INTERNATIONAL ICE CARVING COMPETITION January 23 to 25, 2015 Edmonton, Alberta, Canada 1st Place Winner 2014, To the Top of the Olympic Mountains by Alexey Andreev & Egor Stepanov from the Republic of Sakha, Russia International Ice Carving Competition The 12th annual Ice on Whyte Festival takes place in the Old Strathcona area of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada from January 23 to February 1, 2015. The International Ice Carving Competition kicks off the festival from January 23 to 25 and artists from around the world are invited to participate in the competition. The competition begins on Friday at 7 am and ends on Sunday at noon. Sculptures will be judged on Sunday, January 25 and awards are presented at approximately 4 pm. This year 10 two-person teams are invited to compete in the Professional Category and 5 two-person teams are invited to participate in the Novice Category. Your participation will be confirmed by December 15, 2014. Complete the online application and submit a sketch by December 14, 2014. Participants must be at least 18 years old to enter the competition. New applicants must include a summary of ice carving experience, list of awards from other competitions and a photo of previous ice carving. Teams in the Professional Category will be selected based on previous ice carving experience, their application sketch for the 2014 competition and past participation. A final sketch (if changed from application) must be submitted to the lead judge at the orientation on January 22. Artists must attend the orientation on January 22 at 7:30 pm (dinner will be provided). A lottery draw at the orientation will determine your sculpture location in the carving area. Carvers must supply their own tools and equipment. Access will be given to one 120V 15-amp outlet (North American Standard) . Electric chains saws may be requested by international competitors on the application form. Carvers may use only one electrical tool at a time. Each competitor must follow all Ice on Whyte Festival participation guidelines and NCC rules as administered by the judges. Safety First! In order to ensure the safety of all participants, health and safety measures are applicable. No helpers are allowed in the carving area unless approved by a judge. All allocated blocks of ice must be used and carved on all sides. Snow made from your original allotment of ice may be used, no artificial props, decoration or colouring of ice is allowed. No sponsor logos or material may be displayed in the carving area or on the sculptures except sponsor identification on clothing. Organizers reserve the right to disqualify carvers who produce sculptures that are considered to be in poor taste or commercial in character. Artists must remove all tools, cardboard, extra ice and debris from their allocated carving area at the end of every competition day and ensure that the carving is ready for judging at the end of the competition. The Festival’s site staff will be available to assist with cardboard, ice and debris removal. Competition organizers are not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen tools and equipment. The captain of your team may be asked to serve as a judge of the Novice Category. If selected, the captain agrees to accept and fulfill that responsibility. A short training session will be provided at the orientation. Safety First In order to ensure the safety of all participants, health and safety measures are applicable for this event. Artists must wear personal protective equipment. Safety boots, pants or chaps with ballistic nylon inserts, chainsaw gloves, hearing protection, protective eyewear and any other relevant health and safety equipment are strongly recommended. The judges are aware of the importance of health and safety at this event and, should a lack of personal protective equipment or dangerous work methods be noted, they will issue warnings which may result in point reduction or disqualification. Three experienced judges will judge the sculptures according to the criteria below established by the Winterlude Crystal Garden competition. The judging will be by consensus as each team of judges will discuss the scores of each sculpture. The sculptures must remain standing until the judging process is complete and this may take up to 3 hours. The Novice Category will be judged by 2 Professional Category captains selected by the festival organizers. Release of Liability I hereby release and forever discharge the Ice on Whyte Festival, its employees, officers, directors, agents, volunteers, its members or any other person for whom the Ice on Whyte Festival is responsible from any and all liability for any injury (including death) and/or property damage that I could sustain arising out of or in relation to my participation in the Ice on Whyte Festival International Ice Carving Competition. Waiver I hereby waive any right I have to make any demand or claim and to commence any action or lawsuit against the Ice on Whyte Festival for any injury (including death) and/or property damage that I could sustain arising out of or in relation to my participation in the Ice on Whyte Festival International Ice Carving Competition. I further waive any right I might have to make any demand or claim and to commence any action or lawsuit against any other person or corporation who might, in turn make a demand or claim or commence any action against the Ice on Whyte Festival. Permission Regarding Photographs, Images, Video and Media I hereby grant to the Ice on Whyte Festival and those authorized on their behalf, the right and unrestricted and perpetual permission, in repost of pictures of film footage that they, through their photographers and/or contractors and/or other participants in the Ice on Whyte Festival International Ice Carving Competition, have taken of me or in which I may be included with others during my participation in the competition and/or of the sculpture I have created, and in respect of comments I have made or written in my participation the competition, to use, to publish or broadcast and/or to authorize a third party to use, publish or broadcast the same in whole or in part in any and all media and for any purpose whatsoever, to alter said picture and footage and to use my name in connection therewith if the Ice on Whyte Festival so choose. Furthermore, I grant to the Ice on Whyte Festival and those authorized on their behalf, the right and permission to use all or part of the personal information that I provide, for the purpose of publishing a biography of myself and/or my work. The Ice on Whyte Festival has my consent to use, publish and broadcast all or part of such information in all media formats for promotional purposes and communication to the public. I hereby release and discharge the Ice on Whyte Festival from any and all claims and demands arising out of or in connection with the use of photographs, personal information, film footage or comments, including without limitation, any and all claims for libel or invasions of privacy. Consent I declare that I have read and understood this document in its entirety and consent to the foregoing. This document shall be binding upon me and my heirs, legal representatives and assigns.
