News from The Chiofaro Company Celebrate a New Direction in Art
Celebrate a New Direction in Art. Up. Renowned Artist & Pioneer Janet Echelman’s Aerial Sculpture Adorns Greenway The Chiofaro Company is pleased to be a collaborator in the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway Conservatory’s newest attraction – a monumental aerial sculpture by internationally acclaimed local artist, Janet Echelman. This incredibly intricate creation is a mustsee art experience for visitors from near and far from now until October of this year. Along with the Intercontinental Hotel and 125 High Street, the 28th floor of One International Place serves as one of the anchor points for the approximately one-ton structure. © Melissa Henry Janet Echelman is known for her soft, billowing sculptures the scale of buildings that respond to the forces of nature — wind, water and light — and become inviting focal points for civic life. Recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship, Echelman was named an Architectural Digest Innovator for “changing the very essence of urban spaces.” Echelman’s whimsical work is a monumentally-scaled, knotted-fiber sculpture suspended hundreds of feet over the central section of the Greenway. The enormous size of the installation assures that the artwork can be seen from many directions, both up close and far away. This ultra-lightweight artwork visually knits together the fabric of the city with art. In daylight, it casts shadow drawings on the ground, and at night it becomes a beacon with dynamic colored light. The dramatic sculptural piece changes with the wind and lighting conditions during the day and night so it stays fresh and engaging. Inside This Issue of VantagePoint... Still, Boston persevered – as it always does – emerging stronger and more resilient as a result. Our New England Patriots brought home a fourth Vince Lombardi Trophy after a nail-biting win against the Seattle Seahawks. Boston was also honored to be chosen as the U.S. 2024 Winter Olympic Bid, validation of our city’s outstanding leadership and global presence. We at The Chiofaro Company draw inspiration from Boston’s great accomplishments by embracing our role in bringing unique experiences to our Tenants. Our Portfolio of amenities continued to expand over the winter, bringing some exciting additions to the International Place community. Republic Fitness quickly established itself as an elite Boston health club and Kane’s Handcrafted Donuts celebrated an extremely successful Grand Opening with endless lines and back-to-back sellouts. And now, here we are. The snow has melted. The Greenway is alive and full of color once again, particularly thanks to Janet Echelman’s wondrous aerial creation anchored to the 28th floor of One International Place. Our outdoor festivities are afoot. There are wonderful things ahead of us in the coming season and we look forward to celebrating it all with you. Sincerely, Don Chiofaro and your friends at The Chiofaro Company Great Spaces at International Place Spectrum Equity With a crisp, clean and ultra-modern feel, Spectrum Equity’s space on the 35th floor of One International Place is a stunning example of fresh, streamlined design. Marvel at the exquisite contrast of milk white marble, dark wood cabinetry and accents of green. You will instantly feel warm, welcome and energized within the walls of Spectrum Equity making it a perfect environment for personnel and clients alike. “As a tenant at One International Place since 1997, Spectrum is happy to be renewing a long-term relationship and excited to have taken new space on the 35th Floor,” Chris Mitchell, Managing Director of Spectrum Equity, remarked. We are equally thrilled to have Spectrum in our tenant roster and are positively impressed by this truly great space! Tenants in the News Many International Place tenants have been acknowledged in Boston Business Journal’s 2015 Book of Lists, published in January. Waste, Water, and Energy-Saving Tips for the Office In connection with our overall mission of energy reduction please help us reduce International Place’s environmental footprint by producing less trash, and by using energy and water more efficiently in the office. Collectively, seemingly small actions can make a big contribution toward slowing climate change. You can begin helping by following these simple, no- and low-cost tips: • Immediately alert building managers to any leaky or broken faucets or running toilets, so they can be promptly fixed. One faucet that leaks one drop per second can waste 2,700 gallons of water per year, and a leaky toilet can waste about 200 gallons of water every day. • Purchase only ENERGY STAR-qualified office equipment, which uses 30-75% less energy than typical equipment. Talk to your office manager about making this a standard policy for your company. • Light office space only when necessary. Use only daylight whenever it is sufficient, and turn off lights in offices and conference rooms that are not occupied. • Blocked vents make ventilation systems work harder and waste energy. Clear the areas near vents of furniture, file cabinets, and stacks of paper. • Dress appropriately for the season. The temperature maintained in the office is lower in the winter than in the summer. This reduces the amount of energy required for heating and cooling, and enhances employee comfort. Sidewalk Sam, aka Robert Guillemin, passed away peacefully on January 26. Mr. Guillemin became a celebrity in Boston by creating art on the city’s streets in the 1970’s. Sidewalk Sam was President of ArtStreet, Inc., a charitable educational organization that joins with government agencies, cultural and community organizations, corporation, non-profits and arts enthusiasts to create arts festivals, cultural events and participatory community projects that bring people together creatively. Mr. Guillemin attended Boston College and was elected freshman class president. He finished his bachelor’s degree at the University of Illinois and received a master’s of fine arts degree at Boston University. Travelling to Paris, he worked at the Louvre and studied at the Cole des Beaux Arts. Affectionately known as “Sidewalk”, he and his wonderful wife Tina were frequent visitors to International Place, where he was invited to replicate famous paintings or any of his favorite works of art on the exterior plaza areas. He loved to come to International Place because he enjoyed meeting the tenants and talking with them as they passed by. He often commented on how well received he was by the International Place community. IP Snipits... Boston Ballet performed excepts from its beloved Nutcracker and Swan Lake productions at our annual International Place Holiday Event in December. A great time was had by all; always a welcome treat to have the combined talent of the dancers as our guests. As a participant in the Boston Harbor Association’s “Winter on the Waterfront” Program, IP boasted an ice sculpture of an adorable seven foot polar bear! Ice sculptures accented several areas of the Greenway, Faneuil Hall, and Financial District on New Year’s Eve to the delight of visitors celebrating the New Year. The eighth annual ICycle Event was held in February on IP’s main plaza. The all-day outdoor spinning marathon raised money for HomeStart Inc., an organization devoted to ending homelessness. Don Chiofaro, Janet Wu and Danielle Vollmar were some of the local celebrities that rode in the cold and snow during the event. Wally the Green Monster and Pat the Patriot were also on hand to say hello to everyone. The snow removal efforts at International Place did not go unnoticed. Throughout a grueling winter and back to back storms, our snow removal crew, spearheaded by Jose Chaves of DTZ, went above and beyond to ensure that our tenants and guests had clean and easy access to the building from all points. IP was host to Wediko Children’s Services 4th Annual Climb for Kids Stair Climb Event held on April 12. Participants climbed 46 flights of stairs to raise money for the organization, which offers support to children and families struggling to overcome social, emotional, and academic challenges. Manicube, the Boston based mobile manicure service for both women and men, visits International Place on Mondays and Thursdays. Manicube is also available to provide services right in your office.
