3G World Congress 2006
Program Highlights
How to best use your time at the Congress
In order to help you make the most of your available time during your
stay in Hong Kong, we are providing a simple way to select what you
want to attend. Just have a look at the four and a half days of conference
activities, see when they are held, and you can easily chose which
topics are the most interesting ones for you. As you can see, a lot of
topics are conducted in parallel which makes it even more important
to chose carefully. Nevertheless, everyone can attend quite a number
of sessions and seminars while staying in one place - there are only
short distances between the different conference rooms.

Understanding CDMA2000 1xEV-DO and its
Evolution
Packet data has been an important part of CDMA2000 since it was first
released. Since then, 1xEV-DO has increased capacity and performance,
and EV-DO Revision A has added many enhancements to support newly
emerging applications. EV-DO was designed explicitly for easy
deployment on top of existing CDMA2000 networks, with minimal changes
to the core network.
With the introduction of EV-DO Rev. A, several additional options are
available for a user to mix voice and data traffic. EV-DO continues to
evolve and Rev. B enhancements will be described, followed by a
discussion of where Rev. C is headed.

Seminar 14:
Mobile Devices Driving the Future of
Convergence - Understanding the New
Technologies and Application Opportunities
It is becoming increasingly clear that the convergence of future wireless services
will not involve a single global network standard. Instead, flexible user devices
accessing a continuously evolving patchwork of wireless networks optimized
for specific applications will drive convergence. These networks include various
flavors of 2.5G, 3G; WiFi, WiMAX, 802.20 as well as audio and video broadcast
networks. All of these technologies will combine to deliver a wide range of
applications and features - and ultimately create the "convergent lifestyle" of
the future. Mobile phones will evolve from communication tools to integrated
communication devices, media terminals, credit cards and remote controls.
This seminar will provide the technical fundamentals and business insights
required for understanding the converged mobile phone market and related
products from standards to applications. An analysis of the marketplace,
standards and product development lifecycle will illustrate the competitive
landscape and opportunities ahead.
1. Understanding the impact of emerging wireless standards and future
directions
• IEEE, 3GPP / 3GPP2 wireless evolution
• Future broadband wireless access technologies
• High throughput wireless LANs
• Next generation WPANs
• Emergence of NFC and RFID
• Standards consensus and market interaction
• Implications of product development roadmaps and strategies
2. Key factors driving convergence in the mobile market
• Evolution of wireless handsets
• Handset features, services and technologies
• Market size and trends
• Industry partnerships and value chain
• Evolution to seamless mobility
• Convergence and coexistence
3. Emerging applications and opportunities ahead
• Future vision - always connected to information, entertainment and
services anytime and anywhere
• Expanding the role of mobile phones beyond voice, data and
content - including mobile wallet, payments and transactions,
ticketing and information exchange
• Case studies and scenarios

Seminar 10: (Full day - Thursday afternoon & Friday morning)
WiMAX / WiBro fundamentals - Technology
and deployment
This seminar explores the technology options for WiMAX / WiBro
implementation and its role in providing fixed and mobile wireless
broadband services. Given the wide choice of technologies being
considered, it is vital to understand the environment in which these services
operate in order to make informed decisions when planning the technology
and services.
The agenda is practical in nature, focusing on the technologies and
techniques used to implement WiMAX / WiBro. It is therefore of key
relevance to CTOs, Senior Engineers and Technical Executives wishing
to understand the technology and practical issues of network
implementation and deployment.
1. WiMAX / WiBro fundamentals
Role of WiMAX & WiBro - relationship of WiMAX to Wi-Fi, 802.16x (the Wireless
Metropolitan Area Network specification) and other broadband options
Key WiMAX / WiBro parameters -frequency positioning, FD/TD duplex,
data rates, coding schemes (OFDM), adaptive modulation, power
budgets, costs
2. WiMAX / WiBro performance
The underlying OFDM - What is it? Why is it the key to consistent
performance for high data rate mobile networks? How is it achieved?
Why do I need to understand it?
Smart antenna technology - optimizing spectral and spatial efficiency
3. Device and technology options
Overview of architecture options at the receiver / transmitter level
Technology choices - analogue / digital partitioning, levels of integration,
IC options, DSP to software ratios, the role of Micro-Electro-Mechanical
Systems (MEMS) & nanotechnology components, participating vendors
Integration of WiMAX in cellular and cellular-enabled devices (phones,
PDAs, laptops)
4. Deployment, planning and the future
Initial frequencies, initial services, initial locations and initial players
Radio planning issues - range considerations, optimizing the practical
benefits of OFDM, ensuring a consistent experience for the user, an
evaluation of performance in the urban environment
WiMAX as a fourth generation (4G) broadband mobile network
