TRACK RECORD SUMMER 2009 3 17-18 JULY ALMS FOR THE FAST The Next Big Event Coming Up At Lime Rock Park Is The “ALMS Northeast Grand Prix.” SOME OF YOU MIGHT WONDER, WHAT IS ALMS? THE SHORT ANSWER IS, THE BEST PROTOTYPE AND SPORTS CAR RACING AROUND. And that’s why the series is coming to Lime Rock. But before we get to the longer, more descriptive answer, here’s a bit of background. 4 “ALMS” stands for American Le Mans Series. Le Mans, of course, is shorthand for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, easily the most famous sports car race in the world. It is the world’s oldest sports car race in endurance racing, held annually since 1923 near the town of Le Mans, Sarthe, France. The series was created by Georgia-based businessman Don Panoz, the inventor of the nicotine patch. Panoz wanted a U.S.centric endurance prototype series, one that encompassed the spirit of Le Mans. So in 1998 Panoz created a partnership with the organization in charge of Le Mans, the Automobile Club de L’Ouest (ACO). The ALMS rules and regulations were designed to follow closely those of the ACO for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The big step to the initial success of ALMS was Panoz organizing a race at Road Atlanta dubbed Petit Le Mans, a 10-hour event. The inaugural Petit Le Mans took place in 1998 as a part of the Professional SportsCar Racing series, in which Panoz was an investor. For 1999, the series changed its name to the American Le Mans Series. The series is sanctioned by the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA), the same organization that ran the well-loved Camel GT Series from the 1970s through the early 1990s, with a yearly stop at Lime Rock. F O R T I C K E T S C A L L 8 0 0 R A C E L R P O R G O T O W W W. L I M E R O C K . C O M As with the 24 Hours, the ALMS cars are divided into four classes. Purpose-built race cars with closed fenders compete in the Prototype classes (LMP1 and LMP2) and modified production sports cars compete in the Grand Touring classes (GT1 and GT2). Each car is driven by multiple drivers, usually two or three, and all four classes are on the track racing at the same time. An example of an LMP1 car is the Acura ARX 02a. The chassis is an open-top carbon fiber/aluminum monocoque weighing 1,984 lbs., and is powered by an Acura LM-AR7 engine: 4.0 liter normally aspirated V8 making more than 620 h.p. In LMP2, the Lola Mazda B09/86 is typical: a closedtop carbon fiber monocoque that weighs in at 1,815 pounds and is powered by the Mazda MZR-R 2.0 liter, turbocharged four-cylinder putting out around 500 h.p. Le Mans Series this year to recognize at each race a “Green Challenge Award Winner.” Two teams – one prototype and one GT – that demonstrate the best overall performance and fuel efficiency with the least environmental impact win the Michelin Green X Challenge award. When you come to the ALMS Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park 17-18 July, be sure to head into the paddock to get up-close looks at the terrifically fast, wonderfully sophisticated ALMS prototypes and GTs. Then make yourself comfortable on the hillsides and enjoy some really spectacular racing! In the modified production GT categories, GT1 cars are production-based two-wheel drive race cars, very similar to their showroom counterparts. These modified racing GTs produce between 600-650 horsepower and have a minimum weight of 2,480 pounds. [Note: The GT1 class will not be at Lime Rock. There will be a newly added IMSA Challenge Class.] In GT2, a good example is the BMW E92 M3. The engine is called the BMW P65, a lightly modified version of the street engine: a 4.0-liter DOHC V8 that makes around 485 h.p. on the track (compared to 414 h.p. in the standard-production version). The ALMS BMW M3 weighs 2,745 lbs. Oh, there’s one more really cool – or should we say “green” – aspect about ALMS, unique in motorsports: Tire maker Michelin entered into an environmentallyconscious partnership with the American TRACK RECORD SUMMER 2009 5 Stayed at WITNESS THE RETURN OF THE BMW OF NORTH AMERICA M3 RACE CARS TO ALMS COMPETITION. First, let’s just look at this list of drivers who at one time in their careers or another, commanded Formula Atlantic: James Hunt, Michael Andretti, Keke Rosberg, Alan Jones, Al Unser, Jr., Gilles, Jacques and Jacques Villeneuve, Buddy Rice, Sam Hornish, Jr., A.J. Allmendinger, Danica Patrick... – the list is practically endless. NASCAR Camping World Series, 14-15 August 2009 What in the heck are big ol’ NASCAR stockers doing on Lime Rock’s road course? Putting on one of the year’s best shows in racing, that’s what. The 14-15 August Mohegan Sun 200 at Lime Rock Park will be a giant field of NASCAR Camping World Series East drivers bangin’ wheels and tradin’ paint and bump draftin’ while trying to brake and downshift and for heaven’s sake right turn. And, that makes for one of the best, most exciting Lime Rock race weekends of the year, tell you what! Got that right... The Camping World Series East (which combined the former Busch East Series and Busch North Series in late 2007; there is also a Camping World Series West) is primarily a developmental series for drivers climbing the NASCAR ladder. All the races, with the exception of Lime Rock and 12 Watkins Glen, are on oval tracks. Drivers such as Joey Logano (who just won his first Cup race), Martin Truex, Jr., Ricky Craven and Mike McLaughlin all came out of this championship. Many of the cars in NASCAR Camping World Series East are ex-Sprint Cup machines, but they weigh a bit less (3,300 lbs. vs. 3,450) and make around 650 h.p. rather than the 850 of an unrestricted Sprint Cup Car of Tomorrow. The cars are, in road-racing terms, under-tired and under-braked. What that does is make for really good competition at Lime Rock, because the drivers need to take really good care of the equipment. Since there are a few, ahem, drivers in this series who are not, shall we say, um, very well versed in all the intricacies of road racing, there is some very interesting Naturally, the histories of Atlantics and Lime Rock Park have intertwined over the past 36 years. Ten times the Atlantic Championship has come to Lime Rock’s famous 1.53 miles, the first race being 4 July 1978. Michael Greenfield racing going on at Lime Rock in the Mohegan Sun 200. A few teams even bring in Skip Barber instructors to replace their every-day drivers, while other teams put a car together just for this show, then strap a Lime Rock veteran into the seat. Last year’s Camping World race at Lime Rock was won by Matt Kobyluck, whose primary sponsor is Mohegan Sun. Kobyluck proved he knows his way around road courses and ovals, as he ended up winning the 2008 NASCAR Camping World East title. The bottom line is that you don’t want to miss the NASCAR stockers at Lime Rock. It’s loud, fast and really entertaining, tell you what. Got that right. F O R T I C K E T S C A L L 8 0 0 R A C E L R P O R G O T O W W W. L I M E R O C K . C O M The 1978 Atlantic series was seven races, four in Canada and three in the U.S. Lime Rock was round four, with Howdy Holmes having won the opener and Keke Rosberg the next two. In qualifying, Holmes stuck it on pole, his first of the year. But it was Bobby Rahal – you might have heard of him, too – who won, driving a Ralt RT-1. It was the Ralt’s only win of the year, as Holmes in his March 78B edged out Rosberg (Chevron B45) for the title. Rahal wound up fifth overall. A to V It was two years later that the Atlantics again graced Lime Rock’s paddock, for round five of 10. Jacques Villeneuve, the brother of multiple Atlantic champion and soon to be F1 star Gilles (who would sire Champ Car and F1 titlist Jacques, named after his uncle), took the win in his March 80A, beating polesitter Jeff Wood. Villeneuve took the championship, nipping second-place Tom Gloy by just 10 points. Steve Saleen, Price Cobb and Wood rounded out the top five. By 1985, organizers had split the series into two “Atlantic Racing conferences,” East Coast and West Coast, and Lime Rock was the third of six “ECAR” races. Rookie Mike Greenfield took the pole and win – a 12-second margin of victory over Mike Angus -- at Lime Rock in his Ralt RT-4/85, but it was Angus who wound up the season champion, also in a Ralt. For the next five years, the Eastern Division of Atlantic was a staple at Lime Rock Park. Calvin Fish (Ralt), today a SPEED TV broadcaster, beat Paul Dallenbach (Ralt) by almost a lap to win the 1986 race. Fish finished second in the championship to another driver who would also come to make his name in TV... Scott Goodyear. Greenfield came back strong in 1987, taking the Lime Rock pole and win in a Ralt, leading every lap and never seriously challenged -- but it was Fish who hooked the championship. The 1988 ECAR title bout was between eventual champion Steve Shelton, Jocko Cunningham and Scott Harrington, with the Lime Rock race going to the Swift DB-4 of Freddy Rhemrev (now an instructor with the successful Braman Motorcar group) after Shelton’s Swift suffered a broken stub axle with seven laps to go. Claude Bourbonnais was always a frontrunner in Atlantic – he won 13 races in a five-year span – but his very first win was as an Atlantic rookie at Lime Rock in 1989, piloting a Swift. He had qualified more than 1.3 seconds faster than outside polesitter Colin Trueman. Switching to a Reynard 90H in 1990, Bourbonnais again had the measure of the field at Lime Rock. TRACK RECORD SUMMER 2009 It was in 1991 that the Atlantic series went back to a single “conference.” It was a huge year, with 69 different drivers scoring points, among them Jimmy Vasser and Gilles’ brother Jacques Villenueve. Another rising star was Jovy Marcelo, a Filipino in his second year of Atlantics. Although Vasser took the pole at Lime Rock, it was Marcelo in a Swift that took the win after Vasser’s fuel pump went south. Vasser won six times that year and Marcelo just once more, but Marcelo was a much more consistent finisher that year and edged Vasser for the title, 157 points to 153. Tragically, the next year Marcelo died in a crash during practice for the Indy 500. The Atlantic organizers then created the Jovy Marcelo Sportsmanship Award, which is given annually to the driver who best exemplifies the sportsmanship of Marcelo. Former Malcolm in the Middle star Frankie Muniz won the 2008 Jovy Marcelo Sportsmanship Award. Until this year, the last time the Atlantics were at Lime Rock Park was 1992. The winner (and eventual season champion) was Chris Smith, son of the late Carroll Smith, the famous race engineer and author of the must-have series of four books that began with “Tune to Win.” The Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda PAST WINNERS AT LIME ROCK PARK 1978, Bobby Rahal 1980, Jacques Villeneuve (bro. of Gilles) 1985, Mike Greenfield 1986, Calvin Fish 1987, Mike Greenfield 1988, Freddy Rhemrev 1989, Claude Bourbonnais 1990, Claude Bourbonnais 1991, Jovy Marcelo (dec.) 1992, Chris Smith 13 We supply the karts, We put on the event, YOU have the FUN!
