AND MRS. RECHNITZ Poseidon Early College High School is made possible through a generous one-million dollar donation by Dr. Robert and Mrs. Joan Rechnitz of Red Bank. This is the largest donation ever made to Brookdale Community College. The Rechnitz’s are the founders of Two Rivers Theater Company in Red Bank and they also served extensively in the education and public service arena. Mrs. Rechnitz is a graduate of Monmouth University and has served as a board member on several committees including “Friends of the Park” and the Women’s Council for the Leon Hess Cancer Center at Monmouth Medical Center. Dr. Rechnitz worked as an English and American Literature professor for over thirty years at Monmouth University. In addition to Poseidon’s donation, the Rechnitz’s contributions have funded many other local organizations including the creation of the Joan and Robert Rechnitz Hall at Monmouth Mrs. Joan and Dr. Robert Rechnitz University, which at Riverview Medical houses the university’s Center. STEPHENSON Dear Poseidon Families: Our school year kickedoff with a fantastic start! This year will be a busy year for our students. Not only will students be working diligently in the classroom, they are also dedicating themselves and exploring various avenues outside of the classroom. I encourage all parents to stay informed of the happenings at Poseidon and continue to support and cheer on your children! Our staff is dedicated in providing a first class education and I am always here to assist in anyway that I can! Our students, staff , and community are enthusiastic for the amazing things this year will bring! Special Agent Laura Robinson, FBI Evidence Response Team Senior Team Leader delivered a presentation on the various job opportunities within the FBI and her forensic work within the Bureau. The students began giving back to the community during technology workshops at the Neptune Senior Center. They delivered a workshop titled “Become a Savvy Smart Phone User” and worked one-on-one with members, assisting them in cell phone use. The students demonstrated how to create contact lists, text message, use email, and much more! Clean Ocean Action, Highlands, New Jersey, visited Poseidon and presented a workshop on ocean pollution. They also provided students with strategies for promoting a cleaner environment within our community. Here are some quick tips to staying on top : 1) Check the PowerSchool Parent Portal regularly to monitor your student’s progress in their high school courses. 2) Visit the Poseidon website weekly to see updates, announcements, and happenings. 3) Visit the Brookdale Community College website to read the course descriptions for classes for which your child is enrolled. Special events schedules can also be found here. 4) Have frequent conversations with your child about how he/she is doing in school. 5) Reach out to a Guidance Counselor, Site Administrator, and the teachers if you have any questions, concerns or need assistance in any way. T h e Po s e i d o n Ti m e s Page 3 CPR AND JANET’ S LAW “Janet’s Law”, in memory of Janet Zilinski, an 11year old who died of sudden cardiac arrest following a cheerleading squad practice is a new law that took effect on September 1, 2014 in New Jersey. Janet’s Law requires that all K-12 New Jersey schools have automated external defibrillators on site and an action plan in place in the event of a sudden cardiac emergency.
