Working in Equine Therapy Funded by Wounded in Bosnia Wounded in Bosnia. Funded by WWTW through the Poppy Factory. Working as an Operations Manager. Hugh Forsyth 3 News Crystal Ball Gala Dinner On 30th May our Crystal Ball gala dinner was held at the Grosvenor House Hotel. The evening was hosted by Ben Fogle and guests enjoyed dancing the night away thanks to performances by Ellie Goulding and The Stereophonics who were simply brilliant. Among the distinguished guests were David Hempleman Adams, Matthew Pinsent, Team Glenfiddich (the British participants in this year’s South Pole Allied Challenge) together with the expedition’s Royal Patron, Prince Harry. In addition to some amazing raffle prizes such as sports memorabilia and Royal Ballet backstage passes, guests also took part in both a ‘Silent’ and ‘Live’ auction which featured some wonderful lots, all generously donated by supporters. Winning bidders won seven nights in Bali, an all expenses trip to Aspen which included flights, ski passes, ski wear and ski lessons, and a flight in a rare Gypsy Moth Bi-plane. The Live Auction was held by one of Christie’s Head Auctioneers, James BruceGardyne. During the cocktail reception guests were dazzled by the talented magician and Army veteran Shane Sterling Price. Bartenders at the Glenfiddich whisky bar were extremely generous and a fantastic evening was had by all. The event raised in excess of £120,000 and was a golden opportunity for the WWTW staff to exchange their wet weather clothing from the Cumbrian Challenge, for a bit of black tie and sparkle. Gregory’s Trailer Based in the South West and with over 450 trucks and 1200 employees, Gregory Distribution is one of the UK’s leading distribution and logistics businesses, and they have pledged their support by dedicating one of their vehicles to promote and raise awareness nationwide of the work the charity undertakes. The 44 ft Gregory Distribution refrigerated trailer has been especially liveried to draw attention to the extraordinary achievements of wounded servicemen and women and features Daniel Majid, a former soldier injured by an IED whilst on foot patrol in Afghanistan. Walking With The Wounded funded Dan’s retraining as a geography teacher and he will begin teaching at his local High School at the start of the forthcoming Autumn term. This truly is a remarkable opportunity for the charity and we are extremely grateful to all at Gregory Distribution for their unique support. South Pole Launch On 19th April, South Pole Allied Challenge Patron Prince Harry officially announced the teams taking part and, as a member of the UK team, threw down the challenge to the US and Commonwealth teams. Held at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, the event was broadcast by the world’s press, and streamed live. Capt Ivan Castro, from Team US, joined all the members of Team Glenfiddich on stage with Prince Harry, as the countdown began for what is Waking With The Wounded’s biggest and most exciting expedition to date. The teams are leaving for Antarctica in November and you can follow their progress via our website www.walkingwiththewounded.org.uk. News Duncan Slater Abseils into Conference The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) building in London’s Regents Park provided a unique backdrop as the venue for the ‘Pushing Boundaries Rehabilitation Conference’ recently. The 140 delegates looked up aghast, as they witnessed double leg amputee and South Pole UK Team Glenfiddich member, Duncan Slater, abseil into the conference from the rooftop of the design award winning building! The conference, jointly organised by Exchange Chambers, NewLaw Solicitors and South Pole sponsors Pace Rehabilitation, provided the audience of barristers, solicitors, case managers, claims handlers and prosthetic users with the opportunity to learn (and see demonstrated) some of very latest clinical services and prosthetic advances. With his prosthetic feet safely back on the ground, Duncan joined his Walking With The Wounded counterparts, Ed Parker and Guy Disney, to provide an inspiring presentation about the charity’s successful 2011 North Pole expedition and their forthcoming South Pole Allied Challenge. Recovery Careers Service Deutsche Bank Walking With The Wounded was honoured to speak at the London launch of the ‘Veterans Network Group’ at Deutsche Bank in April this year under the title of “Overcoming Adversity”. The Deutsche Bank Veterans Employee Network Group was created to raise awareness of the unique and complex issues facing veterans transitioning from active service to civilian employment. Charity Co-Founder Ed Parker, Head of Fundraising Andrew Cook and Guy Disney & Duncan Slater from the South Pole UK Team Glenfiddich member gave an insight into the charity from both a charity fundraising and expedition perspective. The team was then given a tour of the bank including some of the trading floors, which brought back some happy memories for Ed and his time in The City! The way in which our Wounded, Injured and Sick (WIS) are supported is constantly evolving as we seek to provide the best and most meaningful assistance for them. January 2013 saw a huge stride forward in how our wounded are supported with their career transition with the launch of the Recovery Careers Service (RCS). The RCS is an employment service focussing on full-time employment, apprenticeships and internships and is a needs based service; with higher levels of support given to those facing the largest barriers to future civilian employment. Support is delivered in line with candidates’ Individual Recovery Plan (IRP) which incorporates all aspects of their recovery pathway and career transition. The RCS is focused on delivering a personal and inspirational career service which empowers WIS service personnel to achieve a sustainable and fulfilling career. WWTW is very proud to be one of the founding stakeholders and funding partners in the RCS. If you are an employer and can help our wounded by offering internships, jobs or work experience, please email fergus@wwtw.org.uk Case Studies Simon Taylor First Steps Bursary Scheme Sports Rehabilitation Degree at Sussex University Simon Taylor joined the army at 16 and served with the Light Dragoons for over a decade. In September 2009, he was in a vehicle when it hit an IED. The explosion killed the driver next to him and Simon was severely injured on the left side of his body, suffering a collapsed lung, spinal injuries and a shattered left ankle. He was in a coma for a month and then wheelchair bound with a spinal brace. Despite many operations to save his ankle, the pain was such that Simon eventually decided to undergo elective amputation below the knee in 2011. Simon had lost count of the number of surgeries he had undergone – the latest being a spinal fusion at Christmas – and felt his life had come to a halt and that he was falling apart. He’d always worked well under pressure but the slightest thing could send him over the edge and he was suffering from nightmares, though he never really remembered them, only the loud noises which would wake him. He didn’t know what to do with his life, although he knew he wanted to do something that made a difference to others. During his rehabilitation he became fascinated by the physical side of rehabilitation, so much so that the staff asked him if he’d considered studying physiotherapy himself. He was invited by an instructor to go along to some classes to see what he thought and he was hooked! Simon has now been accepted to a Sports Rehabilitation Degree Course at Sussex University starting in September 2013 and is currently completing his Sports Massage Level 4. Due to a shoulder operation scheduled during exam time, Simon recently had to take his practical exam two months early and passed with flying colours. Simon has been awarded a Walking With The Wounded First Steps Bursary to assist with his education over the next 3 years. “Having a disability like mine is really a state of mind and if you want to push past it you can, if you have the will to, you can achieve anything – I am lucky though, I have my wife and she’s been my rock.” Hugh Forsyth The Poppy Factory Facilitator of Equine Assisted Learning Hugh Forsyth joined the army straight out of school and served in the Royal Engineers for 12 years. During deployments to Northern Ireland and Bosnia he worked on high risk bomb disposal teams locating Improvised Explosive Devices and suffers from PTSD as a result of his service. He also sustained a spinal injury which makes physical elements of a job difficult and painful. Hugh was discharged from the Army in 1997 and retrained for a civilian career. However, he lost his job in 2004 as a result of numerous hospital appointments and aggressive behaviour attributed to his PTSD. Living in constant pain, scared, depressed and virtually housebound, Hugh felt lost and didn’t know where to turn. Then, in January of 2012, Hugh was contacted by the charity Dare to Live which uses horses to facilitate what Hugh describes as the ‘rebooting of his brain/ body systems’ allowing him to process traumas and finally come to terms with his experiences and injuries. Recognising abilities in Hugh that he himself didn’t see, Dare to Live offered Hugh the challenge of learning more about Horse Whispering and Natural Horsemanship and asked him to consider filling the position of the Operations Manager for the Dare to Live program. The Poppy Factory, funded by Walking With The Wounded, stepped in and offered to help Hugh’s transition back into the workplace by retraining as a Facilitator of Equine Assisted Learning – a program which is completed over three years to degree level. Hugh is continuing his Natural Horsemanship training and recently started the facilitators course in June. “I’d never been near a horse in my life and I had certainly never contemplated anything like asking for financial help before but I’m glad Walking With The Wounded was there to help. I start my new job in March 2014 and this is all down to the horses at Dare to Live and the help from The Poppy Factory and Walking With The Wounded.” Anam Ahmed Skillforce Administration Assistant / Fundraising Assistant Anam Ahmed joined the Army in 2006 and was a Combat HR Specialist in 26 Engineer Regiment until his military career was cut short following injuries sustained in a training exercise in 2011. Anam sustained a significant head injury which caused 100% loss of sight, a lower back injury which still causes him constant pain and was diagnosed with Somatic Disorder. Following his medical discharge Anam had lost all confidence and thought that his life was over until Blind Veterans UK introduced him to JAWS, a screen reading software for the visually impaired. Anam decided to take matters into his own hands and searched for organisations offering support to wounded veterans and registered himself on-line with The Poppy Factory which is funded in part by Walking With The Wounded. The Poppy Factory recognised Anam’s need to work from home and his excellent computer skills so put him in touch with Skillforce who had potential job opportunities suitable for home based workers. Anam completed the application and assessment process in June 2012 scoring exceptional marks. Anam is now a Skillforce Administration Assistant processing Military 2 Mentors applications and dealing with enquiries as well as being an integral member of the Fundraising Department. He has, in the last few years, regained 20% of his sight and his back is improving slowly. “Just because I’ve lost my sight doesn’t mean I’m totally wasted. When I was injured I was frustrated and quite angry, I had no confidence and thought I’d never work again. Since then with the support I have received I’ve regained about 70% of the freedom I lost when I was injured. If you have the drive to do something there is support out there to help you move on and rebuild your life.” First Steps First Steps is a bursary scheme designed by Walking With The Wounded (WWTW) to provide access to formal education or vocational training. We aim to support our wounded helping them to identify their new career path and then gain the qualifications necessary for them to make a successful move from military to civilian life. Individuals can apply directly for grants to help fund courses as well as cover additional costs such as accommodation, books and equipment. The Bursary is open to service leavers and veterans disadvantaged by mental or physical injury as a result of either conflict or training. This includes providing support to homeless veterans and veterans in the Criminal Justice System. The long-term positive outcomes delivered by the scheme include: •Increasing employability of wounded servicemen and women leaving the military •Inspiring and motivating wounded personnel to become self-reliant •Providing a smoother transition from military to civilian life •Empowering individuals to pro-actively seek out a positive and secure future •Creating long-term security for the individual and his or her family WWTW also works alongside and supports several other programmes which retrain and empower servicemen and women. We distribute funds to these groups, so that they can continue their valuable work in supporting our wounded to find jobs and secure their futures SkillForce The Military to Mentors course, run by Skillforce, trains service leavers to become mentors in the Skillforce school programme. WWTW joint fund this program with the Royal British Legion. The Warrior Programme The Warrior Programme is a 3-day course aimed at providing those with cognitive injuries the tools to address the challenges of getting into the work place. The Poppy Factory The WWTW Back to Work Programme, powered by the Poppy Factory, is a bespoke recruitment service designed to get our wounded back into work. Adventure Quest AQV is a specialist course aimed at veterans with cognitive difficulties. By using the Mountain Leaders course, with a built in career advisory and vocational awareness module, the course aims to support those struggling to find work, back into jobs. RBLI (LifeWorks Course) RBLI’s LifeWorks programme is an innovative work-focused assessment and employability course that also provides follow-up information, advice and guidance and ongoing supportto set our wounded on the right track in the world of civilian work. The Tough The Helly Hansen Cumbrian Challenge 18th May 2013 On 18th May Walking With The Wounded launched its inaugural public event, the Cumbrian Challenge, with a memorable weekend amidst the stunning scenery of the Lake District in the beautiful village of Patterdale. Everyone had a cracking time, despite the day-long downpour, and wound down in the evening with a slap up barbecue and entertainment by The Inhalers. Enormous thanks goes to Helly Hansen for their ongoing support – and for manufacturing what proved to be the only truly waterproof clothing in Ullswater! Congratulations to the winners of the Tougher route: James Hoad, Edward Watkins, Barnaby Grant and Matthew Houghton-Barcoe, a team of Cambridge University Officer Training Corps Cadets, who completed the 33k hike over 10 peaks taking in Striding Edge, Hevellyn and Red Screes in an impressive 5 hours and 43 minutes; and to Girls On Top: Katie Williams, Milla Beeston, Monty Stanton and Carlyn Kilpatrick, who completed the Tough route – a 20k hike over 5 peaks – in under 4 hours. In total over £240,000 was raised by the 100 Cumbrian Challenge teams and their incredibly generous supporters. A very special thank you goes to Team Tough – Etta Lloyd-Jones, Annie Donald, Annie Hewitsen and Julia Squier – and their indefatigable team mate, Fiona Unwin, who raised over £7,000; and to LDC, which fielded 13 teams and collectively raised over £40,000. Fundraising - Community Baking for ‘Our Wounded’ The Hazlegrove School Bake Sale In November last year the kind and generous staff, plus a few helpful parents and friends of the Hazlegrove School in Wincanton raised £365 for WWTW by selling cakes, muffins and brownies to the staff at break time. The delicious treats went for £1 each and were so popular the cooks had to return to the kitchen to bake some more! Climbing for ‘Our Wounded’ Hand Bikes at Dawn On 20th April 2013 Graham O’Hanlon and wife Jacky along with their support crews set out to scale Cadair Idris, one of the tallest mountains in Snowdonia, using specially designed mountain bikes. The bikes, which are pedaled by hand, have very low gears so the riders can climb the steep and rocky mountain slopes. The punishing ascent to the summit took over 6 hours and raised just over £1,000 for the charity. Their achievement is an example of the spirit and determination of our supporters and highlights the ability regardless of injury to inspire others. Fencing for ‘Our Wounded’ 24 Hour Fence-athon On 30th March, 2013 students at the University of Surrey hosted a 24 hour fencing marathon and raised £6,200 for WWTW. Fencers from six universities including Brunel, Reading and Royal Holloway, joined The University of Surrey students at the fundraising event. Bruce Dickinson, front man for Iron Maiden, even turned up to demonstrate his fencing skills. Fencing’s long and illustrious history has always been tied to the military, especially in Britain where fencing tradition is rooted in the armed and naval forces. “We really like the cause and believe in the good work that Walking With The Wounded is doing for our wounded servicemen and women. Everyone has great respect for them and the sacrifices they have made for our country, and we felt that it was time to give back to them.” - Andy Reynolds, Event Organiser. Canoeing for ‘Our Wounded’ Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race On 31st March, 2013 James Casey and Jamie Supple completed the 125 mile Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race in 27 hours 3 minutes and 8 seconds and raised £3,448 for WWTW. The race, which has been held annually over the Easter Weekend since 1948, starts its first 52 miles along the Kennet and Avon Canal from Devizes to Reading, the next 55 miles are on the River Thames to Teddington and the final 17 miles traverses the tidal portion of the Thames to Westminster. Photograph by kind permission of Tony Smith. Hiking for ‘Our Wounded’ North Norfolk Coastal Path Hike Over the May Bank Holiday two energetic pupils from Diss High School, 14 year old Kaylee Andrews and Ruby Mouser, hiked 46.6 miles along the North Norfolk Coastal Path and raised over £1,200 for WWTW. South Pole Allied Challenge Team Glenfiddich member, Duncan Slater, who used to be stationed with Kaylee’s father in the RAF, joined the girls for the last 10 miles of their walk from Hunstanton to Cromer. They were greeted at Cromer pier by a cheering crowd of mums, dads and grandparents. Congratulations to you both on an amazing achievement! ALT1-C/CR London Shooting Challenge The 2013 London Shooting Championships were held this year at Well Barn Estate in Oxfordshire. The event comprised of 30 teams of 4 guns shooting 5 drives across the estate, providing a variety of “game birds” all simulated through the use of clay pigeons, with each team shooting at 1,000 clays in the day. Following the shooting, a fine champagne reception awaited the teams followed by a 3 course lunch which included an auction and prize giving. There were some great lots up for auction including tickets to Twickenham and pegs at some very prestigious shoots across the UK. With special thanks to Dylan Williams of the Royal Berkshire Shooting School who ran the shooting program and to Patrick Kennedy at Majordomo who is the figure head of the event and without whose efforts we would not have raised in excess of £9,000 for the charity. Mia Fowler letter The team at WWTW was extremely touched by the heart-warming letter from 8-year old Mia Fowler who made her own poppies and sold them to support veterans young and old. She raised £20 for WWTW. This is a copy of the lovely letter Mia wrote to us, and everyone here at HQ would like to acknowledge how impressed we were with her creativeness. Thank you, Mia!
