Introduction
MD Group has several divisions some
dating back as far as 1992.
MD Powertrain (MDPT)
MDPT has a large portfolio of base engines for industrial
and marine applications and will assist clients with technical support and application engineering.
Marinediesel Sweden AB
In 1997 Marinediesel developed the first true direct replacement diesel for gasoline/petrol V8 marine I/O or inboard engines as well as one of the most durable and yet
lightweight commercial engines on the market. In 2009
the 6.6L common rail VGT engines where introduced as
the most powerful commercial marine propulsion engines
in its range.
Marinediesel Engineering
MDE does all the research, development and engineering for
the group and has extensive R&D capabilities including rapid
prototyping, CAD, software based analysis, flow testing and
multiple engine test cells at its disposal.
Scandinavian Sterndrive Systems AB
Manufactures commercially rated sterndrives for diesel engines up to 500hp based on a patented belt drive solution that
makes them vastly more durable than any competitor on the
market today.
Outboard Motor Platforms AB
Is developing diesel outboard systems to meet future market
requirements.
MDS Engineering UK
The groups UK based engineering arm for field training, installations and commissioning.

Industrial Base Engines
MDPT can supply a range of engine platforms from GM
Powertrain as well as General Engine Products to complete
a line of gasoline as well as mechanical and electronic
diesel engine ranging from 1.6L up to 6.6L. MDPT
does not only supply the base engines but also full R&D
and technical support to complete the packages and to
assist with integration into customer platforms. Hence
we can supply turn-key solutions for any marine or non
marine application. This is supported by a range of ECU’s
for gasoline and diesel engines as well as a vast in-house
R&D capability. MDPT has a large engineering staff to
assist clients with anything from accessories to validations
and emissions certifications. We also have a team that can
support with field training, installations and commissioning
world wide. MDPT will also support with full parts- and
workshop manuals. MDPT does not only supply a base
product but also the full technical support and integration
assistance.
so GM Powertrain has built all of its industrial engines to
have the capability of being fueled with propane or natural
gas. Propane and natural gas have higher octane ratings
than gasoline, but they also have lower lubricity, so engines
must be designed specifically to handle these fuels.
GM Powertrain incorporates special features into its
industrial engines to ensure long, efficient engine life, no
matter what the choice of fuel.
Our engines pass the test in situations where reliability is
often a matter of life or death. GM engines in industrial
applications run emergency generators and backup systems
for FAA air traffic control, critical care nursing facilities and
wireless telecommunications towers. When the power goes
out, we stay on.
All GM Powertrain engine plants are compliant with the
ISO/TS-16949 Standards.
The industrial engine market is far ahead of the truck and
passenger car markets in the use of propane and natural gas,

The Vortec 1.6L is a global engine used in a multitude of applications. It has
a reputation around the world for delivering the uncompromised power and
rugged durability you’ve come to expect from GM Vortec engines.
Features and Benefits

The Vortec 1.6L I-4 engine from GM’s Toluca, Mexico, plant
is the smallest displacement engine that GM Powertrain
provides for OEM applications.

The crank-triggered, waste spark ignition system uses a crankshaft position sensor, coil
pack, and available ECM to replace the distributor and coil used in conventional
ignition systems, so servicing of distributor caps and rotors is eliminated. Crankshaft
position is precisely determined directly from the crankshaft, resulting in improved
spark accuracy. The OEM-established spark timing cannot be changed by the end user.
The exhaust valve seat inserts in the cylinder
head provide superb durability.

A new, 4-cylinder engine that gives industrial OEMs another
choice in selecting an engine that exactly meets their
requirements.
The Vortec 2.4L is a global engine used in a multitude of applications. It has a
reputation around the world for delivering the uncompromised
power and rugged durability you’ve come to expect from GM Vortec engines.

• Designed to use gasoline, propane, and natural gas
• Thermostat with internal bleed for improved
cooling system performance
• Aluminum heads with premium valve seat
inserts and hard-faced exhaust valves for extended life on gaseous fuels
• Intake manifold pressure/temperature sensor (TMAP) (intake or remote mount) included on
the Z5 engine varian
• 58X crank-triggered, waste spark ignition system utilizes the coil pack and crankshaft position sensor
• Z5 engine variant is equipped with a PFI-style
plastic intake manifold which can be used for

The Vortec 2.4L industrial engine is a larger, more powerful
version of the proven Vortec 1.6L industrial engine. Shown as
Z5 engine variant with optional fuel rail, throttle body and
plastic intake manifold.

The crank-triggered, waste spark ignition system uses a crankshaft position sensor, coil
pack, and available ECM to replace the distributor and coil used in conventional ignition
systems, so servicing of distributor caps and rotors is eliminated. Crankshaft position is
precisely determined directly from the crankshaft, resulting in improved spark
accuracy. The OEM-established spark timing cannot be changed by the end user.

industrial applications. Whether on the water or on the job,
the Vortec 3.0L delivers the durable power you need.
Features and Benefits
MPFI Version (LMX)
• Multi-port electronic fuel injection (MPFI) version for gasoline
or dual fuel applications
• Cylinder head targets fuel injectors to back of intake valves for
quick response to changing conditions
The 8-port cylinder head configuration of the Vortec 3.0L
engine has an MPFI version and a gaseous-fuel-only version.
• Stainless steel MPFI fuel rail resists corrosion
Gaseous Version (LW6)
• Customized for gaseous fuels only, taking advantage of the higher octane levels by using a higher compression ratio
All Versions
• Utilizes 58X crankshaft position sensing and includes a
HVS (High Voltage Switch) and coil
• Sintered powder metal exhaust valve seat inserts for enhanced durability
• Nodular iron crankshaft for increased strength and durability

Available options

• Available in low and high compression ratio.
The 8-port version of the cylinder head is used for the MPFI gasoline
version and the gaseous-fuel-only version of the Vortec 3.0L. The
gaseous-fuel-only version has a camshaft profiled to take advantage of
the higher octane in propane and natural gas.
The Vortec 3.0L engine, with the longest history
of any industrial engine offered by GM Powertrain, has a well-earned reputation for durability
and reliability.

The Vortec 4.3L industrial engine
offers smooth performance and
excellent durability.
The Integral Air Fuel Module (IAFM) incorporates several
components into one assembly. The bottom of the inlet manifold
is made of iron and the top is made of aluminum. Integrated
into the module is an electronic throttle body. Also included is a
combination manifold absolute pressure (MAP) and manifold air
temperature (MAT) sensor.

The Vortec 1.6L engine has a badge area on top where OEMs can place their
own identifying badge.
The crank-triggered, waste spark ignition system uses a
crankshaft position sensor, coil pack, and available ECM to
replace the distributor and coil used in conventional
ignition systems, so servicing of distributor caps and rotors
is eliminated. Crankshaft position is precisely determined
directly from the crankshaft, resulting in improved spark
accuracy. The OEM-established spark timing cannot be
changed by the end user.

The Vortec 4.3L marine engine uses advanced
technology to maximize the simple pleasure of
boating.
The Integral Air Fuel Module (IAFM) incorporates several features
into one integral assembly. The bottom of the inlet manifold is
made of iron and the top is made of aluminum. Integrated into
the module are a stainless steel fuel rail, stainless steel tip fuel
injectors, and a throttle body that includes a Throttle Position
Sensor (TPS) and an Idle Air Control (IAC) motor.

Vortec 6.0L V-8 VVT (LY6)

Oil flows through #2 cam bearing, into center of camshaft,
through check valve and filter in valve, through oil control spool
valve which directs oil into the correct phaser cavity: eithe
advance, retard, or both (hold position).
Variable Valve Timing
The Vortec 6.0L’s dual-equal cam phaser adjusts camshaft timing
at the same rate for both intake and exhaust valves. A vane-type
phaser is installed on the cam sprocket to turn the camshaft
relative to the sprocket, thereby adjusting the timing of both
intake and exhaust valve operation. The vane phaser is actuated
by hydraulic pressure from engine oil, and managed by a solenoid
that controls oil pressure on the phaser. The phaser uses a wheel
or rotor with four vanes (like a propeller) to turn the camshaft
relative to the cam sprocket, which turns at a fixed rate via chain
from the crankshaft. The solenoid directs oil to pressure points
on either side of the four phaser vanes; the vanes, and camshaft,
turn in the direction of the oil flow. The more pressure, the more
the phaser and camshaft turn. The Vortec 6.0L’s new engine
control module directs the phaser to advance or retard cam
timing, depending on driving demands. The dual-equal phaser
can turn the camshaft over a range of 26 degrees relative to the
cam sprocket (or 7 degrees advance, 45 degrees retard relative to
the crank).

Induction System Improvements
(Intake manifold flow path)
High-Flow Cylinder Heads and Enhanced
Valvetrain
The LS3 engineering team focused on design elements to increase
flow efficiency in addition to the displacement increase, to meet
the performance enhancement. The bore was increased to a larger
103.25 mm diameter compared to the LS2 bore of
101.6. Engine stroke remains at 92.0 mm. Intake flow efficiency
was optimized by straightening out and optimizing the flow path
from the intake manifold into the cylinder heads. A high-flow
efficiency induction system is borrowed from the Z06
application. The cylinder head exhaust ports have been modified
to increase flow.
The intake port size and shape have been modified to increase
flow. Casting changes were made to increase the opening at
the exhaust face to improve exhaust port flow. A new exhaust
manifold opening is required to match the heads. The inlet
rocker arm is offset 6 mm between the valve tip and rocker bolt/
push rod to enable a more direct intake port. The intake valve
diameter is increased from 50.8 to 55.0 mm. Hollow stem intake
valves were implemented to enable the higher engine rpm
capability (13% reduction in mass from LS2). The exhaust valves
are 40.4 mm in diameter. Carryover LS2 high load valve springs
are also included for higher rpm capability. Intake lift increases
from 13.25 mm to 14.0 mm. Exhaust lobes are carryover LS2.
Camshaft timing is revised.

engineering and integration department to assist clients with
integration of powerplants into any application. MDPT
engines power a variety of off-highway equipment in many
agricultural, industrial and other specialty configurations.

R&D development capabilities as well as emissions labs,

The current diesel portfolio consist of engines ranging
from 1,3L to 6.6L displacement but other engines can be
made available if required. All current industrial engine
offerings are four-stroke cycle diesel engines and a swept
displacement below 7L. There are both mechanical and
common-rail models available.

Modern common-rail diesel engine in combination with a variety of turbo
setups and MDPT’s own industrial ECU system makes this a versatile diesel

6.5L mechanical V8 diesel
Based on the proven GEP 6.5L engine, also available in heavy
duty configuration. The base engine has been built in numbers
exceeding 2 million and is very proven. GEP updates include
forged crankshaft, improved coolant flow and improved lubrication system, the heavy duty engine has a one-piece cast iron
crankshaft girdle among other heavy duty features. The naturally
aspirated version of this engine is an extremely durable option
for heavy duty industrial applications.
