Nearly two million people—more than one in five residents of New York City—live at or below the poverty level. For these children and adults, persistent rates of unemployment and limited job opportunities, increased budget pressures at the City and State levels, and an extreme shortage of affordable housing have left them at greater risk of destabilizing legal problems and more in need of legal representation. Against this background, every day, The Legal Aid Society provides a lifeline for basic survival for thousands of vulnerable New Yorkers, including vital programs to help children and their families address essential family needs. Your contribution during the Live Auction helps children and their families access essential, life-changing legal advocacy and overcome educational, social, and psychological issues. thE LEgAL AID SOCIEty’S CIVIL PRACtICE The Civil Practice assists low-income clients with civil legal matters that have an immediate and direct impact on their everyday lives. We enhance family and community stability by helping clients obtain and maintain the basic necessities of life such as housing, healthcare, food and subsistence income. Unfortunately, there is a much greater need for the services of our Civil Practice than can presently be fulfilled. For every client the Practice can help, there are a substantial number of low-income New Yorkers we must turn away due to lack of funding. Proceeds from this event support the Civil Practice.
