and enjoying Switzerland. It is available in any week
but must be specified before making your booking. Please see page

How to organise
activities in low season
Contact the Programme Office with
these details about your group:
how many people, what age range and
their interests. We will then be able to
give you ideas to choose from as well as
advice on creating your time table. This
way, we reduce stress on the leaders
and ensure that groups are aware of all
the opportunities on offer – as well as
those which are not possible due to
weather and availability of staff.
So, keep life easy and let us help you!
Many awards are possible to do in
low season, We are flexible and trust
leader discretion with all awards, if
you are happy that your Scouts have
been challenged, so are we!
See Awards section for more information on this.

Cut out the stress and expense of
trains and cars – use our coach
excursions for an easy and fun
day out. Kandersteg is perfectly
located as a base from which to
explore Switzerland. We have
created these tours to famous
cities or attractions and each tour
has a different character. We hope
that you will find one to suit your
group but, if not, then we are happy to help with alternative tours
for individual groups.
The coach will take you to your
destination and collect you later
at a set time and place – a guide
is not provided. You can decide
what to do when you reach your
destination and we are happy
to help you with ideas and brochures upon request.
We need at least 25 people to
run a coach trip. To help small
groups, each trip has a set day –
the idea is that you share a coach
together and therefore get over
25 people going – this helps you
to make friends too! If you have
a group of over 25 people
then we can book a tour on
any day for you. Prices are for
the coach only. When an extra fee
is essential to the tour then a price
has been given. However, prices
for the optional museums and at-

Activity
cancellation charges
During the year we have lots of groups wishing to do activities and, once an activity is booked, we have to turn other Scouts away from it. Occasionally, groups do not
let us know of changes or cancellations – leaving empty spaces and disappointed
Scouts. To help all our guests get the most from their stay, we charge a fee of
S F r. 5 . – p e r p e rs o n f o r a n a c t i v i t y o r
half the total price of a workshop
for any cancellation which does not give us 48 hours notice. This applies to all Centre activities advertised in KanderActive including those which are free of charge.
There is NO CHARGE if a person is sick or injured.
If the activity is not run by the Centre (e.g. river rafting, paragliding or mountain biking) then you may have to pay the FULL PRICE if you cancel too late, this is normal
Swiss practice.
Please plan a realistic programme. Remember the altitude and fitness requirements;
avoid over-tiredness and stress. The Programme Office is very happy to help you
with this. Thank you for your help in providing as many opportunities as possible
for our guests.
SUMMER
Summer in Kandersteg is often
described as a ‘Permanent Mini
Jamboree’, and with good reason
too! Where else can you share an
early morning breakfast with your
Italian neighbours before heading
off on a hike to a Swiss Alpine
Cheesery with some Germans and
Spanish? Then you can finish off
the evening with a huge International Campfire, with Scouts and
Guides from all over the world.
The Summer programme is
based on themes of InternatioKANDERSTEG
INTERNATIONAL
SCOUT CENTRE
nal Friendship, High Adventure
and Eco Adventure. These are designed to help you make new
friends and learn and experience
more about the exciting Alpine
environment around the Centre.
All themes have an award that
you can achieve while staying
here.
See the Awards and Badges
section.
Summer
36
We encourage you to use the
awards as a basis for your plan
of activities. For the requirements of the awards, please refer to the Awards and Badges
section.
We ask that all groups send
one or two leaders to the Leaders’ Gathering on Sunday evenings at 20.00, where information essential to a safe and a
pleasant stay is given. It is also
a good opportunity to meet
with leaders from other groups
and relax.
Many of the unguided activities
offered during the Summer season are generally available from
late Spring until early Autumn. If
you are visiting the Centre during
this time, contact us for more information.
ROUTE-CARD
Route Cards
Twinned Groups
The Alpine environment is one of
beauty, but it can also be one of
danger. In the interests of safety,
all groups going out hiking must
complete a Route Card. These are
available from the Programme Office in different languages, and
each group must register their intended route and a bad weather
alternative, if necessary, before
leaving on their hike. The completed Route Card must be handed in to a staff member in the
Programme Office, where it will
be displayed until a representative of the group comes to report
that everyone has safely returned.
If you have not reported back
from your hike within the given
time, we will begin necessary emergency procedures. If a mountain rescue team is called out on a false
alarm because a group has failed to
report that they have returned, the
group will have to pay the costs of
the team involved.
Get to know your fellow Scouts
from around the world a little better. We will twin you with a group
from another country and you can
then make contact with them and
organise some games, a meal together or even a hike. Take this
opportunity to help complete your
International Friendship Award
and discover the world – It’s up to
you! We may give your e-mail
address to a fellow scout
group so they can make
contact – please inform us if
this is not appropriate for
you.

Unguided
Hikes
We encourage all our groups to
plan an unguided hike during
their stay. There are lots of options
for routes, from very easy to challenging. The Swiss footpath system is easy to use and well kept,
so the difficulties of leadership
are minimised. We also have KISC
information sheets on various
routes, with details about altitude, timetable, interesting features and include a risk assessment. They will help you make
the most of your Alpine experience – using your hiking map too!
We recommend that all groups
buy a map before they arrive in order to plan properly. This costs SFr.
20.– and can be sent to you in advance. Contact us with the age,
experience, size of group and
amount of time you want to hike
and we will help create the best
possible experience. We can also
advise groups on multi day expeditions.
Accommodation
in the Alps
Camping is forbidden in Switzerland unless it is in a recognised
camping ground. Instead there are
8 local huts run by the Swiss Alpine Club. They are also part of the
KANDERSTEG
INTERNATIONAL
SCOUT CENTRE
Hüttentest award. We highly recommend this as an Alpine experience – in true Swiss style! You
need to book in advance through
the KISC Programme Office. You
can have catering or take simple
ingredients for the hut warden to
heat up for a fee. Blankets and a
pillow are provided for each person. Scouts get discounted rates
(not on Saturday nights) Carry
down all your rubbish. Pay cash direct to the hut warden – extra to
your KISC overnight fee.
Dawn Hike –

An unguided hike with several
routes which vary in difficulty and
are well sign-posted. For your
safety and enjoyment we ask you

each route. Please contact us for
more information.
Ueschinen Hütte
Maximum number: 30
Age: 10 years+
Cost: SFr. 10.– per person overnight.
The Scout Centre manages its
own high alpine hut in the Ueschinen valley. At 1890 m the hut
is an excellent base for hikes of
many different abilities. We have
lots of new unguided hikes information available to help you lead
your group. You can hike to the
hut in the afternoon, enjoy the
magnificent view over Kandersteg and surrounding mountains,
and stay in the hut. The next
morning participate in our Roter
Totz Hike via the foot of a small
glacier and a 2628 m pass (see
guided hikes information) or enjoy one of our unguided hikes.
The hut has mattresses, blankets and cooking facilities so all
you need to bring is your own
food or take Centre catering (just
bring some fresh produce to the
hut from our kitchen and the rest
will be supplied at the hut for you
to cook) – simple and easy!

The alpine environment can
sometimes be dangerous. You can
start a hike in sunshine in the
morning and by the afternoon it
can be raining or even snowing. It
is therefore essential that you and
all your group have the correct
equipment.
If you do not have what we
consider to be suitable equipment to take part in one of our
activities, then we regret you
will be unable to participate. This particularly applies
to guided activities.
