As a man from Guayaquil, born in this
land that I love immensely, I have the
honor to be its representative since the
year 2000. I have devoted my life and
my best efforts to turn Guayaquil into the
Large Cosmopolitan City that it is today; a
transformation process that has not been
slowed and has planted a feeling of pride
in the heart of the citizens of Guayaquil.

G
uayaquil is a hospitable, cheerful
city whose warm weather energizes
its active, hardworking citizens. To
complement their day of work, many
seek out peaceful rest areas for a change of
scenery, entertainment, and fun. For this
reason, throughout the city and its surrounding
areas, there are locations that offer different

types of fun and recreation. This has turned
Guayaquil, Port City of the Pacific, into the
ideal tourist spot for recreation.
Within the tourist entertainment industry,
Guayaquil has many locations for all likes and
ages. The range of possibilities is immense and
attractive. For instance, children can enjoy
playgrounds, waterparks with slides and water

healthy body. There are sporting venues where
different types of sports can be seen at both
an amateur and professional level.
The city also offers many green recreational
areas that allow contact with nature, such as
parks and piers that have a natural, traditional
and historical charm.
Guayaquil´s bohemian night life is one thing
tourists cannot miss. There are a number
of places that offer culture and evening
entertainment such as theaters, cinemas,
bars, night clubs, restaurants, art galleries,
and exhibition rooms among others.

economy, also has comfortable and well served
malls where the visitor can enjoy shopping,

as the traditional Forestal Park, the more
modern ones like Metropolitano and Lineal,
and aquatic parks like Puerto Lisa and El Fortin.
In addition visitors can enjoy shopping malls,
sports fields and theaters, each with their own
characteristics and identity.

History: Santa Ana Hill is the place
where Guayaquil was born. Back in the 16th
century, between the decades of 1540 and
1550, Diego de Urbina settled the city at the
foot of the then known hill, Cerrito Verde. It is
one of the most important tourist attractions
of the city, a place where history, tradition
and natural charm mix with fun and bohemian
events.
The stairs, made up of 444 steps, each one
numbered, bear the name of Diego Noboa y
Arteta, former president of Ecuador. Along the
way visitors can enjoy bars, restaurants, coffee
shops, art galleries, cyber cafes, artisan shops,
squares and more.
ATTRACTIONS: The hill is 60 meters
high and has one of the best lookouts of
Guayaquil. From the top, visitors can enjoy
spectacular 360 degree views of the city. To
the north, one can see the intersection of the
Babahoyo and Daule Rivers. These two rivers
form the Guayas River, a majestic body of water
with natural beauty and supreme importance
for tourism and the economy of the city. To
the south is the commercial center of the city.
To the east are the neighboring city of Duran
and Santay Island, a natural reserve essential
to the ecosystem. To the west are Carmen Hill
and the rest of the city. The lookout has special
binoculars for tourists to use.
Also located at the top of the hill is the
symbolic Lighthouse of Guayaquil where
visitors can encounter history and culture.
It was built in July 2001 and subsequently
inaugurated on 2002. This symbol evokes and
revives memories of the ancient lighthouse
that by 1841 was located on Santa Clara Island
and with its light illuminated the river, thereby
safeguarding the passage of ships. Next to the
lighthouse there are the Santa Ana Chapel and
El Fortin Naval Museum. The museum has on
display several nautical objects that recount
the naval history of Guayaquil.
Along the Diego Noboa y Arteta Stairs are
small squares, fountains and green areas
ideal for recreation and rest. Among them
is the small square Cerrito Verde, located at
step # 123. In this square is “Fuente del Cerro”
(Hill Fountain), whose design is of the colonial
period. The rest area, located at step # 163,
is complemented by the sculpture called “La
Cruz de Santiago” (The Cross of Santiago). This
sculpture is of great historical value because
it represents the city’s identity. This Gothic
style effigy, located within a fenced arena
and adorned with plants, depicts a sword
embedded in a stone. The cross simulates a
sword with its arms finished in flowers of lilies
and its heraldry on the handle.

History: The Simon Bolivar Pier history
goes way back, before 1820, when it was called
Orilla Street (Shore Street) because it bordered
the Guayas River. From 1999 it entered into the
city´s urban regeneration project carried out by
the Mayor of Guayaquil. Today it has become
one of the tourist icons of the city due to its
great attractiveness. Visitors can enjoy the
majesty of the river and time with the family.
Traditionally, it was the first image of the
city for travelers who arrived by boat because
the river was the main way of travel and
communication back then.
At first it was named “The Promenade of
Foreign Colonies” by a Municipal Ordinance
issued in 1931. Then, the name was changed
to Malecon Simon Bolivar in honor of the
liberator of five American nations.
Today it is known as Malecon 2000
(Boardwalk 2000) and is one of the most
successful urban projects of America. It is
considered a world-wide model, and was
declared as a “Public Healthy Space” by the
Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)
and the World Health Organization (WHO).
Attractions: This urban park, filled
with nature, history, tradition and modern
beauty is 2.5 kilometers (26 blocks) long.
Visitors can find gardens, artificial lagoons,
water fountains, lookouts, docks, squares
and historical monuments like the Rotunda
Hemicycle, Moorish Tower, Aurora Gloriosa
(Glorious Dawn) and the statue of Olmedo.
Also there are museums, movie theatres,
shopping centers, restaurants, bars, food
courts, playgrounds, a crafts market, and all of
the attractions, services and commodities that
a tourist would need to enjoy a tour through
the city. It also offers tours of the Guayas River
which offer another view of the city within
natural surroundings of great beauty.

Food courts
Services:
There are
two food courts, one located in
the south where the pier begins,
and the other in the north where
the pier ends.
The food courts are mixed
in with small stores, some
of which are located outside
giving the tourist a view
of the Guayas River and a
friendly natural setting. There

are also restaurants, coffee
shops, and ice cream stores
that complement the culinary
diversity.
At the food courts one can
find a wide variety of options
from fast food to national
and international cuisines,
and culinary specialties like
meats, sea food, and salads
among others.

T he
Artisan Market of the Simon
Bolivar Pier, located in the
Plaza de la Integracion
(Integration Square), along
the banks of the Guayas
River, was built by the
Municipality of Guayaquil as
part of its urban regeneration
program. In April 2002 it
was inaugurated during the
administration of Mayor
Jaime Nebot. One of his
objectives was to give the city
an orderly, secure place for the
trade and the manufacture
of crafts, thereby improving
the urban economy. This is
made possible through an
artisan market that attracts
a t t e nt io n a nd c re a t e s
employment.
Attractions:
It is located in a beautiful
natural setting near the Guayas
River and close to an area of
gardens, trees, and places of
rest and contemplation.
Its main attraction, on a
tourist level, is its 24 kiosks
that offer crafts at good prices.
Many of the crafts reflect the
national folklore. They are
hand crafted by Ecuadorian
artisans in materials such as
cloth, wood, leather, ceramic,
stone, tagua, glass, balsa
wood, toquilla straw, steel,
and copper among others.

clothing, shoes, purses,
hats, jewelry, sculptures,
paintings, ornaments,
souvenirs, postcards, musical
instruments, the famous
Panama Hats and much more.
Most of the products come
from cities located in the
highlands in the province of
Imbabura, where the main
economic activity depends on
its artisans. One of the cities
is Otavalo that specializes
in knitting. Another one is
Cotacachi where the artisans
make leather products. The
artisans of Antonio Ante
make clothing and those of
San Antonio work with wood.

Guayaquil Vision

elderly, the handicapped and children.
History: Guayaquil Vision is a private
company that since the year 2004 has supported
the development of tourism in the city. It offers
tours of the city on board of modern buses that
offer different services and commodities.
Attractions:
The Guayaquil Tour
Bus is another way to experience Guayaquil’s
charm. The tour is an hour and a half long on
board a two-story panoramic bus that can hold
up to 65 passengers. Significant tourist sites
are visited such as the Simon Bolivar Pier, Las
Peñas Neighborhood, and the Salado Estuary
Pier among others. A guide is on board to
relate pertinent details and the history of each
location visited.
The tour starts at the Plaza Olmedo (Olmedo
Square) Station, located at the Simon Bolivar
Pier. It crosses over the Santa Ana Hill Tunnel
and passes by the Atarazana suburb. From
there it follows Plaza Dañin Avenue and then
Tanca Marengo Avenue where it passes in front

of the Mall del Sol Shopping Center. From
there it follows Francisco de Orellana Avenue
until it reaches the Universidad Estatal
(State Unversity). From there it continues
along Carlos Julio Arosemena Avenue and
then 9 de Octubre Avenue up to Chile Street.
At Chile Street it continues along Olmedo
Avenue until Malecon Simon Bolivar Avenue
where it returns to the Pier.
During the ride tourists can enjoy a party-like
atmosphere because the bus is equipped with
music, television, and exclusive entertainment
programs according to their needs. The tour
includes drinks (soft and alcoholic) as well as
snacks. There is also the “Hora Loca” (Crazy
Hour), which features clowns and animations
among others.
As a special service, private tours can be
chartered to visit the city’s most important
tourist sites, with a prearranged schedule
and locations for departure and arrival as
established with the contractor.

History:
The Henry Morgan
Ship was named after the most famous
pirate of all times, who was a privateer,
ruler and Welsh sailor of the 17th century.
The schooner is a replica of a pirate ship,
built with Ecuadorian materials and
decorated with national crafts.
The Morgan is a project that belongs
to the Malecon 2000 Foundation, and
was built by the company Mar Petroleum.
The Mayor of Guayaquil, Jaime Nebot,
inaugurated the vessel on October 2,
2003. Its tours of the Guayas River give
passengers a different perspective of the
city. The motivation for its construction
and theme lies in the recreation of
history when the city was the target of
pirate attacks.
AttracTions:
A tour of the
Guayas River on board of a pirate ship in
which several renowned locations of our
city are visited, such as Santa Ana Port,
Las Peñas Neighborhood, Malecon 2000,
Santay Island, Caraguay Market (south of
the city), and others.
Under the pirate theme, the boat
has the capacity for 160 people and an
exclusive zone for 60 people. It offers
family tours and events like the popular
“Pirate Parties”, which last an hour and
include shows and free drinks.
Another characteristic is the ship’s
figurehead, a carved wooden decoration
found at the prow of the ship. It is a
carving of the native woman called Quil,
to whom many historians attribute part
of the name of our city.

Children playgrounds
and exercise areas

Characteristics:
This area is
dedicated to the entertainment and relaxation of
adults and children. It has games for children,
rest and exercise areas, bars and restaurants.
At the playground area, there is a group of
ludic circuits. It also has recreational areas
like the Plaza del Vagon (Wagon Square) and
rest areas sheltered by the shadow of trees that
were preserved from the old pier.
Also there are suspended bridges, a lookout
area, a carousel, slides, hammocks and a skating

lane that can be accessed independently from
the game area.
The fitness area has equipment for aerobic
exercises and other outdoor workouts. People
who like to jog or walk are seen visiting this
sector from early in the morning until the
evening.

Wagon Square
Address: Pier Simon Bolivar, near P. Icaza street.
History:
The Wagon Square and its surroundings are
the part of the City's urban regeneration project. This location was
inaugurated on July 25, 2000 during the administration of the
former Mayor Leon Febres Cordero.
Attractions:
A recreational and rest area that is
distinguished by its replica of a wagon of the National Railway
Company that was part of the first railway system of Ecuador. Now
this wagon has been refurnished as an exhibition site that can be
accessed through a platform with a pergola.
The square is completed with playgrounds for children and
a skating lane that can be accessed independently from the
children’s games.

Price: The prices vary from $ 0,25 to $ 1.
History:
The children’s park “Safari Park” is
a work of the Malecon 2000
Foundation, and it was inaugurated on March 20, 2014. It
possess an approximate area of
1,500 m2 and it has a modern
design of three giant umbrellas
that protect the park from the
sun and rain, the floor is of

artificial grass to offer security
and protection to the users
against falls and blows.
The games are for children
from 1 to 6 years and adults
must accompany children
under the age of 3.
Attractions:
The games are decorated with

animal themes, among those
stand out: the carousel, the
electric train, ten individual
games anchored to the ground
that work with coins known as
“kiddierids” like a helicopter
that goes up and down, a bike,
a fireman truck, among others,
which produce sounds of what
they represent.

Pier Gardens

Attractions:
The Pier Gardens is the most
beautiful and colorful area
of the Simon Bolivar Pier.
Its natural environment full
of flora and fauna captivate
tourists, who consider the area
as a place of peace and rest. It
also has an area with squares
and piazzas with several
attractions.
The gardens cover an area
of 22,000 square meters. It
has an array of more than
350 native species as well
as others that have been
introduced to the country.
There are four zones. The first

is for ornamental trees, the
second for trees of the rain
forests, the third for palm
trees, and the fourth for
conifers. In addition, it also
has an artificial estuary (near
Orellana Street) and a lagoon
(near Tomas Martinez Street
and Loja Street) where there
are ducks, geese and fish.
The area also has a group
of walking paths of 1.5
kilometers in length. They
are flanked by large trees
that offer refreshing shade. In
addition, the visitor can find
along the paths fountains,
bridges, ramps, quiet areas

Ecuadorian naturalist, Pedro
Franco Davila, famous in
Europe for being the founder
and director of the Royal
Cabinet of Natural History of
Madrid. Also there is the Hall

of Donors, which is the City’s
recognition of the voluntary
donations made by the citizens of Ecuador and Guayaquil
to help with the funding of
the construction of the
famous Malecon 2000. There
are 32 plaques of tempered
glass properly illuminated
with the inscription of 48,400
names of the donors. People
can find their names using
a computerized system that
locates the plaque and the
row in which the name of the
donor is located.

Cinema
Malecón
History:
Cinema Malecon is located
at the former IMAX movie theater, which was
inaugurated on March 2013. It offers two types
of format projections: Digital Advance 3D and
the IMAX (Image Maximum), with the format
of 15/70 mm.

Pier of the
Salado Estuary

History:
The pier has an area
of 400 square meters, and is located at the
banks of the Salado Estuary. It was built in
2009 as part of the City’s urban regeneration
project. The Municipality of Guayaquil carried
out this emblematic work and recovered and
rehabilitated this arm of the sea. In times past
it was a crowed beach resort and in later years
it remained abandoned. Today this park is the
pride and joy of the citizens of Guayaquil and
a great tourist attraction.
Attractions:
A natural
setting that is surrounded by the Salado
Estuary, mangroves, and an extensive area
of vegetation formed by trees, plants and
tropical gardens that combine nature,
entertainment and culture.

The area is distributed in two floors, both
with views of the estuary and the city. The top
floor has been designed as a deck resembling
a sailing boat that has a 55 meter long
suspension bridge.
Besides the garden, there are fountains,
rest areas, squares for outdoor artistic
performances, plaques like “Guayaquil Portico
de Oro” and three squares with monuments,
fountains and rest areas.
The first square is called “Paseo de los
Escritores” (Writers Walkway). It pays homage
to five famous writers of Guayaquil, with their
respective monuments. The second square is
“Plaza de la Salud” (Health Square). In this
square are two mirrors of water connected
by a pergola and cobblestone lanes. It has a
gathering area for 180 people where several

cultural events are carried out. In the center
there is the monument to journalist Ismael
Perez Pazmiño, founder of one the most
important newspapers of Guayaquil. Near the
statue there is a plaque from the Pan American
and World Health Organization recognizing
the effort of the Municipality to recover this
natural area.
The third square is “Plaza de los Mariscos”
(Seafood Square), a food court that offers
Ecuadorian seafood cuisine. And it also serves
as a location to carry out artistic events. The
site is adorned by a sculpture called “Pez en
el Agua” (Fish in the Water), which makes
reference to the maritime traditions of the
area. Also there is a stained glass window that
honors the Huancavilca aborigines, Guayas
and Quil, from whom, as some historians
believe, the city got its name. There is also
the so-called “Pier Vicente Rocafuerte” where
from its dock visitors can take boat rides
through the estuary.
From the park visitors can see the
Monumental Fountain of Dancing Waters
that produces jets of water with multicolor
lights. This is located in the water mirror of
the Salado Estuary between the Ferroviaria
Citadel Park and the 5 de Junio Bridge.

There is a parking lot for 45
vehicles, an exhibition area, several markets,
artisan kiosks, food court, restaurants, bars,
night clubs, fast food places, a dock for river
rides and rest areas.

Attractions:
The Square comprises the food court and a
recreation area in which several monuments that
depict the identity of Guayaquil can be appreciated
like the stained glass window of Guayas and Quil, the
Huancavilca aborigines that gave the name to the city.
There is also the sculpture “Fish in the Water” that
represents the maritime identity of the city.
In the food court, there are several outdoor restaurants where tourists can taste a variety of seafood
dishes such as ceviches made from fish, conch, shrimp,
octopus or squid. And there are seafood casseroles and
pastries made with plantain, different kinds of crabs,
‘encocados’ made of seafood and coconut, garlic marinated seafood, seafood salads, soups and rice dishes
with seafood. There are also drinks and cocktails.

HISTORY:
The pier
bears the name of banker,
businessman and politician,
Victor Emilio Estrada
Sciaccaluga who was the
son of former Ecuadorian
President, Emilio Antonio
Estrada Carmona. He was born
in Guayaquil on May 22, 1891
and died on February 21, 1954.
He was an entrepreneur with
transcendental ideas regarding
the financial management that
set the growth of banking of
his time.
In 2005, during the City’s
urban regeneration program,
the Guayaquil Siglo XXI
Foundation, the group in
charge of the work, decided
to include this pier along the
banks of the Salado Estuary,
located in “Urbanizacion del
Salado”, better known as
Urdesa.
The pier is a contemplative
area for walking, exercising or
just resting, and has a bicycle
lane alongside the estuary. It
is 190 meters long.
Attractions:
The remodeled Lineal Park is
located within the pier, which
also has four pergolas with
lookouts, cobbled walk ways
and tropical gardens.
In order to pay tribute to
its alumni, a monument was
built in the area near the
entrance of the University of
Guayaquil.

Thanks
to the urban regeneration
program, in the year 2006,
the Municipality, with the
GuayaquilSigloXXIFoundation,
began to remodel the Salvador
Allende University’s citadel to
benefit the students and to
contribute to the ecological
and recreational development
of the area. The work was
carried out by stages. The fifth
stage was finished in 2011.
Attraction:
In
an area of 800 meters long,
visitors can enjoy a walk,
do some exercise or rest
in pergolas surrounded by
mangroves and gardens. There
are also bikeways, a canoeing
dock, benches and rest areas.
The location has areas
designed to view nature in
an ambiance of peace and
tranquility that contrasts with
the active urban environment.
In this area there are several
walking lanes, observation
areas, decorated gardens
where paths of grey stone,
cobblestones, rails, metallic
posts, luminaires, benches,
trash cans and kiosks have
been placed.
TheUniversityWalkconnects
with the Lineal Park near the
Catholic University through
the modern Zigzag Bridge.
From this bridge tourists get

History:
The park bears the name of
Carlos Armando Romero Rodas, in honor of the
famous radio broadcaster. It is a work of the
Municipality of Guayaquil whose construction
began on January of 2004. It was completed
almost 10 months later, when it was inaugurated
on October 21 of that year.
The park is almost one kilometer long
(875.40 meters) with an area of 21,720.45
square meters. Throughout the park visitors
can appreciate the wide variety of flora and
fauna that borders the estuary.

The park has six entrances,
cobblestone pavement, small islands of
ornamental plants, and rest areas with 153
benches made of metal and wood. There are
four small trails that deviate from the main path
of 874.5 meters allowing visitors to enjoy the
natural surroundings, flora and fauna.
It has natural
features like mangroves, which are the habitat
of nine migratory species and the flora of the
coast where trees, gardens and plants of the
region stand out.
The tour includes gardens, ponds, artificial
lagoons, paths, docks, and a small square
that has a central agora with three stages
for artistic events. It also has monuments to
patriots like Emilio Estrada Carmona, president
of Ecuador from 1855 to 1911 and sculptures
of characters like Don Quixote, the Equilibrist
and the Venus of Valdivia. It also has figures
representing symbolic animals of the city like
the crab and other sculptures like “Amigas de
mi Jardin” (Friends of my Garden) which is
carved out of a 500 year old log.
There is also the canoeing school and the
piazza called Carlos Armando Romero Rodas,
which has a central agora with three areas for
artistic and cultural presentations for children.
During the night, the estuary looks like a
mirror that reflects the lights of the Catholic
University’s Lineal Park.

Ferroviaria Pier
Address: Malecon Eloy Alfaro avenue and 5 de Junio street, Ferroviaria citadel. Parish: Tarqui.
History:
The Ferroviaria Pier was
inaugurated on October 29, 2004. This work
belongs to the Malecon 2000 Foundation as part
of the urban regeneration program carried out by
the Municipality of Guayaquil.
Its construction has an extension of 290
linear meters. It began on July 2004 and
finished 87 days later. The urban regeneration
program also improved the surrounding
areas of the pier building green areas and a
platform that joins the northern gateway of
the El Velero Bridge through a series of ramps,
where a restaurant and a lookout point were
constructed.
Attractions:
The pier has
playgrounds, restaurants, gardens and a lookout
point located in the northern gateway of El
Velero Bridge.
From this pier visitors can view the majestic
spectacle of the Monumental Fountain of
Dancing Waters.

Barcelona Avenue
Lineal Park
History:
The Municipality of
Guayaquil inaugurated the Northern Linear
Park on July of 2011 as part of the city’s urban
regeneration project. The work was extended
with a new section of the park that reaches the
San Eduardo Navy Base and was inaugurated on
July 14, 2012.
Attractions:
It is a multipurpose
park. The area extends for more than four
kilometers (4,200 meters). It also has a water
park (towards Barcelona Avenue) that includes
two slides, water jets, typical playground
equipment, and two wooden playhouses. It also
has two indoor soccer fields, one basketball
court and one volleyball court. There is also a
workout area and a bikeway.

The Northern Linear Park is a favorite among
athletes and bicyclists because of its length,
areas equipped for fitness activities, and
natural surroundings.
The park contains mangrove preservation
areas where a variety of fauna and endemic
plant species of great ecological interest can
be seen. There are rest and contemplation
areas like gardens, benches and four metallic
pergolas. It also has a concrete dock with an
articulated ramp linked to a floating dock.
In the park there is also an area for art
and culture. Visitors can appreciate beautiful
sculptures throughout the park, which were
crafted by several artists. For instance there
is the sculpture, “Cabeza de Caballo” (Horse
Head) by an artist from Guayaquil, Yela Loffredo
de Klein. Also there are “El Bagre” (The Catfish)

“Guayaquil en la historia: Maria Eugenia Puig
Lince” (Guayaquil in History). It tells the story
of the city and the country through clay murals.

History:
The pier is a work of the
Guayaquil Siglo XXI Foundation and was
inaugurated on July of 2012. Its construction

Municipality of Guayaquil. During construction,
the surrounding areas of the pier were also
restored and improved.
Attractions:
The pier, located
on the banks of the Daule River, extends 340
meters. It has green areas with gardens, trees
and ornamental plants that beautify the area
and provide visitors with refreshing shade. The
site also has playgrounds, walking paths and two
basket courts, built in front of the river.
This charming pictures location includes the
renovated houses that face the river, painted
in vivid colors.

The location has gabion
walls, metal railing, restrooms, benches and
trash cans, and light posts.

Pier, inaugurated on August
27, 2012, is part of the urban
regeneration program carried
out by the Municipality of
Guayaquil. The work began
on May 30, 2011 to benefit
a population of more than
4,000 citizens. Before being a
recreation and entertainment
area, it was a ravine filled with
garbage and waste.
The work is made up of a
120 meters long concrete
platform that goes from
a dock, where the tourist
operator, La Fragata and
Delfines, is located, to a
wooden dock where the
agency, Los Delfines Ecoclub,
is located.

Forestal
Park
Address: Quito avenue and El Oro street. Parish: Ximena.

History:
During the
early years of 1950, where the
Forestal Park is currently located, south of the city, there
was a hippodrome that disappeared when another one was
built in the north of the city. Afterwards, this space was used
for soccer fields. With the construction of Quito Avenue near
Puerto Nuevo, the Forestal Park
was built in the location where
it is today. At the beginning it
had many plants, trees, and
a lagoon with an islet in the
middle that offered boat rides
to visitors. Around 1963, the

that time abandoned the park,
and soon it became a dumping
location.
In 1968, during the fifth
administration of the Ecuadorian president Jose Maria
Velasco Ibarra, a decision was
made to restore and redesign
the Forestal Park as well as
the construction of a theater
called Centro Civico (Civic
Center) that began on October 9, 1970. However, the
work progressed slowly. Years
later, towards the end of the
1970’s, the Municipal admin-
istration of Mayor Antonio
Hanna managed to obtain an
agreement with the Central
Bank of Guayaquil to fund
the reforestation of the green
areas, the rehabilitation of
the existing lagoon and the
construction of some squares
for art exhibits and cultural
activities.
Near the end of 1981,
thanks to the support of President Jaime Roldos Aguilera,
in the area near the corner of
Portete and Guaranda Streets
the construction of an Olympic pool began so that it could
serve as one of the venues for
the World Swimming Championship that was carried out in
state-of-the-art technology.

The Civic Center was

areas. The location has a natural charm for its 450 meters
long lagoon in which visitors
can take boat rides. It also has
green areas that include playgrounds, plants and a diversity
of flowers.
The location is made up
of 10 hectares. Nine belong
to the park and the other
corresponds to the Plaza de
Artes y Oficios (Arts and Crafts
Square). Here, several artistic
and cultural events are displayed.
The area designated as the
park focuses on the visitors’
entertainment and recreation. It has playgrounds,
rest areas, walking paths, a
small fishpond, a horse track,
a lookout point and two pools
with bleachers where swimming championships are carried out. Children and adults
can also enjoy the pool.
The Arts and Crafts Square
houses the Civic Center Theater in which several activities are carried out like
recitals, concerts, theater
plays, etc. The Experimental
Theater offers painting exhibitions, mainly on important
dates and holidays.
Inside this square, visitors
can also see the monument “La
Patria Joven” (Young Homeland) crafted by Ecuadorian
artist Oswaldo Guayasamin,
and is considered to be one of
the most important pieces of
modern art in Guayaquil. Also
there is the column that pays
homage to the Heroes of the
Independence of Guayaquil
and a sculpture of a mythological animal.

Metropolitan Park
History:
The Metropolitan
Park, located in the north of the city,
was built during the administration of
Mayor Jaime Nebot Saadi, as part of the
urban regeneration program. The park
was inaugurated on March 28, 2014.
It is located in the area called “Las
Iguanas”, a former landfill. It is 30
hectares and abundant with nature
since it is surrounded by a zone of
trees.
Attractions:
The park
has several green areas, trees, paved
and unpaved walking trails, bikeways,
skating lanes, and indoor soccer,
basketball and volleyball. There are
recreational areas with playgrounds
and water games for kids.
The park has a picnic area
surrounded by trees in which there
are 15 concrete tables with grills
included, several lookout points,
small squares and roundabouts. There
are also areas for horseback riding,
mountain biking, and walking trails
among others.
The park also has a second service
area whose entrance is located in front
Eco City, a residential development.
This part has an aquatic park for
children and tables with parasols.

area for outdoor grills, and also an
equine therapy center for children and
games for the elderly and disabled.

The Skate Park,
also called “Extreme Park”, was built by
the Municipality of Guayaquil during
the administration of Mayor Jaime

for the practitioners of this sport that
initially was born in the streets. Now
the young athletes can skate in a safe
place instead of in open areas.
The construction began on
November 26, 2006 and its

contact with nature, the Ecosports Park of Isla Trinitaria,
located in the south of the city,
is one of the largest recreation
centers of the area. The
Municipality of Guayaquil, as
part of the urban regeneration
process, built it in stages. Its
first phase was completed on
June 5, 2009.
Attractions:
The Park has seven
multipurpose courts with
bleachers, roofs and lights
for night games. It also has
a 600 meters long and 2.50
meters wide bikeway. There are
playgrounds, cobbled walking
paths, pergolas, rest areas,
green areas and a 140 meters
long water mirror.

or cherry tree. It also has 30
different species of plants: 17
trees, nine bushes and four
climbing plants.
Fauna: This zone is known
for being rich in its avifauna,
with more than 48 registered
species. Several species
of birds can be seen such
as mosquerito coronados,
pipilios, gulls, playero
colador, cachetigris perico,
mosqueros, semilleros, ducks
and stilts.
Cultural Activities:
The Park has several spacious
areas for artistic and cultural
activities, like exhibitions,
concerts, and a street theater

On July 29, 2011 the
Aquatic Park of the Barcelona Avenue was
inaugurated; located inside of the Lineal Park,
constitutes a large project within the city’s
urban regeneration program.
Attractions:
The fountain is
the biggest feature especially for children
during the warm season. Inside the Park there
are several playgrounds that shoot streams
of water.

meters long and is located in an area full of
wildlife. This offers visitors direct contact with
nature where they can enjoy the fresh air. The
location has been suitable for nautical sports
and even for family boat rides.
The aquatic area is another attraction of
this park, which is 1.500 square meters in size.
It has two slides, mushrooms and water jets.
Within its natural environment the park
has 5,000 meters for the preservation of
mangroves, 4,000 meters for recreational
areas, four kilometers of walking paths, 250
linear meters for bike paths, seven courts that
can be used for basketball and soccer, a pool
and playgrounds.

the aquatic park in La Isla Trinitaria which

that has several interconnected aquatic
activities such as the mushroom located
in the center, “squirts with water clouds”
located to the side, slides, barrels and
cascades.

The facilities have
cobbled walking paths, antiskid walkways,

and water jets. Besides,
playgrounds, there are a
lookout area to observe the
mangroves and a small beach

The beach resort, inaugurated on April
2014, is 23,985 square meters in size and
has a maximum depth of 1.2 meters. It also
has a lagoon with a children’s area that has
a depth of 30 centimeters and is feed by a
properly treated well.
The lagoon comprises an area of 8,343
square meters of which 6,000 are set aside for
tourist circulation. It also has 4,680 meters
of beaches and 6,045 meters of green areas.
Attractions:
This is the first
popular, artificial beach resort of the city, and
the only one in the country. It has a lagoon, an
artificial beach with an area of one hectare for
swimmers, designated areas for children, an
antiskid film that looks like sand and an island
were swimmers can tan.
The lagoon has designated recreational and
resting areas with 52 concrete beach chairs,
four pergolas and a gymnasium.

The artificial beach resort,
La Playita del Guasmo, is located in the south
of the city and was built by the Municipality
of Guayaquil as part of its urban regeneration
program. The construction lasted five months.
It began on February 2004 and was officially
inaugurated in July.
It is located along the Cobina Estuary and
comprises an area of 4,000 square meters
of beaches and 3,500 square meters of pier.
To enter the water, bathers have to descend
down four steps.
The place has become a recreation site, not
just for the citizens of nearby cooperatives,
but for everyone who desires to have a good
time and relax. It is estimated that during the
weekends over 1,500 people use the place.
This number increases drastically during the
holidays.
Attractions:
Developed in an
area of 7,500 square meters, the beach has
a layer of fine sand 50 centimeters thick. It
also has a dock for low draft vessels, pergolas,
bleachers, agoras and green areas.
The area allows artisan fishing, boating
activities, and swimming. Another activity
for bathers is floating on rafts or inner tubes
that are for rent at a modest price.

It has fifteen food
establishments that sell a variety of traditional
dishes, bathrooms, dressing areas, lookout
areas and an infirmary.

Playa Varadero
used to be a place located by the sea
with 24 huts where the locals offered,
in an informal way, prepared food. In
2010, the area was renovated through
Guayaquil’s urban regeneration
program. Thus it was turned into a
comfortable, attractive and functional
place to serve tourists.
Attractions: Thetourist
project, Playa Varadero, is a great
attraction since it allows the visitor to
enjoy the splendor of a 2.5 kilometers
long beach and a favorable climate. It
also has comfortable facilities like a
food court near the sea in the shape of
a shell and made of muyuyo (a wood of
the area). In this food court visitors can
enjoy seafood delicacies of the coast.
When the tide is low, natural pools
are formed that can be enjoyed by the
little ones. On one side of the beach
there is a cliff, and in the lower part
of the hill there is a wide area where
beach soccer tournaments can be
organized.
Services:
There is a large
market in which 24 restaurants can
be found. Of those, 21 offer seafood.
Two are cocktail bars, and one is an ice
cream store. It also has three access
ramps to the beach, four life guard
stations, a service for renting parasols,
playgrounds, lockers, a parking lot for
cars and buses, an area for reserve,
bathrooms, showers, pergolas and ten
hammock cabanas.

droughts and warm weather, is
known for its flora in which visitors
can find species like algarrobo,
cullulle, muyuyo, aromo, cascol,
ciruela, junquillo, ceibo, pitajaya,
and balsa among others.
There are a variety of birds like,
gulls, herons, pelicans, albatross
and mockingbirds.
Attractions:
It has
2.5 kilometers of beautiful beaches
where tourists can bathe in the
sea. It is a peaceful location, ideal
for rest.
During certain times of the year,
a large variety of sea animals reach
its coasts, such as sea wolfs, bluefooted boobies, and great variety
of whales.
Among the places to visit,
in addition to the beach, is the
parish church which is located at
the town’s entrance. It is a tourist
attraction due to its octagonal
architecture, uniquely designed
with a star-shaped cover.
Just behind the church there is
a path that descends to the beach
that tourists often visit to watch
the sunset and see the passage of
ships that arrive and leave the port
of Guayaquil.

The Monumental
Fountain of Dancing Waters is a
complementary work of the Salado
Estuary Pier. It is part of the urban
regeneration project carried out by the
Municipality of Guayaquil during the
administration of Mayor Jaime Nebot.
The work was built by the Spanish firm
Ghesa Ingenieria y Tecnologia, and it was
inaugurated on October 30, 2011.
The water dances to the rhythm of
the music which offers a beautiful,
spectacular show.
Attractions:
One of the
main features is the continued elevated
movement of water in the middle of a set
of colorful lights that display hundreds
allegorical shapes providing a great visual
effect to the viewer in which the sound of
music is also a part of the show.
This fountain has a geyser that can
spray jets of water up to a height of 40
meters. Also there are 64 lower pumps
that can raise streams of water to form
a 20 meters high screen on which, like
a movie screen, videos and other images
can be projected. At night, it is a display
of color full of music and images. The jets
of water can been seen with blue, violet,
red, yellow and many other colors,
dancing to the rhythm of the music, from
semi-classic pieces to the traditional
ones from Guayaquil like “Guayaquil de
mis amores” and “Guayaquileño madera
de guerrero” synchronized with images
of the city.

performs virtual animated images, in which jets
of water are made in a combination of sequences
accompanied by multicolor lights. The water
pressure is distributed in different types of
spouts, like the so-called crystal jumpers and
the cosmic nebulization effects.

The fountain is
known for its brightness and its intermittent
movements. Bears its name for its participative
and interactive features which allow visitors to
get in and feel a part of it.
The fountain is located in the north of the
city and it has an interactive visible dome,
screens of vertical jets of water on which
videos and still images are projected over
the water. There is an interactive tunnel and
a pedestrian walk with water elements on

The fountain is divided
into four sections that
have large jets of water
and multicolor lights.
The first is a cybernetic,
participative and
interactive type. The
visitors can dive into it
and become a part of the
fountain through a tunnel

from the inside. There,
visitors can also appreciate
the white lights and view
close up their intermittent
movements.
Next is the second section of the fountain,
which is formed by the pedestrian walkway
with jets of water jumping from one side to
the other. This allows that those that walk
through it to have fun and enjoy the beauty
of its style.
To one side is the third section which is a
circular shaped fountain that squirts jets of
water synchronized to music. They create
ascending and descending figures that
transport the visitor while contemplating
the lights and colors.
Finally, the fourth section is a fountain
that produces multicolored jets of water
that sprout from the ground in perpendicular
movements.

Capwell Stadium belongs
to the sport club, Emelec,
which was born thanks to the
initiative of North American,
George Lewis Capwell, who
founded the institution on
April 29, 1928 at the Electric
Company of Ecuador, of which
he was the superintendent.
The history of the stadium
goes back to September 8,
1942 when the Municipality
of Guayaquil decided to
donate several blocks for
its construction. Later, on
October 15th of the same
year, the National Congress
of Ecuador approved a
decree that authorized the
Municipality of Guayaquil
to donate the lots and
have control over them.
The first stone was placed
on July 24, 1943 and its
official inauguration took
place two years later on
December 2, 1945.
At first, the stadium
was a baseball field where
s e v e ra l ma t c he s w e re
carried out until 1947 when
the South American Soccer
Championship was carried
out in Guayaquil. The
stadium became exclusively
a soccer field.
As the years passed,
the stadium underwent
several renovations and
inaugurations. The first one
was on May 26, 1991, and
others followed in 1999,
2006. And another one is
scheduled for 2015.
Currently the stadium bears

Monumental stadium belongs
to the Barcelona Sporting
Club, an institution founded
on May 1, 1925 under the
sponsorship of Spanish and
Ecuadorian businessmen. It was
inaugurated on May 26, 1988.
Later between the years 1992
and 1994, it was remodeled to
increase its capacity.
The stadium is considered
one of the best in South
America and it was built
thanks to the initiative of
businessman and sports
manager, Isidro Romero Carbo,
so that Barcelona could have
its own stadium. Currently
the sports venue bears the
commercial name of Banco del
Pichincha (Pichincha Bank).

for 75,000 spectators in its

Jose de la Cuadra, named to honor
the famous writer of Guayaquil, was

carried out the architectonical aspects.
The theater, first of its kind in

T he
Theater is located in the
south of the city, inside the
Forestal Park. Its construction
was planned in 1969 by the
Ecuadorian president at that
time, Jose Maria Velasco
Ibarra, to commemorate
the sesquicentennial of
Guayaquil’s independence.
However, for different reasons,
mainly financial, the work was
paralyzed for more than 15
years until its construction was
finished in 1985.
For a while, the building
belonged to the Central Bank,
but the current owners are the
Municipality of Guayaquil and
the Ministry of Culture.
Among the activities that
are carried out inside the Civic
Center Theater are plays, civic
events, contests, exhibitions,
and concerts among others.
Description:
The Theater is built above a
square area of 6,400 square
meters, and is located in the
middle of an artistic complex
that also comprises the Civic
Square and an agora surrounded by a series of flags.
It also has the largest auditorium in the city with a ca-
pacity for 1,927 spectators.
It was built with four levels.
The theater has two floors
with 20,000 square meters of
construction. The building is
covered by a geodesic dome,
which is its main characteristic. Inside this infrastructure
is the main auditorium, with
a capacity of 1,927 and two
small theaters with a capacity
of 150 people each.
An agora was built on
the outside area of the Civic
Center, like the ones located
in public squares of ancient
Greek cities, and has a
capacity for 300 people.

The Sarao Cultural Center was
created on December of 1988 by the actor and

The Theater was inaugurated
on January 16, 1988 under the sponsorship of
the Sociedad Femenina de Cultura (Women’s
Cultural Society). This organization has more
than 45 years of existence and was formed by
ten women who favor the arts; their leader was
Inge Brückmann.
Description:
The Theater has an
outstanding infrastructure built in an area of
9,000 square meters. Events are carried out in
the main building that has five stories and 3,000
square meters of construction. The main theater
has 869 armchairs in the lower level and 291 in
the upper level.
The building is designed to attend to the
needs of the handicapped. It has a parking lot
for 450 vehicles and a permanent surveillance
service. It also has five ticket booths located
in the lobby and one on the outside.
Its stage has an elevator for the orchestra
and a technical control booth handled by
trained personal that provide set up, lighting,
sound and stage props.
The theater also has an experimental theater
that is located to the side and is completely
independent of the main stage. This area has
technical features similar to the main theater
and has a space for 250 armchairs.
Additionally, the building has a multipurpose
room that is used for conferences, workshops,
and receptions among other activities.

Theater

History:
The Sanchez Aguilar Theater
belongs to a foundation with the same name and
it was inaugurated on May 17, 2014. This theater
was built to contribute to the city’s cultural
growth and as a response to the expansion of
the highway to Samborondon.
The theater is under the administration of
the Sanchez Aguilar Foundation, established
in 1989 with the slogan “To educate is to
liberate” and its purpose is to contribute
to education. Among other activities, the
Foundation grants scholarships to students
with limited resources.

The Theater was
built in an area of 24,000 square meters and
the building comprises 6,100 square meters of
construction. The main room has 952 armchairs
and the experimental room, called Zaruma, has
space for 150 people.
The theater also has an area for art exhibits,
photographs and audiovisual presentations. It
also has state-of-the-art acoustic technology
with scenic illumination, theatrical equipment
and sound system.
The theatre also has a coffee shop and a wine
bar that operate independently.

A brief history of Guayaquil
D
uring the 1540’s Diego de Urbina
organized the first settlement at
the foot of Cerrito Verde (Green Hill)
which later became known as Santa
Ana Hill. This settlement developed into a
beautiful city along the banks of the Guayas
River in the ancient Huancavilca Territory.
Thanks to the skillful hands of carpenters, the
wooden architecture of the city grew. Out of
precious, durable woods they built balconies
and portals that were unique to America.
Its location between the hills of Santa Ana
and Carmen offered a commanding view of
the river where sailboats carried out their
port activities. This early commercial activity
became the engine of the regional economy
during both colonial and republican times.
Its sheltered port, located in one of the most
peaceful estuaries of the west coast of the
South Pacific, turned into the largest shipyard
of the South Sea that Spain had.
Guayaquil was a cradle of liberty, which
was achieved during the Glorious Dawn of
October 9, 1820, when for the first time, in
the existing Ecuadorian territory, the explicit
and formal Declaration of Independence took
place. The armies that liberated Quito on May
24, 1822 departed from Guayaquil. From the
same city, a large contingent sealed the liberty
of South America during the battles of Junin
and Ayacucho.

on July 26, 1822.
During republican times, the dynamic river
port connected the region and the country
with international trade, creating thousands
of job opportunities and progress for all
Ecuadorians. From the port, cocoa (the golden
bean) and banana were exported to the ports of
Europe and North America. Also, technological
advances arrived to the country through the
port modernizing the life of the inhabitants.
Towards 1960, Guayaquil became a seaport

Geographic Location: The geography of Guayaquil
is characterized by its coastal location along the
northwestern part of South America near the Equator. It has few elevations since it is far away from the
Andes Mountains. Its higher elevations are made
up of small hills that cross the city and later join
the mountain range called “Chongon-Colonche”,
which is located to the west. There is a network
of rivers formed by the Guayas to the east and the
Salado Estuary to the west giving it easy access to
the Pacific Ocean through the Gulf of Guayaquil.

Safety: When visiting Guayaquil, tourists should

else. Do not leave your belongings unattended
and avoid deserted places at night. The National
Police and the Metropolitan Police guard the city’s

Visas and customs: A visa is not required for most
foreigners to enter the country for a stay of 90
days or less. However, citizens of Afghanistan,

parishes, including the respective maps;
to promote them with our brand
“Guayaquil is my destination”, which has
represented a gigantic work that have
had the support of the Tourism team,
and the Director of Communication and
Urbanism and the Vistazo Group; from
historian Parsival Castro and Engineer
Aldo Mora who designed the maps. My
special gratitude to Carlos Julio Gonzalez
and Priscilla Parker who enriched these
guides with their wonderful pictures; also
to Lourdes Taznic and Ana Lema for the
work carried out on the Cocoa Route.
