A Message from the Chairman
Dear Friends:
Thank you for joining us this evening as we honor Dr. Lee Katz, a longtime board member and supporter of the
Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center with our Spirit of Humanity Award. Lee has demonstrated how to
“Be the Difference” for her entire life with her commitment to education, including posts with Purchase College and
American Associates of Ben-Gurion University. We are proud to have her as a Vice Chair for the HHREC while she
also devotes time to the board of the Rye Arts Center, among other causes.
You are all going to witness a memorable moment tonight as award-winning actress Tovah Feldshuh, who just portrayed
a rescuer in Broadway’s Irena’s Vow, will present real-life rescuer Dr. Tina Strobos with our Courage to Care Award. As
you will hear, Tina was a young medical student when the Nazis invaded Holland. She joined the resistance and along
with her grandmother and mother sheltered more than 100 Jews during the war.
As students and teachers learn about history-makers such as Tina and others in the HHREC’s programs, students and
teachers come to understand their own abilities to make a difference. These educational programs are becoming more
important as time passes and prominent figures on the world stage actually continue to deny the Holocaust. It is gifts
such as yours that help combat the deniers with education such as our Distinguished Lecture Series, Focus Seminars,
Human Rights Institute and workshops on the use of our curriculum and film, Testimony of the Human Spirit.
Your support for dinner this evening will allow us to continue these programs throughout the schools and our wider
community. Thank you all for Being the Difference when it matters the most. We cherish each and every one of you.
Truly,
Richard Laster

Spirit of Humanity Award
Lee Katz, Ph.D.
Vice Chair of the Holocaust and Human Rights
Education Center, Dr. Lee Katz has spent her life
pursuing her educational goals and helping others
achieve theirs. She graduated cum laude from the
University of Illinois with a B.A. in sociology and
continued on to receive her Masters in Education from
Syracuse University and her Ph.D. in Adult and
Continuing Education from the University of Michigan.
Throughout her career, Dr. Katz has worked closely
with grass roots populations and organizations to
develop programs designed to meet their educational
and related needs. Among her many professional
achievements, she helped develop a K-12 curriculum
for underachieving children in Syracuse, NY and she
was subsequently invited to serve as staff to the
Carnegie Foundation’s exploratory committee on
assessing the progress of education in the United
Spirit of Humanity Award
States. Later she was recruited to become head of sponsored research for Eastern Michigan
University and ultimately was invited to become Dean of Academic Development at the
University of Michigan-Dearborn.
In 1984 Dr. Katz became Vice President for External Affairs and Development at Purchase
College. In 1995 she accepted a position as the National Executive Vice President of the
American Associates of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel. During her tenure there
she worked with boards of directors throughout the U.S. to secure private support for the
university. Subsequently she served as National Executive of the Abraham Fund, devoted to
promoting co-existence among Arab and Jewish citizens of Israel.
Dr. Katz currently serves as an honorary board member of the 92nd Street Y, and an advisory
board member at the Rye Arts Center and the Medici Archive Project. She has been awarded
numerous honors and awards, including the 2008 Golden Harvest Humanitarian Award of
Westchester’s Public/Private Partnership. She was also an honoree at the Westchester Chapter,
National Association of Christians and Jews (1996).
Guest Speaker & Be The Difference Award
Tovah Feldshuh
Throughout her remarkable career as an actress,
singer, and playwright on stage, television and film, Tovah
Feldshuh illuminates the Jewish diaspora through her
portrayals of strong, complex women.
For her work on the New York stage, from Yentl to
Saravà! to Lend Me A Tenor to Golda’s Balcony, Ms.
Feldshuh has earned four Tony nominations for Best
Actress and won four Drama Desk Awards, four Outer
Critics Circle Awards, the Obie, the Theatre World Award
and the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Actress for Golda’s
Balcony, which became the longest-running one-woman
show in the history of Broadway. This year, the Drama
League nominated her for Distinguished Performance for
her searing portrayal of Irena Gut Opdyke on Broadway
in Irena’s Vow.
Film audiences recognize Ms. Feldshuh from such
movies as Kissing Jessica Stein; A Walk on the Moon;
Brewster’s Millions and Daniel. Most recently she
Guest Speaker & Be The Difference Award
appeared onscreen in O Jerusalem in which she played Golda Meir and Lady in the Water. On television, she received her first Emmy nomination for her portrayal of the Czech freedom fighter Helena
in Holocaust. She starred in The Amazing Howard Hughes, Citizen Cohn, The Cosby Mysteries and
The Cosby Show, and The Education of Max Bickford, to name a few. In 2004 she was nominated
for her second Emmy for her work on Law & Order as defense attorney Danielle Melnick.
Her one-woman musical show, Tovah: Out of Her Mind!, sold out in London’s West End and
culminated in a symphonic concert with Billy Crystal at Los Angeles’ Royce Hall. The Boston Globe
selected Tovah: Out of Her Mind! as the best one-person show of 2000. Ms. Feldshuh created a
new concert entitled Mining Golda: My Journey to Golda Meir which also played the West End at
the Savoy Theatre, as well as in major venues in Manchester, Leeds, Johannesburg, and Sydney.
Most recently she was the first artist ever to be asked to extend at the renowned Feinstein’s Nightclub at the Loews Regency Hotel in New York in her smash cabaret show, Tovah: In a Nutshell!
Ms. Feldshuh is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, won the McKnight fellowship to the
Tyrone Guthrie Theatre. She has taught at Yale, Cornell and New York Universities. This year, she
has been invited to join a think tank at Harvard University on Jewish life and leadership. She is a
supporter of Seeds of Peace, a non-profit, non-political organization that helps teenagers from
regions of conflict and is the recipient of the Eleanor Roosevelt Humanities Award and the Israel
Peace Medal, among others.
Ms. Feldshuh is married to New York attorney, Andrew Harris Levy. They have two children,
Garson Brandon and Amanda Claire. Visit www.tovahfeldshuh.com.
Courage to Care Award
Dr. Tina Strobos
Tina Strobos was 19 years old and just beginning
her medical school studies when the Nazis invaded her
native Holland in 1940. Everyday life for all citizens was
transformed with the Nazi regime, including the sudden
requirement for identity papers, food ration coupons,
and loyalty oaths at the university, which Tina refused
to sign on principle. Immediately, Tina felt compelled to
join the resistance movement.
Tina, her mother and grandmother began hiding
Jews in her grandmother’s home almost without
reflection; the family had previously sheltered refugees
during World War I, and sheltering those in peril under
the Nazis simply seemed the right thing to do. The first
to be hidden in a quickly constructed closet was a close
family friend who was also a noted writer and outspoken
trade unionist. Over the next five years Tina and her
family sheltered and offered assistance to more than 100
Jews. Tina and her mother Marie Schotte usually hid
four to five people at a time and then moved them to
Courage to Care Award
another in a network of safe houses. Some stayed a few days, others for months. Tina developed
an expertise in falsifying Dutch passports and identity cards and often took Jews to safe houses
at great risk to her personal safety.
The Gestapo raided Tina’s home on eight separate occasions, and Tina herself was arrested
and interrogated nine times, but the Nazis never gained any meaningful information from her.
Other members of the resistance sometimes tipped off Tina’s family just before a Gestapo raid,
giving Tina or her mother just enough time to alert those in hiding so that they could jump to
an adjacent rooftop.
When the war ended, Tina resumed her medical studies, and in the 1950s she and her husband
Robert immigrated to the United States, settling in Westchester County. While running her
psychiatric practice, Tina also raised three children, Jur, Semon, and Caroline. It was only in the
1980s when the activities of the Dutch Resistance became more popularly known, that Tina began
to talk about her participation. In 1989 Yad Vashem recognized Tina and her mother as Righteous
Among the Nations, the official designation of the State of Israel for those who saved Jews from
the Nazis. While she is proud that her name is also in the United States Holocaust Memorial
Museum, Tina emphasizes that many Dutch citizens who were never recognized also risked and
even lost their lives to save others. It is her fondest hope that all people can realize that rescue
can be learned and put into practice at any stage of life.
Tina is the proud grandmother of seven children.

Dear Friends,
It is with great pleasure that I congratulate the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center as they
celebrate their Annual Benefit, and their Spirit of Humanity award recipient, Dr. Lee Katz. It is vitally
important that we recognize exceptional organizations and individuals who offer their ideas and work for
the primary purpose of benefiting others. Additionally, HHREC’s goals to enhance the teaching and
learning of the lessons of the Holocaust are central to pave the way for an understanding society.
Dr. Lee Katz has spent her entire life pursuing her educational goals and helping others achieve theirs.
Dr. Katz’s impact upon others is international. She helped develop a K-12 curriculum for underachieving
children in Syracuse, NY, served as staff to the Carnegie Foundation’s exploratory committee on
assessing the progress of education in the United States, was head of sponsored research for Eastern
Michigan University, became Dean of Academic Development at the University of Michigan-Dearborn,
was Vice President for External Affairs and Development at Purchase College, National Executive Vice
President of the American Associates of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, served as National
Executive of the Abraham Fund where she devoted her energies to promote co-existence among Arab and
Jewish citizens of Israel, and currently serves as an honorary board member of the 92nd Street Y, and an
advisory board member at the Rye Arts Center and the Medici Archive Project. This level of involvement
and achievement is an exemplary model of working to benefit others which is worthy of recognition and
accolades.
I offer my congratulations and appreciation to the Dr. Lee Katz and the Holocaust and Human Rights
Education Center for their many contributions.
