Ortega found guilty in killing of his wife,
attempted murder of brother-in-law
Globe, Arizona - Gila County Attorney Bradley D.
Beauchamp announced that on May 6, 2014, 38 year-old
Guillermo Ortega, III was found guilty by a jury of six
women and six men of Second Degree Murder, Attempted
Second Degree Murder, and four counts of Aggravated
Assault following a seven-day jury trial.

According to Chief Deputy Shawn C. Fuller, who
prosecuted the case, evidence was presented that on April
28, 2013, at approximately 5:45 p.m., Ortega attacked his
ex-wife with a knife following a brief domestic violencerelated dispute the two had in her home, which was
located in Hayden. During the attack the victim suffered
fatal injuries to her neck.
While the victim was being attacked, her brother, who
was inside the home, heard a struggle and came to her
aid. The defendant then attacked the victim’s brother with
the knife and attempted to kill him by stabbing him in the
chest and the neck. After the attack the defendant fled the
scene and was apprehended several hours later in Pinal
County.
Ortega’s sentencing is scheduled to be conducted in
Globe on June 2, 2014, at 3:30 p.m., before the Honorable
Robert Duber II. Ortega is facing a mandatory prison

County Attorney Beauchamp commended the Hayden
Police Department, the Department of Public Safety, the
Golder Ranch Fire District, the Kearny Police Department,
and the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office for conducting the
investigation that led to the successful apprehension and
prosecution of Ortega.
OBITUARY
Emilie M. Franklin
Emilie M. Franklin, 88, of Kearny, passed away Tuesday,
April 1, 2014. She was born to Albin and Mabel (Johnson)
Ohman on January 2, 1926, in Ephraim,
Wisconsin.
Emilie and Bob Franklin had two
children Pam and Mike. She was a
homemaker, she enjoyed oil painting,
bowling and bingo. Emilie was loved by
her family and friends.
Emilie was survived by daughter, Pam
Madala; grandchildren, Cheri Collins and
Justin Madala; six great-grandchildren,
and four great-great-grandchildren.
Emilie was proceeded in death by her husband,
Bob Franklin; son, Mike Franklin; and great- greatgranddaughter, Alexis Nevaeh, who passed away two
weeks prior to Emilie’s death.
No services were held.

Sheriff’s Report
The Pinal County Sheriff’s Report is taken from
the daily logs, based on the information provided
by deputies. All persons arrested are presumed
innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
May 5
Paul Martin Garcia, 35, Hayden, was arrested in Gila
County on a warrant for failure to appear. He was
transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail in
Florence.
May 6
PCSO assisted with an accident with injuries in the area
of N. Hwy. 77, Winkelman. A female, 18, fell out of a
pickup truck onto the highway. The reporting party said
she was breathing and crying. Hayden Police Department
and Kearny EMS responded to the scene. PCSO assisted
by setting up a landing zone for a helicopter. The woman
was transported by helicopter to University Medical

An animal attack was reported in the 4500 block of N.
Margo St., Dudleyville. A pack of four dogs, at least two
of them identified as pit bulls, were found to be attacking
the reporting person’s cattle, “chewing on the cow’s mouth
and tail.” The cow’s owner shot and killed one of the dogs
and wounded another. The call was turned over to Pinal
County Animal Control.
May 11
An animal attack was reported in the 80000 block of
E. Cactus Dr., Dudleyville. Two pit bulls entered the
reporting person’s yard and attacked her dog. Another
adult chased off the dogs with a broom handle. The call
was turned over to Pinal County Animal Control.

Pinal County Oracle/Riverside Highway Roads Foreman
Charles Headley wins Robert C. Esterbrooks Award
FLORENCE - Oracle/Riverside Highway Roads Foreman
Charles Headley is the winner of the 15th Annual Robert
C. Esterbrooks Award in Operations.
Headley, a 21 year employee, oversees operations in the
Oracle Maintenance District. It is the largest maintenance
area in Pinal County encompassing 230 miles of paved
and gravel surface roads. The Kearny native has been the
Oracle Maintenance District Foreman for the past three
years.
“During his time in Oracle, Chuck has a huge list of
accomplishments,” said Public Works Director Louis
Andersen. “He has worked on realigning the Mount
Lemmon Road across forest land that helped protect the
local historical post office from heavy traffic. Chuck and
his crew also were instrumental in meeting protection
requirements and receiving permits for minimal road
maintenance of the San Pedro River Road Crossing. He is
a great leader and great employee.”
The Robert C. Esterbrooks Award is given out by
the Arizona Association of County Engineers. It is in
recognition of individual county employee service that
benefits the community and outstanding achievement that
fosters innovation, effectiveness better communication
and efficiency that ultimately results in a better product to
all communities.
In his off time, Headley is active in the Kearny area
coaching sports and other civic activities.

Final Copper Basin Idol Show filled with talent

What a musical, whimsical, fun evening
as the final show of the Copper Basin
Idol blows everyone away with the
amazing talent that surrounds the local
communities. Martina Burnam has been
facilitating the Copper Basin Idol for eight
successful years. Martina puts forth such
love and passion towards preparing for
the show and all the participants of the
Idol show. She has thoroughly enjoyed her
time with this continuing project.
Lucky Romero hosted the Copper Basin
Idol with his charm and charisma he
delighted the crowd as they watched and
listened to the Idol acts. The performers
consisted of; Josette Kimmel, Myranda
Figueroa, Julie Meza, Julianna Borquez,
Martina Borquez, Ariella Borquez,
Miranda Aviles, and Breauna Hathaway.
Guest performers were Emily Martinez,
Danny Fessenden, Johnny Angel Silva,
Lucky Romero and Martina Burnam. Yes,
after many years of putting this event on
Martina wanted to let her beautiful voice
be heard, what a special treat.
Even though this is the final Copper
Basin Idol the performers out did
themselves with their beautiful voices
and talent. Each of the participants were
thoroughly enjoyed by many community
members. The music was moving and a
real pleasure to listen to!
There are many people involved in
putting this event together; Danny
Fessenden, sound manager, Nancy and
Annie Hinojos, spotlight technicians,
Adam Perlman and Ray Federal Credit
Union, donated a projector for the
evening, Angela and Troy Ramirez and
the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce
for helping facilitate the event, the judges,
score keepers, admission takers, and the
Hayden Unified School District for the
use of the auditorium. Thank you all for
helping make this a fun family event.

CAC science professor Dr. Beth Krueger writes
chapter in college science teaching book
EASTERN PINAL
COUNTY, Ariz. – Dr. Beth
Krueger, a professor of
science at CAC’s Aravaipa
Campus since 2007,
has written a chapter
in a recently-published
instructional book titled
Exemplary College Science
Teaching. The chapter,
called Take Your Students
Outside: Success With
Science Outdoors, was
peer-reviewed and included
in the book published
by the National Science
Teachers Association.
The section draws on
Krueger’s experience with
and staunch support for
experiential learning.
“I don’t like to lecture,”
Krueger says, without
hesitation. By taking
her students to nature
conservancies for bird
and plant surveys, for
example, she believes that
the students are “looking
at real-world issues in a
real setting and conducting
real research that actually
benefits not just them and
the class but the non-
profit in their community
that is actually using their
numbers.”
Krueger, who was recently
named Faculty of the Year
by the student body at
CAC’s Aravaipa Campus,
was invited by the NSTA
to write the chapter
after giving a conference
presentation on the
practice of teaching science
outside. The chapter
itself describes CAC, the
Aravaipa Campus, and
Eastern Pinal County in
great detail and includes
testimonials from several
of the students who have
enjoyed Krueger’s methods.
“‘Working outside the
classroom in the field
was a great experience,’”
Delilah Carbajal says in the
book. “‘I enjoyed the visual
aspects of doing fieldwork:
Observing endangered
fish and actually being in
a desert riparian system
proved to be most helpful
in the field versus the
classroom.’”

“I enjoyed it,” he says. “I
actually thought it was a lot
easier to learn outdoors and
see the living environment.
In a lot of ways, I thought
it was easier than the
classroom experience.”
In the chapter, Krueger
also explains some other,
logistical benefits to
teaching outdoors.
“‘One major challenge
for teachers,’” she writes,
“‘is that much of the
scientific equipment
available to schools has…a
large learning curve…
[is] expensive to buy and
maintain; and cannot
take the rigors of field
use.’” In the next sentence
she explains that the
training staff from the
Arizona Rivers Project, the
organization that Krueger
took a workshop with when
she first arrived in Arizona,
emphasized the fact that
“‘quality field work could
be done by students with
inexpensive, user-friendly,
field-friendly equipment.’”
Although the chapter is
geared toward those who
instruct science courses in
higher education, Krueger
believes that her model
can be scaled up or down
to fit any level of education
and can be used in other

Copper Corridor track athletes compete at
State Track Championships

The San Manuel Women’s Track
Team, which went undefeated
during the season, finished 23rd
in the final team rankings at last
weekend’s State Track Championships.
The Miners had four track
team members place five different events: Andrea Castaneda
(8th – 3200m), Analisa Robles
(8th – Discus), Theresa Sweeney
(17th – Discus and 16th – Shot
Put), and Michael Sanchez (20th
– Discus).
The Ray Bearcats were also represented at the track championships. Three track team members
placed in four different events:
Kenneth Palmer (18th – 3200m),
Demetri Breeden (16th – Long
Jump and 15th – Triple Jump),
and Nick Lara (17th – Discus).
Bearcats’ season ends after extra innings loss in playoffs

The 6th-seeded Ray baseball
team saw its season come to end
after an eight-inning loss to 3rd-
seeded San Manuel last Saturday,
4 – 3.
The Bearcats advanced to the
quarterfinals versus San Manuel
after defeating 11th-seeded Superior last Friday, 9 – 5.
The ‘Cats finished the season
with a record of 21 – 8, including
11 – 4 in sectional play. They finished third, behind San Manuel
and Miami, in Section VI. The
21 wins are the most in a season
over the last 10 years.
Despite the disappointment of
their season ending, the Bearcats
have to be optimistic about the
future. Multi-sport athlete Dominic Bravo is the only senior on
this year’s roster. The ‘Cats will
return eight juniors to next year’s
team. There’s no doubt that the
loss of Bravo will leave a big hole
to fill, but there’s enough talent
returning to make up for it.

Kearny Elks honor students at annual banquet

Kearny Elks Lodge #2478 honored Copper Basin area
young people at its annual Youth Banquet held recently.
Each academic year the Lodge sponsors a variety of
contests and programs involving students from both the
Ray and Hayden/Winkelman School Districts.
Students receiving recognition included:
Americanism Contest, Kacy Molar, Ray; Drug Awareness,
3-4 Division Felicity Ramirez, Ray and 5-7 Kacy Molar, Ray.
Hoop Shoot, Myranda Figueroa, who also captured the
State Championship in her age division, Anthony Lopez,
Amaniz Ochoa, Derek Jegueroa, Brianna Goad and Morales
Cruz.
Soccer Shoot, 1st place winners, Derek Figueroa, Kacy
Molar and Ashton Kelley; 2nd place Eli Martinez and
Chasity Kelley.
Students of the Month are selected each month for
academic and school involvement. Hayden High School
students recognized this past school year were Aaron

Kearny’s historical locomotive completed

The renovation of the air locomotive in Kearny has finally
been completed. Robert Anderson said he is still working
on some detailing but the job is pretty much finished. The
compressed air locomotive was built in 1925 by the H.K.
Porter Company in Pittsburgh, Penn. The H.K. Porter
Company built their first compressed air locomotive
in 1890 to be used in an underground coal mine in
Pennsylvania. Compressed air locomotives were safer to
operate in underground mines as there was no need for
a fire to burn coal which was dangerous especially in coal
mines and there was no smoke exhaust which also was a
danger to underground miners.
The 1925 Porter air locomotive was used by the
Kennecott Copper Corporation in the original
underground Ray Copper Mine. It was used to haul men,
ore and supplies on underground rail lines. It was retired
in 1955. Robert Anderson had finished most of the work
two years ago but has been waiting for parts which were
hard to find. Robert machined a lot of parts and did a lot
of welding work. He even used a 105 year old drill press
for some of the work. He was able to recreate a pressure
gauge and found a headlight for the locomotive. He
received the parts just before Pioneer Days and was able
to complete the work. Bill Dunn got a piece of timber for
him which was badly needed.
Robert said he got a lot of help with donations and the
loaning of equipment and wanted to make sure everyone
including the town of Kearny was recognized and thanked
for their help. “It was a lot of work but it was worth it
when people tell me it looks good,” said Robert. “I’m real
happy the way it turned out.” You can see this remarkable
restoration of this historical locomotive in downtown
Kearny.

Kearny Public Library’s Annual Poster Contest Winners
Kearny - The Kearny Public Library
hosted its Open House to honor the
winners of The Friends of the Kearny
Library’s Annual Poster Contest which is
held during National Library Week each
April.
This year’s theme was “Libraries: the
Heart of Every Community”. This year the
fifth and sixth grades were added. There
were 18 winners, in total, 15 of which were
in attendance with their families.
To kick off the program local Author,
Nancy Young from Aravaipa gave a short
talk on her new children’s book “The
Moon Saw It All”. A copy was given to
each winner, and, after the program, Ms.
Young signed most of the copies.
The winners of the Friends of the
Kearny Library Annual Poster Contest, by
grade, are: kindergarteners Dominique
Martinez, Gianah De Los Reyes and Jason
Day; first graders, Mya Carder, Graciela
Rivera and Nicholas Lopez; second

graders, Kassidy Ballejos, Alexis Babb and
Raelynn Loving; third graders, Hunter
Day, Briannah Noriega and Tayson
Summers; fourth graders, Brina Morales,
Felicity Rameriz and Amariz Ochoa; fifth
graders, Chelsea Flores, Derek Figueroa
and Indigo Patterson.
The winners for the DVD Drawings
are Joyce Campbell, who won The Book
Thief, and, Robert Benson Jr., who won
Frozen.
