Eagle River, Wisconsin Hosts 53rd Annual
Rotary Club/NWADA Antiques Show
Article & photos by Brian Maloney
The Eagle River Derby Expo Center in Eagle River, Wisconsin once again hosted the Northwood’s longest running antiques event: the 53rd Annual Eagle River Rotary
Club/NWADA Antiques Show. It doesn’t pretend to be the biggest show around, but it’s
one of the best, with dozens of area dealers putting on a show that one shopper described Best of
as “the best little show in the Northwoods.” The local Rotary Club sponsors the always- the art glass at Time’s Treasures: this
popular event, with 100% of the proceeds helping to fund both local and international 8” Steuben acid-cut vase, circa 1920s

ROOM TRADING
Many people miss some of the most informative and possibly most interesting aspects of a marble show.
A few days prior to the actual show, marble collectors and presenters exhibit their marbles in their
rooms. Many marbles are bought, sold and traded. You can really get to know marbles and collectors
during this time. Rooms will be open most of Friday afternoon, evening and all day Saturday. Just walk
up and down the halls and visit any room that is open, if you really want to know marbles. Attend Early,
it is a good time to buy, sell, trade or just get to know the collectors.

The 53rd Annual Eagle River Antiques Show & Sale:
Wisconsin’s Original Northwoods Show
Article & Photos by Brian Maloney
The little town of Eagle River, Wisconsin has a population of only fifteen-hundred, but is known far and wide for some big-time events. The
World Championship Snowmobile Derby, for instance, is easily the
nation’s largest. Summer brings gigantic fishing tournaments, and soon
after that the popular Cranberry Fest. You may not know that Eagle River
is also host to the Northwood’s oldest antiques event - the Eagle River
Rotary Club/NWADA Antique Show. Now in its 53rd year, the event has
for generations been an integral part of this venerable vacationland’s
summer season.
Eagle River, one of Wisconsin’s premier vacation destinations, has been
a popular place for a long, long time. Located where the Chain O’ Lakes
meet the Wisconsin River, the Eagle River area is the site of northern
Wisconsin’s oldest known Native American settlement, dating back several thousand years. Today, the town is a year ’round tourist destination.
Many vacationers come for the some of the finest fishing and boating
to be found anywhere, but the big event of the year has to be the granddaddy of all snowmobile races: the Eagle River World Championship
Snowmobile Derby. This winter, it takes place on January 16th through
the 19th of 2014. Check out their website www.derbytrack.com for more
information. The 50-year-old race regularly brings in more than 30,000
race fans, swelling the town’s population to over 20 times its normal size!
A crowd was gathered at that very same Eagle River Derby Racetrack
this August 2nd & 3rd, for the track has also been the longtime home for
Eagle River Rotary Club/NWADA Antiques Show. The facility is a great
venue for the show. Located just north of Eagle River on Highway 45,
the site is hard-to-miss, with plenty of free parking.
The Northern Wisconsin Antique Dealers Association’s Joan Walters,
along with husband Jim, organizes the dealers for the event. The association’s members all live in the northern half of the Badger State.
Perennial Antiques is one of those NWADA members. They always
bring a wide array of period furnishings and more, often with a
Northwoods feel. This year, shoppers found some nice hickory furniture
there, plus an exceptionally ornate folk art wood & shingle birdhouse asking price $250. More rustic treasures awaited at J & L Antiques, who
specializes in American country painted furniture & primitives of all
sorts.
Things couldn’t have looked more different at the nearby Sandra AnnTiques. You’ll always find a good selection of original Maxfield Parrish
pieces there, plus gems like a Royal Worcester presentation demitasse
set. A just-acquired Pairpoint epergne took center-stage there this year
though, with a cherub and grapes motif and sporting twin Mt.
Washington glass bowls. There’s something here for most every taste,
from the vintage Bakelite jewelry at Time’s Treasures to some choice
Civil War-era firearms at Yankee Collector.
Unique finds like these have kept shoppers coming back to the Eagle
Rotary Club/NWADA Antique Show since 1961. Of course, there
are plenty of other reasons to visit beautiful Eagle River,
Wisconsin. It may be best known as “The Snowmobile
Capitol of the World,” but it’s a great place to visit any time
of the year. Eagle River offers some of the best fishing and
boating in the state, plus award winning lodging, dining, and
much more.
The Eagle River Rotary Club/NWADA Antiques Show is a great excuse
to make the short trip up to one of Wisconsin’s best getaway spots,
whether it’s just for the weekend, or for a full-blown family summer
vacation. You’ll find all the details at www.eagleriver.org. For more
information about the show, give show organizer Joan Walters a call at
920-533-8731. And as always, keep an eye out for listings of next year’s
Eagle River Rotary Club/NWADA Antiques Show in the Auction Action
Antique News!

Rich Penn Presents a Three Day Collector Feast!
Autumn is a favorite time of year for many. The Midwest countryside
starts to put on it’s crimson red & orange wardrobe and
kitchens begin to take on the aroma of the traditional
Thanksgiving feast for family & friends.
The Rich Penn Auction Event on Nov. 1, 2 & 3 will be a feast in it’s own right.
Several lifetimes of collecting will come to to the Iowa State Fairgrounds in
Des Moines, IA for a “Mammoth 3-Day Collector Feast.” Full of delicious
collector delights like the Billiard Collection of the late Steve Keesey of PA,
the Coca-Cola collection of the late Chuck Hardy, the Country Store collection of Alabama collectors Larry & Cathy Woodruff, the
Black Americana collection of Greg & Anne Rosenak,
the fabulous Petroliana collection of John Zimmer
and much, much more will all be offered. All without
reserve!
According to Penn, “This auction will be packed
from beginning to end with one of the most diversified
offerings we’ve ever had the privilege to sell. I have no doubt
that our collector friends will find this one of the most fun auctions we’ve ever held.” With over 2,000 lots, bidders will have
many exciting choices. Country store collectors will be offered
display cases and cabinets, signs, several seed counters, apothecary pieces, barbershop items, spool cabinets, coin-operated
machines and hundreds of soda signs.
It’s only appropriate at a Thanksgiving Feast that there are
offerings from Native Americans and something that’s quintessentially American. Collectors will find both. A very early Native American Zia
pot, c.1900, and a decorated bow with original sinew are offered. Several
Winchester Model 73 carbines will be included as well. And what’s a feast without
adequate “spirits?” The W. H. Holmes Rye Whiskey & Wines 5 gallon jug, from Jas’
Hamilton Pottery that’s decorated with a majestic eagle certainly makes a strong
statement at any festive table!
Beginning with Friday’s session, bidders will find a wide variety of classic restored
furniture and lighting. Two dental cabinets, even a salesman’s sample dental chair
and a fabulous oak hall tree with original brass hardware will highlight the session.
But lighting will provide the sparkle. Some are beautifully restored and converted for
electricity but for the purest & there are fixtures and lanterns in their original condition. Stacking bookcases are always popular and collectors
will have several choices. To round out furnishing the
house, there are bedroom & dining room pieces, chairs, love
seats, paintings and even record players.
The last Rich Penn Auction Event awoke a number of new billiard collectors and they’ve asked for more. The late Steve Keesey’s
collection will offer that opportunity. Keesey collected the more unusual.
From prints, rare ball racks and locking cue racks, to a one-of-a-kind beautiful
commemorative plate given by legendary billiard champion Alfredo de Oro to his
friend George Sonneborn, the Keesey collection has dozens of appealing small
items. But if you’re looking for big things, like a table, two of those will be offered
as well. Among the finest original condition Brunswick tables you’ll ever find, the
c.1910 “Alexandria” table doesn’t look like it was ever played on. Coming from a
mansion in Hanover, PA.....the table, in rare Circassian Walnut with Black Holly and
pearl inlay, has it’s original surface, original pockets, the original condition matching score keeper, ball rack and cue rack. All Brunswick-BalkeCollender-Co. Only the felt and cushions have been
replaced. The table and accompanying pieces all look
immaculate.
For those that like smaller table games, a number of
early examples will be offered with the variety of toys
in the auction. Parker Brothers “The New Bicycle” and
Milton Bradley’s “Merry Christmas” are included.
Black Americana collectors will have the opportunity
to bid on two early, c.1890’s Parker Brothers puzzles,
“The Darktown Fire Brigade” and “The Darktown
Fancy Ball.” Other great toys include tin wind-ups, tin
litho Country Store sets and litho on wood toys like the mint
“Paul's’ Soap Circus.” Cast iron fans will appreciate classics like
9
the “City of New York” side wheeler and the “Landing of
Columbus” bell toy.
Many of today’s collectors are in search of the more unusual advertising and
Country Store pieces. This auction will present a number of those kinds of items.
A salesman’s sample Dentist chair with carrying case is being sold. A rare
Canada Dry glass top soda cooler is offered as is a beautifully restored Orange
Crush iced soda cooler. Two die-cut metal Rx Drug Store signs with restored
neon will be available to brighten any advanced Drug Store collection.
Among the wide variety of Black Americana being offered are very early advertising pieces for Golliwogs, Gold Dust and Aunt Jemima. For primitive collectors there are even whirligigs. But for the Black Americana toy collector...there’s a huge variety. Some of the favorites are Amos & Andy character pieces, other windup toys like; “Dapper Dan Coon Jigger,”
“Charleston Trio,””Spic Coon Drummer” and the classic
“Fresh Air Taxicab” with “Amos” the wind-up driver.
Also offered are mechanical banks, games and novelty
pieces. This genre’ has become increasingly popular and collectors will have the opportunity to bid on many very rare items.
Chuck Hardy was well known among the Coca-Cola collector community, nationally and throughout Iowa. “Sharon and I met
Chuck and Ione many years ago....as we all tramped through an outdoor flea market in Southern, IA.” said Rich Penn. “Chuck had a
sixth sense for Coca-Cola red and he could spot it halfway across
the county. He was a gentleman and a good friend. The collecting community will miss him.” Hardy liked anything that was
Coca-Cola. His collection included very early pieces, like a pristine 1901 calendar, to the rare war year life size die cut stand-ups
and airplane festoons up to contemporary pieces. Collectors at every
level should be able to find something from his collection.
Soda fountain items are always well represented at a Rich Penn
Auction Event. This auction will be true to form. Well over a hundred soda signs will be offered. In addition there will be over 20 syrup dispensers
including the Ward’s Orange, Lemon and Lime Crushes. Ice cream collectors will
appreciate the opportunity to bid on cone dispensers, straw holders and a rare Heart
Shaped ice cream dipper.
Sunday’s session will include the first installment of the John Zimmer Petroliana
Collection. John has collected for 60 years and his collection is extensive.
Among the highlights are two restored Model T Fords, an
original condition 1941 Ford Deluxe Sedan Delivery and two
rare “Survivor” motorcycles; a 1917 Harley Davidson V-twin
and a 1913 Sears V-Twin. Gasoline signs, displays, pumps,
globes, new old stock parts and even a rare cast iron Case Eagle will
all be offered on Sunday.
Sunday’s session will also include a number of breweriana pieces.
Among them are early Anheuser Busch pieces; the Budweiser Girl in signed original frame and a very rare round Anheuser Busch reverse painted light-up sign.
While this piece is in need of restoration...it’s rarity should still generate strong interest. The more contemporary breweriana collector will be offered a variety of newer
neon signs, still in the box.
Penn concluded, “This auction will be three very full days. With over 2,000 lots,
our crowd will have great things coming at them from start to finish. This is definitely an auction you won’t want to miss. Come
early and be ready to be a part of the feast!”
As with all Rich Penn Auctions there will be three full
days of live bidding on site in addition to online bidding through Proxibid and LiveAuctioneers. Absentee
and phone bidding is always welcome. Auction
preview will be on Thursday Oct. 31 from 2:00
pm - 6:00 pm and from 8:00 am to auction start
each day. Full color catalogs will be available
for $40, including post auction prices realized.
