Depending on the Federal State and postal
zone, considerable fluctuations occur with
regard to model, type and model year as
part of the vehicle registration process. This
in turn makes it increasingly difficult for the
wholesale trade and workshops to always
have the correct part in stock. Individual,
customised stocking suggestions are the
answer!
The suggestions for German customers
are made on the basis of current vehicle
population data compiled by the German
Federal Motor Vehicle Registration Agency (KBA) in Flensburg. It is possible for
us to break down these KBA data by model and production year for the whole of
Germany, down to individual postcode
areas so that we can then make a suitable
recommendation.
For foreign customers, the stocking suggestions are made based on NUTS-3
data. These are categorised according
to the registration figures for individual
models, types per model year up to the

TecDoc type numbers at country level to
regional level.

New: Steering column switch
for PSA models
EU-wide coverage of around 100 million registrations
We are now offering steering column
switches in the Elparts range with builtin clock spring for the airbag. Exclusively
for Europe-wide demand. This applies for
around 100 million registrations for the
brands Citroën and Peugeot in various
versions from manufacturing year 2000
onwards.
The special feature of this steering column
switch is the built-in clock spring for the
airbag. The clock spring connects the rigid
steering column with the movable steering
wheel and the gas generator. If the clock
spring needs replacing, a warning light in
the instrument panel lights up, telling the
driver to seek out a workshop immediately
and have the entire control lever replaced.
The replacement should be carried out by
a trained specialist, as the clock spring
cartridge contains the electrical connection to the airbag, which provides the electrical impulse to activate the airbag in the
event of an accident. If the connection is
broken due to incorrect installation, the
airbag is useless.

Depending on the vehicle equipment, it
is possible to install an additional module
when replacing the control lever for controlling the cruise control system and multimedia control. However, this only works
if the vehicle control unit recognises this
module. The vehicle must therefore have
been fitted with this special equipment in
the factory. If the equipment is present, the
additional module can simply be clipped
on to the Herth+Buss switch.

The brake wear indicator warns in good time
Two functions are distinguished:
Closing contact: If the warning contact makes contact with the brake pad or vehicle
mass due to the worn pad, the electric circuit closes and the control lamp lights up.
Opening contact: The cable of the warning
contact is worn. This interrupts the closed
electric circuit which is functioning as indicator and the control lamp lights up.

No brake pad, no braking effect – insufficient brake pads and its dangerous consequences can be reduced to this simple but
clear statement.
A so-called warning contact was already
integrated into brake blocks at the end of
the 1970ies, which made itself noticed by
annoying screeching once the pads were
worn. At the beginning of the nineties, this
became more comfortable in line with the
progressing electrification of the motor vehicle. Today the electronic brake wear indicator lights up on the dashboard as quiet
but consistent helper.
Only high-quality brake wear indicators as
provided by us can withstand the extreme
heat generated during braking events. The
most recent thermoset material is used,
whose heat resistance is about the same
as that of the brake pad.
Brake wear indicators are typical parts subject to wear and tear, and should always be
replaced when replacing brake pads.

New ignition coil stays cool
Cooling element for optimal heat dissipation
The ignition coil is part of the ignition system in the petrol engine and operates in
the same way as a spark indicator. When
the ignition is switched on, electricity flows
through the primary winding of the ignition coil, causing a magnetic field to form
around it. The resulting power loss means
that sufficient cooling and good thermal
contact to the body work are required.

Coil springs, the connecting part between
the wheels and the chassis, must fulfil high
safety-specific requirements during travel.
They have to compensate for unevenness
in the road and help guarantee driving
comfort. They also ensure that the wheels
maintain safe contact with the ground at all
times regardless of the road surface. They
guarantee that the drive, brake and shear
force is transferred correctly to the road.
Damaged springs shouldn't be underestimated as a safety risk, as they have a direct
impact on the driving characteristics and
safety of the vehicle. Yet damaged springs
are often only detected in the workshop.
The spring usually breaks in the first coil,
so that the broken piece often lies unnoticed in the spring washer. Typical results include slight changes in driving behaviour
and a creaking, cracking noise development when steering.
The right spring for every model
If the coil spring is too soft, the brake effect
is reduced, and if it is too hard, it doesn't
provide enough suspension and the vehicle loses contact with the ground. Selecting
the right spring for vehicle safety is therefore essential!

On modern passenger vehicles, drum
brakes are almost only found on the rear
axles. Although there is a trend towards
mounting disc brakes on the rear axle too,
there are compelling arguments for continuing to use or returning to the drum
brake.
The design of disc brakes offers different
advantages. One major advantage of the
disc brake is the automatic self-adjustment
of the brake pads. The maintenance required for disc brakes is therefore restricted to
checking the wear on the brake pads and
brake discs.
Unfortunately, drum brakes don't offer
this advantage. The brake shoes are pulled
back by springs, pushing back the pistons
of the brake cylinder at the same time until they have reached their start position. If
the brake pad gets worn, the travel path to
touch the brake drum gradually gets bigger. This changes the transmission ratio
(the actuation force of the brake) and eventually even the response time. Ultimately,
the required pedal travel becomes longer.
Mechanical brake shoe adjusters have
been available for decades for this reason.
For the drum brake to work correctly, it is
essential that all parts are in the right place
and in the correct position. A spring which
is hooked in incorrectly can easily block the
entire mechanism.

Particularly in these fast-moving times,
when vehicle manufacturers are also
launching new models on the market at
ever shorter intervals, standing still is
the same as moving backwards for our
company. 2012 will therefore be a year
of: development and optimisation for the
R+D team.

vehicle usage in our database, we manage to live up to our first-to-market promise
and make sure that we have the right spare
part in stock for the very latest models in
the market.
What is happening at Herth+Buss?
In the R+D department, everything revolves around the issue of "Which part is right
for which vehicle?". In order to answer this
question for the benefit of our customers,
we are constantly working to build up and
fine-tune our own, detailed vehicle stock.
This is done using the monthly list of new
vehicle launches from the Federal Motor
Transport Authority (KBA) and our own extensive research.

Water pump+timing belt kit now
available as a package
It is now common practice in workshops
to change the water pump along with the
timing belt. Although it may seem like a
scam on the surface because the water
pump is actually still working, this approach may actually end up saving customers money.
Why? Timing belts have to be replaced
at regular intervals (between 60,000 and
150,000 kilometres depending on the vehicle type). If this is not done and the timing belt stops working correctly, the
valves controlled by the timing belt are not
activated at the right times. This reduces
the performance of the engine and damages the engine over the long term.
It is therefore important to replace the timing belt in good time. Depending on the
vehicle manufacturer and the engine, the
timing belt may also drive the water pump.
In vehicles such as these, the water pump
is often damaged if only the timing belt is
replaced, because it is subjected to new
forces which the ageing pump can no longer withstand. This causes the water pump
to fail, and the vehicle has to be returned
to the workshop for repair. The workshop
tries to prevent these frequently occurring
double costs by replacing the water pump
along with the timing belt.
We are therefore now offering water pump
kits containing timing belt kits along with
the relevant water pumps.

Improving product quality every day
Since March 2011, have had our own TestCenter for starters and alternators. This has
enabled us to further improve our product
quality in these particular product groups.
On the one hand, this is because we only
ever add products to our range if we have
thoroughly tested them ourselves and assessed them as having the right quality.
On the other hand, it is because the relevant supplier receives immediate feedback
if there are problems with the test results,
and can therefore optimize the relevant
product right away.
Another important area of use for the TestCenter is identifying the causes of faults
following complaints. We have found that
only half of all complaints are justified.

As all complaint assessments now
come from the same place, they are
based on standardised testing criteria, making the results directly comparable with one another. As we now
have direct contacts in-house, with
shorter information paths, our complaint handling is now much faster too.
Another important task of the TestCenter is to continuously monitor the quality of the starters and alternators. The test
bench is state of the art and even detects
computer signals that other equipment
would miss.
