The way it works is simple: We initially stock the LFL with a variety of good quality books that we hope will interest our neighbors. You stop by and take whatever catches your fancy. You return and bring books to contribute when you can. LFL books are always a gift and never for sale! Don’t forget to leave a review for your neighbors in the journal inside! Because of communities like ours, the Little Free Library movement has rapidly grown. Many Libraries have been installed and thousands of books shared around the country as well as around the world. LITTLE FREE LIBRARY’S MISSION IS TO: Promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide. To build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations. VOLUME 40, ISSUE 3 PAGE Help Protect Klahanie’s Natural Areas Klahanie is fortunate to have an abundance of natural features including a lake, ponds, small streams, forests, and meadows. We are so lucky to have these features, as most other developments do not. Other than removing nonnative invasive plants, our natural areas do not require a lot of care, but they do need protection from damaging activities. As designated in the Klahanie plat maps for Native Growth Protection Areas “no tree or significant ground cover shall be cut, removed or destroyed”. Some damaging activities that hurt our natural areas include: dumping yard waste or trash cutting new paths through the vegetation creating dirt bike trails, ramps and holes destroying or cutting down trees and plants spraying of trees and other vegetation with paint or pellets building play or other structures, and littering. In addition, restoration can cost thousands of dollars. A number of dam aged locations have required extensive hillside stabilization as well as the planting of hundreds of native plants. It is vital that our natural areas stay healthy. As the native trees and plants flourish they improve water quality, air quality and wildlife habitat, outcompete invasive non-native plants and provide aesthetic value. We need everyone’s help in protecting our natural areas as they belong to the entire community. Please keep a watchful eye and report any misuse to the KHOA office. 5 PAGE All Things Aquatics 6 Youth Swim Lessons Water Workout Classes Summer Pool Hours Swim lessons are going strong at Lakeside and Mountainview Pools! Over the last few weeks I’ve received several emails from residents concerned about the presence of bears in Klahanie. Believe me, I understand how alarming it can be to find yourself suddenly confronted with wildlife of unusual size, especially when it’s in your own backyard. Your HOA staff continues to diligently report each sighting to both King County Animal Control and to Washington’s Department of Fish and Wildlife. In each instance, however, we have been told that such issues do not fall within their purviews. More specifically, unless these bears become physically aggressive toward man, the presence of bears is no more problematic than the presence of raccoons. ber that bears learn very quickly and search their normal positions, and bage cans.
