On page 18, we hear how fate lead Deb Doucet to her new home and a fresh start after life threw her a devastating curve ball. In our Home and Builder on page 32, we meet Ken and Liz Lamming and their adorable granddaughter in their unique Guildcrest dream home, built by Algoma Custom Builders in Prince Township. We have Style Picks (pages 14 and 16) to help make your house a welcoming home. Whether you love to entertain or desire a peaceful retreat to gather your thoughts after a hectic day, try the healing properties of unique crystals you’ll find at Tammy Dean’s. If you are looking for that one-of-a-kind piece of silver jewelry for yourself or someone special, or just need to light the way in the dark, you’ll find what you need right here within Algoma. Our Comfort Zone on page 28 brings you a fun shopping experience and a chance to say hello to some furry friends at an alpaca farm near Thessalon. You’ll find completely Canadian decorating suggestions for your home (page 40) and a crafty idea on how to turn a beloved sweater that no longer fits but you can’t bear to part with into cosy cushions (page 42). Consider making our delicious Ginger Chocolate Bark (page 50) if you are struggling with what to give me for Christmas this year. It’s been a busy year and we enjoyed meeting Designer Kimberley Seldon here in the Soo at the Design and Diabetes event. Kimberley shared with us this valuable piece of advice “determine a room’s function and needs first and then choose paint colour last.” Thanks Kimberley! I wish everyone a wonderful winter season. OH_Algoma_Winter_2013_w_ads.indd 11 12-12-07 11:05 AM e d i t o r ’s n o t e “Serenity is not freedom from the storm but peace amid the storm.” –Anonymous W WHEN I WAS 11, I WANTED TO KNIT. My mother tried to teach me but I just couldn’t get it and she finally gave up. “You’re too young,” she said. “Wait until you’re older.” That did it! I was not too young! So I practised, casting off and unravelling over and over until finally I could knit. By the time I was in Grade 8, I was actually pretty good. I knit a pink shoe bag complete with a beautiful cable stitch for my Home Economics class and got an A+. I began to knit slippers and hats, mitts and afghans. I pored over my mother’s back issues of McCall’s Needlework & Crafts and Woman’s Own magazines. I learned to adapt Barbie doll patterns to make them more modern. They were my favourite to make – even as I got older and had a few nieces and then daughters of my own. I knit scarves and sweaters for Christmas gifts, tea cosies and doggie sweaters for church bazaars and even dolls, doilies and cushions for my home. Then I discovered two things. One was the Internet. The other was carpal tunnel. I exchanged my needles for a mouse. Now, years later, when there’s nothing better to do on a blustery, cold winter day than stay in a warm, snuggly house with the woodstove blazing, I get the urge to knit. Seeing deliciously soft skeins of alpaca wool also makes me want to pick up my needles again. You’ll see what I mean when you catch a glimpse of that alpaca yarn in our Comfort Zone feature on page 28. You’ll also find a yummy chocolate recipe on page 50. Be sure to read the stories of our homeowners this month too (pages 18 & 32). We’re so grateful to them for opening up their homes and sharing their stories with us. There’s a lot more in this issue of OUR HOMES Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma and when you’re done reading, take some time to enjoy the winter, whether you’re outside or in. I’ll probably be inside – maybe even knitting. Just one alpaca sweater. For me. Whatever you’re doing, have a wonderful winter! Up until a few years ago, Deb had the perfect life. One of a set of triplets born bor to Earl and Claudette Berlinghoff, she’d sh spent much of her childhood in the th limelight. “Every time we licked an ice cream cone we got our picture taken,” she laughs. ta As a teen, Deb worked at the Purple Lantern restaurant. It was P there that she met co-worker Don t Doucet who asked her to dance at a D staff party. The rest was history – at least for 22 years or so. Life was good. police officer. The couple bought a lovely good Don became a polic century home and had two beautiful daughters. Then in May, 2006 – Mother’s Day – Don went to work and it all ended. The police cruiser in which he was a passenger was broadsided. He died in hospital a short time later. For six months Deb mourned deeply and finally decided she needed to get her life back. “He’d have wanted me to choose life,” Deb says. Eventually, she went back to the waitressing job she had years earlier at Ernie’s Coffee Shop and began the slow process of getting back into the real world. “Just when you think you’re better, there’s another stage of grieving,” she says. The home she’d shared with her husband was no longer comfortable. After a couple of years, Deb decided it was time to sell. She planned a few renovations before listing the home in 2008 and that’s when she found a shiny quarter – the first of several she’d find. She spotted the quarter on the floor and reached down to pick it up. It was dated 2006 and it was faceless. She put it away, not really sure what to think. Over the next few years, she found more quarters. Though only the first one was faceless, they were all dated 2006, the year Don died. She even found one in the empty hallway of her new home as she prepared to move in 2010. Were they messages from her husband? She shrugs. “I don’t know. What else could it be?” Continued on page 20 TOP: The Berlinghoff triplets, (left to right) Brenda, Paula and Deb. LEFT: Deb at the entrance of her home. Deb was out driving when the Shouldice stone exterior of this Parkdale Drive home first caught her eye. The home had been built by Franco Masonry Ltd. in 2005. She decided to buy it. Later, as she walked around the home in preparation to move in, she and her sister Christine (Archibald) noticed the number on the meter box. It was 219, Don’s badge number. “Right then, I felt like I was doing the right thing,” she says. She was also attracted to the unfinished lower level, which meant Deb could design it to her specifications. That included building an in-home hair salon where she could do her family and friends’ hair. All three of the triplets are hair stylists. Deb also designed a large dressing room/walk-in closet with the help of Richard Tremblay. Materials for this room and for the bulk of the renovations came largely from Soo Mill Buildall. Dura-ceramic flooring 20 o u r h o m e s OH_Algoma_Winter_2013_w_ads.indd 20 w i n t e r in the lower level came from Color Your World while the dressing room carpet is from Flooring Liquidators. There’s plenty of space on both floors of the home for entertaining. On the lower level, a selection of oversized sofas and chairs provide plenty of seating while a bar (Mio’s Furniture Fashions) and billiard table (Northern Fireplace & Pools Ltd.) complete the space. Other furnishings in the home are from Leon’s Furniture, Pileria’s Interiors and Storey Home Furniture. Stairs lead up from the lower level to the street-level foyer and then up to the spacious open-concept main floor. “I like having people over to eat. I love to cook and this kitchen is awesome for that,” Deb says. French doors lead out to a private deck Deb designed with the help of Mike Bruni. The deck extends the full width of the back of the house and drops down a few steps to the hot tub (Superior Spas) area. Opening the master bedroom’s double doors, one is greeted by walls painted in rich, dark colours (Benjamin Moore’s Peerage and Nightfall). The matching en suite features both a Jacuzzi tub (NEPSCO Electrical & Plumbing Supply) and a shower. Deb worked with her sister Christine, who’s also a designer, to paint the whole home with paint from Soo Mill. The main areas of the home are painted in brown and gold tones – colours that Deb finds soothing. “I like the soft, welcoming feel of these colours plus they don’t go out of style,” she says. At first Deb worried the 3,600 sq. ft., three-bedroom home might be too big. “It’s for my family and friends,” she says. “Everyone’s welcome here. Even if I’m not home, I tell them – come and use it. It’s here,” she says. She also hopes her daughters will eventually be bringing grandchildren to visit. Moving to Canada in the late 70’s he worked for Rico’s Restaurant, which he later purchased in the 80’s. Changing the restaurant name to Arturo’s in the early 90’s he relocated the restaurant from Spring Street to Gore Street then to its current location on Queen Street. In the small country store at the front of the house, Donna Marshall stocks a wide range of products from her own herd as well as giftware and specialty foods. PRODUCTS: “I wanted to have everything as local as possible,” says Donna. In addition to her alpaca products, she carries the work of local artists and craftspeople and a range of specialty food products sourced in Canada, from loose tea to gluten-free bread mixes. “People are surprised to see how much I have here,” she says. She even has custom-designed items, such as alpaca-themed etched-glass wineglasses and coasters made by local artist Joanne Nicholls. Eventually, Donna would like to have an even wider range of alpaca-themed items for sale. STYLE: Donna’s store offers the whole alpaca farm experience. A window in the south wall looks out onto the paddocks, where the alpacas graze. People visiting the store are welcome to go out to the fence and watch the wooly animals, or even take a guided tour into the paddock and meet the animals. “I’m thinking about putting in tables by the fence next year,” Marshall says. “People just want a place to sit and watch the alpacas.” Continued on page 30 28 o u r h o m e s OH_Algoma_Winter_2013_w_ads.indd 28 w i n t e r 2 0 1 2 / 2 0 1 3 12-12-05 7:52 PM New Home Construction 705-949-5540 Tom Feifel .%7(/-%35.$%2#/.3425#4)/. 154 Third Line East 170 Third Line East $309,900.00 (inc. lot + HST) 1,150 sq’ hi-rise, 2 bathrooms, 3 bedrooms. On Tuesday, there’s a complete home erected. Best yet, the quality is top-notch. That’s what Ken and Liz Lamming got when they decided to partner with Algoma Custom Builders to construct their dream house. The local contractor deals with pre-fabricated homes, built by Guildcrest Homes near Ottawa then transported to their destination in sections. For the Lammings, who live in Prince Township, their house arrived in five pieces. Algoma Custom Builders put the sections together. Completed in 2010, the end result is a 2,200 sq. ft. estate the family is proud to call home. “It was really exciting to see the process,” says Liz. Algoma Custom Builders, fully certified under the Tarion Home Warranty Corp., works with its clients to cover all the bases of building. The Lammings had their own design – something the couple felt was the best fit for their lifestyle – then worked with the builder to tweak it accordingly. Once a design is finalized, the blueprints are sent to Guildcrest, which builds the home in its indoor facility in Morewood, Ontario. That included the hardwood flooring and some plumbing and painting. Friends helped tie in the drywall sections on the interior and install the exterior siding. Plumbing and electrical supplies came from NEPSCO Electrical & Plumbing Supply. This is one of the many benefits of going with a pre-fabricated home, according to Joel Chisholm, president of Algoma Custom Builders. “It gives the owners a chance to do as much or as a little as they want,” he says. The end result is that money tends to go further, adds Chisholm, who’s been building homes for well over two decades. Another benefit, he says, is that the home is built indoors, out of the elements. As well, the construction can be more efficient. “When your home arrives, you can start things like painting and flooring in just a day or two,” says Chisholm. “It relieves a lot of the stress of the building process.” With Guildcrest able to build pretty well any design their clients want, it seems fitting that the company’s motto is: “Your home, your design.” The Lammings’ design, for instance, was largely open-concept. The kitchen, containing Sears appliances and lighting from Home Depot, is located off the dining room and great room. Flooring throughout is from Superior Tile & Floor Coverings. Ginette Breton (Bellevue Cabinetry & Interiors) helped Liz style the home. She picked up accessories from Winners and IDA Drug Marts to complement what the couple already owned. Most of their furnishings are from Leon’s Furniture and Storey Home Furniture. “When you have good quality furnishings like the Lammings have, you can simply tie in the old with the new,” says Breton. She added grey throw pillows to the sofa, slipcovers on the wingback chairs, and a few new accessories to bring it all together. On many Sundays, the couple’s children, grandchildren and parents – Ken’s mother and Liz’s father – often swing by for a visit and a meal. Other times, the crowd is a bit larger, like the party held on election night in 2010 when Ken became Reeve, or that same year when he turned 60. In both cases, the company numbered more than 20, and the design of the house meant hosting was done with ease. Continued on page 36 Continued on page 35 o u r h o m e s OH_Algoma_Winter_2013_w_ads.indd 35 w i n t e r 2 0 1 2 / 2 0 1 3 35 12-12-05 7:53 PM home & builder In the winter months, the Lammings and their guests can cosy up near the fireplace (Propane Depot Inc.) or in the great room, which features heated flooring, providing comfort for all. When not entertaining guests, Ken can often be found doing Prince Township work at his desk in the office/hobby room, a place rich with sports memorabilia, most of it Toronto Maple Leafs. The exterior of the Lammings’ home also draws attention with red siding (Lyons TIM-Br Mart), colourful plants (New North Greenhouses Inc.) and outdoor furniture and accessories. The exterior stands out even more with a double-wide garage door from Hermiston & Sons Overhead Doors, eaves from Seamless Eavestrough, and hardscapes from Thayer Lumber Company Inc. When looking out the large window in the sunroom, the Lammings often see wildlife roaming their yard – anything from deer and rabbits to weasels. “That’s one of the many perks of living out here,” says Liz. “We love the open space.” Continued on page 38 LEFT: This wine room was a must for Ken, an avid winemaker. Marie. “You can live in the country, but you’re only a few minutes to the city,” says Ken, who moved to Prince Township with Liz in the late 1970s and was first elected as a councillor shortly thereafter. “It’s the perfect location.” With a spot that fits the family to perfection, coupled with the quality of their house itself, the Lammings are one of many satisfied customers to partner with Algoma Custom Builders. Since the company erected its first pre-fabricated home in 1996, its popularity has risen. This comes as no surprise to veteran homebuilder Frank Naccarato, who partnered with Chisholm and joined Algoma Custom Builders in 2006. In fact, Naccarato predicts more and more people will turn to this style. “It makes it a lot easier to get a home built,” he says. “It’s a custom design, and it’s delivered on time.” OH TOP LEFT: Ken with Joel Chisholm, President of Algoma Custom Builders on the front veranda. CANADIAN B Y YA N I C S I M A R D W PHOTO BY BRANDON BARRE Whether you’re from Canada or not, it’s hard for anyone not to be inspired by the true North and its beautiful elements, which we are lucky enough to find in our own backyard, the great outdoors. Here are my three favourite ways to incorporate our heritage into our homes. 1. THE USE OF FABRIC: Add Canadian character and charm to your home with the simple use of textiles. Glamwood: Nero Tile from Stone Tile Inc. Woodgrain fabric: Cinnabar from Robert Allen If you’re looking for another option next to the real thing, there are many imposter materials that mimic the natural look and feel of wood. Subway Paintable Wallpaper from Graham & Brown Point Blanket by The Hudson’s Bay Company 40 o u r h o m e s OH_Algoma_Winter_2013_w_ads.indd 40 w i n t e r Plaid Upholstery: Whether it be gingham, tartan, or tattersall, this popular pattern consisting of several crossed horizontal and vertical lines (usually in two or more colours) speaks directly to the essence of Canadian settlers. My favourite way to incorporate it in décor is with upholstery. I personally prefer it in smaller doses, such as for sofa pillows or dining room seats, however a club chair completely covered looks amazing as well. Cosy Throws: Curling up on the sofa on a cold winter’s day wouldn’t be the same without one of these. Here are my three favourite classics: UÊ Point Blanket: It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t start with this iconic blanket by The Bay – this wool Point blanket dates back to the 18th century and used to be traded. It continues to be a number one seller and is sold exclusively by The Hudson’s Bay Company. UÊ Faux Fur: Fox, mink or coyote – these Canadian creature-mimicked furs can be the perfect Canuck-inspired addition to your space for added comfort and even luxuriousness. UÊ Matelassé: Meaning quilted, padded or cushioned, and normally referring to hand-quilted textiles. It is meant to mimic the style of hand-stitched Marseilles, a type of quilt made in Provence, France. Incorporating these fabrics into your décor can be the subtle hint of pattern and texture you’re looking for. 2 0 1 2 / 2 0 1 3 12-12-05 7:55 PM PHOTO BY BRANDON BARRE Taking inspiration from the great outdoors: acorns, feathers, ornithological prints. Create a rustic vibe with historical wooden items; antique skis, or a weathered sled. 2. THE USE OF WOOD: Nothing warms up a space quite like the use of natural wood. Walls: I particularly like walls sheltered in large, real-wood planks. Douglas fir or cedar – both known for their distinctive grain patterns and tight knots – are each suitable choices when it comes to selecting the type of wood to use. Accessories: Dress up the inside or the surrounding area of your fireplace with logs of wood – even without the use of fire, this actually does create a feeling of warmth too. 3. THE ADDITION OF ANTIQUES: If the northern vibe is the look, an old piece of Canadian history is most definitely calling. Usually an item made of wood, such as an old sled, pair of skis or a rocking chair will feel the most rustic and true to the heritage. And one of my favourite holiday traditions is poring over cookbooks looking for inspiration for this year’s homemade gifts from my kitchen. Nothing is sweeter than stirring, swirling and baking up tasty treats to wrap and deliver to friends, family, co-workers, teachers and other special folks in my life. While the cookies, candies and breads I bake may vary from year to year, a staple gift from my kitchen is chocolate bark. It’s appealing because of its simplicity and opportunity for variations. Plus, it’s chocolate – and who doesn’t love the gift of chocolate? There are few ingredients involved, so I like to splurge a little and choose the best chocolate I can find. Dark chocolate is my favourite base for bark – its rich, deep flavour complements the roasted nuts and sweet fruits that dot the surface. But milk chocolate and white chocolate (or perhaps all three!) work wonderfully as well. As for the nuts and fruit, anything goes. Peanuts, cashews, pecans, pistachios, hazelnuts, apricots, cranberries, raisins, cookie bits, candy pieces, pretzels, marshmallows – you get the point! Stick to three toppings at most so that each flavour gets a chance to shine without getting muddled in the mix. For this year’s bark, I’m going with the combination of dark chocolate, almonds and candied ginger – a little bit toasty, a little bit spicy and perfectly decadent. Happy holidays! 50 o u r h o m e s OH_Algoma_Winter_2013_w_ads.indd 50 w i n t e r Melt chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pot of gently simmering water, stirring often until smooth. Stir in about one third of each of the almonds and candied ginger. Pour mixture onto parchment paperlined baking sheet and gently spread with the back of a spoon until about an even scant ½-inch (1 cm) thickness. Sprinkle with remaining almonds and candied ginger. Refrigerate until solid, about 20 minutes. Break or cut into pieces. The bark will keep refrigerated in an airtight container for about 1 week. For gift giving, package as desired. VARIATION: Pistachio Cranberry Apricot Swirl Bark – Melt separately 10 oz. (280 g) dark chocolate and 6 oz. (170 g) white chocolate. Stir one third of each: Ҁ cup roasted shelled pistachios, ѿ cup dried apricots, quartered and ѿ cup dried cranberries into the melted dark chocolate. Spread onto baking sheet. Drizzle with melted white chocolate. Use toothpick, skewer, or back of knife to swirl the chocolates together. Sprinkle with remaining pistachios, apricots and cranberries. Continue as recipe above.
