Winterize your wallet
4 maintenance projects to save money and prepare your home for winter
(BPT) - Cooler temperatures signal it’s time to
switch gears and prepare
your home for the approaching winter. A few modifications can go a long way
- here are four key projects
to winterize your abode,
help you stay warm and save
money this coming season
and beyond.
in windows with caulk, or
apply weather stripping or
window winterizing film
to keep the warm air from
escaping.
Can’t find the drafts? Simply run your finger around
edges of windows and doors
to feel where air is leaking;
or use a flashlight to see
where light passes through.
1. Stop letting money
slip through the cracks
An easy way to winterize
and keep heat in is to find
drafts and seal them. In fact,
drafts can waste five to 30
percent of a home’s energy
usage according to the U.S.
Department of Energy says.
Keep drafts at bay by simply
placing a rolled bath towel
under doors and seal gaps
2. Save water year-round
The kitchen is one of the
hardest working areas in the
house, and installing a lowflow faucet can help cut back
on your water bills. Choose
an option with a pulldown
spray wand, like the Kendall
kitchen faucet from Moen,
that helps conserve water
as well as make tasks in and
around the sink easier. The
spray wand features Reflex
technology, which allows for
easy and secure docking of
the wand.
3. Get smart with heating
You may think your old
thermostat is doing just
fine, but the truth is a new
one can save you up to 12
percent on heating and 15
percent on cooling, according to The Nest. The Nest
Thermostat is a new-age
way to conserve resources
through its ability to learn
your schedule and teach you
how to save through notifications. In turn, it’ll save you
money, since you’ll be heating and cooling your home
only when necessary.
4. Water heater cool down
The furnace isn’t the
only place to save by turning down the temperature.
Many water heaters are
set to 140 degrees, which
can actually be dangerous
and cause scalding. Simply
lowering the temperature
20 degrees can save you $36
to $61 annually, according
to the U.S. Department of
Energy. This will also slow
mineral buildup and corrosion in the water heater
and pipes, saving significant
money in the long run by
preserving the life of your
unit.
Getting a head start on
winterizing projects this
fall will not only prepare
your home for the season to
come, but make your wallet
happy.

Why consider
metal when
choosing a roof ?
Stone-coated metal roofing systems, such as those from Gerard and Allmet, offer Class A fire resistance, energy-savings, and great durability. As shown
in Gerard Canyon Shake Shingle.
Durability, fire-resistance and energy-savings
(BPT) - Residential roofing experts report metal
roofing is winning converts
based on its durability, fireresistance, energy savings,
value and natural good looks.
The Metal Roofing Association (MRA) reports nonmetal roofs last 17 years on
average, but metal roofs can
last a lifetime. Though higher in initial costs, they can
boost homes’ resale value.
They can also cut homeowners’ insurance premiums
in some states by up to 35
percent.
Among factors underpinning the growth of
metal roofs, few are more
important than the roofing
systems’ fire-resistance, the
alliance reports.
The product Cosyns’ firm
installs, Allmet Stone-Coated
Metal Roofing, and another
brand, Gerard Stone-Coated
Metal Roofing Systems,
both tout the benefits of
their Class A Fire Ratings.
This fire resistance adds to
particularly high demand
for these roofing systems in
wildfire-prone areas of North
America.
The extra durability that
stone-coated metal roofing
systems provide is identified as another factor in
their increasing use. These
systems don’t rot, warp,
crack or break. They are also
superior to conventional
roofing systems in standing
up to extreme weather with
a 2.5 inch hailstone warranty, Class 4 impact rating,
and 120 mile per hour wind
warranty.
Metal roofs last two to
three times longer than ordinary roofs, meaning they can
last 40 to 60 years or longer,
according to the MRA.
While conventional roofs
in darker colors absorb the
sun’s rays, metal roofing
actually reflects them. That
decreases summertime cooling loads and also insulates
against winter’s cold, saving
homeowners utility costs.
Metal roofing’s aesthetics
are realistic and mimic natural roofing products, experts
say. Both Allmet and Gerard
stone-coated metal roofing
systems offer an array of
styles, from natural clay tiles
to wood shake, natural slate
and asphalt-like shingles.
“The shake resembles natural shake perfectly, and the
tile resembles clay tile,”
Cosyns says of the roofs
his firm installs throughout
Ontario.
Cosyns reports homeowner customers like the
functional benefits of stonecoated metal roofs, and really enjoy their curb appeal.
“They love the appearance
the roof provides the home,”
he says.

5 DIY steps
to help you stay warm and save money this winter
(BPT) - With the dead of winter
fast approaching, it’s never too soon
(or late) to prepare your home for the
cold months ahead. With the goal of
keeping cold air out and warm air in,
make sure you’re doing all you can to
keep your family warm and your heating bills low.
Proper insulating and air sealing
can help lower your energy bills by
up to 30 percent, according to the
Residential Energy Services Network
(RESNET). Additionally, the average
U.S. home has a half mile of gaps and
cracks spread throughout, according
to energystar.gov. If you’re seeing spiders, dust, cobwebs and feeling drafts
or uneven room temperatures, your
home likely has gaps and poor insulation. Here are five DIY air sealing
steps to help keep your home comfortable during the frigid weather using
insulating foam sealant:
1. Scope out the problem areas
Start by checking around doors and
windows that lead outside or to the
garage. Gaps around water and waste
pipes often lead to exterior walls
which can let in a lot of air. Don’t forget to look around in your basement
and attic where you may find gaping joists, holes in wood or cracked
blocks.
2. Take safety precautions
Before starting any DIY project,
be sure to take the necessary safety
precautions. Begin by reading and
understanding all of the instructions
on the foam sealant can for proper use
and handling. Sealant is sticky and
will adhere to your skin, so cover all
skin. At a minimum, you’ll need both
gloves and long sleeves to cover your
hands and arms, along with a pair of
safety glasses. Protect the floor and
surrounding area by laying down a
ground cover and make certain the
room has proper ventilation with no
sparks or flames nearby.
3. Start with windows and doors
To seal the openings around windows and doors and their rough
openings, find an entry point for the
nozzle to spray the foam sealant,
such as Great Stuff(tm) Window &
Door Insulating Foam Sealant. Fill the
cracks only about half way, because
the foam will expand the rest of the
way. Not only does this block out cold
air, but it’ll help keep those unwanted
bugs and spiders out of your home.
4. Move on to cracks in the foundation
Cracks in your home’s foundation tend to develop over time. It’s
important to take action when you
find them, to help prevent major damage down the road. Apply a waterresistant, air-tight sealant to any
cracks you find in your basement or
attic. Shake the sealant can and turn
it upside down to begin filling. If you
spray too much, wait for the sealant
to cure, and after about eight hours
when it is fully cured, level it with a
serrated knife.
5. Seal off pipe penetrations
Pipes that penetrate floors and
walls in your kitchen, bathroom and
laundry room are prime areas for air
flow and pests to sneak through. As
a result, the space that surrounds the
pipes should not be left wide open.
Using a can of foam sealant, point the
straw into the opening around the
pipe and start sealing. Do not force
foam into spaces or voids behind
walls.
6. Safely store and dispose of cans
Most one-component insulating
foam sealant cans are for one-time
use so before you start, make sure
you identify all the areas around your
home that you can seal. Also be sure
to follow all of the instructions on the
product label for both storage and disposal. Disposal regulations for these
types of products may differ from one
location to the next. Because a sealant is pressurized it must be stored
upright and at room temperature.
Follow these steps to help keep your
home warm and cozy this winter. For

Top kitchen renovation:
Upgrading for love alone
(BPT) - If you follow home
improvement trends, you’ve probably read in recent years that
Americans are willing to invest
significantly to create luxurious
dream bathrooms. Now it seems
the same is true for innovative,
beautiful kitchens. More than
half of homeowners planning a
renovation will upgrade their
kitchen, and nearly four in five
would give up something for a
year- such as a family vacation,
date nights or even Internet
access - in order to get the
kitchen of their dreams, according to a new survey from home
appliance manufacturer, LG Electronics.
“Great kitchens have always
sold homes, but this study shows
that kitchen renovation is truly
having its moment,” says Robin
Baron, president of the New York
Metro Chapter of the American
Society of Interior Designers
(ASID). “More people intend
to redo their kitchens not just
to enhance functionality or salability, but also to make the room
more aesthetically appealing,
luxurious and one they can really
fall in love with.”
If you’re planning a kitchen
renovation, here are the key areas
to consider, according to homeowners who responded to LG’s
survey:

overall style, homeowners
may consider modernizing
their kitchens with distinctive styling palettes that
include sleek, clean lines,
unique knobs and handles,
beautiful yet functional task
lighting and leading-edge
technology.
Better appliances
Homeowners see premium appliances as essential
to their kitchen upgrade
and are willing to pay more
to get the best. Nearly half
(49 percent) say they would
be willing to spend more on
a top-of-the-line refrigerator and 44 percent felt the
same way about ranges. In
fact, nearly nine out of 10
(89 percent) say they would
pay top dollar for a premium appliance, especially
if it is ENERGY STAR certified (64 percent), offers
a 10-year warranty (60
percent) or has advanced
features or functionality (49
percent).
From convection ovens
that distribute heat more
evenly through relocation
of the heating element from
the bottom of the oven to
the back to an energy efficient refrigerator that features pro-style details and
cabinet-depth styling, new
top-of-the-line appliances
are available from leading
premium brands, such as
LG Electronics’ high end
kitchen line, LG Studio.
The recently launched
LG Studio appliance suite
includes a counter-depth
refrigerator, gas and electric slide-in ranges and an
over-the-range microwave,
all featuring the latest in
kitchen technology and
a distinctive style palette
aimed to complement any
high-end kitchen design.
Countertops and cabinets
Functionality is still
important to homeowners, with 40 percent citing that they would like
their kitchen to be more
functional, whether they
plan to renovate or not.
Specifically, homeowners
wish their kitchen had more
counter space (44 percent)
and additional cabinets (37
percent).
From eco-friendly composite countertops made
of recycled paper and engineered stone with enhanced
durability to classic materials like natural granite and
butcher block, homeowners
have many options for
countertops that look great
and function beautifully.
Traditional woods like oak,
maple and cherry, and
modern choices, such as
stainless steel and bamboo,
give homeowners virtually
endless options in cabinet
design.
“Homeowners have
always known a great
kitchen can make their
homes easier to sell one
day, but now they’re willing
to spend more to improve
the kitchen for their own
enjoyment as well,” Baron
says. “In fact, nearly half
of the people LG talked to
said the kitchen was the
room they were most likely
to splurge on if they were to
renovate their home.”

4 DIY tips
Sedalia DemocratS
to refresh your
home for the holidays
(BPT) - With the
holidays right around the
corner, people across the
country are getting ready
to host parties, dinners
and more. Could your
home’s interior use a
refresh before the guests
arrive, but you haven’t
settled on the right idea?
The key is to select one or
two-day projects that will
make a lasting impact, like
dramatic trim and high
impact paint choices.
Here are four ways you
can liven up your home
just in time to share it
with friends and family.
Add wood to
your walls.
Whether for a
dining room,
entryway or bedroom,
adding wainscoting or
a wood feature wall can
dramatically change the
look of the room by adding
dimension, often making
smaller spaces feel a bit
bigger. Different types
of interior wood finishes
reflect different styles. For
example, leaving wood
paneling unfinished can
create the ambiance of a
coastal beach house, while
a transparent stain is a
more polished way to let
the natural beauty of the
wood grain shine through.
The contrast of wood finishes with an adjacent wall
in striking paint colors can
modernize a room in no
time flat.
1.
With so many design
choices out there, you’re
sure to find a style that
reflects your home and
personality. Pinterest is a
great inspiration source for
adding finishing touches
to your walls.
Update a key
piece of furniture. Breathe
new life into
a room by updating the
color of existing furniture. To start, pick a key
piece of furniture that is a
focal point of your room,
such as a dinner buffet or
hutch. Apply a paint color
that enhances the room’s
interior, or introduce a
bold color and accent it
with new complementary
accessories. “A little pop
of color on a key piece of
furniture can make neutral
rooms feel personalized
and welcoming,” says Dee
Schlotter, color expert at
Olympic(R) Paints and
Stains.
Install upscale
finishing touches. You can
dramatically
alter the look of any room
by adding crown molding
or trim. By placing crown
molding - a decorative
trim that bridges the gap
between walls and ceilings
- in a prominent visual
location, your room will
have just the architectural
accent it needs to shine for
the holidays.
2.
3.
The hardest part of the
project will be deciding
which room you’ll use for
the project. After installing
your molding or trim, you
can make these details pop
even more by choosing a
complementary paint color
for the ceiling and walls
using the Olympic Paint
Visualizer.
Refresh your
entryway. Painting your front
door is one of
the easiest home improvements to do this holiday
season. With your painting
materials already prepped
for inside projects, it’s a no
brainer to spruce up the
first thing people see when
they enter your home your front door.
4.
Applying a fresh coat
of paint to your home’s
entrance is not only a key
part of home maintenance,
it also adds curb appeal
to your home. You can go
for a classic look with a
stately black, gray or navy.
Or, try a fun and colorful
look by using trendy colors
like bright green, aqua or
orange. Olympic Paints
and Stains offers bold, rich
colors like Olympic Lemon
Grass, French Riviera or
Orange Poppy.
These home improvement projects don’t require
years of experience or deep
pockets. For more holiday
inspiration with home
improvement ideas big and
small, visit woodnaturally.

5 projects to create
the bathroom you’ve
always dreamed of
(BPT) - Work, social obligations, the kids your life is go, go, go. Sometimes it’s impossible
to find even the slightest moment for yourself,
until you head home to your bathroom oasis and
find a calmness to melt your stress away.
But what if you don’t feel this relaxation when
you enter your bathroom? Then, clearly, it’s time
for some changes. To turn your bathroom from
run-of-the-mill to the luxurious spa you deserve,
recreate your space with any or all of these five
projects and you’ll find the relaxing, soothing
environment you’ve always dreamed about.
• Turn up the heat. Whether you’re just stepping out of the tub in the evening or the bed in
the morning, the last thing you want to do is
walk on a cold floor. It shocks the system and
can eliminate any relaxing feelings you were

previously enjoying. Spas understand
this, which is why they’ve installed
heated floors to keep your comfortable from head to toe. So why
wouldn’t you do the same in your
bathroom? Replace your flooring
with heated floors and, for an added
perk, install heated towel racks as
well.
• Find the space you deserve. You
can’t feel comfortable when you’re
cramped. Many causes of bathroom
claustrophobia - hair care products,
towels, shaving/brush apparatus - can
be easily handled with improved
mirrored cabinet options. Robern’s
innovative AiO mirrored cabinets
sport a clean, contemporary design
that includes smartly designed storage space with added features like
touch-dimmable task lighting, integrated electrical and USB outlets and
magnetic storage for all those metal
groom tools clogging up your coun-
ters. Adding a bathroom vanity with
functional storage helps to get the
larger items off the counter and out
of sight. Robern cabinets are available in a variety of decorative glass
and overlay colors to fit any theme.
You can also personalize the vanity
with movable drawer dividers and
bins, in-drawer electric outlets, or a
hair dryer organizer.
• Let there be natural light. Create
a more natural feel in your bathroom
by adding natural light to your space
with a skylight. After a long hard day,
imagine how calm you’ll feel with a
skylight placed over your bathtub,
allowing you to watch the clouds
float by overhead while you soak.
• Upgrade your tub or shower. If
you truly want to recreate the spa
experience in your bathroom, then
upgrades to your tub or shower are a
must. Larger tubs or contoured tubs
create that spa feel and encourage
long soaking sessions. If you’re after
that whirlpool feel, look for a tub
with jets that are adjustable. To make
your shower more luxurious, look
for options that allow your shower to
double as a steam room or sauna.
• Add a splash of color. If scented
candles are already part of your bathroom routine, you understand the
power of aromatherapy - but do you
know about chromatherapy? This
holistic form of healing uses colors
to drive the desired response and
you can support this effort in your
bathroom by painting your walls in
a shade that appeals to and relaxes
you. But don’t stop there - add
splashes of complimentary colors
around the space from bath towels
and soap dishes to the robe you’ll
wear when you’re finally ready to
leave your newfound paradise.
After a busy day, it’s nice to know
there’s a relaxing retreat you can call
your own and it’s just waiting for
you. But your new bathroom won’t
create itself. Get started on your
bathroom renovation today and your
bathroom oasis will be ready before
you know it. To learn more about
Robern’s AiO cabinets, visit Robern.

4 things to
consider when
choosing siding
(BPT) - Selecting new
siding is one of the most
important decisions homeowners face when building
new or remodeling an
existing home. With so
many options - both classic
and modern materials there’s a lot to consider.
Many manufacturers are
now combining traditional
styles and materials with
high-tech finishes, delivering a product homeowners
can love for years to come.
Among all the options on
the market, vinyl siding -
with its various styles, textures and colors - remains
the most used product.
In fact, 2015 marked 21
straight years vinyl siding
held the top spot in cladding for new single-family
houses, according to the
U.S. Census Bureau’s
annual home report.
Whether you are building a home or remodeling
one, there are four key
areas homeowners should
account for when

determining which siding option meets
your needs: durability, design, maintenance and affordability.
Durability
Siding selection is typically a oncein-a-lifetime decision, making durability a key factor for many. Homeowners
should look for a siding option that is
resistant to every element, including
rain, wind and even the sun. Manufacturers now offer siding products with
technologies that resist the damaging
impact of the sun, preserving color for
the lifetime of the home. Options, like
Mastic Home Exteriors by Ply Gem
SolarDefense, expand exterior home
design with darker, on-trend colors that
make your home the envy of the neighborhood.
Design
Perhaps the most-overwhelming deci-
sion for most when considering siding
options is deciding on a style and color.
There are seven primary siding material options available to homeowners vinyl, metal, wood, brick, fiber cement,
stucco, and stone - and countless color
and style options within each material
type. To guide you in determining what
would look best, it is recommended to
ask a siding specialist like a contractor,
builder or architect for help. They can
educate you on color coordination and
what would go well with the neighborhood, while still giving personalized
options for your home. They will also
be able to weigh in on accent pieces
like trim and shutters, which can help
bring out your style.
“Homeowners are looking for more
creative and colorful options,” said Pat

Verlodt, president of Color Services
& Associates, an organization that
identifies color trends and educates
consumers and manufacturers about
those trends. “Whether you’re looking
for a specific panel texture, such as
cedar shake or wood clapboard, or a
certain period-specific color scheme to
align with historical significance, my
recommendation is to look at vinyl. It
provides the homeowner the freedom
to add low-maintenance color and definition that will never be out of style or
need painting or refinishing.”
Maintenance
Beyond style and color, homeowners are also seeking siding that is
low-maintenance, which reduces or
eliminates the cost and personal time
expended for proper upkeep. Each siding material type has a different level of
care and maintenance required. Vinyl
“Whether you’re looking for a specific panel texture,

typically requires just soap and water
for periodic cleaning. Wood and fiber
cement can require repainting every
five to seven years. Stucco will need
to be repainted and sealed. Brick and
stone require re-pointing of mortar.
The earlier point about durability plays
a part here too, ensuring the option
you select is free from potential timeconsuming - even costly repairs - due
to storm damage such as wind and
moisture.
Affordability
Lastly, set a budget. Do your homework on the options and secure estimates, then compare them with your
budget. Don’t forget that sometimes
investing a little more into the project
up front may reduce issues and maintenance costs down the road.
As you look to select new exterior
siding, be sure to keep in mind these
important factors - durability, design,
maintenance and affordability - to make
the best choice possible for your home
and lifestyle.
To get started on siding your house,
look to manufacturer websites such as
plygem.com for siding choices, as well
as home visualizer and color selection
tools that help homeowners experiment with different color and textures
before making a decision.

to tap into the
Nordic decor trend
(BPT) - Minimalist
Nordic design is taking
over the home decor scene
in 2016. Scandinavianinspired design principles,
featuring white, simple
color schemes and use of
natural materials, provide
attractive options for creating a balanced, beautiful
home.
The Nordic movement,
which evokes the simple,
minimalist homes of Denmark, Norway, Sweden,
Iceland and Finland, is
enjoying new popularity as
Americans seek to balance
work life with home life,
and create spaces where
they can unplug, unwind
and relax. Nearly 77 percent of homeowners reported neutral tones, such as
those embraced by Nordic
design, make a room feel
more tranquil, according to
a recent Sherwin-Williams
National Home Design and
Color survey.
Here are some tips to
steer your space clear of
clutter and embrace the
minimalist beauty of Nordic decor for a balanced
and bright 2016.
Start with a clean slate
Selecting the right hue of
white paint on your walls
can create the foundation
for Nordic design. Take a
cue from colors inspired
by natural, fine-textured
stone. For example, Alabaster (SW 7008), SherwinWilliams 2016 Color of the
Year, is a natural, flattering
white suited especially for
a harmonious atmosphere
in bedrooms, bathrooms,
living rooms and kitchens.
Turn on the light
As in Nordic countries,
the winter season’s long,
dark months create a craving for daylight and its
positive impact on mood.
During these months, take
advantage of the daylight
you do have by letting window light shine in through
a sheer curtain for an ethereal effect in your space.
When the sun goes
down, create the effects
of daylight in your home
decor. Incorporate shiny
and reflective elements,
like a large beautiful mirror
hung on the wall, to reflect
your interior lighting and
give the illusion of a more
spacious atmosphere.
Use shiny metallic elements such as copper,
the metal of the moment,
in a living room lamp or
for pendant lighting in a
white kitchen. Hang paper
lanterns in a bedroom to
add movement and lighten
up the space in a fun and
interesting way.
Embrace natural tones
Nordic design is all about
using natural, live-well
tones to create environments where we can feel
serene. To achieve this look
and feel, use earthy, natural
materials, such as Carrera
marble, to bring an element
of sophistication to a countertop in a kitchen or bath.
Choose birch or maple
wood grains for cabinets
and furniture to add balance to lovely light stone
grays and blush petal
pinks, and create a refreshing, yet uncomplicated
atmosphere.
Get sharp with geometrics
and details
Complex shapes, angles
and patterns in vibrant
colors are also present in
Nordic decor. Use a boxy
picture frame or multilevel
open shelving units to offer
symmetry and provide a
focal point in your space.
In a home that celebrates
simplicity, there’s always
room for a bit of whimsy
or a pop of color. Even
small details can make a
big statement: a zebrastriped pillow on a couch
or bed; several multicolored candleholders lined up
in a row on a dining room
sideboard; or red-painted
counter stools in a winterwhite kitchen.

your painting projects,

popular for shutters and

the trend toward richer

understated white or cream
