Morris
Arboretum
100 East Northwestern Avenue | Philadelphia, PA 19118
The Morris Arboretum began in 1887 as “Compton,” the summer home of Quaker brother and
sister, John and Lydia Morris. The Morrises shared a love of history, art, and travel – journeying
throughout the world to bring ideas, artwork, and plants back to Compton. They believed strongly in
education, stewardship, and preservation. It was their vision that Compton would one day become
a school devoted to horticulture and botany. In 1933, Compton became the Morris Arboretum of the
University of Pennsylvania. Today, the 92-acre Morris Arboretum is listed on The National Register of
Historic Places and is recognized as the official arboretum of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
As a world-class public garden and premier Philadelphia destination, the Morris Arboretum
promotes the relationship between people, plants, and place – bringing people together to learn,
grow, experience, and celebrate.
venue for weddings
Towering trees, lush gardens, and sweeping
vistas provide an unparalleled environment
for any special occasion. The Morris
Arboretum’s 92-acre property offers a wide
array of colorfully landscaped gardens,
original Victorian architecture, fountains,
and a spectacular collection of specimen
trees. A wedding at Morris Arboretum offers
a number of outdoor ceremony locations,
followed by a reception at the Widener
Visitor Center – a historic carriage house that
features a unique tented area.
Choose from three exquisite outdoor
locations for your ceremony. For an additional
cost, you may host your ceremony in one of
our specialty gardens, including the Rose
or Pennock or the dramatic Out on a Limb
canopy walk, 50 feet up in the treetops.
The Widener Visitor Center, a former carriage
house, serves as the base for your wedding
festivities and reception. In case of inclement
weather, the carriage house provides an
indoor alternative for your ceremony. An
outdoor tented area adjacent to the historic
Visitor Center can accommodate up to 175
guests for a sit-down reception. The Upper
Gallery of the building is suitable for hosting a
smaller reception of up to 65 guests.
For an outdoor reception with cocktails and
hors d’oeuvres following the ceremony, your
wedding party can experience a view from the
top of the hill overlooking the Wissahickon
Valley. Or for an additional cost, you can
enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres amidst the
treetops, on the Out on a Limb canopy walk.
meetings and special events
If you want to impress your guests with a
memorable gathering in one of the most
beautiful settings in Philadelphia, the Morris
Arboretum’s grounds and facilities will put
your event in a class of its own, away from the
rush of modern life.
Here you’ll find an enchanted ambiance with
original Victorian architecture and fountains,
colorfully landscaped gardens, and more than
12,000 labeled plants and trees among the
eclectic landscaped gardens.
