Blame your parents By Sally Rummel news@tctimes.com; 810-629-8282 You’re either thanking your mom and dad for your golden tresses, or wishing you hadn’t inherited your mom’s coarse, frizzy hair or your dad’s receding hairline. Either way, your hair says a lot about where you came from and who you are today. Although your hair characteristics may seem to physically favor one side over the other, you get the same amount of genetic information from both parents, according to genetics.thetech.org. For each hair trait — texture, color, hairline, etc. — both parents contribute equally, four hair-color genes for a total of eight. In general, dark hair is dominant over light. But parents can pass on a number of ranges of shades, depending on the pigments they have in their hair and how they mix. A dark brown pigment, eumelanin, can result in light blonde hair in small amounts, or produce black hair, in large amounts with tightly packed See HAIR on 6B LOCAL LIVING Sunday, June 12, 2016 www.tctimes.com Fenton senior heading to UM for gymnastics NOTICE ANNUAL MEETING OF ARGENTINE TOWNSHIP The Annual Meeting of the Argentine Township residents will be held on Monday, June 27, 2016 at 6:30 pm at the Argentine Township Hall, 9048 Silver Lk Rd, Linden. I broke my ankle which required surgery, so I did not really get to see how I would have done.” Murphy said he was finally able to be healthy around state championships. “I was second in the state. I had a great nationals and was able to finish sixth in the country,” he said. The pommel horse and vault are two of Murphy’s best events. The pommel horse and vault will be the two events that he will focus on at the University of Michigan. “Michigan has always been number one on my list. It’s a great academic school, it’s close to home, and I just think it gives me the best opportunity both athletically and academically to succeed,” said Murphy. He will study business and hopes to get into the Ross School of Business. He would like to go onto law school as well. Murphy loves the challenge that gymnastics brings. It allows him to have an opportunity to constantly learn new skills while at the same time perfecting certain skill sets. One piece of advice Murphy would like to share with young inspiring gymnasts is to always believe in yourself. “If you’re able to believe in yourself then you can accomplish anything you want as long as you work hard, but it has to come from that belief in yourself,” said Murphy. LOCAL LIVING www.tctimes.com Sunday, June 12, 2016 HAIRSTYLES SINCE THE ‘50S By Hannah Ball hball@tctimes.com; 810-433-6792 One identifiable aspect of any decade is the most popular hairstyles. Some are short and curly, some are straight and long, and some are coming back in style while some have never left. Men’s hairstyles haven’t changed as much as women’s, but everyone remembers the mullet. Here are popular hairstyles since the 1950s. Source: instyle.com, elle.com 1950S 1960S Rita Hayworth Priscilla Presley Audrey Hepburn 1950S For women, the loose curls were popular, made famous by Rita Hayworth during the 40s and 50s. For men, Elvis’ style was in, with his tight on the sides and tall on top look. 1960S 1970S The end of the ‘50s and most of the ‘60s were all about the flip, structured curls, the beehive and anything that fell in between. The most popular, however, was the short, above-thebrow fringe that Audrey Hepburn made famous. For men, it was the Beatles inspired shoulder-length shaggy hair. 1980S Farah Fawcett Cher 1970S Everything changed in the ‘70s with Priscilla Presley’s voluminous blowout, and Cher’s perfectly-straight long hairstyle. Farrah Fawcett’s long, big waves, often called the “shag” haircut, were a hit in the ‘70s as well, inspiring women to grow their hair out and try for those big waves. For men, the ‘70s was an acceptable time to have more facial hair. 1980S 1990S In the ‘80s, bigger was better and hair was no exception. Sarah Jessica Parker’s voluminous ringlets with a minipoof were a hit. 2000S Jennifer Aniston Blake Lively Sara Jessica Parker For men in the ‘80s, the slicked-back, businessman look became popular. 1990S When Jennifer Aniston cut her hair for the show “Friends,” her hairstyle, known as “The Rachel,” became as popular as the hit show. The 90s grunge era for men boasted longer hair that’s helpful when head banging to music. 2000S Some speculate that Meg Ryan’s short shaggy layers with pale highlights were inspired by “The Rachel.” The look was a hit. Miley Cyrus For men in the early 2000s, the spiky coiffeur look took the crown as the most popular men’s hairstyle, along with taking longer than their female counterparts to do their hair in front of the mirror. 2010S It’s too early to pick the defining hairstyle of this current decade, but Miley Cyrus’ short cut with blunt bangs are in the running, along with long, wavy curls and perfectly straight, long hair. During this decade for men, the man bun has become widely accepted in pop culture, along with a longer-ontop, short-on-the-sides cut. $25. 00 Blow Out Schedule your appointment today Monday-Friday 9 to 8 Saturday 9 to 3 134 N Leroy, Ste. 2 • Fenton 810.750.3731 • salon416.com 3B 4B LOCAL LIVING Sunday, June 12, 2016 ASK THE MECHANIC Chris Wilkinson, Certified Mechanic could be wrong with Q: What my tr uck? Like so many of America’s 24 million golfers, your husband, dad or grandpa probably enjoys the smell of fresh cut fairways, the crisp sound of a well-placed shot and the taste of a cold drink after the round. The fact that he’s a golfer opens up a whole new world of possibilities for gifts, especially this coming Father’s Day. The first gift idea that comes to mind is to invite your golfing husband, father or grandfather for a day out on the links, either on Father’s Day, June 19 or on another day of your choice. You can make an entire day of celebration with a barbecue afterward, enjoying the fellowship of family and good food. Your present could also be a gift certificate to a favorite golf course, or one that your guy would love to play, but hasn’t yet. Here are a few other golfing gift ideas in different price ranges: $50 and under Think golf balls, LED lighted golf balls for a late evening round of golf, golf shirts or shorts, head covers, personalized club links, trunk storage, putting mat, golf gift basket with treats and snacks, Swiss Army golf tool, to name a few $50 to $100 You can buy a certificate for a pro lesson for your favorite golfer, wireless Bluetooth speakers for enjoying your playlist, a club fitting session, putting laser, golf practice net, and more. Over $100 This is the price point for many fun, techie-type golfing gifts, from laser rangefinders ($300 on up) to GPS rangefinder watches ($125 on up), golf shoes like the Nike TW’14 worn by Tiger Woods at the Players ($130 and up), SkyPro Swing Trainer from SkyGolf (about $150), among others. Over $500 Think about a dream golfing trip to North Carolina, a trip to the Masters in Atlanta, Georgia, or another over-the-top golf experience. There are many dream golf destinations in Michigan, too — from Treetops Resorts in Gaylord to the Inn at Bay Harbor in Petoskey. If your dad likes playing euchre or poker, he would enjoy personalized playing cards. You can order cards printed with family pictures, dog pictures, or pictures of your dad from Goin’ Postal in Fenton. Beer is a popular drink during summer, and your husband or dad would enjoy drinking his favorite kind that can be found at many local retailers and breweries. Books also make a great gift for anyone. If your dad frequently watches Fox News, Bill O’Reilly’s new book “The Day the President Was Shot,” about the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan, comes out June 21 and is available for preorder at Fenton’s Open Book. The book, “The Very Embarrassing Book of Dad Jokes: Because Your Dad Thinks He’s Hilarious” would be a great gift for any dad who likes to make jokes. This can also be preordered at Fenton’s Open Book. WE WILL NEVER know what actually happened to create the Flint water debacle. The only thing we know for sure is that we will have to pay for it. Very blond hair has the least amount of pigment and the fewest pigment granules spaced farthest apart. Your hair’s texture, straight, wavy or curly, as well as the thickness of individual strands of hair, is determined by multiple genes. Different genes influence hair texture and thickness in people of different ethnic backgrounds. It is the interaction among these genes, not any single gene, that determines the character of your hair. People with fine hair are always looking for ways to add volume and people with coarse hair are always trying to “tame their mane” and keep the frizzies at bay. “The ideal hair texture seems to be somewhere in the middle,” said Brigette Baker, master stylist at Serendipity Wellness Spa in Linden. It is not only your genetics that can influence your hair texture and thickness. Hormones, certain medications and chemicals, such as hair relaxers, can alter the characteristics of a pern Your hair son’s hair. Hair texture is either your and thickness can also “crowning glochange with age. ry” or a “mane to be tamed,” But you can maximize and you have the hair you’ve been genetics from born with, by taking your parents to thank or blame. good care of your locks. Baker suggests regular hair cuts to keep split ends at bay and shampooing every three days to maintain your mane’s natural oils. Your hair grows at an average rate of one-quarter to one-half inch a month, so it requires patience if you’re trying to grow it out. Still, it’s important not to skimp on regular hair cuts and trims. “If you don’t get your hair trimmed often enough, we end up having to take off more length because of the damaged split ends,” said Baker. “Also, don’t overdo chemical treatment, because that can really damage your hair.” Today’s high-tech color, relaxers, flat irons, Brazilian Blow Outs, extensions and other treatments can change your hair from brown to blonde or frizzy to straight, but they’re all temporary fixes. “To straighten your hair, you have to use heat, either a flat iron or a round brush and blow dry,” said Baker. “Relaxers also involve heat and chemicals, which can be very damaging to your hair month after month. The Brazilian Blow Out is less damaging because it combines keratin with amino acids rather than chemicals.” Keratin is a protein that is naturally in your hair, so keratin-based treatments are more restorative than damaging. Smooth- TRI-COUNTY TIMES | TIM JAGIELO It can take two hours for a coloring session, from start to finish. ing treatments usually last nine to 12 weeks and cut drying time in half, another big advantage for people with coarse, curly or wavy hair. “Everyone wants hair they can’t have. That’s the biggest problem,” said Baker. TRI-COUNTY TIMES | TIM JAGIELO While stylists still use foil to color hair, the latest trend is to brush color on, for a more artistic look. TRI-COUNTY TIMES | TIM JAGIELO The chemicals used to color hair have improved, according to Baker. SHADES OF GRAY If you want to see how well you’ll sport your own gray hair someday, just look at your parents. They are the best indicators for when your hair will turn gray and whether it will be a beautiful silver mane or less distinct salt and pepper. Graying is age-related. As we age, hair follicles produce less melanin, the pigment that gives your hair its hue. Naturally occurring hydrogen peroxide can also build up in the hair, bleaching the color. Typically, Caucasians start going gray in their mid-30s, Asians in their late 30s and African-Americans in their mid-40s, according to WebMd.com. Half of all people have a significant amount of gray hair by the time they reach 50. “People with dark hair tend to get gray hair faster than soft blondes and browns,” said Brigette Baker, master stylist at Serendipity Wellness Spa in Linden. “Gray also blends in better with blonde hair, so it doesn’t show as much.” A Caucasian is considered to be prematurely gray if his or her hair turns gray by age 20. You can choose to embrace the gray with a sleek new cut and highlights to make the transition, or you can conceal the gray with highlights, permanent color or spray-on airbrush hair makeup. www.tctimes.com LOCAL LIVING Redheads are a unique few Sunday, June 12, 2016 PREVENTATIVE & COSMETIC DENTISTRY FOR THE YOUNG, NOT SO YOUNG, BRAVE AND NOT-SO-BRAVE! WE’RE YOUR STATE-OF-THE-ART, HOME TOWN DENTAL CARE EXPERTS! BY VERA HOGAN If you have red hair, you are a rare breed. Less than 2 percent of the world’s population has red hair. Of the approximate 7.4 billion people on earth, that’s approximately 140 million redheads. Here are some interesting points about natural red hair and those who have it: • Red hair is a genetic mutation. Both parents must be carriers of the mutated MC1R gene to be able to produce redhaired children, of which there is a 25-percent chance if they don’t have red hair themselves. • Scotland boasts the highest percentage of natural redheads at 13 percent. Ireland comes in second with 10 percent. • Red hair can occur in any ethnicity. It occurs more frequently (2 to 6 percent) in people of northern or western European ancestry, and less frequently in other populations. • It is a r eal chore to try and dye red hair. Because it holds its pigment tighter than any other hair color, red strands need to have their pigment stripped before being dyed by bleaching which, of course, damages the hair. • Each strand of red hair is generally thicker than other shades, which compensates for the fact that redheads have less hair. Redheads are said to have on average 90,000 strands, while blondes have 110,000, and brunettes have 140,000. • Red hair will never turn gray. It simply fades to white via rose gold when the time comes. • Blue eyes and red hair forms the rarest combo on earth. Most (natural) redheads will have brown eyes, followed by hazel or green shades. • Redheads can change temperature quicker because, according to research, they are more sensitive to hot and cold pain. It has nothing to do with their mythical “fiery temperament.” • Redheads are more likely to develop skin cancer. Because of their commonly fair skin and sensitivity to ultraviolet light, redheads are more likely to develop skin cancer. The International Journal of Cancer reported in 2010 that natural redheads are approximately two and a half times as likely to develop the dangerous cancer as people with other hair colors. • Redheads can produce their own Vitamin D. They can’t sufficiently absorb Vitamin D because it’s down to their lower melanin-concentration. Redheads internally produce their own Vitamin D when they’re exposed to low light conditions. • People with red hair are more likely to be left-handed. Recessive traits often happen in pairs so commonly people with the gene for red hair also possess the trait for left-handedness. • Climate change is threatening the gene. Given that red hair doesn’t adapt to warm climates, the gene could, at some point, become extinct.
