From The Director`s Chair - Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care
From the Director’s Chair:
Happy 30th Birthday to Us!
We are excited to be celebrating our
30th year of service to this community.
Who could have imagined in 1982 that
Caldwell County Hospice would grow
into today’s Caldwell Hospice and
Palliative Care?
From a Sunday school classroom at
First Presbyterian Church, staffed
mostly by volunteers, we have grown
to more than 100 staff members
serving more than 300 patients
wherever they call “home,” including two inpatient facilities in Lenoir and Hudson. Our purpose remains to
provide compassionate, respectful, quality end-of-life
care for patients, their families, and their caregivers. We
have developed programs and services to meet the
needs of patients with chronic conditions, of families
grieving the loss of loved ones, of school children and
staff facing the loss of a classmate, of businesses coping
with employees’ losses, and so on.
the future. As the healthcare needs in our
community change, we
are prepared to meet
those needs: Our cardiac
care and pulmonary care
programs help patients
and their caregivers
manage these conditions
and improve quality of
life; we have initiated a program to address the needs of
patients with advanced dementia. We will continue to
listen, learn, grow, and respond to the needs of our
community.
Thank you for all the kind words and support you’ve
given over the decades. You know we can’t do it without
you! We look forward to our next 30 years of excellence.
—Cathy Swanson
Our Board of Directors, over the years, has recognized
the changing healthcare needs of our community and has
encouraged our efforts to meet those needs.
Our staff, each day, in every situation, asks: “What is
best for the patient?” Our interdisciplinary team—
physicians, nurses, medical social workers, counselors,
certified nursing assistants, chaplains, and volunteers—
is focused on responding to the needs of each patient
and family.
Our community values and appreciates hospice and
palliative care services. Physicians, other healthcare
providers, and our colleagues in long-term-care facilities,
work with us to provide a range of services and continuity of care. Additionally, because businesses, churches,
foundations, and individuals are so generous with their
support, no patient has been nor ever will be denied
services because of inability to pay.
As we look back on our first 30 years, we also look to
Cathy Swanson celebrates with Joella Shore, recipient
of the 2004 Sharon O. Dixon award from The Carolinas
Center for Hospice and End-of-Life Care. Cathy credits
Joella, now retired from nursing, with teaching her “the
hospice way.”

Fundraising for Caldwell Hospice:
Dry Ponds Baptist Church BBQ
grown so popular and large that it was moved to Dry
Ponds Baptist Church, which has hosted it ever since.
Katheryn and Archie Seagle have made a true family
operation of the annual barbecue. In-laws, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews have all contributed to the
dinner’s success during the past 20 years. Everyone
has a job: taking money, preparing to-go orders,
standing in the “assembly line” to fill plates with
barbecue, slaw, cowboy beans, pickles, and rolls.
As Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care
celebrates 30 years of service in 2012, one thing
is abundantly clear: The organization enjoys
strong support from people throughout the
county and surrounding area.
That has never been more evident than during
the recent 20th annual Dry Ponds Baptist Church
barbecue fundraiser for Caldwell Hospice.
“Churches in our community have been strong
friends and supporters of Caldwell Hospice since
our beginning in 1982,” Executive Director Cathy
Swanson says. “Dry Ponds Baptist Church is a
clear example of the loyal partnerships we are
fortunate to have with churches and other
organizations.”
What started as a cook-out
at their house to thank
Caldwell Hospice in 1992
has grown into a major
event for both Dry Ponds
Baptist and Caldwell
Hospice. Following the death
of her father that June,
Katheryn Seagle (pictured
at left) and her husband
Archie wanted to thank
Caldwell Hospice, their
family, and their friends for the care and support
shown to them during her father’s final months
of life.
The Seagles—longtime members of
Dry Ponds Baptist
Church in Granite
Falls—planned a
barbecue at their
house as the way
to say “thank you.”
By the third year,
the event had
Page 10
“This is something that we feel is important to do,”
Katheryn says. “The people at Caldwell Hospice were
so good to my father and family during his illness that
we wanted to have a special thank-you for them.”
“So many people in
the church have been
cared for by Caldwell
Hospice,” Archie adds
(pictured at right, he
began cooking the
barbecue at 3 o’clock
in the morning). “Each
year’s barbecue is in
memory of everybody
who received hospice
care.”
Many people who attend the annual fundraiser have
hospice stories, and when you ask why they support
Caldwell Hospice, you hear their experiences. One
woman says she isn’t ready to talk—it’s still too soon
after her loss—but she praises the care her loved one
received. People talk about the loving care, the availability, the attention to the whole family. Some people
list many family members who were cared for by
Caldwell Hospice. Everyone who shares a story says
the experience was meaningful and healing.
Between 2001 and 2012, the Seagles, their church
family, and all the people who attend the annual
fundraiser have contributed more than $50,000 to
Caldwell Hospice.
“We are so grateful for the Seagles’ and Dry Ponds’
continuing support,” Swanson
says. “The money they raise
every year through this
barbecue helps make it possible
for us to provide services to
everyone who needs them,
regardless of ability to pay.”

Telling Our Stories:
Watch Us on Caldwell County Today
Caldwell Hospice enjoys a monthly taping schedule with Caldwell County Government’s public access program,
Caldwell County Today. Public Information Officer LouAnne Kincaid hosts the interview program, and Charlie
Little videotapes and edits the interviews for viewing on Charter Cables Channel 10.
Recently, LouAnne and Charlie carried their equipment to the Robbins Center in Hudson to learn from Medical
Director Dr. Thomas Ray and Palliative Care Nurse Sonya Triplett about Caldwell Hospice’s palliative care
program.
When the public information team
visits Kirkwood in July, Executive
Director Cathy Swanson and
Board President Parker Williamson
reminisce about CHPC’s first 30
years of providing end-of-life care
and education to Caldwell and the
surrounding counties.
We receive good comments about
our CCT interviews from people in
the community. Thank you for
watching!

Board Spotlight on Parker Williamson:
After 30 Years, Parker Remains Passionate
From the moment of its birth in a Lenoir physician’s
living room, when Dr. Jane Carswell and nurse “Tyu Tyu”
Respess shared their dream of better end-of-life care,
Caldwell Hospice has expressed this community’s
genuine concern for its people. The seeds of that idea
found fertile soil among Caldwell County leaders, and
soon our tiny hospice announced its service to the
community.
In the early days, we were a 90% volunteer movement:
volunteer nurses Bobbie Triplett, Joyce White, and Tyu
Tyu, led by part-time nurse Gibbie Harris, working in a
borrowed Sunday school room at First Presbyterian
Church, and supported by scores of community volunteers. Cash gifts paid the telephone bill and part-time
staff salary; gifts of wheel chairs and bed pans sustained
us, and churches put us into their budgets.
We needed the medical community’s support, but doctors
were taught that death is the enemy and didn’t understand a “good death.”
Respected cardiologist
Dr. Robert Belk articulated the hospice
approach in medical
staff meetings to
doctors who referred
their patients to us,
once they saw the
positive impact on
patients and their
families.
As the hospice idea spread, insurance companies began
to take notice. I read a study that compared the cost of
traditional care and hospice care for a patient’s last six
months of life. The hospice savings were phenomenal,
and I encouraged several local employers to have their
insurance carriers include a hospice benefit for their
employees. Once Medicare covered hospice services, our
hospice’s financial stability was ensured.
Julia Forlines, a strong community leader, chose to speak
for us to community groups—even as her thyroid cancer
had metastasized to bone and lungs, so that one of her
lungs had been removed and she was on oxygen. Sitting
in a wheel chair and speaking softly into a microphone,
she explained what it felt like to be terminally ill, how
family and friends could help, what hospice could do.
Movers and shakers in our community were won over.
Margaret Harper believed in hospice care, also. She gave
her beautiful home, Kirkwood, to First Presbyterian
Church, with the request that the church make it available to Caldwell Hospice. The church signed a 99-year
lease with us at the cost of a dollar per year.
The Lenoir Service League sponsored a “Home for
Hospice” campaign, raising more than $150,000 to
renovate Kirkwood and add a six-bed inpatient care
facility. Through additional support from foundations, we
gained matching grants totaling nearly $600,000.
We needed a license from the State of North Carolina to
build and operate an inpatient facility, but the State
recognized only hospitals, mental health facilities, and
nursing homes. John A. Forlines, Jr., Julia’s husband, was
president of the North Carolina Bankers’ Association and
a board member for the American Bankers’ Association.
“You organize the preachers,” he said to me, “and I’ll get
the bankers.” Not only did we get a law passed naming
hospice care, but as the first free-standing inpatient
facility in NC, we helped write the regulations that would
ultimately govern us!
John joined our board and served many years as its
treasurer. When times were tight, he encouraged his
bank to float us a loan. In years of plenty, he was a
formidable investor. Largely by John’s efforts and those
of his fellow Bank of Granite employees, the ACC
Basketball Benefit Luncheon attracted hundreds of
Caldwell County residents to hear notable ACC coaches.
John was also the inspiration for our Caldwell Hospice
Foundation which he believed
would ensure the sustainability of hospice for many
years to come. Finally, during
our $9 million campaign to
build a second hospice
inpatient facility, John—at that
time a hospice patient—made
a major gift to guarantee its
success.
Caldwell Hospice has been blessed with a volunteer
board of risk-takers who believe in what our hospice can
do, work to make the dream come true, and follow our
commitment, as expressed in our Mission Statement, to
share the love of Jesus Christ. Considering that history,
just think what the next 30 years will bring!
