The GLOCK Report - Glock Sport Shooting Foundation
The GLOCK Report ® The Newsletter of the GLOCK Sport Shooting Foundation® Volume III, 2001 GLOCK Introduces Commemorative GSSF G17! The GSSF Engraved Commemorative GLOCK s long time GSSF members know (and new members, too, if you’ve been keeping up!), this year marks the 10th Anniversary of the GLOCK Sport Shooting Foundation. And what years they have been! We’ve had 50,000+ people involved over the years with the program, thousands shooting safely every year. GSSF has grown from a handful of matches per year, to a recognized shooting “discipline,” with over two dozen matches a year, people from other countries involved, and competitors of all descriptions participating. All of this has made all of us at GLOCK very pleased and grateful for our customers. To commemorate this year, GLOCK has manufactured a G17 with a rarely seen “extra” on GLOCK pistols: engraving. That’s right, as the highlighted (artificially enhanced) photographs show, this G17 is specially marked.* That’s the good news. The little bit of bad news is that this was a limited production run, with serial numbers beginning with “GSSF.” So, if you’re interested in a piece of shooting history, get your order form in now! There is a special price of only $398.00 US. Thanks again for your loyalty and support. In Memory of September11, 2001; “Remember, Do Not Forget.” n September 11th of this year, GLOCK employees around the world were first horrified, then deeply angered over the attacks on the United States. Truly, this day “the world changed.” As this goes to press, recovery and reconstruction work continue, and the United States Armed Forces and our allies are seeking and bringing to justice those responsible, and those who would assist evil. We would like to note here with sadness, but also pride, that one GSSF member made the ultimate sacrifice for his fellow citizens. New York City Police Officer Jerome Dominguez responded to the World Trade Center with hundreds of other emergency services personnel the morning of September 11th. He did not return. Your thoughts and prayers are requested for him, his fellow responders, the victims themselves and their loved ones. O The GLOCK Report® / Volume III, 2001 © GLOCK, 2001 WIN A GLOCK! Like a family reunion, the GLOCK “tribe” within USPSA/IPSC spent three full days sharing notes and shooting their GLOCKS to win positions all over the leader board. GLOCK page Ten USPSA/IPSC shooting pits a shooter’s speed and accuracy against a series of “stages” involving anywhere from three to 36 shots. Shooters must draw from a holster and move safely through the course, negotiating obstacles, reloading, and shooting at a wide range of paper and steel targets on the way—all under pressure from the clock. There are no alibi’s for gun malfunctions, and every second counts. To do well here, you need a reliable, accurate gun. As you might expect, for many shooters, that gun is a GLOCK! Knock-down steel targets, moving targets, disappearing targets, and targets as far away as 40 yards tested the competitors’ skills. The physical challenges involved negotiating false-fronted buildings, plywood cars, lawn chairs, haybales, even a bed! All shooting is done outdoors, rain or shine, putting even greater demands on the shooter and their equipment. This year’s match involved 20 stages, consuming more than 300 rounds. GLOCK has been a part of practical shooting for years and is a big supporter of both Limited Division and the new Production Division (where only out-ofthe-box double-action and safe-action handguns may be used). Shooters like Armando Valdes and Debbie © GLOCK, 2001 The GLOCK Report® / Volume III, 2001 platform this year, and some 10 percent of the shooters in the main match also chose GLOCK. GSSF shooter David Sevigny won USPSA’s new “Production Division” outright with his G34. Sharon Zaffiro from GLOCK,Inc. took high lady in Production, and seventh lady overall in the main match—a grand achievement given the “Production Division’s” strict requirements. (Zaffiro was competing with a stock G34, 10-round magazines, and lower-scoring ammunition against women with custom guns and high-capacity magazines carrying up to 20 rounds each!) Debbie Ross used her custom G35 to place sixth in the main match. GSSF Benefit/Demo: Ross regularly finish in the highest ranks of men and women in practical shooting events, relying solely on their GLOCK pistols. More than half of the shooters competing in Production Division used the GLOCK GSSF had planned to run a demonstration match conjointly with the USPSA nationals as part of a promotional effort. Following the tragedy of Sept. 11, USPSA’s match was nearly canceled. When the decision to proceed was made, GSSF coordinators Chris Edwards and Scott Gilbertson converted their demonstration match into a benefit match for the families of police and firefighters who lost their lives in the World Trade Center. USPSA shooters queued up to help bereaved New Yorkers, and experienced GSSF shooting at the same time. If you own a GLOCK pistol and a holster, you have everything you need to try USPSA/IPSC shooting. For more information about USPSA/IPSC go to www.USPSA.org or call (360) 855-2245. Double Champion for the 21st Century s many of you are aware, a number of champions have shot their way into the winners circle in a number of shooting disciplines using various GLOCK models. The great Armando Valdes began with a G17L, claiming a world championship title, and confounded other competitors with a G24 and then a G22. Just a few short years David Sevigny ago, GLOCKs nearly swept all the classes at the American Handgunner World Shootoff Championships. Ms. Debbie Ross has distinguished herself at the World and National levels with her GLOCKs. And now, seemingly from out of nowhere, a young man from Connecticut has put himself in the history books with two National Championship A The GLOCK Report® / Volume III, 2001 wins within the space of a few weeks. Mr. David Sevigny has once again shown the accuracy and reliability of GLOCK pistols by first capturing the Production Class (and 2nd overall with a stage win) at the 2001 USPSA/IPSC Limited National Championships. David used a G34 to pull ahead of literally hundreds of competitors, most of whom had expensive, highly customized pistols. His G34 was “box stock.” Just two weeks later, using the same G34, he secured the IDPA National Championship (Stock Service Pistol) with the low overall time for the entire match. Congratulations, Dave! We wish you many more wins with your GLOCK to go along with your 70+ club wins and your 18 State, Regional and National Titles. Other champions were also present and wrote their names on the championship lists with their GLOCKs. Ms. Sara Dunevin of Arizona is this year’s Ladies © GLOCK, 2001 (Continued on page 12) page Eleven (Continued from page 11) National Champion of the IDPA, using a G17 with over 85,000 documented rounds through it. Mr. Yutaka Yokomachi was the High International competitor at the same match. He used a G22 swiftly and accurately. Our congratulations to these fine competitors. Finally, in the shooting of steel targets, where accuracy is crucial, speed paramount, and an equipment bobble disastrous, two competitors using GLOCKs placed 1st and 2nd at the Steel Challenge for 2001. Our congratulations to Justin Pettitt and Matt Kartozian. GLOCK RULES! David Sevigny Walt Rauch page Twelve © GLOCK, 2001 The GLOCK Report® / Volume III, 2001 Member’s Corner Volume II, 2001 Pistol Giveaway Winner I ’m sure you all know of the events in New York City last week, and it is with deep sorrow that I’m writing this. Jerome Dominguez is a friend of mine, and as a member of NYPD’s Emergency Services Unit, he was among the first to respond to the World Trade Center attack. There were Jerome Dominguez numerous people trapped (pictured) above the crashes who needed to be rescued and without hesitation Jerome and other members of the service entered the South Tower to begin the rescue effort. Shortly after this, with America watching, the South Tower collapsed, likely killing all those inside. Jerome was a member of GSSF and about 5 weeks prior to the attack he had won First L.E. B class in West Hampton, NY. He was very excited and proud to have won, and he looked forward to his prize. I am asking that in the next GLOCK Report or GLOCK Annual you mention Jerome and his sacrifice to let the other members know how deeply this has touched us all. Thank you for your consideration. year. This time to also shoot the major-sub category with a new G30. Thank you for a great match as well as an excellent firearm. W. M. Washington State An Easy Excavation t the beginning of June, I had called my father down to help me put in a sump pump, as I found that I had a large puddle of water accumulating under my house. Prior to going under the house to start digging the hole necessary for the sump pump, Dad and I began talking about the Oregon State GSSF Match that I had just completed the weekend before in Roseburg. My Dad then asked me if I had all the tools ready for our little “excavation,”— I told him I did. I showed him the hand trowel that I had planned on using, as there is approximately only two feet of space to dig under the house— absolutely not enough room to use a full size shovel. The dirt under the house is a very heavy clay and large rock combination, and as I looked at the hand trowel I knew it was going to be a long, difficult morning. A G. H. New York A Surprised Winner n July 22, I attended the GSSF match at Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Having little experience with timed matches, I planned to just shoot my best and learn from the experience. The GLOCK staff were helpful and provided some good tips on shooting, as well as a safety review. After shooting the match I went to see the armorers. They checked out my G19, informed me it had an 8 lb disconnect, replaced it with a standard one as well as upgrading the gun with other new parts. The cost for this service was nothing, thank you very much. The G19 now shoots better for me but my G22 is still my favorite and I shoot it best (bench rest groups under 2" at 25 yards are my norm). Last week I was surprised to receive notice that I had won a GLOCK for Class “B” Category. Well, my order is in the mail and you can bet I will be back next O The GLOCK Report® / Volume III, 2001 Then I remembered the trusty GLOCK entrenching tool that I carry in my pickup for emergencies—it was perfect for this situation! After we finished the digging, I grabbed my camera and took this photo of Dad holding the entrenching tool under the house. “GLOCK Perfection” applies to everything that GLOCK puts its name on, not just pistols. By using GLOCK’s entrenching tool I probably saved several hours and a lot of four-letter words. P. C. Oregon © GLOCK, 2001 page Thirteen Member’s Corner The Best in 80 Years would like to enter the next Pistol Give-Away, and also tell you and anyone who is interested, I am now 80+ years old. I have shot a lot of different handguns in my life, from the cheapest to the high dollar weapons, some that are supposed to be the best on the market. I saw my first GLOCK, a G17, when they first came out. It was in a store I worked in part time—when I saw it in the showcase,I considered it to be a plastic toy. But curiosity got the best of me. I took it to the range and tried it, field stripped it, etc. Then I gave it some tests to see if it would really do what the reports said it would do. It did, and more. I have carried and used GLOCKs ever since, and continue testing other weapons. I have found nothing yet that will beat the GLOCK models I now have: a G21,two G22s, a G23 and a G27. I have owned G19, G17, and G30 models and have never had a problem with one. I try to shoot once a month even now and with GLOCKs, I am more accurate than any of the other makes. I just don’t believe they can beat the GLOCKs. I know they haven’t yet. I W. W. Florida hen I began competitive shooting in the late 80s, I started with a stainless Colt 1911. With the rosewood grips I got a lot of compliments on how good it looked. It shot well too, with only the occasional fumble. About a year later a fellow shooter announced that he was selling his G22 in order to help finance a new 1911 race gun. After several negative comments, such as “That’s a plastic gun, it will never last,” and “Man, that is one ugly pistol,” the crowd dispersed and I got close enough to check it out. I had heard of them, but never had seen one in person. I didn’t think it was ugly, in fact it had a charm all its own and looked W ithout going into too much detail, when I lost my favorite large frame S&W last August, I decided that I would research the market and find the best handgun available —the most durabilility at the best price. However, I knew that my next purchase would have to suit my wife as well, as she had never fired a handgun before. Polymers did not really bother me. Being a grunt in the Marines taught me the value of plastics, aluminum and alloy products to lighten the load. page Fourteen P. P. Georgia Finders, Keepers My Wife’s Having All the Fun! W When I narrowed it down to the two handguns that were affordable, the choices were semi-autos, and I knew that the best defense weapon for my inexperienced wife would probably still be a durable 38 Special revolver. After several months of going to the range every week, she really started to enjoy herself. I was amazed at her natural ability. From the start she actually shot 12" to 14" groups, which made working with her very easy. My wife says “One of the nice parts about shooting is that even when you make mistakes, if you are consistent, someone can always help you get better.” I got tired of watching her have all the fun and decided to purchase my first G22, one of my original choices. I was amazed at the accuracy, low recoil and ease of maintenance. I fell in love with it immediately. Marines do like their weapons, you know! One day, after shooting about 200 rounds I relinquished control of the G22 to my wife. After explaining that the dynamics are a little different in the handling of the weapon, she was ready to go. At first it was awkward for her, as she has very small hands but once I felt comfortable that she could handle the G22, I slapped a 10 rounder in and stood back. I told her to shoot at the trademark at the bottom of the target because I didn’t feel like reeling it in and dealing with the pasties. I couldn’t believe my eyes. She just about cleaned the trademark off at 25 feet. We immediately went into the showroom, asked the owner to lay out all the .40 S&W that they had and walked out with a G23. Being stuck with the revolver is OK; good guns will always be good guns, but we carry and shoot our GLOCKs regularly. We are both impressed with the extremely high quality and dependability of these products. As a former Marine, I could not be happier with a firearm. As for my wife, well my guess is that she’ll be outshooting me in no time. © GLOCK, 2001 The GLOCK Report® / Volume III, 2001 efficient. I picked it up and it fit my hand perfectly. The seller, needing the cash, threw in a lot of extras to seal the deal so I went ahead and bought it. As it turned out I am still very happy today that I did. The first thing I instantly loved about my G22 was that there is no thumb safety to fumble with. Just point and shoot, like a revolver, but with a much better trigger. The second thing I loved about it was the ease with which tight groups could be shot very quickly. It is common to have both bullet holes right next to each other on the targets, sometimes touching! The third thing I loved about it was how easy maintenance is. Breaking the pistol down is a joy compared to a 1911. Finally, the last thing I love about my G22 took some time to reveal itself. Match after match it never, ever jammed. It goes bang every time I pull the trigger. It gives me a chuckle to see the shooters of the competition’s pistols jam or misfire. I always recommend a GLOCK to them! I will never forget when the guy who sold me my first GLOCK brought his new 1911 race gun to the match. It wasn’t long before it jammed and the magazine flew out of the gun, hit the ground and ejected all the cartridges into the air. Some months later he asked to buy the G22 back…ha!…not a chance! GLOCK’s excellence has silenced any prejudices against it. Now there are lots of GLOCKs at the matches and I have yet to see one fail. While some may think they are not pretty, if you want a gun that runs right out of the box, make it a GLOCK! M. B. Virginia Our first GSSF match was in Jackson, New Jersey. The match was run to perfection. In all my years of shooting, I have never had so much help from the Range Officers. As you can see from the enclosed photo, it was raining very hard. J. S. New York State WOWed by GSSF ne word sums up my first experience at a GSSF match—WOW! I participated in the GSSF match in Roseburg, OR on June 3-4, 2001 and had a great time. This was my first shooting competition of any kind, and I admit that I was a little nervous because I didn’t know what to expect. When I got there, though, I quickly became comfortable with everything that was going on, due to the helpfulness of the staff running the match. I found that the GSSF matches are great places to get started in shooting competition. They are well organized, competitive, challenging, fun and most importantly, safe. I was impressed with the level of safety stressed at the match I attended. For entry level to advanced shooters, GSSF matches are a great experience. If you are not a GLOCK shooter you owe it to yourself to get a GLOCK, join the GSSF and shoot in a match. I am going to keep practicing to improve my scores, but more importantly, I am going to keep shooting in the GSSF competitions to be around other shooters and GLOCK owners who want to have a safe, fun time and appreciate a high quality pistol. I can’t wait until the next GSSF match in my area, and I guess the only real complaint I have to lodge against GSSF is that they don’t have matches every weekend year around in my neck of the woods. Again, thanks GLOCK and GSSF, for a superior gun and a great sport shooting organization. O B. C. Washington State Dad Got His GLOCK recently obtained my concealed carry permit and joined a pistol club. My oldest son is an explorer scout and in the criminal justice program at his high school. He and I took the basic class together, and since he was going to work in law enforcement he said, “Dad, get a GLOCK!” After examining firearms in gun stores and reading article after article, I had to agree with him. We now shoot a G17 and my youngest wants to join the club as well—we will need more GLOCKs in the family. You folks at GLOCK would be proud of the glow of enthusiasm on my son’s face when he shoots the G17—thanks for your fine product. I Welcome to GLOCK am a happy G17 owner. My friend introduced me to his G17 and after shooting his, I knew I had to own one. He is a master and what he can do with his, I hope to do someday with mine. I The GLOCK Report® / Volume III, 2001 F. B. Florida © GLOCK, 2001 page Fifteen Member’s Corner Come Rain or Shine have been involved in law enforcement and military shooting and training for several years. During that time I have shot with many fine shooters who used a variety of pistols. I have never seen a pistol that I trust like my GLOCKs. I’ve shot in the rain with the pistol lying on sandbags during down time. The wet sand made the other shooters hesitant to put down their pistols and they eventually went home, but I kept shooting and had no fear of jamming. I’ve been on the line with others as we waited for a malfunctioning name brand to be put back in working order, but my GLOCK never slowed down the line of shooters. As a bike patrol officer I went down on the asphalt on my gun side, slid about 50 feet and had a bad case of road rash. My GLOCK had a few nicks that buffed out, and it was good as new long before I was! I I have been privileged to shoot IPSC and IDPA with some extraordinary shooters. I never felt embarrassed to draw my $500 GLOCK next to their $3000 gun. I wasn’t worried about mine getting dirty and I knew my GLOCK would be back in my waistband on the ride home, not locked in a case awaiting more “tuning.” On duty, I’ve dropped my GLOCKs more than once (don’t tell my Sgt.). I just picked it up, dusted it off and kept going. Not worrying about loose sights, scratches or nicks in $100 wood grips is far more important to me than having the latest “Hollywood” cool gun. I’ve found that the .40s can shoot better than I can and it is a comfort to know that things are going to go where I want them, time after time despite rain, sand or asphalt. I want to thank GLOCK for giving me a weapon that I stake my life on. Every day. Stay safe. G. D. Nevada page Sixteen All I Want for My Birthday Is… am writing this letter to express my feeling about your product. I am employed with the California Department of Corrections Fire Department in Coalinga, California. I have been in the Fire Service for over 25 years, six of them with CDC. I own a G23. I bought it about four years ago and carry it along with my concealed weapons permit. I enjoy the accuracy I have achieved with the .40 caliber. I also enjoy the feeling of security I get knowing that when my family and I take trips to the coast or mountains, I have the reliability of a GLOCK with me. I recently joined GSSF. I am looking forward to going to a match in Bakersfield this month. I plan to enter and hope to win, but I would be satisfied just to socialize with others who appreciate the high quality and reliability of your product. I shoot at a couple of ranges with my wife and a good friend. We spend time each month enjoying the great outdoors and good company of others who take gun safety and self-protection seriously. My wife is getting pretty good. I also enjoy the ease of maintenance of your product. After the time spent at the firing line, I appreciate the simplicity of cleaning and reassembly of my GLOCK. Gun safety has always been a #1 priority and I make my family’s safety and security a #1 priority also. I am a little apprehensive about the Bakersfield match, but considering the great fun I have shooting the G23, I am sure this fine product and my shooting skills will carry me through. I have been eyeing the new .45 Subcompact in your magazine — it has my name on it. I have been dropping hints to my wife like crazy. I have a birthday coming up this February and it would make a great present. All she has to do is add a box of shells and a bow. I am a GLOCK devotee and I look forward to years of enjoyment with your product. Thank you for the opportunity to shoot such a fine handgun. I’m looking forward to the .45. I have been visiting your website—I want to purchase a GLOCK hat and pin and find out more about GSSF. Keep up the good work! I P. E. R. California Now I’m Having Fun never thought of competition shooting as fun. I have watched my husband compete in an IDPA match and I did not like the fast paced environment. I have shot a couple of matches for fun at our local shooting range, but never dreamed of entering a competition! My husband was attending his first GSSF match in St. I © GLOCK, 2001 The GLOCK Report® / Volume III, 2001 Paul, MN, so I decided to go along and watch. However, on the drive up, he convinced me to shoot the match. I was very nervous and unsure of my decision to compete. I borrowed a friend’s gun to compete, since I do not have my own and I was off to the first course. I started shooting the plates and was missing quite a few. I was nervous and this was a gun I had never shot before. The range officers, sensing I was nervous started yelling “high” or “low,” letting me know where I was hitting. I thought this was wonderful and it really helped break the silence. I made it through the match and I am anxiously awaiting the next one! It was a great time. Thanks, GSSF, for changing my mind about competition shooting! Thanks again to all the range officers and GSSF members for making this a great event for me! T. W. Nebraska A Great GLOCK Team t has been a week since I traveled five hours one way to compete in the Shelton, WA match, and I am still reliving all the stages in my mind to see where I could have done better. I enjoy the matches and the format so much that the travel time is only a minor inconvenience. I competed in the local match here in Roseburg, but I just can’t seem to get enough of the matches, so I travel to the Shelton match every year as well. In fact my enthusiasm has converted two non-GLOCK shooters this year to full-time GLOCK shooters, GLOCK owners, and GLOCK competitors!!! My two buddies had never shot a GLOCK until they met me, and now because of my enthusiasm and “obsession,” we have formed a team that practices regularly and promotes the shooting sports. As a team we have made some pretty ambitious plans to compete in the Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Piru, California matches next year. Among the three of us we own eight GLOCKs and compete with all of them. It is because of the GLOCK family that we have developed our friendships and enjoyed a lifetime supply of camaraderie. We like to think that we form a group of conscientious guys who promote safety first and fun second. With that thought in mind, we are very impressed with the professional way in which the matches are conducted and the positive atmosphere that is generated. Your staff members are consummate professionals and are always very helpful. We would like to take this opportunity to thank GLOCK and the entire GSSF staff for making the matches safe, fun and enjoyable experiences for the whole family! I P. T. Oregon events of September 11, so I appreciate the confidence that the reliability of the G19 gives me. Unlike many of your other correspondents, I do not want to knock another handgun brand or model in order to sing the praises of GLOCK. GLOCK stands on its own merits as a great gun without any of that nonsense. As a matter of fact, my love for the Colt 1911, which started back during my service with the 82nd Airborne, turned me on to the GLOCK. That’s right—the simple, reliable and robust Colt .45 ACP converted me from duty revolvers to the GLOCK. Both weapons adhere to the K.I.S.S. principle of design and operation. The GLOCK has the advantage of a simpler manual of arms and fewer parts, but both weapons break down easily and require little maintenance compared to other handguns. Before I realized this, I did not want to convert from my 38 Special revolver to the G19 for duty carry. I handled the GLOCK, stripped it down, talked to those who carried it and I was sold. It is a great gun and the perfect envelope for the cartridge it fires. I’ll stake my life on it! In closing, I’d like to say that I love my GLOCK and do believe that if John Browning were alive today, he and Gaston Glock would be getting along just fine! B. G. New York State Disappointed Junior ack in June, I took my 16 year old grandson, who has been shooting handguns for over four years, to the GSSF match in Fulton, NY. He was not allowed to compete in the match due to a new law which prohibits anyone under eighteen years of age (unless they have a valid NYS pistol permit) from handling or shooting any handgun. About two weeks ago I took him with me to the GLOCK match in Harvard, MA. He was allowed to compete there, under the strict supervision of the range officers. Safety is always uppermost at all of the GLOCK matches. We just looked at the results on the GSSF web site. There were 119 competitors in the amateur class that he competed in. He finished in 55th place—taking High Junior honors, beating 64 other shooters. He was ecstatic, and is looking forward to going to Topton, PA, and other states to compete in the GSSF matches with me. Not to be outdone, I finished in eighth place, taking High Senior honors—my best finish so far in the many GLOCK matches I have competed in. Many thanks to GSSF for promoting the shooting sports for all competitors. B F. C.
