Tirana, June 19-21 www.isciweb.org www.isciweb.org Well-being - Rates of mortality - Malnutrition Objective Subjective - Perceptions - Evaluations - Aspirations Children’s SWB • The field has rapidly developed • Traditionally been studied on the basis of objective facts • Well becoming vs. well-being • Adult’s evaluations vs. Children’s • Shortage of cross-national comparative research Children’s Worlds • World-wide research survey on children’s subjective well-being • Aim to improve children's well-being by creating awareness among children, their parents and their communities, but also among opinion leaders, decision makers, professionals and the general public • By collecting solid and representative data on children’s lives and daily activities, their time use, and in particular on their own perception of their well-being History Summer and autumn of 2010 Proposing a questionnaire that could be used in a variety of countries (industrialized or developing). Preliminary questionnaire was piloted, in Brazil, England, Germany, Honduras, Israel and Spain First pilot Planning 2009 December 2010 Findings were presented and discussed. questionnaire was revised and developed Questionnaire and data will be freely available 2011-2012 Fall-Winter 2013 Questionnaires were tested among 3 age groups: 8, 10, & 12 in fourteen countries Representative samples of 15 countries/regions Early 2013 Questionnaire was revised and finalized Summer of 2013 The global database was created Full Survey Extended pilot History Supported by the Jacobs Foundation The first wave • The data is from surveys of children aged 8, 10 and 12 in fourteen countries. • For 8 year olds we have over 8,400 responses from 8 countries • For 10 year olds we have over 9,000 responses from 11 countries • For 12 year olds we have over 16,900 responses from 11 countries • Data has been checked and cleaned and cases with high levels of missing data and response patterns have been removed • For the analysis the data for each country has been weighted equally by gender Extended Wave – Participants Country 1. A total of 45,000 children • Representative sample of a country or region • Deep translation (language and cultural) and profound testing of the questionnaires (focus groups and depth interviews) • A combined large international database • The ability to explore a broad picture of findings that compare the SWB of children from varied countries around the globe • Advanced analysis. e.g.: validating tools and new indicators, similarities and differences in the children's lives Want to join?
