II MEETING OF ASIAN AND SPANISH WOMEN Asian and Spanish Women Network Globalization and Local Realities th 7 November 2011 9.00 am BIOGRAPHIES: CARMEN MORENO: Carmen Moreno holds a Law Degree and a Postgraduate degree in Cultural Management. She is currently Director of Cooperation with Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe in the Spanish International Cooperation Agency. Professional career: In 1991 she joined the Diplomatic Service and was appointed Second Chief at the Embassy of Spain to Pakistan. She then was Secretary of the Embassy of Spain in India, in charge of cultural and consular affairs. Between 1996 and 1999 she was Second Chief at the Embassy of Spain in Malaysia and then returned to Spain as second-Head of the Technical Cabinet of the subSecretary of Foreign Affairs, moving to Head of this Office in 2000. In 2004 she was Consul at the Consulate General of Spain in Havana and in 2006, minister responsible for Cultural Affairs at the Embassy of Spain in Beijing. Since 2008 she is Director of Cooperation for Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe in the Spanish Agency for International Development. 25/10/2011 ANNA TERRÓN: Born in Barcelona on October 6, 1962. Holds a BA in Political Science and Administration. Since March 2010 she is Secretary of State for Immigration and Emigration. She was Secretary General of the Patronat Català Pro Europa (Pro Europe Catalan Council) since 2004 until its disappearance in 2006. From December 2006 to March 2010, she was Secretary for the European Union of the Generalitat de Catalunya, institution that succeeded the Patronat, while being a Delegate to the EU throughout this period. From 2005 to 2010 she was a member of the Committee of the Regions, where she was a Socialist spokesperson in the Commission on Citizenship, Governance, Institutional and External Affairs (CIVEX) and Vice President of the European Socialist Group. She was a member of the European Parliament from 1994 to 2004 and was spokesperson for the European Socialist Party Group in the Committee for Freedom and Rights of citizens, Justice and Home Affairs as well as member of the Foreign Affairs commission. II MEETING OF ASIAN AND SPANISH WOMEN Asian and Spanish Women Network Globalization and Local Realities psychology, racism in Australia, multicultural attitudes in plural societies, migration policy, cross-cultural psychology, social and community issues, and youth issues. She has undertaken research on migration and return migration in Hawaii and the Philippines, labour migration in Spain and Italy, the character of Australian ethnic press, international students’ experiences, street-frequenting ethnic youth, refugee family settlement, Hong Kong immigrants in Australia, legal needs of NESBs, and an evaluation of a Juvenile Crime Prevention Strategy. She has also worked collaboratively with international researchers comparing ethnocultural youth identity and acculturation in 13 countries, and culture and trait links in four countries. Her most recently completed project was about the needs of Australian Muslim families, research funded by the Australian Government Department of Immigration and Citizenship. She is currently conducting research on social cohesion, social division and conflict in multicultural Australia, funded by the same government department. Rogelia has a long history of specialisation in indigenous psychology which started at the University of the Philippines where she taught for 15 years before migrating to Australia. She has published widely in this area, including the first edited volume on Philippine indigenous psychology, book chapters and journal articles on indigenous methods. She has applied her passion for and expertise in indigenous and crosscultural methods to the research she has conducted and to her teaching of research methods. An example of her leadership in this area is her recent involvement with the founding of the Asian Association of Indigenous and Cultural Psychology in which she was elected as Director of Research and Publication. MONTSE GATELL PÉREZ: Born in Sabadell in 1971. She holds a degree in Semitic Philology, specializing in Arabic, from the University of Barcelona (1994). Also a postgraduate degree in Management of Public Administrations, by Hall of Higher Elected Studies, Catalan Association of Municipalities and Regions of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (2006). Currently, she is studying the second level in Catalan Studies at the UOC. She was the mayor of Castellar del Vallès (2004-2007), and deputy mayor in the Municipal Council, where she coordinated the Social Area and the departments of Culture, Communication and Education in 2003-2004 and Youth Affairs and Communication in1999-2003. She was vice president of the Catalan Cooperation Fund (2004-2007), member of the Joint Commission of Education since 2007 and adviser on equality and gender issues in the Catalan Association of Municipalities since 2007. She worked in the creative art department of the Educa Sallent SA company, supervising translations, editing and creation of texts (1996-1998) and was professor of Catalan language and literature (ESO) in school Casal de Castellar del Vallès (1995 -1996 and 1998-1999). ZAINAH ANWAR: Zainah Anwar is a founding member and former Executive Director of Sisters in Islam, a Malaysian non-governmental organisation working on women’s rights within the Islamic framework. The group works in the areas of research, advocacy, public education and legal reform and services to push for a progressive rights-based understanding of Islam.[It deals with a wide range of issues, including Islamic Family Law, Islamic Criminal Law, domestic violence, freedom of religion, freedom of expression, Islam as a source of law and public policy, and Islam and women’s rights. ] ROSA MARÍA CALAF: The most veteran correspondent in TVE (Spanish Television), she has a 26-year career abroad. She opened the Moscow agency for the Soviet Union and the Hong Kong one for the Asia Pacific Region. She has been a correspondent in New York for the United States and Canada, in Buenos Aires for South America, in Rome for Italy and the Vatican, in Vienna for Eastern Europe and in China during the Olympic year. She has reported from 93 countries to TVE on politics and economics, conflicts and disasters, culture and society and has explained the events and met the characters that have shaped the history of the last four decades. Zainah is currently the Director for Musawah, a global movement for equality and justice in the Muslim family. She also writes a monthly column on politics, religion and women’s rights, called Sharing the Nation, in the Sunday Star, Malaysia. She is also a former member of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia. R.M. Calaf has visited a total of 170 countries, in professional, personal and adventure trips. She has traveled 50,000 km and visited 21 African countries by car over 13 months. RATNA OSMAN: Organisation: Sisters in Islam Country: Malaysia Ratna Osman is the Executive Director of Sisters in Islam, a Muslim women’s NGO committed to promoting an understanding of Islam that recognises the principles of Justice, Equality, Freedom and Dignity within a democratic nation state. Her work at Sisters in Islamincludes creating public awareness and advocating for reform in laws and policies by promoting and developing a framework of women’s rights in Islam, taking into consideration women’s experiences and realities. She joined Sisters in Islam in 2009 as the Programme Manager for the Advocacy, Legal Services and Reform Unit, and was involved in the advocacy campaign together with Joint Action Group for Gender Equality (JAG) in pushing for the amendments of the Islamic Family Law Bill. Within Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya she has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Barcelona Federation, member of the Barcelona Council and of the National Council and has also been part of the Bureau of Immigration and the Cooperation committee. From 1999 to 2003 she was a member of the Executive Committee of Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya’s Youth section. SÒNIA PARELLA: Ph.D. in Sociology from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and professor in the Department of Sociology at the same University. LOURDES BENERÍA: Lourdes Benería is Professor Emeritus of Cornell University, USA, and former Director of the Latin American Studies Program and the Gender and Global Change program at the same University. Since 2008 she is associate professor at iiEDG (Inter-University Institute for the Study of Women and Gender) in Barcelona. She has also worked at the ILO (International Labour Organization) and has collaborated with other international institutions such as UNIFEM, UNDP, DESA, and UNRISD, among others. Her immediate past responsibilities include: Minister for Women & Social Development, Adviser Population Planning and Chairperson UNESCO Executive Board. She has contributed for over two decades to a range of important international and national forums of multilateral institutions and civil society organizations/think tanks on women/child development, poverty, peace and security. Her teaching and research work focuses on issues of labor markets, gender and development, globalization, the crisis of care and the feminization of international migration. BRAEMA MATHI: Director of Research and Advocacy, AWARE ( Singapore) and President, MARUAH (Working Group For An ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism, Singapore) Miss Braema Mathi is an advocate for social justice. This has led her to become very involved in issues related to women, migrants and HIV. She has led AWARE, founded and led Transient Workers Count Too( migrants’ rights) and is today the President of the regional group, MARUAH (human rights). She is also the Singapore focal Point for the Women's Caucus ( regional network of women’s groups) in ASEAN and for the Regional Working Group on Human Rights in ASEAN. She is the also the Chair of CEDAW Committee with the women’s group and has led and coordinated the Alternative reports on CEDAW and the Universal Periodic Review. JOAQUÍN LUNA: Born in Barcelona on December 31, 1958. Holds a BA in Journalism from the University of Navarra (1981). BANDANA RANA: Bandana Rana is one of the leading players of the women's movement in Nepal with more than two decade of active engagement in promoting women's rights and gender equality. She is currently the executive chair of Saathi an NGO working on violence against women and children in Nepal since 1992. Ms. Rana is the regional coordinator of the South Asian Campaign for Gender Equality (SACGE) and has led the campaign in the region since 2006. She is a member of the Asia Pacific Advisory Group for Women Peace and Security for UN ESCAP. Ms Rana has a background on gender, media and development and has led several advocacy programs for women’s rights with focus on media interventions and enhancing participatory communication at all levels – community, national and regional. She has led many studies and research programs related to Gender Based Violence during the conflict and post conflict situation of Nepal. She is a Member of the Bioethics Committee of Catalonia and of the Social Council of the University Pompeu Fabra. She has the National Culture Prize awarded by the Generalitat de Catalunya in the section of Journalism. Milagros Perez-Oliva has been associate dean and president of the Barcelona section of the Journalists Professional Association of Catalonia . She is a member of the Commission for the Study of Preventive Measures of Recidivism of Serious Crimes, created by the Department of Justice of the Generalitat (2007) and member of the Jury of the Award of the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (2008), among other responsibilities. Ms Rana is the former Chairperson of the National Women’s Commission of Nepal. She has worked as news editor/anchor for Nepal Television and also served in the board of directors of Radio Nepal and Press Council Nepal. She was the founder and first elected president of Sancharika Samuha (Forum of Women in Media) and has worked as gender and communications consultant at different times with UNDP, UNIFEM (now part of UN Women) UNCEF and FAO. TASHI ZANGMO: Dr. Tashi Zangmo is the Executive Director and the Founder of the Bhutan Nuns Foundation (BNF), in Thimphu Bhutan. Tashi has a Bachelor’s Degree in Buddhist Higher Studies from the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies in Varanasi, India. In 1999 Tashi earned her second Bachelor’s degree as a student at Mount Holyoke College, in Development Studies in the United States. She then earned a Master’s and PhD degree in Education from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. MILAGROS PÉREZ OLIVA: Milagros Pérez- Oliva holds a degree in Journalism by the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1980) and has done Law Studies at the University of Barcelona (19801984). She is the Readers’ Advocate for the newspaper El País since February 2009, where she has previously held several responsibilities as editor in chief. She collaborates in various TV programs as an analyst such as "Hour 25" SER Chain, "The Matí" of Catalunya Radio, "Els Matins" TV3 and "59 Seconds " of TVE in Catalonia. Tashi’s childhood experience inspired her to champion the cause of underprivileged women and girls through educating Buddhist nuns in Bhutan. Since October 2010 she has the post of Secretary General for Social Policy and Consumer Affairs in the Ministry of Health, Social Policy and Equality. From an early age she began her career in the media as an editor, occupying the post of Head of Press at the City Council of Andújar, Jaén, from 1993 to 1998.
