Bill Murphy
Biography
I am an Illustrator and Graphic Designer with twenty years
of experience, specializing in illustration and print design
including branding, advertisements, magazine layout,
flyers and brochures. I have experience with many Adobe
products including Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign,
and am currently working with the latest features of Adobe
Creative Cloud (CC). I have been a trainer, teacher and
mentor to both co-op students and co-workers.
My experience is not limited to print, as I have designed
templates and layouts for Rise Vision’s web-based digital
signage platform, as well as provided the layout and design
for the Happily Ever Active web site. I am enjoying some
of Adobe’s newest products for mobile and web, including
Edge (Reflow) and Muse.
Some of the brands with which I have worked include:
Mazda, Bell, Teletoon, Molson, Sears, Tommy Hilfiger,
Walmart, Zellers, New Line Cinema, Mississauga Ice Dogs,
Ottawa Senators, Toyota and more.

Project: Branding
I have done many branding projects over the years. You
can see some examples displayed here. Purple Alien
and billmurphy.ca is the branding I use for myself. I love
how a logo can be so diverse. Branding can be anything
from a simple-type logo to fully detailed, illustrated and
creative. It can be a combination of one or various designs
for different uses in different cases or situations. I also
enjoy the elements that accompany a brand that are not
necessarily part of the logo. They still follow the branding
concept. An example of this is the UFO icon in the Purple
Alien brand.

Project: Book Wookie
Design the brand of this book review and blogging
website. The site is done in WordPress that was originally
a template that I modified the colours of to better suit the
branding. I contributed and edited the graphic elements as
needed. The Illustration and feel for the mascot-icon was
also great fun to create in Adobe Illustrator from scratch. I
continued this branding when designing the business cards

Project: Happily Ever Active
Branded with the logo that created a fun art paint splat
in the corner of a square that could also be branded
throughout social media. Then I designed the fun, playful
look and feel for the website coordinating with a team
member for silly photography included in the banners, on
the website, and the business card design. I also worked
with the web programmer on graphic elements and design.
We maintained the fun playful style in the logo and within
the company. The website had to maintain a variety of
use cases. Examples include staff, typical web traffic, and
remembering the elderly as users.
Project: Active By Design
Active By Design is a branding project that was an offshoot
of the Happily Ever Active project. The company crates
artistic fun active projects in the community. I designed
the logo for various use cases and social branding.

while working at The Mississauga News. Ads ran
in many different publications from magazines
to newspapers. This project was unique in its
simplicity and hit the message for branding the
opening of their new store.

Project: Palma Pasta New Store
Designed many flyers and ads while at The Mississauga
News, including this example for Subaru of Mississauga,
a 4 page newspaper promotion that would be wrapped
around other flyers to increase probability of readership
upon delivery. This project was to use the national
Sumo campaign and embellish it to promote customer
appreciation at the Mississauga dealer. Many times I would
modify national ads for local businesses. Here I added
vine swirls and embellishments to grab the customer’s
attention and inspire the idea of getting a new car for
spring. I also kept the colours fun, using purple which
deviated from the national Sumo ads.

Project: Scarboro Mazda
Designed many newspaper ads, customer targeted mailouts, email blasts, flyers, vehicle magnets, vehicle
decals, digital signage and many large format signs inside and outside the showroom. I especially designed
many signs during the major renovation. Below you can see one of the renovation signs. The final size was
115” X 51”. At the right you can see a typical newspaper ad. This one also focused on the renovation. Next,
you can see samples I did of customer targeted mail-outs and email-blast. The following examples show
how I dealt with ads throughout a campaign’s life cycle and how to deal with size changes. After the initial
impact of an ad you can downsize to cut cost and still maintain the majority of the original campaign. For
many various reasons, size may have to change and in this example the only lost content is the map. I say
the larger is usually better but when it is necessary I still made it work getting the message across.

Project: Woodchester Nissan Woodchuck
This project really came back to my illustration
talents, as I created a woodchuck mascot for
Woodchester Nissan. It was used in their marketing
repeatedly, including window decals and store
signage along with regular print advertising.

Project: Team Chrysler Door Hangers
While at The Mississauga News I worked on many different
ads, flyers and promotions for Team Chrysler. This example
is the front and back of a door hanger design to promote
their loan approval service.

Project: Erin Mills Mitsubishi VIP Event
Designed many flyers and ads while at The Mississauga
News including this example for Erin Mills Mitsubishi. A
4 page newspaper wrap promotion that would be wrapped
around other flyers to increase probability of readership
upon delivery. This project was to promote the new VIP
Sales Event. It included advertorial marketing for the new
i-MiEV electric vehicle. I also designed the VIP logo badge
for use in future branding of the VIP program to Erin Mills
Mitsubishi customers.

Project: Dixie Mitsubishi New Lancer
Designed many flyers and ads while at The Mississauga
News including this example for Dixie Mitsubishi. This
project was to promote the new Lancer and customer
Loyalty Program.

Project: Town & Country Market
This ad was designed while at The Mississauga News and
really shows the variety that the market has to offer. This
ran repeatedly in many different publications.

Designed many flyers and ads while at The
Mississauga News including this example for 401
Dixie Infiniti. This project was to maintain Infiniti high
scale feeling while implementing a spring theme in
a fun way. We also redesigned their base bar to try
and inform people in western Toronto that 401 Dixie
Infiniti is not far way.

Project: Garden Sun - Home Decor/Fashion
This is another illustration style that I am having fun with.
I love patterns and vector art. I love to experiment and
try new things. This shows my interest in home decor,
and fashion. You can see here in these examples I have
versions as framed art and one implementation applying
it as pillows. The samples experiment with different
fabrics and ideas. I can see this design used in many
implementations. It could be used for dishes, lamp shades,
duvets, sheets, pillow cases, carpets, and light boxes. I
even have an idea to apply this to a sun dress.

Project: BorderLine Magazine
While at The Missisauga News I designed many CBSA (Canada
Border Services Agency) internal staff magazines. The magazine’s
objective was to inform staff of different job related changes as
well as social activities and staff announcements. Content included
personal and work related events to bring the CBSA staff together
and keep them informed. Issues would come out 2-4 time per
year and range from 12-24 pages. Originally, I designed a larger
newspaper format, and then we updated the design, moving to a
nice magazine-sized 8.125” x 10.625” (as shown in the example).
At this time, we started printing in French also, putting the French
section upside down and backwards in the same publication, thus
doubling the page count.

While at The Mississauga News I worked
on many different magazines. The Blue
Line Magazine was one project (The
official Magazine of the Mississauga
St. Michael’s Majors OHL team) that
was 88 pages, digest size. I designed
all aspects of this project working with
representatives to obtain editorial
material and ads. Most ads needed to
be reformatted to fit this publication
and some of the ads I designed myself.
The cover art is a cropped image
of Stuart Percy. The background I
completely created in Photoshop to
simulate the boards and crowd of fans.
In the first of the smaller samples, inside
the magazine, you can see that I subtly
used this background again with Dylan
DeMelo in front to accompany his two
page interview.
