Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.” —GEORGE BERNARD SHAW, “MAN AND SUPERMAN” Dear Friends: Kenro Izu, the Japanese photographer who started the Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) and the 501(c)(3) organaization Friends Without A Border, is a perfect example of Shaw’s “Superman.” Eleven years ago, despite a lack of financial, political, or experiential capital to conceptualize, fund, or operate a world-class pediatric treatment and teaching hospital in the developing world, Kenro persisted – and succeeded in – adapting the world to his vision. I remember the first time I met Kenro. My firm was scouring the non-profit world in search of the highest quality hospital to support in Cambodia. Within minutes, Kenro had moved my colleagues and me to tears. He told us the story of what inspired him. After watching a 7-year old girl die as her powerless father looked on, Kenro thought to himself: “She is the same age as my daughter. How would I feel watching her die in front of my eyes when saving her life would cost only a few dollars?” Afterwards, Kenro decided to build a free hospital for the children of Cambodia, where every child would receive the attention, care, and love we all demand for our own children. It would be a place where a new generation of compassionate Cambodian doctors could be trained and a comprehensive, forward-looking approach to development could be implemented. After that first encounter, we realized we had found not only our hospital, but also someone with the right vision for bringing health, hope, and healing to a country still reeling from the aftermath of the brutal Pol Pot regime. As we approach the 11th anniversary of the Annual Friends of Friends Photography Auction, it is clear that Kenro and his incredible staff have delivered on this vision, and in spades: treating almost half million patients, training over 5,000 medical professionals, and providing capacity building, home care, clean water, cooking and nutrition classes, art therapy, and most importantly hope and love to all that pass through its doors. All this on a budget of less than two million dollars per year! What’s more, Cook + Fox, one of the world’s leading “green” architectural firms, is building a state-of-the-art, “clean tech” Visitors Center for AHC - laying the groundwork for a expansion program that will bring AHC’s quality care to all of Cambodia’s children with an eye to the imminent Green Revolution. Imagine AHCs and ideally hospitals across Cambodia - all solar, wind, and rain collection retrofitted - providing care to Cambodian children. By buying a photograph, you can help make this dream a reality. If you were to pass a child lying face down in a shallow pool of water, about to drown, you would walk over and turn the child over to save his life. All of us would. You might get your shoes a little dirty but it wouldn’t cost much more. Now put that child across the street. Still, you would cross the street to save a child. Now put that child across an ocean – in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Is that child any less worth saving? Distance does not diminish responsibility. Thanks to ‘Friends Without A Border,’ we all have a moral opportunity to be someone who saves a child – to be a Superman. Thank you for participating in this event to support the AHC. I’d like to extend a special thank you to the galleries, artists, and staff without whom this auction would not be possible. As the bidding starts, I ask all of you to get your shoes a little dirty and open your hearts and wallets to save a child’s life. Besides going home with a beautiful piece of art, you’ll also be building a brighter future for all Cambodians. Yours truly, Christopher Stamos Partner, Sterling Stamos Vice Chairman, Friends Without A Border ANGKOR HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN NEEDS YOUR HELP 2007 © Karl Globl © Daniel Rothenberg has been a very difficult year for Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC). Severely affected by the worst Dengue Fever epidemic in over two decades, the hospital, staff, and community are exhausted. More than one observer compared the situation to a war zone. AHC literally burst at the seams, with makeshift beds lining hallways and spare space. A city of mosquito-nets outside the hospital doors housed small patients too ill to be sent home but not ill enough to be admitted. Lacking even the time to keep proper charts, nurses wrote the vital signs of children directly on their bodies. Thousands of dengue fever cases were treated at AHC. Throughout Cambodia over 40,000 people were infected and hundreds of children died. We are not often forced to consider monsoon rains, tropical disease outbreaks or severe poverty. Cambodia’s misfortunes are quite literally half-a-world away. When Kenro Izu returned from his first trip to Cambodia nearly fifteen years ago, he brought both breathtaking photographs and a firm resolve to help the poor, ill and malnourished children he met there. His inspiration and the unrelenting support of thousands of individuals dissolved the distance between here and there. By linking our efforts in a worldwide community of friends, our actions can save children and impact a nation. Thanks to supporters of Friends Without A Border, nearly 100,000 children will receive crucial medical treatment at AHC this year. Without AHC what would happen to them? As participants in the 11th Annual Friends of Friends Photography Auction, a direct line now connects you to a Cambodian child in need. You have a remarkable opportunity to heal a child and heal a nation. Will you make the most of it? We sincerely thank all of the photographers, galleries and collectors from around the world who have donated their photographs. We also thank the generous sponsors who provide financial support for this event, the auction committee members who devote enormous time and energy to make the auction possible, and all of the attendees whose participation helps heal Cambodian children. One in seven Cambodian children dies © Daniel Rothenberg ■ before age five often from preventable, treatable, and curable conditions. ■ ■ AHC provides free, comprehensive pediatric medical care. Nearly 500,000 children have received treatment at AHC. AHC is an officially recognized teaching hospital training hundreds of Cambodian health workers each year, helping to rebuild Cambodia’s devastated health system. ■ AHC provides outreach services, specialized care for children with HIV/AIDS, and extensive health education to children and families. ■ Capacity Building and Health Education Program (CBHEP) works directly with communities teaching basic nutrition, agriculture, and illness prevention. CBHEP also helps provide clean water to rural communities through the Pure Water and Literacy for Cambodian Villages Project. ■ Dedicated to sustainable and environmentally-friendly development, AHC pursues green architecture and clean technologies wherever possible. AHC’s Visitors Center, scheduled to open in 2008, was designed through the generosity of Cook + Fox, one of the world’s leading green architectural firms. ■ AHC is planning a Satellite Program to bring the same comprehensive, quality, and loving pediatric care to government hospitals in rural areas. 01 Masao Yamamoto Nakazora #955 Gelatin silver print; Printed in 2006 3 3/16 x 4 13/16, Signed in pencil on the verso Edition no. 33/40 Guide Value: $1,000 Donated by the artist 02 01 Ron van Dongen Sprekelia Formosissima 2003 Toned gelatin silver print 19 1/8 x 15 1/8, Signed in pencil in the margin Edition no. 4/50 Guide Value: $1,200 Donated by the artist and Chris Pichler courtesy of Nazraeli Press 02 03 03 Mary Daniel Hobson #008 from the series Evocations 2007 Pigment print mounted on mat 8 x 8, Signed in pencil on the verso, certificate on the reverse of the mount Edition no. 3/10 Guide Value: $600 Donated by the artist courtesy of Modernbook Gallery 04 Linda McCartney Stallion and Standing Stone II 1996 Pigment print; Printed in 1999 11 x 16 1/8, Estate stamp on the verso Guide Value: $1,000 Donated by Debra Shriver Printed in Belgium by Salto. 05 Martin Munkacsi Having Fun at Breakfast c. 1933 Gelatin silver print; Printed later 11 13/16 x 9, Signed in pencil by Joan Munkacsi on the verso Artist Proof no. 3 Guide Value: $2,000 Donated by Joan Munkacsi courtesy of Howard Greenberg Gallery 04 05 06 Burt Glinn Fidel Castro, Santa Clara, Cuba 1959 Gelatin silver print; Printed later 12 15/16 x 8 13/16, Signed in pencil on the verso Guide Value: $2,200 Donated by Burt and Elena Glinn 06 07 Douglas Kirkland Audrey Hepburn, Paris 1965 Pigment Print; Printed in 2007 16x20, Signed in pencil in margin. Susan and I had decided to take Lucia to Goshen for a swim. We were on our way out when the phone rang. My mother and father were going for a swim and canoe ride at Hampton Ponds. Would we like to join them? I was ambivalent. I wanted to steal some time alone with my wife and daughter. But I knew this was a rare chance. My father hardly ever took time off to relax with the family, and he never went to Hampton Ponds, his childhood sanctuary, for anything but business. Dad approaches the water for a swim, he is shaky. He says the bottoms of his feet are tender, and it’s hard for him to walk on the rocky shore. I give him my flip flops and a hand, and he takes it which is unlike him. I try to help him into the water, but it’s not easy. He has trouble maintaining his balance. I want to be photographing him as he enters the lake, but that’s not possible. As we get waist deep, I let go. I pick up my hand camera and photograph him as he slips into the inky water.” —excerpt from Family Business, 2003 36 36 James Karales W.
