2012 Annual Report - Hands On Hartford
We are Hartford....and so are you Annual Report 2012 A Message from the CEO & Board Chair Dear Friends, 2012 was year of partnerships, a year of togetherness, and a year in which we celebrated our rich history. For 45 years, we have focused on the transformative power of community. At the very center of our mission, our reason for being, is the idea that all of us in the greater Hartford area are part of a single community. We are all strengthened, and all of our lives are improved, when we work together to support each other. By joining us, you were an integral part of this journey. Last year, we accomplished so much together: • You helped to transform an old-style food pantry into a full shopping model Community Pantry serving 400 households a month • You fought hunger in our community by joining with us in Foodshare’s Walk Against Hunger • You participated in our single largest service project to date—engaging more than 300 volunteers • You enabled those we serve to be heard in new ways by helping us launch the Faces of Homelessness Speakers’ Bureau Underlying all of our programs is the strong community we build together: taking care of each other, improving each other’s lives, and making a positive difference in the world around us. That attitude of mutuality is what we’re all about, and you’ve supported us so much in these efforts. That is why we say wholeheartedly: We made a difference, and so did you. We changed lives, and so did you. We are Hartford, and so are you. Warmest Regards, Barbara A. Shaw Executive Director Karen Bailey-Francois Chair of the Board of Directors 2 Mission & Vision Our Mission Hands On Hartford, in partnership with others, strengthens community in Hartford by responding faithfully to people in need through programs that change lives and renew human possibility. Our Vision Hands On Hartford provides direct services to people in need by promoting community engagement and volunteerism. Our vision is to bring agencies, volunteers, congregations, community organizations, donors and businesses together to make a significant impact on our community. Our History At our Volunteer Appreciation Event in April of 2012, we recognized the 11 congregations that helped found Center City Churches 45 years ago. We’d like to once again recognize those entities, without whom we could not have helped so many and for so long. Over the years, the agency created Connecticut’s first supportive housing program for people living with AIDS; Hartford’s first and only group home for adults who are mentally ill; Hartford’s first soup kitchen; Hartford’s only fuel assistance program for the working poor; Connecticut’s first and Hartford’s only weekend senior nutrition program; and, Hartford’s most comprehensive after-school tutoring and arts education program for elementary school children. Special thanks to these Hartford churches: Center Church (First Church of Christ Hartford), Central Baptist Church, Christ Church Cathedral, Church of the Good Shepherd, Emanuel Lutheran Church, First Presbyterian Church, Metropolitan Community Church, South Congregational Church, St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Unitarian Society of Hartford, and United Methodist Church. Center Church Metropolitan Community Church 3 Peter’s Retreat We are neighbors...and so are you There is no such thing as “one-size fits all” for supportive housing. At all three Peter’s Retreat housing programs, we meet individuals and families where they are in life. The Peter’s Retreat programs provide individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS and housing instability with a home. But it’s so much more than that. Some may define success by the numbers: • All of 100% of congregate and scattered-site participants achieved success in more than two life goals, such as education, benefits, family re-unification, employment, health, and harm-reduction/ relapse prevention. • 100% of participants in all programs reestablished and maintained vital medical and medication supports. • Our congregate program received a 100% rating from AIDS CT (formerly Connecticut AIDS Resource Coalition) in their annual service, administrative, fiscal and health/safety review. But we see success in the faces we see every day: We see success in the dozens of men and women who are now able to manage their illness and live healthier lives at our shared residence. With help from caring and dedicated staff, for nearly 20 years, this site has been giving many the stability they need to gain independence, get healthier, and move on to their own apartments. “I would be sleeping on the streets or dead without this program” -Tenant from Off-site program We see success in the eyes of men and women who now have their own apartments through our scattered-site program after years of unstable housing. Through home visits with case managers, individuals in this program can get the amount of support that’s right for them in order to maintain housing and a happy life. We see success in the parents in our family scattered-site program who are now providing more stable and safer, healthier lives for their children. Because families have unique needs and goals, these are addressed through individualized supports given by case managers, whether that’s getting connected to vital social services or helping with career plans . Beyond Peter’s Retreat: Expanding Supportive Housing S tarting in the summer of 2012, Hands On Hartford began to expand housing services beyond the Peter’s Retreat program, and beyond just those living with HIV/AIDS. Staff now provides supportive services for George Beach Home, a Hartford apartment building for individuals with limited finances in addition to some with special physical and/or emotional needs. Services provided include linkages and referrals to social and state service agencies in the community as well as supportive interactions when on site. 4 Family School Connection We are family...and so are you Family School Connection helps parents of children at Betances Early Reading Lab School create a better learning environment for their children. Learning can be fun! With issues such as truancy, lack of language comprehension, and unstable housing, many kids in Hartford are struggling. Our home visitors meet one-on-one with parents to guide them to the best ways to address these concerns. Many of these parents are juggling issues with housing, health concerns, and the looming fear of running out of food. Add in troubles with school, and it can be an overwhelming prospect. By helping with parenting skill-building and providing case management, referrals, and other linkages to services, home visitors address the overall well-being of the family. In 2012, 59 families participated and 97 children benefitted from the program. Family School Connection is offered in partnership with the Children’s Trust Fund, a division of the State of Connecticut Department of Social Services FSC Clinical Supervisor Pat Porteous shows off her ice cream churning skills Through several family fun days, kids learned new skills while having a blast! These activities not only provide a free day of entertainment for the kids, but also create a supportive environment for parents in the program. In 2012, parents and kids participated in activities at Camp Asto Wamah, and the Bushnell Park Carousel, in addition to enjoying a puppet show and ice cream making. Toy Shoppe Annual Family Holiday Party Every year, HOH hosts our Toy Shoppe Holiday Family Party for families we serve. At this festive event, parents “shop” for toys free of charge while their children have fun in the party room enjoying music, crafts and food and pictures with Santa! This year, over 400 people joined us for this celebration. Thanks to all who made it possible including: Avon Old Farms School, Aetna, Salute, Guida’s Dairy, Panera and Dunkin Donuts! 5 MANNA We are more than meals...and so are you MANNA programs are generally referred to as our “basic needs” services. While we do provide groceries, hot meals, toiletries, and basic case management services, there is something just as important that is integral to these programs: respect. It’s harder to quantify, but easy to recognize. Whether it’s a family that “shops” at our new full choice shopping model Food Pantry, or a guest who eats lunch at our soup kitchen, the dignity of our clients is at the forefront of our programming. Senior Community Café: a home-delivered and congregate meal program for senior citizens and disabled individuals in two Hartford apartment buildings. This program is funded in part with Community Development Block Grant funds allocated to Hands On Hartford by the City of Hartford as well as support from the North Central Area Agency on Aging. Community Meals: our soup kitchen, located in downtown Hartford at Christ Church Cathedral. Community Pantry and Assistance & Advocacy: Our full-choice shopping model food pantry with additional case management and referral services, located at South Congregational Church. (See more about recent updates to this program on the next page.) Backpack Nutrition Program: Serving backpacks of nutritious, easily-prepared food to kids in need every weekend. The equivalent of an additional classroom full of kids are now being provided with backpacks each weekend, bringing the total up to 275 children. “Community Meals is the utmost best place to have a meal…I enjoy coming here to be with people I’ve known for years” -Guest at our soup kitchen MANNA by the Numbers 36,543 meals served at Community Meals 95,531 pounds of groceries given 12,810 meals delivered to home-bound seniors 7,972 backpacks of food provided to kids A smiling face a happy place such is what MANNA offers you. A hearty meal to taste buds appeal a meal that will more than do. -from “Weary/Hungry,” poem by Justin Sweetwater 6 Appetite for Change Changing Lives: One dozen eggs at a time The Initiative In Early 2012, we embarked on a brand new initiative, one that would change how our MANNA food pantry would operate forever. The program, which is much-loved by clients and volunteers alike was serving an average of 300 households each month, but the waiting list was growing. It was also still using a less than ideal partial choice model. It was clear: the process needed to change. However, $60,000 was needed to complete the project, a daunting amount. Because the food pantry receives no state or federal funding, we knew this would need to be done with help from the community. Partial choice model: Participants are given a bit of choice about what they will receive, but most items are prepackaged in a grocery bag. After a summer full of fundraising, gatherings, grant *Accomodates one person per requests and outreach more and more people got involved. 15 minute time slot The amount of support was astounding; it seemed that all around Connecticut, people had an Appetite for Change. Schools ran food drives, congregations The full-choice shopping donated funds, and corporations and other organizations sponsored the initiative. model: Set up like a miniThis full choice model pantry could now become a reality. supermarket, participants Opening Day When the doors of our new MANNA Community Pantry opened on September 27th, we were excited to say the least. After months of renovations and dreaming of what “could be” for all of the households who use the pantry, we opened the doors to the first few families. choose what they would like right off of the shelves. *Accomodates 3-4 people per 15 minute time slot The reception to the space’s new look and model were overwhelmingly positive. One of the first women to walk in and use the pantry was amazed by the changes. The first thing she noticed: not the new flooring, not the cute green shopping carts, it was the refrigerator full of half gallons of milk and dozens of eggs. She was brought to tears by the mere sight of it all: something seemingly simple made all the difference in the world. Dedication & Celebration of the MANNA Community Pantry On November 8th, we were pleased to hold a special event in which we presented the newly remodeled pantry to all of the friends and supporters of the program who did so much to help transform it. 7 Community Engagement We are partners...and so are you As the saying goes, “it takes many hands”. We certainly take that motto to heart every day at our Community Engagement program. Since the very beginning, we have believed in the power of community to invoke change. Every day, volunteers from corporations, congregations and schools donate their time and talent at our programs. 2,500 volunteers participated in 2012, providing over 16,000 hours of service 52 customized service projects in 2012 with over a dozen community partners It’s a glorious sight to see people from all over CT (and beyond) get together to work on a project or simply spend time with those we serve. Community Engagement is woven into every one of our programs. Volunteering with Hands On Hartford breaks down barriers, it changes lives, it makes a difference. “I love HOH...I understand why what I am doing is important to the community” - an HOH volunteer Some of what you did in 2012! • Painted walls of homeless shelters • Packed thousands of backpacks full of food for kids • Cleaned up Hartford parks • Renovated a food pantry A Voice in the Community I n late fall of 2012, we proudly began serving as the Connecticut host site for the National Coalition for the Homeless Faces of Homelessness Speakers’ Bureau. With help from an Americorps VISTA member, by the close of 2012, the program had recruited eight speakers and held three speaking engagements all over the state, reaching over 300 attendees. Speakers put a human face to this very large and often misunderstood issue. The speakers present to schools, churches, and other community groups to talk about their past or current experiences of being homeless. 8 Community Engagement a year of projects in pictures A ctions speak louder than words. Below is a snapshot of special projects that took place throughout 2012. Thanks to all of our volunteers who got hands on this year!
