2 0 1 0 ANNUAL REPORT M I S S I O N S T A T E M E N T The primary mission of the Count Basie Theatre is to serve the people of the state of New Jersey by providing a broad spectrum of quality entertainment and education programs that reflect and celebrate the diversity of the region; foster understanding and appreciation for the ennobling power of the performing arts; and create opportunity for cultural enrichment for people at all economic levels. It also is our mission to develop and maintain a world-class venue that enhances the enjoyment of these entertainment and education programs; contributes to the cultural and economic vitality of the community and the region; and honors the memory of Count Basie. 1 M E S S A G E F David J. Dear Friends, Donors, Members and Community Members, We are pleased to report that 2009-2010 was another award winning industry, the Basie nevertheless had its second highest attendance in the last year for the Count Basie Theatre. Hosted by Adrienne Bailon of The Cheetah Girls, the show featured Twitch of “So You Think You Can Dance” and a special performance by hip hop star Pitbull. SEPTEMBER 1, 2009 The Count Basie Theatre Foundation hosted a benefit concert with Counting Crows. Proceeds from the concert of over $225,000 benefit the theatre’s restoration fund. SEPTEMBER 26, 2009 - Bike for the Basie, an annual charity bike ride through Sandy Hook to benefit the theatre’s annual operating fund raised over $14,000 in net receipts from friends and supporters of the theatre. The Count Basie Theatre’s fiscal year ends on June 30, and the annual audit commences one month later, after the June bank statements have been reconciled. The audit takes about two months to complete, and is formally presented to the Board of Trustees by the Audit Committee at the September board meeting. Preparation, production and distribution of the Annual Report follows immediately, and takes one more month to complete. OCTOBER 16, 2009 - The Jersey Shore Rock-N-Soul Revue premiered its latest show, “One Hit Wonders,” before going on temporary hiatus while music director Bob Bandiera tours with Bon Jovi. NOVEMBER 1, 2009 - The Count Basie Theatre was the location for an evening with TV star Stephen Colbert to benefit the Two River Theater Company, also based in Red Bank. The Basie’s seating capacity enabled the company to raise significantly more income in just one night than it could in its own intimate venue. NOVEMBER 8, 2009 The Count Basie Theatre celebrated Veteran’s Day and the theatre’s 83rd birthday with a free concert by the West Point Jazz Knights. DECEMBER 11, 2009 - Co-produced by Jazz Arts Project and the Count Basie Theatre, the 4th Annual Sinatra Birthday Bash combed the state for the best saloon singers to pay tribute to one of NJ’s most famous sons. DECEMBER 18, 2009 - On this date the Count Basie Theatre was entered into the National Register of Historic Places. The register is the nation’s official list of cultural resources significant in American history, architecture, archeology, engineering or culture. The theatre had previously been entered into the NJ Register on May 5, 2009. DECEMBER 31, 2009 - For the 11th time, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes rang in the New Year at the Count Basie Theatre. The show was broadcast live on Sirius Satellite Radio. Pulling the winning ticket at intermission on New Years Eve are Theatre CEO Numa Saisselin, Mark Pender of the Jukes, and Rachel Warnick of the Count Basie Theatre Foundation. This year’s winner: Marc Muller. He won two tickets to every show at the theatre this year. JUNE 11, 2010 - The Count Basie Theatre Foundation and Joan Dancy & PALS (People with ALS) Foundation were the beneficiaries of a concert by the Max Weinberg Big Band on the opening night of their debut tour. Over $200,000 was raised for the two organizations. JUNE 24, 2010 - Comedian and actor Joe Piscopo, and Broadway performer Michael Longoria of the original cast of “Jersey Boys,” used the Count Basie Theatre to shoot the promotional video for their new show, “That’s Life.” JUNE 26, 2010 - The 9th annual Fab Faux benefit concert cleared $150,000 in support for the theatre’s annual operations.
