This engagement of American Ballet Theatre marks the final
performances of the tenth anniversary season of Glorya Kaufman
Presents Dance at The Music Center as well as the tenth season
that we have been privileged to have the incomparable ABT at the
Pavilion. In 2003, we began this journey with dance audiences and
supporters in Los Angeles and it has been a wonderful success.
The Music Center Board and staff believed that Angelenos would
respond to a thoughtfully curated series of the very finest dance
companies and artists from around the world. And, you have.
The Music Center’s commitment and the audience response
to the new dance program inspired philanthropist Glorya Kaufman. In 2009, Glorya made an
extraordinary $20 million commitment to support the program. Her gift provided a core of
sustaining support that has enabled the dance programming and outreach to grow and reach new
heights of excellence. I know that she takes great delight at every performance and in our work
with children.
Our partners in 2003, and ever since, have been members of Center Dance Arts (CDA), a volunteer
organization formed to initiate and provide sustaining support for The Music Center’s dance
programming, education and community engagement. Since 2003, through members’ donations
and special events, CDA has contributed more than $5 million to Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at
The Music Center.
I wanted to share this story with you because it is rare that, in the span of a single decade, a
community can witness the birth, growth and success of a vital artistic initiative. Our success
demonstrates that great things are possible with the combination of great artists, dedicated
professionals, committed donors at every level and a supportive audience. Glorya Kaufman
Presents Dance at The Music Center now has an international reputation as one of the finest
programs of its kind. We thank you all and, we continue to need your support.

programming NOTE
Welcome to the final engagement commemorating our 10th season of
Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center. I don't believe
there’s a more poignant way to conclude a year of celebration than
with a Music Center favorite, American Ballet Theatre.
ABT has called The Music Center its Los Angeles home since the
1960’s and they continue to be a leader in the world, working with
the globe’s most revered dancers and sought-after choreographers.
During the past seasons we have seen unforgettable performances
by many famed ABT dancers such as Angel Corella, Alessandra
Ferri, Ethan Stiefel and witnessed rising stars Hee Seo, Cory
Stearns, Daniil Simkin, LA’s own Misty Copeland and Stella Abrera.
No doubt with a refreshed Le Corsaire, and the return of a mixed
repertory program showcasing the extraordinary company we are
sure to have many more breathtaking moments.
As we continue our focus on the influence of composer Igor Stravinsky, a highlight of the ABT
opening night program is Apollo, which was the first of many incomparable collaborations between
Stravinsky and choreographer George Balanchine (both artists actually lived in LA for some time).
While dance in many different forms has long played a significant part of The Music Center’s almost
fifty year history, it was truly able to flourish with the founding of the dance series, rooted in the
vision to present inspiring and distinct experiences with internationally-renowned dance artists,
support the creation of new major dance works and provide thoughtful educational connections
between visiting artists, our audience and next generation’s dancers and patrons.
We have been able to soar beyond our dreams of ten years ago because of the courageous and
committed board of directors, the visionary leadership of Center Dance Arts established before the
first official season, the monumental and encouraging support from Glorya Kaufman received in 2009
as well as the sustaining gifts from the ever-growing corporations, foundations and subscribers.
We look forward to our next season as we strive to surprise, enlighten and inspire.

Balanchine has written: “Apollo—I look back on as the
turning point of my life. In its discipline and restraint, in
its sustained oneness of tone and feeling, the score was
a revelation. It seemed to tell me that I could dare not
use everything, that I, too, could eliminate.”
Apollo was the first classical ballet created and not simply

Fokine’s Les Sylphides. It was first performed by Diaghilev’s

Georges Bizet composed his Symphony in C when he was a 17-year-old
pupil of Charles Gounod at the Paris Conservatory. The manuscript
was lost for decades, and was published only after it was discovered in
the Conservatory’s library in 1933. George Balanchine first learned of
the long-vanished score from Stravinsky. He required only two weeks
to choreograph it as Le Palais de Cristal for the Paris Opera Ballet,
where he was serving as a guest ballet master. When he revived the
work the following year for its United States premiere, he simplified
the sets and costumes and changed the title.
Under the title Le Palais de Cristal, Symphony in C was given its World
Premiere by the Paris Opera Ballet at the Paris Opera House on July
28, 1947, danced by Lycette Darsonval, Tamara Toumanova, Micheline
Bardin, Madeleine Lafon, Alexandre Kalioujny, Roger Ritz, Michel

Marius Petipa completely re-choreographed
Le Corsaire for the 1899 production by the

the present productions are derived, and from
which the pas de deux, to music by Drigo, is
performed, mostly credited “after Petipa.”
Le Corsaire was given its United States
premiere by the Leningrad-Kirov Ballet at
the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, on
July 3, 1989, danced by Altynai Asylmuratova
(Medora) and Yevgeni Neff (Conrad).
Boston Ballet became the first non-Russian ballet
company to perform this work, entitled The Pirate
(Le Corsaire), at its premiere at the Wang Center,
Boston, on March 27, 1997 with choreography
by Konstantin Sergeyev, after Petipa, and staged
by Anna-Marie Holmes, Natalia Dudinskaya
and Vadim Denitsky. It was performed by
Natasha Akhmarova (Medora), Pollyana
Ribeiro (Gunlare), Robert Wallace (Conrad),
Laszlo Berdo (Birbanto), Patrick Armand (Ali
the Slave) and Arthur Leeth (Lankendem).
American Ballet Theatre’s Company Premiere
of Le Corsaire, with choreography by Konstantin
Sergeyev, after Petipa, and staging by AnnaMarie Holmes, with the assistance of Tatiana
Legat, Tatiana Terekhova and Sergei Berejnoi,
received its first performance on June 19, 1998,
at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York. Sets
and costumes were by Irina Tibilova, lighting was
by Mary Jo Dondlinger, and the production was
danced by Nina Ananiashvili (Medora), Ashley
Tuttle (Gulnare), Giuseppe Picone (Conrad), Angel
Corella (Birbanto), Jose Manuel Carreño (Ali the
Slave) and Vladimir Malakhov (Lankendem).

Prologue
A pirate ship, manned by Conrad, his
slave, and his friend Birbanto sails
toward Turkey.
ACT I: The Bazaar
Dealers and buyers fill a noisy
bazaar where slave girls are being
traded. Conrad and his men arrive as
Lankendem, the owner of the bazaar,
is selling girls. Conrad sees Medora,
a slave girl, and falls immediately
in love. Seyd, a pasha, arrives on
the scene amidst much fanfare.
Lankendem presents three young
women whom the pasha rejects.
Lankendem presents Gulnare, a lovely
slave girl, to the pasha and he buys
her. Finally, Lankendem presents
Medora, and everyone is entranced
by her beauty. The pasha buys her.
Conrad instructs his slave to steal
Medora back, and the pirates raid
the village and kidnap Lankendem.
ACT II: The Grotto
Conrad shows Medora his hideout.
Birbanto calls for all the pirates to
bring in their stolen bounty to the
grotto, as well as the slave girls and
Lankendem. Medora, Conrad, and his
slave dance to entertain the crew.
Afterward, Medora entreats Conrad, in
the name of their love, to free all the
slave girls. He agrees, but Birbanto
rebels against the idea and instead
persuades the pirates to riot against
Conrad. By the force of Conrad’s
commanding personality and physical
presence, he single-handedly instills
terror into the hearts of the pirates
and they abandon their mutinous
plan. Not to be thwarted, Birbanto
devises a new scheme. He sprays
a rose with a sleeping potion and
forces Lankendem to help him pass
the flower to Medora, who unwittingly
gives it to Conrad. He inhales its
aroma and falls into a drugged sleep.
The pirates return to the grotto and
attempt to capture Medora. While
struggling, she snatches a dagger and
cuts Birbanto’s arm. In the confusion,
Lankendem steals Medora back and
escapes. Birbanto is about to kill
Conrad but is interrupted by the
slave. Stunned and broken-hearted,
Conrad discovers Medora missing.
Birbanto feigns ignorance and swears
his loyalty to Conrad.
ACT III, Scene 1: The Pasha’s Palace
The playful Gulnare is interrupted
by Lankendem bringing in a veiled
Medora. The pasha is delighted that
Medora has been recaptured and
declares that she will become his
number one wife.
ACT III, Scene 2: Jardin Animé
Delighted by all his lovely women,
the pasha dreams of them in a
beautiful garden.
them to enter the palace. Medora
recognizes Conrad, disguised as
one of the pilgrims. Suddenly, the
pilgrims throw off their robes and
reveal themselves as pirates. Chaos
erupts within the palace. Conrad
and his men chase away the pasha,
his guard, and wives. They dance in
victory. Suddenly, Birbanto runs in
chasing Gulnare. They collide with
Conrad and Medora. Medora exposes
Birbanto as a traitor, and Conrad
shoots him. Conrad’s slave helps
Medora, Gulnare, and Conrad escape.
They flee to the ship.
ACT III, Scene 4: The Storm
The pirate ship sails upon a calm
sea. Conrad, at the helm, cradles
Medora in his arms. Suddenly
a fierce storm blows across as
lightning illuminates the darkening
sky. Gusting winds shred the sails
and a lightning bolt snaps the ship’s
mast in half. The ship sinks amidst
the relentless, turbulent waters.
Epilogue
As the wind subsides and the sea
calms itself, the moon rises in the
sky. It sheds light upon Conrad
and Medora, clinging to a rock and
offering thanks for their miraculous
survival, a testimony to the strength
of their love.
ACT III, Scene 3: The Pasha’s Palace
The pasha is awakened by the arrival
of Conrad, Birbanto, and the pirates,
disguised as pilgrims. He invites

Renae Williams Niles has played a
key role at The Music Center since
2004. As director of programming,
she was responsible for bringing
the best dance companies in
the world to our stages. Now,
as The Music Center’s newest
vice president of programming,
she oversees not just dance
but also outreach and community programs. We caught up
with Renae to chat about what
she has in store for future
programming at The Music Center.
mc: how are you adapting to your new
role as vice president of programming?
rwn: I’m
still very much in transition.
Such a big part of what we all are
involved in right now is planning for
the 50th anniversary. I’m hugely
excited for that and working with the
entire team on ensuring that the 50th
rwn: I love to give our audiences a
sense of discovery. So each season
I’ve tried to balance between
returning companies that everyone
knows and loves as well as new artists
they might not be as familiar with. I
look for distinct choreographic voices.
And even with a lot of those returning
companies there’s a joy when they can
bring something new and fresh.
mc: what’s your vision for glorya
kaufman presents dance at the music
center (kdmc) in the coming years?
rwn: What would be wonderful is to
continue to present major international work. My hope is that we can
continue to grow our commissioning
and co-commissioning of major projects,
which gives us visibility beyond the
immediate presentation. Also, I want
to continue to grow our educational
and outreach efforts tied to dance,
and expand the Artist-in-Residence
program to further our efforts in
K-12 educational programming.
mc: thanks for taking time to talk with
us, renae.
rwn:
My pleasure.
mc: what about your plans for other
areas of programming outside of dance,
such as grand park?
rwn: Grand Park is very collaborative
in terms of the partnerships that
they have been able to successfully
accomplish. We are certainly
continuing to animate the spaces
here on campus and use the park
when it’s available to us. Overall,
what will likely be an ongoing
thematic approach is active
participation. Being able to take
World City into the park each season,
for example, allows us to reach new
audiences and expand who we serve.
And some of our new programs
will be layered. For example, a
performance element might also
have a lounge where people can talk
and engage with each other or there
might be a film showing or a short
class before it.
The Music Center gratefully
acknowledges Glorya
Kaufman for her remarkable
support. Congratulations on

Jane Jelenko, a tour de force
for Center Dance Arts
After dedicating more than
a decade to growing the
organization, Jane Jelenko
steps down as president of
Center Dance Arts (CDA) this
season, leaving behind a legacy
of distinguished leadership,
enduring friendships, and a
vital organization in support of
Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance
at the Music Center.
was inspired by her love of dance and
by her tireless energy for connecting
other dance lovers. Jane is LA's most
consistent champion of dance in all
its forms. I have been impressed by
her elegance and eloquence in Board
meetings, CDA salons, Barnard Club
events, and shabbats. Jane knows how
to enjoy life and share her joy with
others. I can only hope to emulate the
kind of CDA President she has been for
the past ten years."
In 2000, with the building of Walt
Disney Concert Hall creating an
opportunity for more performances
at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Ms.
Jelenko joined a small, passionate
group of people trying to raise funds
for dance programming. A former
member of the Joffrey board who “felt
bereft” after they moved to Chicago,
Ms. Jelenko was eager to become
a charter member of the founding
board of CDA. She became president
in 2004 and continued leading CDA
to exceed all expectations, raising
more than $5 million for dance
presentations, including funds
for commissioning new work and
expanding community engagement.
Renae Williams Niles, Vice President
of Programming at The Music Center,
expressed her gratitude by saying,
“Jane is one of the most genuinely
committed leaders I know. She is so
passionate not only about what we do
here at The Center but about dance
in general - how it can transform and
empower as well as bring joy and
inspiration to many. It has been an
honor to work with CDA under Jane's
leadership and the only solace I have is
in my hope that she will continue to be
connected and involved as we look to
further our growth and positive impact
on the community.”
Perhaps Ms. Jelenko’s greatest
strength is in her role as a champion
ambassador, attracting and sustaining
other members, leaders, and dance
luminaries to help grow dance
programming at The Music Center. Her
powers of persuasion and enthusiasm
for dance are hard to resist. When
asked what she loves most about the
programs, Ms. Jelenko responds, “Renae
Williams Niles has built a truly world22 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINe
class program which offers diversity of
styles from the most refined classical
ballet to modern masterworks, to edgy
new work that challenges us and opens
us up to new experiences. I love that
it attracts a younger and more diverse
audience than any of the other art forms
presented on our campus. I love that
The Music Center was able to attract
the likes of Glorya Kaufman to support
our program so that it will continue
to thrive and bring the joy of dance to
future generations.”
The Music Center staff and Ms. Jelenko’s
peers are equally enthusiastic in
praising her commitment. Music Center
board member and CDA Chair Mattie
McFadden-Lawson says of her tenure,
“For ten years, Jane Jelenko has led CDA
with a clear vision and purpose. Through
her leadership, CDA has become a force
in the dance community. I applaud her
being both an excellent leader and team
player.” Catharine Soros, who will take
over as CDA President next season,
enthused, "From the moment I met Jane
I knew I had found a kindred spirit. I
Ms. Jelenko plans to continue as a CDA
board member, fully confident with the
leadership in place for next season.
“I am thrilled that I pass the baton to
such exemplary leaders as Catharine
Soros and Mattie Lawson.” She looks
forward to continuing to promote CDA
and dance in Los Angeles, and, in her
own words, “giving this great art form
a credible voice, advocating for its
rightful place at the table.”
The Music Center Welcomes
New Board Chair Lisa Specht
The Board of Directors of
The Music Center is pleased
to welcome Lisa Specht to
the position of board chair.
Formerly vice chair of The
Music Center since 2009, Ms.
Specht has served on The
Music Center board since
2007. In her new role, she
will work closely with The
Music Center board, staff and
resident companies on the
development of programming
and new initiatives as well as
planning for The Music Center’s
upcoming 50th anniversary.
A partner with the law firm of
Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP,
Ms. Specht provides developers,
corporations, institutions and

advice and representation on major
business, legal and public policy
matters. She has been recognized
as one of the “Most Prominent

the Los Angeles Business Journal and
is consistently included in the Best
Lawyers in America guide.
In making the announcement, Music
Center President & CEO Stephen D.
Rountree said, “We are privileged to
have a board composed of the best
business and community leaders,
who have a true passion for the arts.
Lisa Specht’s outstanding record
of civic leadership and support for
the arts and education will help
ensure The Music Center continues to
expand its role as a transformational
leader in bringing the community the
best in the performing arts.”
Highly active in the community and
a proponent of civic engagement,

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY,
The Music Center
Educating the Educators
SPOTLIGHT!
The familiar opening strains of Peter and the Wolf filled the room. The trill of a flute signaled the
bird’s arrival and an oboe responded as the duck entered the meadow. Last August, in Rehearsal
Room 4 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Margaret Coleman and Nan Borcherding, both teachers at
La Ballona Elementary School in Culver City, took their places and prepared to mime characters
from the iconic musical symphony.
On May 4, 2013, The Music Center’s
Dorothy Chandler Pavilion was
alive with big dreams, spectacular
performances, family, friends,
and nostalgia for Spotlight’s 25th
Anniversary Celebration. Hosted by
the dynamic Charlayne Woodard, the
finale performance showcased 20
phenomenal high school performing
artists and honored more than
2,300 who participated during the
year. Our incredible roster of judges
“We get a very positive response from
the children. They gain confidence.
Children who had hardly spoken
wanted to narrate the shadow puppet
poem in front of the school. Kids
who were very shy volunteered to be
narrators,” Coleman said. “It gives
them confidence in areas where they
are very insecure, especially those
who are English language learners,”
Borcherding added.

“Coming of Age”:
Spring Dance Partnership with Ramon C.
Cortines School of Visual and Performing
Arts and Gabriella Charter School
When meeting with the leadership at Ramon C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts
in downtown Los Angeles this spring, The Music Center was asked if we could help spark a long
term partnership between the high school and a local “feeder” middle school. This partnership
would promote the school to local, middle school parents as a viable option for high school that
will provide students with the skills and knowledge to make them college and career-ready
through quality academic and arts-based instruction. The Music Center also sought to provide
students from both schools with an experience that combined exploration of theme-based
content (that spanned both high school and middle school curricula) through the performing arts.

with both schools, twenty-one
4th -8th graders from Gabriella
Charter Middle School’s “Company

from Cortines High School’s

came together on May 29. The
students performed their three
part dance piece “Coming of Age,”
based on Renaissance themes
of individuality and identity
to an audience of community
members, students and parents.
In addition to the student program,
The Music Center organized a
Parent Reception the afternoon
before the final performance,
where parents and families of the
Gabriella students were led in a
comprehensive tour of the Cortines
campus and participated in a
question and answer session led
by the school’s principal, Dr. Norm
Isaacs and Assistant Principal, Sheri
Henderson. The Parent Reception
provided the middle school
parents a better understanding and
appreciation of the school and its
campus, as well as the opportunity
to take home applications!
With the success of this partnership,
The Music Center hopes to continue
to serve as a connector and support
more long term partnership
opportunities between schools
that will provide students with
appreciation and understanding
of the arts and access to the tools
necessary to become masters of
life and leaders in their various
communities and careers.
The Music Center Leadership Council is a
social and networking group of Southern
California's professional, business and
community leaders who share a passion
for the performing arts. The Leadership
Council supports arts education programs
at The Music Center with a special interest
in the Spotlight program. Members and
their guests enjoy thrilling performances
and a variety of exclusive events that take
place all over Los Angeles. Individual
memberships are available by invitation.
The Music Center Leadership Council was
founded by leading philanthropists in 1978
as Fraternity of Friends of The Music Center.

A natural fit seemed evident
between Gabriella Charter Middle
School, located in nearby Echo Park,
whose charter principles embrace
the use of dance in every area of
instruction, and Cortines High
School’s Dance Academy. The Music
Center, with the help of teacher
and administrative representatives
from both schools, provided these
school partners with a multi-session
program structure that culminated
in a combined dance performance
at the Cortines HS Spring Dance
Concert. To make this possible,
The Music Center also provided
Music Center Teaching Artist and
accomplished dancer/choreographer,
Elisha Wilson Beach, to work with
students and teachers to develop,
nurture and produce the content
connections and choreography.
